OS Takes A While To Boot, Access Other Drive

Sep 1, 2012

Recently installed Windows on a SSD, very satisfied with its performance so far.

However, sometimes, Windows will take an unusually long time to boot, it will just sit there, and then I will hear my mechanical hard drive (data drive, no OS files installed on it, connected via a different SATA port) spin up, and at that point the Log in screen will appear.

I'm curious as to why it needs to access the data drive at all, there is no System Reserved partition on it, and no Windows files as far as I can see. I have attempted to keep it as a purely data storage drive.

XP Cannot Access Other Drive With Dual Boot

Nov 18, 2009

I've got a bit of a perplexing problem here that I hope somebody can provide some insight on. Set up the dual boot with your (very awesome) tutorial and everything works perfectly there. Windows 7 was installed first to the C: drive, XP is on an E: partition of the same drive. The D: drive is a second physical drive that is just used for file storage. If it matters, both physical drives are paired drives in Raid1.

The problem comes when I've loaded into Windows XP, I can't access the D: storage drive. It reads as size 0, and can't be formatted or read.

Under Windows 7, everything works. I can access the storage drive fine and have no problems using it.

I originally thought it was a permissions thing because the D: drive was formatted in Windows 7, but in XP I can read from the Windows 7 C: drive just fine.

I am at a loss, can anybody offer any suggestions as to why the drive would read fine under 7 but not when in XP?

Access 2010 - Moving Between Text Boxes Takes Time

May 4, 2011

I have a form which has many text boxes. My default language has been set to Arabic so each text box accepts Arabic entry to begin with. In some text boxes I need to enter English only, so I have set the language in that text box to be English. When the cursor comes to this text box, it takes little time than usual. After entering the text to move to the next text box also it takes a little more time. To sum up, whenever the cursor reaches the text box that has been set to accept a particular language, it takes more time to enter and exit. How can I overcome this problem.

Windows 7 RAID Drive Access From Dual Boot XP?

Jul 16, 2012

I have set up a dual boot- Windows 7 pro & XP ultimate, both on separate SSD's, all OK. I also have two 3TB HDD's set up under windows 7 RAID, all OK. In XP under drive management the RAID drives show up twice, once as 775GB unused drives with no drive letter allocated and also as 2.7GB RAID drives with status 'failed', drives marked as 'missing'. Is there a way I can get the RAID drive accessible under XP?

Takes 10 Minutes To Boot

Dec 14, 2009

I'm not sure if this is the ISO (doubt it) or my hardware (more likely).

I have motherboard: Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H
BIOS version F2 (updated today 12/12/2009)

CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 245
RAM: ddr2 800, 4GB (2x2GB)
Windows: 7 Ultimate 64bit
Video: GeForce 8800 GT 512MB, PCI-Expressx16 -- latest driver
from nvidia (downloaded today 12/12/2009)
Monitors: two (2) 19" Widescreen LCD. One is DVI, another is VGA+adapter=DVI.

Problem:
Win7 setup (install) -> first restart -> bios finished -> blank/black screen for 10 minutes (or so)... then win7 loads and resumes fine.
This 10-min delay happens every time win7 restarts. Note that this happens even initial setup/install, no other programs installed yet.

Previous OS: Windows XP Pro 32bit, SP2. No problem with booting.

I have tried unplugging one monitor, switching, using the onboard ... all with same result.

Can anyone help me, I'm desperate -- about to ditch win7 and go back to XP pro.

Computer Takes About 7 Minutes To Boot?

Feb 1, 2012

I recently installed a WD 15k Raptor hard drive and my computer now takes about 7 minutes to boot up, it gets stuck at the starting screen, where no hard drive action will happen, then 7-8 minutes later there will be loads of activity then will start up, ive tried narrowing it down, by removing the old hard drive (because im using the other old hard drive that had the OS on for media) and just running the new one, but no luck, I also tried reinstalling Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on my old hard drive, which had no problems before, but the same effect, takes 7-8 minutes to boot. Ive even tried removing any new hardware I installed before it, but still the same problem, Ive asked a lot of people and Ive had various solutions, but no effect, I think its to do with the power supply, or the SATA cable and power addapter I purchased for the new hard drive. Ive also tried booting in safe mode, and it still takes the same time to boot.Computer spec:Processor: i7 870RAM: 8GBGPU: AMD Radeon HD6870HDD: WD 15k 300GB Raptor HDD, WD 5400 1TB HDDPSU: 500W

Pc Takes Longer To Restart Then To Boot?

Jul 6, 2011

Let me explain, I just noticed that when I restart my pc, the restart precess seems to hang at the motherboard screen for more then 3 times the time it does when I boot the pc from being switched off(a good 15-20 seconds at Mobo screen on restart).

The problem is I think it only started doing this after I accidentally uninstalled a hard drive driver and the pc shut down(and I think restarted). The hard drive seems fine now, the driver was reinstalled, I'm just a little concerned I could have caused a problem, or is this normal?

