Get One Program Shutting Down To Auto-shutdown Another?

Jul 6, 2012

My VPN network has a habit of disconnecting me at odd times while I am sending files and my computer automatically then reconnects me directly thru my IP provider Comcast which is not as secure as I'd like.Is there a way to have the shutting down of one program (VPN) automatically shut down another (TeamViewer etc)?I read today about programs such as KillIt? but could not find much info on its working that is within my limited expertise.

Slow Startup / Shutdown - No Auto Refresh And Update Hangs

Oct 3, 2010

I just installed a retail copy of win 7 on my laptop and have been experiencing some issues. At first everything worked fine but out of the blue my desktop/folders have not been auto-refreshing. Whenever I try to delete or create a new folder I have to manually refresh to the folder in order to view it. When shutting down my laptop it takes 5+ minutes and when my desktop is loading after booting up the laptop it takes several minutes for everything to load and for the win 7 chime.

Finally, it won't allow me to update. When I try to use the windows updater it hangs for a while on "creating restoring point" (which may be normal) but then permanently hangs on installing update 1/16 at 0%. If I try canceling the update nothing happens and even when I try to shut down the laptop it attempts to install the updates but hangs on update 1/16.

From researching these issues I've realized that the auto-refresh problem is not uncommon and has something to do with a network. This may be unrelated but these problems only started to occur when I was transferring pictures via a USB stick.

Windows 7 Auto-Post Install?

Oct 21, 2010

I am trying to create a disc that will automatically install and activate Windows 7 Professional. Included in the installation disk will be several ninite installers that will install the latest versions of programs needed for my department. After windows 7 installs and activates, when the user logs onto the computer he/she needs to be prompted with options to install either Essential List of Programs Suggested List of Programs Complete List of Programs Choosing any of the three options will run Ninite Installer associated with the option. For now the prompt will be implemented as a simple VBScript. I've managed to get the unattended activation and installation step working, but I'm stuck on the prompting step. Does anyone know any way to configure the installation CD to run a script as soon as the user logs onto the computer? In case you're wondering, I'm using VLite to help create the installation CD.

[INSTALL] Auto-unattended.xml Not Recognized When Installing Windows 7 OEM

Aug 6, 2010

I have Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit (x86) , trying to install on x64 architecture (dual core atom proc). I am trying to boot from the DVD, with the Autounattend.xml file on a USB drive (Mushkin 8GB, light blinks when accessed, so I know it is being read from). I have also tried using the file name Unattend.xml per other suggestions. My Autounattend.xml file does not get recognized. No errors are shown, but I explicitly set the locale, language, etc., to US English (en-Us), but I am still prompted by the Windows 7 DVD to select these settings.

Dec 14, 2011

Just found out Win 7 SP1 was not auto-installed in a netbook and a home PC today, even though both machines were set up to auto-update. The SP1 was sitting in the Windows update notification. Is this normal? Also after manually installing SP1 (i.e. click OK in Windows update), some old updates started to pop up and asked to be installed. I suppose they were for the SP1. Is this normal?

Computer Shutdown During Windows 7 Install?

Sep 26, 2011

I downloaded windows 7 from the MSDN Microsoft alliance thing that my professor signed me up for. Anyway while i was installing i got to the part where it said expanding windows files and gave a % or something. Anyway it got to 65% or so and i left the room and when i came back a minute later my computer was off. At first i thought it was probably restarting because i know that is suppose to happen. However when i waited a few minutes i realized it wasnt coming back on. So i tried to hit the power button to turn it on and i get NOTHING! What the heck happened, everything seemed it was running fine. My processor supports 64 bit and i have more than enough hardware to run it fine. I even did the adviser before hand and my system checked out.

