I'm installing some windows updates (53 in fact, yeah I know but it's not my fault ...) on someone's laptop and it's been at update number 6 for 5 hours now. I can't get to the desktop anymore, someone tried to do a shutdown and now the shutdown screen is stuck at update 6. Should I just leave it running for some 24 hours or so. Would it totally destroy Windows if I hardware-shut if off?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have just purchased a refurbished Dell Inspiron Mini 10 netbook with windows 7 starter. Not sure if the problem I am experiencing is to do with a dodgy netbook or with the operating system. It set up yesterday without any major issues, a bit slow and sticky at browsing but then on powering it up today it started automatically installing updates. Fine I thought, but now some 10 hrs later it has been stuck on update 62 or 62 for the last 5 hours!
I basically can not do anything and have tried rebooting and switching off despite the screen's advise. I have no start menu and none of the keys are responding not even the F range. So am a complete blonde as you may have gathered on such technical matters anyhow. Should I return or is there a simple solution to fixing the matter?? Screen states 'Please do not power off or unplay your machine. Installing update 62 of 62'.
My HP laptop has been in shutdown mode all day. This morning I downloaded updates for my HP laptop, and I assume that while I was downloading HP updates, it also downloaded Windows 7 updates. After MY downloads finished I initiated shut down, but it had 18 updates to install. It has been stuck on update # 7 since 10 AM this morning.
I just bought this laptop this fall. I hadn't used it for almost a month, and meant to take it with me to school today, but I had to leave it at home while it shut down. Now I'm wondering if I should interrupt the process since it's been 14 hours since it started this and it still says installing update 7.
I'm worried that if I shut it off manually it will corrupt the bios
My computer has been acting like an idiot the last months, freezing a lot, sometimes resulting in a BSOD.
Notable programs that seems to initiate these freezes are Google Chrome and something as silly as pushing the start menu button and searching for something.

For the past day windows wants to install the same 4 updates over and over, I have windows update set to download and let me choose when to install.
I can't understand why I even need them, as I uninstalled net framework. Notice how the update at 8:17 AM., KB2656368, is the same as one of the 4 updates installed at 7:47 PM. Windows wants to install the same four kb files again.How do I stop this?

I know this has been raised in the past but my problem is slightly different.I prefer to choose "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download or install them", however periodically the settings change without my consent to "Never check for updates".This is very frustrating as I am constantly having to keep an eye on this, and change the settings back to what they were in order to receive critical updates, or indeed any other update.The laptop was bought new just under 12 months ago and came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit pre-installed.Has anyone else experienced this, or can anyone advise on a fix?

I am unable to connect to MSE to get updates or to Windows to get updates. I have run Malwarebytes and Emsisoft and neither one can find a bug. Chrome works for a while and the she gets the AW SNAP message.

