In Windows 7, when the Shut down button has an exclamation point on it, it installs updates before shutting down. How can I see what updates it is going to install before I shut down? Can I turn this option off so it only installs updates when I select?
I just bought a Dell inspiron laptop with windows 7 - I have not had any help from Dell. The issue is that when i shut down my PC it starts to isntall updates and warns me not to shut off the PC. However the updates go on for ever. Every time I shut down, there are two or 10 updates. each update takes 1 hour and can go on to 48 hours. I cant do anything with the PC unitl the updates finish. I force it shut down but when i bring it back up it starts installing the updates. very frustrating. I am very disappointed with Dell because they wont help until I cerate a tech support with them for $300.
Suppose for a minute that you've used windows update and now it has the little shield over Shut Down, indicating that when it shuts down it will install updates. Now suppose when it tries to shut down it cannot install the update and stalls on "Reverting changes". Suppose you are lucky enough to be able to manually restart your computer and everything is fine, but the little shield is still over shut down. Is there a way to remove the updates you have installed before shutting down?
Running W7 Home premium sp1 on Zoostorm Intel 3Ghz i5 8Gb RAM. Each time I shut down I get: 2 windows updates that need to be installed. I looked in the database on PCA forums and thought I had found the solution, following the instructions that apparently came from MS site, and did the following, went into services stopped updates, changed the folder Windows> Software Distribution added OLD to the file name. Returned to services reactivated the updates and rebooted. However this does not seemed to have cured the problem. If I go to Update history, the following update shows 5 times as being a successful installed :Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2 for x64 (KB2656351)running Belarc Advisor it shows two copies of this KB2656351 as two critical updates still required by the computer.
Why does windows 7 (and maybe other windows versions) setup/install updates before shutting down the computer and sometimes even after booting & before login? On other OSes like Ubuntu the updates are installed when doing the update so when you shutdown the computer it just shuts down, so you don't have to wait for a random amount of extra time, which could even be a problem if you need the shutdown/restart to happen asap.
I recently installed GTX670 SLI in my machine and run some benchmarks to test it is all working.Afterwards, I did a clean format complete re-install with Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1 with updates. It appears now when I shut down my machine, windows turns off the display and seems to shut down but does NOT turn off the fans/LEDs on my computer.I then re-installed a clean windows 7, installed my drivers ONLY (no windows updates) and it shuts down/turns the computer off fine.
Every time I shut down, Windows Update installs the same 2 updates. It never gives an error message saying that the install failed. It just insists on doing it again. This is the update from last week, I guess. I'm afraid I'm at work and away from the affected computer. It's not critical, it's just annoying, bc shutdown now takes too long.
Windows Updates continues to re-install five specific updates which are:*Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2 for x64 (KB2604121) -Download size: 38.5 MB.*Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2 for x64 (KB2656368) -Download size: 1.8 MB.*Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2 for x64 (KB2656405) -Download size: 11.7 MB.*Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2 for x64 (KB2686827) -Download size: 4.3 MB.*Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2 for x64 (KB2600217) -Download size: 32.2 MB.- I purchased my computer 4 to 5 months ago. I am part of a large organization that has a large amount of computers on our domain controller. I have Administrative rights to the computers only, and network access rights on our network. I keep a number of computers up to date, including various 3rd-party programs (i.e. java, flash, etc), and I currently manually remotely connect to each computer and install the updates to the programs from a network share, then run Windows update, select all the critical updates (as well as all the applicable optional updates), then disconnect and move on to the next one. Needless to say, time quickly adds up.
For the past day windows wants to install the same 4 updates over and over, I have windows update set to download and let me choose when to install.
I can't understand why I even need them, as I uninstalled net framework. Notice how the update at 8:17 AM., KB2656368, is the same as one of the 4 updates installed at 7:47 PM. Windows wants to install the same four kb files again. How do I stop this?
Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2 for x64 (KB2656368) Installation date: 6/15/2012 7:47 PM Installation status: Successful
I have Windows 7 Home Premium installed on my PC. Every morning when I boot up my computer I get a message " Preparing to configure Windows. Do not turn off computer." and on shut off "Installing Update 1 of 12" This repeats every day so it's obvious the system is not taking the upgrade I did a search but can't find this specific problem.
