Chkdsk/r Has Been Stuck For More Than 24 Hours At Stage 4

Jan 15, 2013

I'm running a Chkdsk/r on my WIndows 7 laptop. The HDD in it has size of about 500 gigabytes, and 400 gigabytes have been used. There's no symptoms of failing recently, but I've got a feeling that it must be checked. So I ran Chkdsk/r about more than 24 hours ago. When it reached stage 4 of 5 at about 36 percent (316831 of 586736 files processed),it seem to be stuck. and It has been the same state for about 30 hours now. But the harddisk is seem to be still active as I can still hear it running. And no, there're no weird voices that came from the harddisk. Is it normal judging by the size of my HDD and the size of its usage ?Should I stop it or let it continue ?P.S. : the chkdsk is running on boot?

"Configuring Stage 3 Of 3 - 0% Complete"

Nov 11, 2011

Working on friends system. Dell Inspiron 530 with Windows 7 Home Premium. Working fine until 3 updates automatically installed. When the system boots up it eventually gets to a window screen that says: "Configuring stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete". Shows working icon for about 30 - 40 seconds then reboots. This goes on and on for hours. I can get to the system diagnostic screen to do a system restore, but it says that there are no restore points. Start up repair also does no good.As a side note, when given the option to "start with command prompt", it will not work either?

Aug 8, 2012

Trying to update manually today and keep getting a loop of blue screen death appears always at 32% of the configuring updates when re-starting up no matter how many updates are selected, which is about 40?? (100Mb)
Can get round it by running safe mode w/networking then it takes 2 cycles to remove the previous updates, I can then use as normal.

Failure Configuring Windows Updates / Reverting Changes

Nov 19, 2012

I have been onto the Microsoft support page and followed various "cures" all to no avail. I have been into control panel and gone through the windows troubleshooting advice and it tells me that it has found and fixed problems with my Windows update and installed 9 updates. When I click to restart I get the same failure message at startup. It seems to recycle the startup procedure 3 times before it eventually gets to my desktop page, and when I look ar my update history there is a long list of failed installations.

Windows 7 Updates Lasting For Hours

Jun 20, 2012

I'm installing some windows updates (53 in fact, yeah I know but it's not my fault ...) on someone's laptop and it's been at update number 6 for 5 hours now. I can't get to the desktop anymore, someone tried to do a shutdown and now the shutdown screen is stuck at update 6. Should I just leave it running for some 24 hours or so. Would it totally destroy Windows if I hardware-shut if off?

New Netbook Has Taken Over 10 Hours To Install System Updates

Jun 29, 2011

I have just purchased a refurbished Dell Inspiron Mini 10 netbook with windows 7 starter. Not sure if the problem I am experiencing is to do with a dodgy netbook or with the operating system. It set up yesterday without any major issues, a bit slow and sticky at browsing but then on powering it up today it started automatically installing updates. Fine I thought, but now some 10 hrs later it has been stuck on update 62 or 62 for the last 5 hours!

I basically can not do anything and have tried rebooting and switching off despite the screen's advise. I have no start menu and none of the keys are responding not even the F range. So am a complete blonde as you may have gathered on such technical matters anyhow. Should I return or is there a simple solution to fixing the matter?? Screen states 'Please do not power off or unplay your machine. Installing update 62 of 62'.

Laptop Won't Shut Off - It's Been Installing Updates For 14 Hours

Nov 22, 2012

My HP laptop has been in shutdown mode all day. This morning I downloaded updates for my HP laptop, and I assume that while I was downloading HP updates, it also downloaded Windows 7 updates. After MY downloads finished I initiated shut down, but it had 18 updates to install. It has been stuck on update # 7 since 10 AM this morning.

I just bought this laptop this fall. I hadn't used it for almost a month, and meant to take it with me to school today, but I had to leave it at home while it shut down. Now I'm wondering if I should interrupt the process since it's been 14 hours since it started this and it still says installing update 7.

I'm worried that if I shut it off manually it will corrupt the bios

Update To Windows Error: Failure To Configuring Windows Updates

Dec 16, 2011

I have Hp Pavillian, Windows 7 Home Premium Edition, 64bit system. Everytime Windows downloads Windows updates, it is successfull downloading and installing, however, I then get a message saying: Failure configuring Windows Updates, Reverting Changes, Do Not turn off your computer.

