Copy The Entire Contents Of Boot Drive?
Nov 20, 2011
I have been having issues with the booting of my c drive. I just installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 64 onto a fresh hard drive and it is booting. What I want to do is copy over the entire contents of my original C drive over to the new drive. I have a second computer to do this on and am not sure how to do it. I doubt that dragging and dropping will copy all the hidden and system files, which is what I want to do.
The reason I don't want to simply make an image of the first drive and restore that is that the original drive does not boot AND contains a system partition that I don't want to bring along. I am hoping to marry the bootability of the new drive with the files and information on the original drive.

I'm trying to take a screenshot of my music folder but it is too big to just alt+print screen. Is there a way to take a screenshot of the entire folders contents built into windows or a 3rd party program that can do it.

I've got problems with my work laptop and impending hardware failure. Nothing too serious, just a dodgy fan - but the machine has to get sent away for repair (company policy, not a fat lot I can do about it).What would be great is if I can take a complete image of this machine and then run it in a VM on my desktop machine. Importantly the machine name needs to present itself as the same for me to be able to connect it to the domain over vpn.Both machines are win7x64, enterprise on the laptop and professional on the desktop. The laptop is an intel quad core with 8gb, the desktop a quad core amd with 16gb.Can anyone tell me if this is doable, or by any chances point me to an idiots guide on how to achieve it? This has come a really inopportune time, if ever there were a good time for a hw failure

I have a drive that was using PGP that has become damaged and will not boot despite trying 3 days of different fixes and repairs. I have a complete drive backup that will restore but when I try and boot after my PGP password I get 'Missing operating system'. Again I have tried decrypting and fixing but to no end.
I have another disk with a working and booting install of Windows 7 (same architecture etc) on. I have the entire contents of the non-booting system disk that I can access from the image of it.
If I booted into something like Windows Recovery or Live Linux environment, can I copy the entire contents of the non-working Windows 7 drive over the working one and expect it to work and then boot?

Quite spontaneously and for no apparent reason, I can no longer copy/paste a simple "add contents of 2 cells" to empty cells (e.g. e3+d4, to the next cells down the column, etc.). No matter what I do it will only copy the actual contents i.e. the result of the previous calculation. What I have tried:-
1. Deleting all contents and formats from the range of cells and starting over;
2. Using the drop-down menu of the paste button to select the "paste-special / formula" option (which keeps jumping back to the first default option at the top of the list);
3. Running the Office diagnostics built-in software off the microsoft top-left button to detect faults and anomalies - Nothing works and I am at a loss.......most peculiar...........

I made the mistake of putting W7 on a small partition of the 160GB D drive. I was not aware that much of windows 7 programing would not allow me to change the destination to install and insists on installing on the OS drive. I am looking for a way to copy, move or coerce all of the current system onto another drive without erasing that drive.

I had an issue where Windows 7 would not boot anymore, getting error, BOOTMGR missing, Press Alt-Ctrl-Del to restart. I have tried to repair with windows disk but still getting error. I have decided that I want to just do a reinstall but I want to get on and export my favorites and grab a couple other things. I used to have a CD that I could use to boot up with (Think it was called Barts Boot Disk, Been too long) to get into Windows XP and do a couple things. My question is, is what is the best boot disk that will allow me to copy files from the HD to my external drive before I refresh?

I'm helping out my wife's friend who has a Dell Dimension 4700 with Windows Xp. So her motherboard fried and wanted me to transfer her files over to a new backup hard drive. So I took the hard drive out and hooked it up to my computer running Windows 7. I can see the files and everything just fine but when I click on a folder I get the "You don't currently have permission to access this folder" Click continue to permanently get access to this folder. So I click continue and it wants me to go to a security tab and change the owership from Unable to display current owner to Admin. The problem I'm running into is that it wants me to do that for every folder and file. Is their a way that I can do a blanket ownership over the whole drive, or is their a way to transfer the files without having to take ownership of the drive so my friend can just copy and paste the files with no problems.

Skipped Vista, so I'm just learning to hate permissions in Windows 7. How do I enable the two other XP machines in the workgroup to access an entire drive on the Windows 7 machine? I've been able to set up access to individual folders (not even sure how I did that), but not to an entire drive - in this case data drive D.

