Best �technology� to back up (to take an image) for the entire �C:� drive,
My C: drive contains the installation of all my software in addition to the data. All what I need is a backup system that takes all the contents of the drive C: (software + Data) such that in case of failure on drive C: then format can be applied and both the software and data can be restored as they were before the format.
In XP, I re-directed My Documents to a Data partition. In my old computer with Windows 7, I think I used TweakUI (which worked) and Junction for my iTunes folder.In my new Windows 7 laptop, I read about this mklink feature (which seemed to pass me by). Before I got a chance to use this, I selected all of the visible (non-system) folders in c:usersmyusername and cut 'n' pasted them to d:usersmyusername.To cut a long story short, this worked. Obviously i know it didn't move system related folders but it works.Basically it looks like Windows has automatically changed the target of the folders I moved . Is this right?

I'm backing up about 1.7 TB of data to a network drive, and its taking an extremely long time. I'm running Windows 7 64bit Ultimate. I'm fully up to date. I saw some random article about a hotfix for this issue and downloaded it but I guess I already had it installed as the installation wouldn't proceed, but instead said it wasn't for my computer. Should I look towards another software backup program?

I'm trying to a backup with a system image, It says for the storage drive when selected that it will not do a system image. But when I select the 640, it doesn't say it won't, but will not let me choose any files from that drive. Not sure what is going on.
I just got a new laptop DELL Inspiron 15R N5110 (i3 processor, 3GB ram, 500 GB hard disk) 2 days back. Suddenly the system started lagging and it hanged last day. When I tried 2 restart, it said there is an error in loading d hard disk. It asked me 2 boot several times. The laptop now have started making clicking noises. Its now even getting heated up also. I ain't able to restart it now. I've my documents saved on d laptop in a separate drive. (I had partitioned d drive as C and D where D is for my personal data). I m very much concerened about the data which is present in d laptop now. Will I be able 2 retrieve it back??? How should I repair it?

I've encrypted the entire drive, not just made an encrypted container.My question is though, if I use the windows 7 backup and restore feature, and backup the hard drive to a NAS device, in the event of the laptop being stolen, or if I choose to work with files on another computer, will the files which windows 7 backs up work? I work in IT, so have years of experience here, however encryption is something which I am only just learning. If the windows 7 backup and restore feature will not support this, can anyone recommend an alternative? I've looked into Acronis True Image Home 2012, however still need to evaluate this.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have 2x160gb intel SSD disks running as RAID0. Recently my motherboard had failed and I replaced it with new one (different model). Couldn't access OS because apparently some RAID data is kept on the motherboard and that was gone, so I decided to use a backup. Booted from windows 7 installation disk and selected backup,
I click on 'repair', get to the 'select a system image backup'. Select 'use the latest available system image (recommended). Click 'next' I get the message 'all disk to be restored will be formatted and replaced with the layout and data in the system image'. Click Yes. But then got an error saying:
"The system image restore failed. The disk that is set as active in BIOS is too small to recover the original system disk. Replace the disk with a larger one and retry the restore operation. (0x80042407)"
Disk is completely empty with only 1 partition (deleted all partitions and reformatted and then created one). Before motherboard problem I had several partitions, but I imagine that restore would recreate them. Why do I get 'disk to small error' when I am restoring on the same disk? RAID configuration problem? Could stripe size be an issue here?

I had it plugged into my laptop when I was blowing it off and putting a copy of XP Pro on it. When it said to delete the partition, I clicked on the USB drive on accident. Now plugging it into Win 7 computer, it wants to format it. Is there any way to get my files? I have one word document in particular that has been my life's work. I had not backed it up in over 2 months.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have been having issues with the booting of my c drive. I just installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 64 onto a fresh hard drive and it is booting. What I want to do is copy over the entire contents of my original C drive over to the new drive. I have a second computer to do this on and am not sure how to do it. I doubt that dragging and dropping will copy all the hidden and system files, which is what I want to do.
The reason I don't want to simply make an image of the first drive and restore that is that the original drive does not boot AND contains a system partition that I don't want to bring along. I am hoping to marry the bootability of the new drive with the files and information on the original drive.

I had two issues with this laptop - first, my battery was no longer accepting a charge unless i turned the laptop off, took the battery out, put it back in, then turned the laptop back on again.I seem to have fixed this issue by updating the bios. It has been charging normally for a few weeks now.The other issue has me completely stumped.It has been doing this for several months now and just seems to be getting worse. When I put this laptop to sleep... if i open it up within an hour or so, it wakes up just fine in no time. If i put it to sleep (it is set to sleep when the lid is closed) and then wake it up the next day (or longer), it takes up to ten minutes to find itself. It's the strangest thing. The screen comes up right away, and you can see all of the programs running - but the system is thinking and thinking and pretty much unresponsive for about 5-10 minutes each time. It's like it has lost itself and takes that much time to remember what the heck it was doing last time it was awake. Once it finds itself it's perfectly fine again.