I have gotten Windows Fixit for Windows Updates and installed....but that does not clear up the problem. I have not wanted to use Restore feature of Windows 7, since I have installed many critical programs that I use. Is there any other solution out in Cyberspace that will help resolve the "Failure Configuring Windows Updats".

Windows 7 Upgrade From Vista Fails At 2nd Stage

Mar 6, 2010

I purchased the Win 7 upgrade (Home Premium). I'm running Vista (64 bit) on my 2 years old HP laptop.I have opted for the custom install to clean up. I've saved all the docs/pics/mp3 etc and I have the programs I need to reinstall. I've uninstalled my anti-virus (AVG) as it seemed reluctant to turn off.I then ran the installation from the cd (64 bit). When I reached the second stage of Expanding Windows Files it throws up the following "Windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase of installation. To install windows, restart the installation".I've tried this 3 times and same thing happens at 20% of the same stage every time.I think I need to post an error log but I searched for and could not find what I needed.

Windows 7 32&64 Bit Won't Pass First Stage Of Completing Installation?

Jun 5, 2011

Windows 7 32&64bit wont pass first stage of Completing Installation due to "VGA DRIVER" After many weeks of trying to fix my mistake

[code]...

Well first off the computer was running Windows xp64 pro and I performed clean install of windows 7 64BIT, Everything was working great and installed all updates up to sp1. Then I got a "twitch" in my brain and deciced to update my bios which I have never done nor even really used bios before and even better I updated when I was using windows 7. I was nable to open safari and I think other things were glitching out but cant remember. So of ourse now I know that my bios settings changed with the update and I attempted to reset and oll back and now have the old bios reinstalled and have tried many different settings with no change in installation. So I thought maby another clean install will fix my mistakes.and now after many many attempts to install both 32 AND 64BIT Windows 7 I found that using Shift f10 and going to device manager I can see that only the VGA DRIVER has a question mark and there is not a display drivers folder. I have tried onboard with no card installed with same results. I have also tried 3 different video cards and even ownloaded the driver for them for windows 7 64 and 32 from microsoft update catalog and it will say it can not be installed at the load driver option during windows 7 install, it will find the driver and put it on the list so it knows what Im trying to install just wont install it.(like it doesn't recognize the hardware)So im going crazy because I know windows 7 will run on this maching I just dont know what to do to make it work again other then find a working vga driver or video card that will install its drivers during the install from the windows 7 disc.I have tried:2 different hd both formated with windows 7 disc from cmd prompt disabled everything in bios I am not needing for installinstalling from usb with nothing attached to motherboard except a video card because I dont think onboard is compatable.Have tried to install in safe mode tried to disable vga during completing installation tried disabling usb after first restart and removed usb.I have tried installing in a different computer then puting hd back in and repair says it can not repair.Well im stuck believing I need to have a working VGA driver for installation to complete or it is not recognizing my card to know to install the driver.I have two VGA cards to try.Geforce 8500GT Geforce 7300LE Also my ethernet driver will not install ither so I dont have internet when using shift f10 to attempt installing driver over internet. I have been keeping it disables to prevent a problem there also.

Sony VAIO BSOD At Windows Password Stage

May 1, 2012

My daughter's Sony VAIO PCG-71911M running windows 7 is suffering from the BSOD within seconds of entering her windows password. The blue screen is all gibberish to me but Bad_Pool_Header appears as the error at the top of the screen on most occassions.

I am able to boot using Safe Mode and Networking and the laptop appears to be very stable when this option is selected.

Through Safe Mode I have attempted system restores which allow me to get past the windows password stage on a normal boot. But I then get error messages and network connectivity is unavailable when i then reboot I end up with the BSOD issue again.

Win7 Freezes After First Stage Of Installing

Then it restarts.. upon restart it boots onto Windows Setup and I get the logo which glows for a while then freezes.

I've looked this up and i've removed ram so I just have 1stick of 1gig and i've unplugged various USB items except my keyboard and mouse and still get the issue.

Any ideas?

Screen Goes Black (PC Does NOT Hang) After First Stage Of Installation

Apr 6, 2010

My problem is that during Windows 7 Ultimate installation (right after the first reboot) the screen goes black! The monitor does not loose the signal because I can still see the green solid LED on it. I have run into this issue four times with four different PCs with four different configurations. The only common denominator here is the type of video card (I say the type of video card because this has happened with different brands and models of video cards). This has happened only with video cards that have DVI, S-Video and VGA ports, but only on the ones that have the VGA port that PLUGS through a little ribbon cable to the card it self. I have successfully installed Windows 7 on systems that have video cards with the same ports but the VGA port is solder to the card. It seems that after the first reboot and after it displays "Starting Windows", Windows thinks that the active port on the video card is the DVI port and NOT the VGA port that has been using up until that point! I know this because I have used a DVI to VGA adapter right after the screen goes black and there it is! the setup process waiting for my input (create a user)...

