I had it plugged into my laptop when I was blowing it off and putting a copy of XP Pro on it. When it said to delete the partition, I clicked on the USB drive on accident. Now plugging it into Win 7 computer, it wants to format it. Is there any way to get my files? I have one word document in particular that has been my life's work. I had not backed it up in over 2 months.

My C: drive contains the installation of all my software in addition to the data. All what I need is a backup system that takes all the contents of the drive C: (software + Data) such that in case of failure on drive C: then format can be applied and both the software and data can be restored as they were before the format.
I have been having issues with the booting of my c drive. I just installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 64 onto a fresh hard drive and it is booting. What I want to do is copy over the entire contents of my original C drive over to the new drive. I have a second computer to do this on and am not sure how to do it. I doubt that dragging and dropping will copy all the hidden and system files, which is what I want to do.
The reason I don't want to simply make an image of the first drive and restore that is that the original drive does not boot AND contains a system partition that I don't want to bring along. I am hoping to marry the bootability of the new drive with the files and information on the original drive.
In XP, I re-directed My Documents to a Data partition. In my old computer with Windows 7, I think I used TweakUI (which worked) and Junction for my iTunes folder.In my new Windows 7 laptop, I read about this mklink feature (which seemed to pass me by). Before I got a chance to use this, I selected all of the visible (non-system) folders in c:usersmyusername and cut 'n' pasted them to d:usersmyusername.To cut a long story short, this worked. Obviously i know it didn't move system related folders but it works.Basically it looks like Windows has automatically changed the target of the folders I moved . Is this right?

Here's where the trouble started. I have two identical 2TB hard drives and a 3TB drive in my machine. My gut told me to unhook my 2TB drive that I use for photos and music, the other 2TB is my data (C) drive. I said to myself, "Self, you have done this so many times, no problem". Well, problem. It deleted the partitions on my data drive. It never formatted the drive though. After the first reboot, my (C) drive booted and I knew that I was in a heap of trouble.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have Windows 7 Home Premium, 32bit laptop. So this started with my accidentally deleting the 'My Documents'. At the time of deleting, i think it showed, My Documents is too large for recycle bin. That's why i can't find it there. (I have tried 'Recuva' to recover deleted files, but 'cause i'm not much of a computer literate, i didn't know what files to retrieve and what to leave. Though, from the files i did bring back, most are corrupted, overwritten or something.) Also, after My Documents got deleted, under 'C:Users', a padlock has appeared on my '(User Name) Folder' - but 'Public Folder' is fine. As i clicked 'User Name' properties, the 'Share With' showed - 'Nobody'. {other options available were 'Homegroup(read), Homegroup (readwrite) and Specific People'}. Shouldn't it be showing - 'Advance sharing' ?Thus, i thought maybe restoring 'User Name' folder to its previous version would work. When i did that, it said - not enough memory. i tried again, 'cause i knew there was more than half of its total capacity available. {I regularly keep a check on it.} But after repeating the restoring process, i again got 'Not Enough Memory'. Later, when i opened the C:Drive it really showed that suddenly the drive was low on space- very, very low. i tried 'disk clean' and deleted most of the things from there. Then i opened C:Drive to check. Instead of making more space, i saw 3.62 GB of Free Space lessen to 2.72 G.B ! However, i still tried for the forth time to restore 'User Name' folder to previous version and got the same regretable 'Not Enough Memory'.

View 1 Replies View RelatedA folder has disappeared from an external hard drive, as confirmed by plugging it into another computer and checking, searching for several filenames it should contain on all possible drives (with hidden files shown), and searches with Recuva and testdisk of deleted files. There is no discrepancy between the size of the remaining folders and the reported size of the folder that contained it along with the remaining folders.
The drive in question is a 2TB WD Mybook external that may be showing its age- another folder had a cyclic redundancy check error, and the folder in question developed one several weeks later. I'm making plans to move my data off and have already duplicated the most important files on it.When the folder developed the CRC error mentioned in the previous paragraph, I ran scandisk. It was after running that utility that I found it had disappeared, so that is the most likely reason. However, the other folder remained (with error unfixed, eventually resolved by using testdisk to copy the folder to another drive.)
Honestly don't know y I deleted it but, I was cleaning files from my drives while in Linux and I deleted the system volume folder from one of my hdds and now all my data is inaccessible. Haven't touched the drive since, would like a surefire way to get it back. I am using an internal card reader, and have virtually eliminated it being a hardware problem because a new replacement unit gives the same results.The first time a card is placed in the reader after the computer is booted, the card is recognized but not the contents. In Windows Explorer, the card is designated "Removable Disk (H)". When I attempt to navigate to the contents, a window opens titled "Insert Disk", prompting that a disk be inserted into the drive.I can correct this on subsequent card insertions by clicking on the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon in the system tray. When clicking on the specified card/device (only item showing) I am prompted that "Removable Dish (H)" is currently in use". There are no applications open including Windows Explorer. Of the choices given, (Cancel, Try Again and Continue) selecting Continue results in an indication that it is safe to remove the hardware.When I remove the card and replace it, I don't get the expected Autoplay prompt, but when I open Windows Explorer the disk shows with the same drive designation, but this time with the volume showing instead of "Removable Disk". I can then navigate and find files and folders on the card.Removing the card again and reinserting it using the same procedure the second time results in the Autoplay window opening and the contents of the card being recognized in explorer. At this point everything works as expected and will continue to until the computer is rebooted.I would like to find a way to have the volume and contents of the card recognized and the auto play window open the first attempt after the computer is booted.

So I went to the series of iso files and extracted them to a new folder but 4 minutes later all the files were in just one big iso and when I tried to extract that, it said the archive couldn't be accessed. I'm not trying to make a bootable disk; I need the files within the iso and I would rather not waste DVDs unnecessarily.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just got a new PC with Windows 7 installed and have run into this issue twice, both times with a particular folder - let's call it "UsefulDocuments2" (the actual folder name DOES have a 2 at the end, but there is no folder called "UsefulDocuments").
Sometimes, when I try to view the folder contents using Explorer or through Windows Live Mail (in an attempt to include a file in the folder as an attachment), I can't view the contents of the folder. When I access the folder, it has the proper path listed in the address bar of the window and displays the number of items (171) in the lower left corner. However, the status bar just says "Searching for items..." except I can occasionally see it flicker to say "171 items."
While it is "Searching for items..." (which is 99.9% of the time), it doesn't display any of the contents of the folder. The scrollbar on the side of the window constantly flickers - it's recognizing that there are 171 items in the folder and that the scrollbar is necessary, but then keeps re-searching the folder contents, I guess.
Weirdly, if I change the folder name to, say, "UsefulDocuments" it works fine (at least right now). If I then change it back to "UsefulDocuments2" it reverts to its old behavior. Also, if I open a file in it in Word (2010), I can view and access the contents of the folder without any problem at all.
Obviously, I can just change the folder name, but don't really want to for organizational reasons, and also am just curious as to what's going on and how to fix it should it happen to other folders, etc.
I bought a sony vaio, with Windows 7 home premium 64 bit, but the manufacturer had installed 32 bit OS instead of 64. The service center guys re installed the 64bit OS for me using recovery media(DVD-Rs) , but what i'm confused is, whether the recovery partition has the same old 32bit OS which came with the laptop?