I just got it back from the warranty repair center, where they replaced the hard drive and graphics fan & heatsink, and reloaded the factory windows version. Before I sent it out for repair, I used Windows Backup to create a backup of all my files on a Toshiba casio 500GB external USB drive (I had over 300 GB of files, so it was easier to use Windows Backup than drag and drop all the files, at least at the time). Now that I have the laptop back, I'm having trouble restoring my files. When I go to Control Panel-> Backup & Restore, a message appears in the restore section, saying "Windows could not find a backup for this computer." I've tried reconnecting the drive as well as restarting my computer, but to no avail. I can see and explore the files in My Computer, so I know the hard drive is properly connected.

However, sometimes, Windows will take an unusually long time to boot, it will just sit there, and then I will hear my mechanical hard drive (data drive, no OS files installed on it, connected via a different SATA port) spin up, and at that point the Log in screen will appear.
I'm curious as to why it needs to access the data drive at all, there is no System Reserved partition on it, and no Windows files as far as I can see. I have attempted to keep it as a purely data storage drive.
have been struggling with my system taking 2-3 minutes to find drivers for any memory stick I plug in to any of 3 USB ports on my Acer 1810T. When the process finally completes, the transfer speeds are about 1MB/s or less.Another (possibly related?) problem is when I insert any SD card in the dedicated slot for the first time, everything is fine. Once I remove and either re-insert (or insert a different card), nothing appears. I get a message saying "process is already in memory". I have to reboot to get things working again.

I seem to be struggling with disk space even though I didn't install any Gb-sized applications like recent games or 3d modelling programs. I have 4Gb of RAM so I'd like to have that space free for hibernation. Why is it that if I open "my computer" the C: drive appears as having 3.75 Gb free (from 30.0 Gb) but if I open the drive directory and select everything (windows files, programs, etc) and select "properties" what appears is "22.9 Gb, 23.1 Gb on disk" which should be leaving at least 6.9 Gb free? I do have "show hidden folders and files" selected.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently reorganized my computer and this included a fresh install of Windows 7 on a new disk. I backed up all my data on the old disk so that I could make sure I wasn't losing any important documents or whatever.I'm now sure I've got everything off the disk that I needed and am using the disk as a storage disk for media. However, there are still folders that I can't seem to erase in the Program Files, Program Files (x86), and Windows directories. Most of the files are gone but about 12GB of junk remains that I no longer need. Whenever I try to delete what is left, it says I need permission from TrustedInstaller and it won't let me delete these files.Is there any way to blow these directories away without having to format the disk? I really can't format because the disk is almost full with data that I need to keep and I don't really have any other disks to temporarily back these files up to.

I've been looking high and low for a way to backup just my system state, the way I used to be able do in Windows XP. There was even a guided tutorial to help you do it on the MS web site. The resultant file was much smaller than a partition backup and was often more useful for disaster recovery than the simple restore point recovery. It only took a few minutes to create. It seems NTBackup is gone. Is there any way to do what ntbackup used to do?

View 3 Replies View RelatedDid a fresh install of Windows 7 64-bit and all my apps, deleted Windows.old, defrag'ed and activated. Then created a SYSTEM IMAGE using Win 7 BACKUP and RESTORE, so far so good.
Win 7 and my apps take up 43.9 GB on the hard drive but the SYSTEM IMAGE it created on my external drive is only 23.7 GB. Tried it on my laptop with similar results ISO was about half the HDD. Does that sound right? Just seems the ISO should have matched the HDD GB-wise unless it compresses or something.
Question about Windows 7 Ultimate's built in backup system.
If I create a full system backup of my "C" drive, then do a restore, will it just install the "C" drive partition only, or will it overwrite the entire HD, thus wipping the rest of the partitions? Not looking to have the other partitions wiped!

How often would you do a whole system image? I was thinking of only doing that every few months or less. Each image would be 80GB.
I'd like to backup my entire System or at least most of it onto a seperate Computer/NAS but as the size of what has to be transferred has gotten quite big in the meantime ( 4TB+ ) so I'm running into a problem concerning the time it takes to do this.Let me get some facts about me:Right now I consider myself a Noob when it comes to networking 2 PC's together mainly because I'm not working with it that much. Other than that I can solve pretty much any other computer problem in the blink of an eye. What I'm looking for:
- A system that serves as a backup for my entire current system which has about 4TB of storage housing - MANDATORY!
- A system that does the Copy/Move Process of the respective files fast - MANDATORY! Waiting 11.65h to transfer 1 TB of files at~25 MB/Sec over a GBit Network is an absolute no go. If possible I'm looking for something that rivals the 150-200 MB/Sec from my internal RAID-0.
- A system that serves as a MediaServer for my Home Cinema System either directly connected to the TV or a PS3 - OPTIONAL What I've tried so far: I recently bought myself a QNAP TS-412 which transfers the files at speeds of ~25 MB/Sec not giving me a happy face. Blame me for trusting the clerk at the shop where I bought it before reading through the specs. What I could do: Build a second PC from former HighEnd bits and pieces acting as a homemade NAS. Question is will this give me the results that I demand or will it lack the same way as the NAS?