So the question is simple, Is it normal for a pc to take longer(at least 3 times) at the motherboard screen when you restart then when you boot up from an off position. If the answer is no then I suspect it could be something I've done to it, as I never noticed it taking that long before.

My basic pc spec is:

i5 2500
assus h67
8gb ram
560ti

I just checked, when I start up the pc normally it stays on motherboard screen for 6 seconds, when I restart it stays on the screen for 24 seconds.

Windows 7 Takes Several Minutes To Boot?

Dec 22, 2011

My computer does not run smoothly, and I cannot figure out why. My computer takes upwards of five minutes to reboot, with several minutes on the "Windows is Shutting Down" screen and several minutes on the initial boot. The delay even includes starting the computer in Safe Mode.Additionally, I am having tremendous amounts of graphical problems while running any game I have on my machine, including Rig N' Roll, Nascar 2003, Max Payne, and Skyrim (even on the lowest settings). Random discolored shapes will appear and stretch throughout the screen. Black lines show up and the graphics are so unbearable that I cannot play any games functionally. For example, when going through the very beginning of Skyrim, the screen would turn almost completely white and stayed that way until I exited to desktop.

The graphical problems are not only in games, as even browsing on the internet can cause random thin horizontal black lines to appear across the screen. The lines remain even if I shut off my monitor and turn it on again, so the monitor does not appear to be the problem.I have run full scans in safe mode of Malwarebytes and Symantec Endpoint Protection Antivirus, with no detections of virus, spyware or malware. I don't know what else to do.I have the most recent (as of today) Windows updates with the exception of one. The update of KB 911895: Other Hardware - HID Non-User Input Data Filter, refuses to update.

PC Suddenly Extremely Slow At Boot, Starting Windows Takes For Ever

Oct 19, 2012

The problem started 3 days ago when I was playing World of Warcraft and I was alt-tabing (nothing special, just ordinary stuff). After a load screen, where the game normally starts loading stuff, the alt-tabing was inresponsive and while I was in desktop, clicking WoW icon had no effect, like I wasn't clicking it. Soon I realized Firefox wasn't working as intended, so I pressed the reset button on my case. The pc gave me an error that, if i remember correctly, was that no boot device found. I played a little with plugging-unplugging my USB devices and the problem fixed after about 10 minutes. All good since yesterday afternoon.

So yesterday I got the exact same problem while I was playing an another game, but still at loading screen. The computer boots (from zero) very slow, even getting to "Starting Windows" screen takes a minute, and until I see the windows icon (the one about the SW text) 15 minutes pass. I left home and left the pc at that icon, and when I was back it was at login screen (weird because I only have 1 account without password so I don't ever get there). I pressed my account icon and after around 10 seconds (notice the time for just pressing a button) I got the "Welcome" screen, with the circle moving smoothly. I tried to use my Windows installation disc to find a boot problem, however it takes for ever to find a problem. Also tried booting in safe mode, but it takes a long time to load (haven't left it enough hours to load, I think it got stuck at some point).

My initial thought was of course a HDD failure. I have tried removing the ram sticks, unplugged everything but the DVI cable, played a little with the HDD sata cables, but nothing. The only thing I haven't tested is PSU.All the few operations I have managed to see (like the SW screen or the clicking) take a huge amount of time. I suspect it might not be a boot, or even HDD related, error but something else. The problem so far is the speed. The only thing I have seen to be working normally is navigating in the BIOS menu (which is graphical, I have an Asus motherboard). Also notice that just before I manually rebooted my PC, alt-tabing was inresponsive (not crashing, just very slow probably).

** EDIT ** : chkdsk reported no bad sectors

PC specs:

Windows 7 64-bit
Intel i5 2400

Windows 7 Takes Up Lots Of Space On 30GB Drive

Sep 25, 2009

I have Windows 7 64-bit running on a OCZ Solid Series 30 Gb Solid State Drive. I seem to be struggling with disk space even though I didn't install any Gb-sized applications like recent games or 3d modelling programs. I have 4Gb of RAM so I'd like to have that space free for hibernation. Why is it that if I open "my computer" the C: drive appears as having 3.75 Gb free (from 30.0 Gb) but if I open the drive directory and select everything (windows files, programs, etc) and select "properties" what appears is "22.9 Gb, 23.1 Gb on disk" which should be leaving at least 6.9 Gb free? I do have "show hidden folders and files" selected.

Windows 7 Laptop Cannot Access Drive From WinXP Machine Via USB Drive Dock?

Oct 13, 2012

Background: I have a WinXP desktop machine with a hard drive that may have a virus/trojan/rootkit/etc. Normal scans on the WinXP machine with MSE or ThreatFire have not discovered the problem. But the best way to scan a drive is to remove it and treat it as a purely 'dummy' data drive plugged into a usb drive dock and run the scan from a clean machine. This way any infected programs and/or O.S. on the drive will have no control to mask or hide themselves. My other computer is an HP Windows 7 laptop. So I removed the hard drive from the WinXP machine and via the USB drive dock and the Windows 7 laptop saw the WinXP drive icon appear. However, double-clicking that icon results in the popup window message[CODE]