View 4 Replies View RelatedExtremely slow boot windows 7 usually 8 -10 hours of waiting. To get to this point . has taken this computer 73 hours - from reboot because of hang up to restart. Then internet. Find page. Open. So far no one has answers or believes me, but to try sell me programs that don't work. I've run hunderds of anti virus, malware and other scans to no avail. Deleted history, defrag and unloaded and reloaded Windows 7. I'm this close to get a 3.1 computer which is light years faster with less hang ups.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI refuse to believe my 500g Sata Hard drive that has over 400gs of file and information, is all now magically a paper weight. No Physical damage has happened to the Drive at all. This is the Issue:Originally Half of the Drive was Encrypted with True Crypt and the other Half was the System Drive((C drive 50g)) and a "general" Drive/ ((175gigs)). The Problem started when some odd way it seems My Encrypted drive become corrupted to the point it would no longer easily mount. It would take 4~5Min's to mount as opposed to the normal 4~5 seconds.What happens when it did mount, The Drive was not working correctly. I couldn't access my files on that drive at all. Not only that, While it seemed like it did Mount the True Crypt Drive, my entire CPU became Non responsive. I couldn't do anything. I was unable to click on anything on the desktop, bring up task manager or even ctrl+alt+del to log off or anything. It was like it was frozen but I was only able to move the mouse...I waited a while((15~20Min's)) and went to restart the CPU by holding the power button.
Now When ever I try to load or boot from that Hard drive...Nothing Happens....It hangs at the "starting Windows" screen. I have windows 7-64bit ultimate. I tried to load from the Win 7 disk, and it hangs at a blank Screen. When I tried to use the repair feature of the Win Xp service pack 2((Remember windows XP *_*??))It hangs at analyzing the Hard drive "47850 asapii at 0 at 0 something something"..When I try to use the advance options of the Windows 7 boot, Safe mode of all types hangs at lading the drivers, Last Known good Configuration hangs at starting windows. Its Like part of the HDD doesn't want to load for anything in the world . And When I have mentioned Hangs I mean it sits there for 1~2 hours and nothing has changed.
I have ideas in my head But I don't even Know if they are possible. Oh Oh..at when I try to Load the HDD by having a back up 40g hard drive be the main booter it STILL hangs at the starting windows screen. I know its sometimes suggested to try it HDD in another CPU but if its not the main Boot Drive is that the same thing? Really don't have any Mobos that have Sata Slots for me to try that out on.I'm praying a simple chkdsk would Solve everything But there's no way I can Issue that Command. My Question(s) are:s there a Way to force the CPU to do a chkdsk command pre boot?Is there a way to have the HDD disabled at start up and enable it during the back up drives desktop((Via check for hardware changes or the "Manage" feature by right clicking computer from the start menu

I want to put one in a friend's computer who is running out of space with his old 40G.I bought both 120G at the same time and put one in my laptop and used the other as a USB backup. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a new HP dv6 laptop. The operating system is windows 7, 64 bit. I've had it less than a week. The power option I have set on it (default) calls for the system to go into the sleep mode after 20 minutes(closing the lid). I don't even see any option available to select that would shut the computer down after a certain time. The problem is, after having not used the laptop for approx. 12-14 hours, when I am ready to use it again, it has shut itself down. I don't know why it doesn't stay in the sleep mode.Any ideas why the laptop is shutting down? It's not overheating because I keep it in a cool room and the air flow around it is not restricted.
My Windows 7 hung itsself up this morning. I had to use the power button to restart. I chose Safe Mode. I now have the screen:

That was 8 hours ago and it is still running. I pressed the Cance button and got the answer "Cannot cancel"
Previous Windows OS's let me quickly and easily restore to a time that I wanted, however what I'm getting with 7 is "no restore points have been created". Hmmm. I've searched this forum for an explanation that makes sense to me to no avail; not yet ready to admit to stupidity but will acknowledge that I'm past middle age and well into frustration.
I'm in safe mode now; in regular mode my laptop has slowed to the point of only allowing my desktop to appear & I can't get anything else to work. Every time I click on something that infernal little blue donut just keeps running and running.
64 bit Sony. Is it possible to restore to a config that was working 2 days ago?

View 5 Replies View RelatedAll of a sudden the other night my computer started to freeze/lock up every 1.5 to 2 hours, no matter what I'm doing on it. If I reboot, then just leave it, when I come back a few hours later it's totally locked up and I have to hold the power button down to reboot. If I use it for two hours, say playing a game, eventually the game will freeze up and the same thing happens, I have to power cycle it.
I noticed a couple times that it seems to be explorer.exe that's in a hung state. If I hover my mouse over the taskbar it's just the blue circle spinning. Sometimes I'm able to open task manager (CTRL-ALT-ESC) but that quickly results in it just displaying a blank white window.
- I haven't made any recent changes to my system, hardware or software.
- I've ran a memtest86+ for over 4 hours and no errors.
- I've tried uninstalling a whole crapload of software, including my video card drivers, to no avail.
- I've updated my SSD's firmware to the latest version.
Checking Windows event logs yields only this error but there are lots of them going back to well before this whole freezing issue started: - The driver detected a controller error on DeviceHarddisk5DR7.
There is also this error only once in the last 3 days for which this problem has been occurring:
- The program Explorer.EXE version 6.1.7600.16768 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed.