Windows 7 Shutdown When Attempting To Install 64 Bit

Aug 21, 2010

Im having a really stressful bug, I'm trying to do a clean windows 7 install. What happens is the setup will load and the splash logo with the 4 colour balls that form a windows logo will appear, but shortly after that it will shutdown, going into a "hibernate" mode and if i try to turn it on with power again there is no video input.I've been searching the internet alot for any answer but nothing has worked

I am using a burned windows 7 disc, I have a OEM key that I bought from newegg however the disc is not with me as I am in Canada and I had it shipped to family who gave me the key through e-mail.Also, I was successful in installing XP on the hard drive, but windows 7 only causes a shutdown. It had windows 7 before that I had installed, but it was the enterprise version and it had no product key so I wiped the hard drive once I bought the legitimate key

New Windows 7 Install - Computer Won't Shutdown?

Oct 28, 2012

I just installed a new SSD drive along with two 1TB drives that I put into a RAID 0 configuration. Everything is running great, bootup is fast.

Weird thing is, when I shut my computer down now, windows seems to shutdown, and I hear my Hard drives turnoff, but the fans and leds on the computer keep running for about 2 to 3 minutes before they shut off. Before with my old HDD, it would shutdown windows and the computer would shutdown immediately afterwards.

I'd like it to shutdown immediately again, I sit there waiting for it to turn off as I want to make sure I don't leave the fans running all night.

Auto-play In Windows 7 Ultimate X64 Doesn't Work On Fresh Install?

Apr 2, 2010

Smallish yet irritating problem with my Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit install - Autoplay doesn't work, and hasn't since I was forced to reinstall a couple of weeks back.Doesn't work for discs inserted, USB flash drives, memory cards, external HDDs plugged in etc (Firewire & ExpressCard/34 not tested). I have of course gone to the Autoplay settings and restored defaults, also tried setting every category (DVD, CD, etc) at "Ask me every time". No luck. I was working fine on the same OS before before I had to reinstall fresh, also on x86 version of Win 7, and on Vista.Nothing wrong with the USB ports/disc drive, inserted media is still detected.

Fresh Install Of Windows 7 - No BSOD But Won't Shutdown Only Restarts

Oct 29, 2011

I've spent probably 7 hours trying to figure this out from searches and different potential resolutions and I am completely stumped. This is a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium on a fairly basic machine. I can boot in to safe mode, disconnect any connection to the network, ensure WOL is turned off via the CMOS, and still Windows 7 will not shutdown. There is no BSOD.

It simply appears to shutdown, but then the computer reboots with the PC offering a beep in the same way as if I performed a cold boot. If I elect to restart this beep will not be reflected. I've tried different drivers and just about everything I can think of and still nothing. The event viewer appears almost entirely clean as well. I've also restored fail-safe defaults in the BIOS as well as Optimized and the issue persists.

Shutdown To Install Update While Using Windows Easy Transfer

Jan 25, 2012

I just got a new computer, and was on the process of transferring my files from my old computer using Windows Easy Transfer. It was taking a while so I left it on overnight. When I checked on it again, it had reboot to install windows updates. Now, I've got a folder in my Users section that apparently weights 0 bytes, but that is taking up easily 100 GB, which I also cannot access; for trying to do so leaves me with the same explorer window, and unable to return using the address bar or the back arrow. Is there anything I can do about it?

PC Hangs On Black Screen During Shutdown - Fresh Install Windows 7 SP1

Oct 17, 2012

I recently got a PC that my office was getting rid of. The PC was in great shape and I was told it worked fine when they gave it to me. They ripped out the hard drive and gave me the machine. As soon as I got it, I put a brand new 2Tb Seagate HDD in. I also replaced the existing RAM (2x1Gb sticks) with 2x 2Gb sticks with the memory speed to match my motherboard. Finally I swapped out the ATI Radeon HD2900XT with a Nvidia Geforce GTX 460. There was a sound card (PCI) I removed as well as a redundant firewire port I unhooked from the Mobo. I then booted and peformed a fresh install of Windows 7 32bit Pro. Everything seemed to be going fine... until I tried to shut down. Windows would freeze on the Shutting Down screen. I mean freeze because the spinning circle would stop and the entire machine was unresponsive.