I had it plugged into my laptop when I was blowing it off and putting a copy of XP Pro on it. When it said to delete the partition, I clicked on the USB drive on accident. Now plugging it into Win 7 computer, it wants to format it. Is there any way to get my files? I have one word document in particular that has been my life's work. I had not backed it up in over 2 months.

Best technology to back up (to take an image) for the entire C: drive,
My C: drive contains the installation of all my software in addition to the data. All what I need is a backup system that takes all the contents of the drive C: (software + Data) such that in case of failure on drive C: then format can be applied and both the software and data can be restored as they were before the format.

Currently my Windows 7 is on the C drive, now my question is this: Is there a way I can say put in a SSD, then copy my entire windows and the Programs Files, Program Files x86 and the users folder to it, then switch my old HDD to the D drive and the SSD to the C and have it work just fine? Is there an easy way to do this? or will it require me to reinstall windows to do it? Been thinking about getting a 120 GB ssd for my os/program drive, and using my 1.5 tb drive as storage.

In XP, I re-directed My Documents to a Data partition. In my old computer with Windows 7, I think I used TweakUI (which worked) and Junction for my iTunes folder.In my new Windows 7 laptop, I read about this mklink feature (which seemed to pass me by). Before I got a chance to use this, I selected all of the visible (non-system) folders in c:usersmyusername and cut 'n' pasted them to d:usersmyusername.To cut a long story short, this worked. Obviously i know it didn't move system related folders but it works.Basically it looks like Windows has automatically changed the target of the folders I moved . Is this right?

This is very frustrating now...Yes, I know it´s because of my lack of knowledge about Windows 7 and security/permission rules and settings. But still.
Hopefully someone is kind enough to help me out a bit here and maybe I´ll understand better (hopefully)
I´ve just installed Windows 7 and this is what I want to do:
Copy my old Favorites-folder (Win Explorer 8) from the old harddrive to my new folder in Win 7.
I had some problems accessing my old folder in My Documents on the old harddrive but i changed permission and ownership and finally I could access it and copy the folder. But. It seems impossible to copy it into c:UsersxxxxxFavorites
It just says "You´ll need to provide administrator permission to copy this folder"
I´ve disabled the built in admin account and tried every fix I´ve found but I still receive the same message. How can I fix this??? Seems like a simple thing to do but i just cant get it to work.

My PC was somehow configured so that I cannot copy files from the internal hard drive to a USB pen drive (e.g., to make a back-up).
When I try to do this, I get the following message: "Destination Folder Access Denied You need permission to perform this action."
There is definitely enough room on the USB drive. The USB drive is configured with a password, which I entered correctly after plugging in the drive. After doing this, I am able to see the files from the drive. The configuration is such that I can copy files from the USB drive to the PC's hard drive, but I can't copy in the other direction, which is what I need to do.
This sounds like a Windows permissions issue to me. I have taken ownership of the file in question, and I have assigned full control to that file.

I have windows 7 x64 installed, and need to copy that partition to another partition on the same drive, and be able to boot between the two using EasyBCD. One will be normal/office stuff, the other will be music production stuff.I copied the partition (C) using Acronis (bootCD mode) no problem, then copied that Acronis clone to the new partition (D). Booted back in to windows and used EasyBCD to add the new partition (D) to the boot menu with a new name.Now when I boot I get the boot choices as expected, but no matter which one I choose, it always boots into the original partition (C)? I've used EasyBCD quite a bit before without problems but this one is driving me nuts.

I'm trying to back-up our office DVR system that came with some very expensive software (and the warranty on it has already expired.)So I bought identical hard drives (to the ones installed -- 3 total) so now I need to make one-to-one copies from the originals. My idea was to hook each drive pair (original and backup drives) to my other Windows 7 desktop and do the copy, but what software shall I use?

But when I remove it,my pc shows ntldr not found.While when I reconnects the Samsung hdd,it boots normal. Does it means that the Samsung hdd contains the bootloader files.If so,How can i transfer them to my seagate hdd(the one which has the OS) to allow the pc to boot without the Samsung hdd(faulty one)..
