I have bought a new hard drive to use as my main one, and am planning to use my current, larger one as backup, as i found i was not filling it. So i need to completely duplicate my current drive, a 1tb one, with 180gb of stuff, to my new 320gb drive. i have made a full disc image with driveimage xml, which comes to 180gb, but when i try to restore it to the 320gb one, it says it it too big. How do i gp about setting this up? do i need to copy the system reserved partition to the new drive too for windows 7 to work, or can it not be copied? should i install windows 7 to the new drive from my install disc? if so, how to i get my settings, programs and data back without too mcuh hassle?

Am I only allowed to make one copy of my Recovery partition?I have a Dell desktop, with a built in Dell recovery partition. I have read that. "You are only allowed to make ONE copy of your Recovery partition and it must be on to ROM CDs or DVDs."I didn't know that when I made a copy of C and recovery partition to my external drive,
I am a bit concered that I can only do this once. Is that strictly true?

This is very frustrating now...Yes, I know it´s because of my lack of knowledge about Windows 7 and security/permission rules and settings. But still.
Hopefully someone is kind enough to help me out a bit here and maybe I´ll understand better (hopefully)
I´ve just installed Windows 7 and this is what I want to do:
Copy my old Favorites-folder (Win Explorer 8) from the old harddrive to my new folder in Win 7.
I had some problems accessing my old folder in My Documents on the old harddrive but i changed permission and ownership and finally I could access it and copy the folder. But. It seems impossible to copy it into c:UsersxxxxxFavorites
It just says "You´ll need to provide administrator permission to copy this folder"
I´ve disabled the built in admin account and tried every fix I´ve found but I still receive the same message. How can I fix this??? Seems like a simple thing to do but i just cant get it to work.

My PC was somehow configured so that I cannot copy files from the internal hard drive to a USB pen drive (e.g., to make a back-up).
When I try to do this, I get the following message: "Destination Folder Access Denied You need permission to perform this action."
There is definitely enough room on the USB drive. The USB drive is configured with a password, which I entered correctly after plugging in the drive. After doing this, I am able to see the files from the drive. The configuration is such that I can copy files from the USB drive to the PC's hard drive, but I can't copy in the other direction, which is what I need to do.
This sounds like a Windows permissions issue to me. I have taken ownership of the file in question, and I have assigned full control to that file.

I installed Ubuntu on my computer a few months ago and created another partition for it on my 1TB hard drive. I didn't really care for Ubuntu so I decided to delete the partition it was on. That might have been a mistake. Well, now there's 87.68GB of free space on my hard disk that I can't use and I don't know how to add it back to my c: partition.
There was another post about this a couple years ago, but I don't understand the instructions and am not actually sure if it worked. Can someone explain how to do this, please? I'm not completely computer illiterate, but I'm not familiar with partitioning disks. It was just the one time with Ubuntu.

I have a generic System 7 64 bit system with a 1 TB SATA drive. It has one hard drive which I have partitioned into 4 partitions, with C: being where I put all the system software. The board has mulitple SATA ports.Change considered: cloning the C: partition onto a new SSD so that I can get the performance boost of an SSD. There are some heat problems with existing hard drive so I probably need to change it out, so I would also like to clone the D:, E:, and F: partitions to a new hard drive.I have cloned a single physical drive to another physical drive, and the software (Ghost, or the like) usually handles it ok, so that all I need to do is adjust some partition sizes, and then disconnect the old hard drive and everyting is good. This includes cloning a single hard drive with multiple partitions to being cloned to a new single hard drive with identical numbers of partitions.Compared to my prior experience, is there something different about cloning one partition only vs cloning the whole drive. My proposed plan is:
1) Install SSD
2) clone C: to SSD only
3) clone D: E: F: of old drive to new drive.
4) remove old drive.

I'm trying to back-up our office DVR system that came with some very expensive software (and the warranty on it has already expired.)So I bought identical hard drives (to the ones installed -- 3 total) so now I need to make one-to-one copies from the originals. My idea was to hook each drive pair (original and backup drives) to my other Windows 7 desktop and do the copy, but what software shall I use?

I recently installed windows 7 on my Seagate hdd while the Samsung hdd was connected.Unfortunately,my samsung hdd is starting to die so I have to remove it for RMA. But when I remove it,my pc shows ntldr not found. While when I reconnects the Samsung hdd,it boots normal. Does it means that the Samsung hdd contains the bootloader files. If so,How can i transfer them to my seagate hdd(the one which has the OS) to allow the pc to boot without the Samsung hdd(faulty one)..

I am currently using a 250Gb hard drive that is almost ful due to me recording large amounts of audio and other music related products(VST's and effects etc).
I need to buy a new 1Tb hard drive and copy all of the 250gb hard drive right across, Win 7 included. Everything even virus' if they are there and I need for it to just run straight away as though nothing has changed except for the extra 750Gb of memory if you can see what I mean. I don't want to have to go re-install of of my stuff.
I have a 1Tb drive that I am using as backup at the moment, a slave drive but it has a lot of valuable data on it so I don't want to wipe it, I would prefer to buy a new 1Tb and go from there. Can this be done? how to copy a whole hard drive over like this??

I'm preparing to upgrade to 7 Pro. My current system has drive C: with XP...and Drive D: with Win 2000. I want to wipe D: and copy/clone my existing XP Pro on C: to D:...and then install fresh 7 Pro upgrade on C:
Question is what's the best way to clone/copy my good XP installation on drive C: to D: and maintain a bootable XP Pro on the newly transferred to drive D: ?
For the time being I want to set up a dual boot between my new 7 installation on C: and my XP Pro bootable installation migrated/copied/cloned to drive D:
Reason of course is my current C: drive is a much larger/faster drive than my current D: so I'd rather have Windows 7 Pro on the current C: drive with XP Pro running now
What's the best way to copy/clone XP on C: to a bootable XP on drive D: ?

I want to do a 100% backup of the C: drive on my PC. Since Tom's Forums still doesn't have a forum search (although I'm sure it did before Tom sold out) I'll ask in innocence.Supposedly XCOPY has been bonged in Win 7 and replaced by ROBOCOPY. If I copy ROBOCOPY to another drive, will I be able to do a 100% backup of my C: drive to an external USB 1.5TB HDD? Is there there something better that might just compress and backup?