I read online that pre-Service Pack 1 Windows 7 didn't like multi-core processers and would have issues shutting down, so I updated to SP1 (along with a bunch of other updates). Now when I try to shut down, the Shutting Down screen disappears and the signal to the monitor ends, however the machine stays on. I can hear the fans running and see the lights to the PCI cards still on. Once again I have no option but to hold the power button until it shuts down. One extra note I double checked every driver and they are all up to day. Also when I boot in Safe Mode the PC shuts down fine and I have no problem restarting, just shutting down...

Auto-Install SP1 & 2 And Now No Internet Connectivity

Jul 15, 2011

My grandfather called me yesterday and said the other day - his Dell Desktop automatically downloaded Sp1 and Sp2 and once it restarted - he could no longer connect to the internet. *Note - he is connected via a cable to the router* The computer shows he's connected to the router but it cannot connect to the internet.

He tried to use a "restore point" prior to the update, but they were all gone. There are 2 other computers connected to the internet and neither have any issues - one is connected via a cable and the other wireless.

I checked the settings on the router and modem and don't see any "stand-out" type issues. I'm not sure what else to do or check?

Missing Auto-play Options After Lexmark Software Install

Jul 17, 2011

I recently purchased a lexmark printer and installed the driver and software. After installation I tried to import some pictures off of my sd card using the card reader on my laptop. previous to the lexmark software install I had several options for importing the picture, I usually chose "import using windows". Now that option is gone along with all other options (that I rarely used) and it has been replaced with the lexmark productivity center. I looked at my autoplay options and all the old options are still there for importing videos, but pictures have only productivity studio and general options. So I uninstalled the software and rebooted, the productivity option is gone, but the old ones have not returned.Lastly I tried to do a system restore, but it hangs up on initializing for hours and never completes.Any ideas on how to get my old autoplay options back? I assume it is a registry setting.

Stop Auto-hide Taskbar From Being Auto-ticked?

May 20, 2012

I bought a Asus U36J laptop back in April of last year and ever since then I have been beating around an issue that I dont seem to be able to resolve one way or the other. When ever the laptop is on battery and in battery saving mode it has my taskbar on autohide. If I turn that off, then it stays off right until it is put back into battery saving mode at which point it is "magically" ticked on again.

Is there no way to simply disable that feature, as its annoying me greatly. I know its tied into the battery saving desktop, and I want to keep the battery saving desktop but want a full taskbar all the time. I found a supposed fix to make that happen, and while it actually makes the taskbar appear all the time, it still is a bad hack as any windows I have open wont "attach" to the taskbar but attaches to the buttom of the screen.

So for the love of god is there no sane way for me to keep the battery saving desktop but get rid of the autohiding taskbar. Otherwise I know Asus most likely wont be my laptop of choice next time aroumd.

Laptop Hang On Shutdown After SP1 Install?

May 2, 2012

I was installing SP1 on a recently purchased laptop (Acer Aspire 5742) running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Installation was done via Windows Update and was reported successful. On subsequent required reboot, however, the system just hang, at shutdown screen. Some half a day has passed already and I wonder what now, whether I should go for a hard reset and force turning it off, and what would be the proper way to do that, in hope to cause the least damage, both to Windows and the SP install and even the hardware eventually?... I've tried already hitting the power button, even for some more than a couple seconds, but it didn't go off and I admit I became afraid of persisting on that... I've also already read about having to hold the power button for actually some 60 seconds..

I have two windows updates that keep failing. When i go to shutdown my computer I always have an update icon attached to the shutdown key. The download is always 1of1. Then when i reboot, the update icon is still there. I'm thinking since the two updates are failing, it has something to do with the 1of1 update not downloading properly. I went to windows update to check for new updates, and the only one is the two that keep failing. My computer just blue screened on shutdown today, winch got me thinking i really need to fix this.