Device Stage - Devices And Printers Blank

May 15, 2009

Really weird, when selecting Devices and Printers (Device Stage) in the menu the progress bar would take forever and never display anything - just blank.

Finally discovered it was actually a bluetooth issue in services. I don't even know why I looked there - -

THE FIX at least for me..

Click Start button, type "services" into the search program and files box. This brings up a list in the menu, select Services. This should open a list of local services on your system.., Find 'Bluetooth Service" and make sure it has started, right click and set to 'automatic' (mine was already set), Select "Bluetooth Support Service" and start, set to automatic (mine was set on manual) --

This fixed my issue, hopefully yours as well..

Using And Configuring The Windows 7 Firewall

Apr 1, 2010

The Windows 7 Firewall provides a basic level of protection against hackers as soon as you start your computer up. Although the firewall can be configured to filter both incoming and outgoing traffic, by default it only acts like the firewalls in Windows XP and Windows Vista, that is, it will only filter incoming connections. Configuring the Windows 7 Firewall to filter outgoing traffic is a little easier than it was in Windows Vista but is still a complex process and is not covered in this tutorial.

This video tutorial demonstrates the most common configuration options for the Windows 7 Firewall and discusses when you might need to use them. If you need to turn off the Windows Firewall for any reason, the video will also show you how to do that. Finally, we'll also show you how to access the advanced options for the firewall, although these options are not covered in this tutorial.

Configuring Windows 7 Using HP Recovery Manager?

Dec 28, 2011

Due to some problems I was having with updating windows, I decided to recover my HP computer to its factory condition using HP's Recovery Manager.I don't have a recovery disk, so I chose to recover from the recovery partition on the hard drive. I chose to not do a backup and the recovering process went fine. After it was done, I was asked to restart my pc and once it restarted, I was at a black screen which said something along the lines of "setting up devices". After a couple of minutes, a small window showed up with the fallowing message:"Windows setup could not configure windows to run on this computer's hardware." This window shows up when the black screen says "Setting up devices". I press ok, then the black screen says "setup will continue once your computer is restarted". The pc is restarted automatically and this window shows up again. At first, I had unplugged an external USB hard drive and an external wifi antenna, leaving my monitor, mouse, and keyboard plugged. But, after doing some research, I found that some hardware installed inside the pc might also be causing the problem. So, I removed the wireless card, disconnected the DVD drive, and disconnected the cable from the USB and analog ports of the front panel. The only things that were connected (as far as I saw), were the fans, motherboard, power button, and the only hard drive. I went back into the recovery manager and did the recovery again, once it was done and the pc restarted, I was brought back to the same message.

New Laptop - Windows Could Not Finish Configuring The System

Sep 25, 2010

I ordered a refurbished/reconditioned Packard Bell EasyNote TJ74 laptop from a very well known retailer in the UK called Currys. I received it two days ago. Initally, the laptop stayed on for all of about 5 seconds before shutting down, however I have solved that problem by Googling the text and looking here: pxe-e61:media test failure check cable. It was basically trying to boot from something other than the HDD itself, so I set the HDD to the top of the list in the BIOS.Then, the next problem I got was this: I get the "Windows is Starting..." screen, and then a setup services starting message, and then this:"Windows could not finish configuring the system. To attempt to resume configuration, restart the computer."I restart the computer and... nothing happens. No Windows installation/recovery disk came with the laptop. So, I set the laptop to boot from CD in the BIOS and, using a 64-bit edition recovery disc I found online and ran startup repair using it, apparently no problems were found, and I got a message about ensuring I didn't have any cameras etc. attached... ..Someone online recommended I disable digital driver signing, so I did that by pressing F8 at one point when it was booting... it doesn't seem to have made any difference. Safe mode doesn't work either.Currys have told me they can do nothing but send a courier to my house to pick up the laptop... I don't get a replacement, simply a refund. I needed this laptop for Monday as I start university.I've set it back to boot from HDD and I'm getting the "Windows could not finish configuring the system, please restart" message again and again and again, and the system just constantly restarts and the same message appears. It is a never-ending loop!