I made a thread a few days ago about not being able to install a specific update. Now I've discovered I cannot install ANY updates. I've tried disableing my anti-virus, firewall, tried manually dling the update from M$, even tried installing the updates on a newly created admin account, and no luck. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this problem?
My computer downloaded updates for my Laptop. Upon restarting to install the updates it reaches a point and can not install certain updates. All it shows is fatal error.Every time i switch off the laptop and restart it, it re-installs but on reaching that particular point, an error code is created.
I have windows 7, my updates won't install, tried to install maunelly from website, still got errors, reinstalled windows, updates are still not installing.
When I try to install updates on my PC through the automatic updater it downloads the updates fine, but then when I restart it tries to install them for about 5 minutes and stays at 0% the whole time. When I log on all it says is "Windows could not install updates".
I downloaded windows 7 from the MSDN Microsoft alliance thing that my professor signed me up for. Anyway while i was installing i got to the part where it said expanding windows files and gave a % or something. Anyway it got to 65% or so and i left the room and when i came back a minute later my computer was off. At first i thought it was probably restarting because i know that is suppose to happen. However when i waited a few minutes i realized it wasnt coming back on. So i tried to hit the power button to turn it on and i get NOTHING! What the heck happened, everything seemed it was running fine. My processor supports 64 bit and i have more than enough hardware to run it fine. I even did the adviser before hand and my system checked out.
I was installing SP1 on a recently purchased laptop (Acer Aspire 5742) running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Installation was done via Windows Update and was reported successful. On subsequent required reboot, however, the system just hang, at shutdown screen. Some half a day has passed already and I wonder what now, whether I should go for a hard reset and force turning it off, and what would be the proper way to do that, in hope to cause the least damage, both to Windows and the SP install and even the hardware eventually?... I've tried already hitting the power button, even for some more than a couple seconds, but it didn't go off and I admit I became afraid of persisting on that... I've also already read about having to hold the power button for actually some 60 seconds..
I try to install Windows 7 on acer aspire 5536 but when i get windows loading files or when i need to press any key to start up the windows install it just shutdown. Now it has vista installed. What could be the problem? On acer website it says that it's compatible with Windows 7
Im having a really stressful bug, I'm trying to do a clean windows 7 install. What happens is the setup will load and the splash logo with the 4 colour balls that form a windows logo will appear, but shortly after that it will shutdown, going into a "hibernate" mode and if i try to turn it on with power again there is no video input.I've been searching the internet alot for any answer but nothing has worked
I am using a burned windows 7 disc, I have a OEM key that I bought from newegg however the disc is not with me as I am in Canada and I had it shipped to family who gave me the key through e-mail.Also, I was successful in installing XP on the hard drive, but windows 7 only causes a shutdown. It had windows 7 before that I had installed, but it was the enterprise version and it had no product key so I wiped the hard drive once I bought the legitimate key
I just installed a new SSD drive along with two 1TB drives that I put into a RAID 0 configuration. Everything is running great, bootup is fast.
Weird thing is, when I shut my computer down now, windows seems to shutdown, and I hear my Hard drives turnoff, but the fans and leds on the computer keep running for about 2 to 3 minutes before they shut off. Before with my old HDD, it would shutdown windows and the computer would shutdown immediately afterwards.
I'd like it to shutdown immediately again, I sit there waiting for it to turn off as I want to make sure I don't leave the fans running all night.
Just got this new Acer aspire, windows 7 laptop and keep getting same error message when trying to install updates:' Windows update encountered an unknown error. 2 updates failed and were not installed - error codes 643 and 74F'.
I've tried installing certain ones, even some ones at a time, but the results are the same. Download complete. Please restart. But the update never happens and I don't get an error message.
Windows 7 updates have not been installing recently - All the latest set of updates that have been offered attempt to install and then they stop - I attempted to install one at a time but this is no help either
Where to start? Several weeks ago I installed a windows update & then my Bullguard firewall wouldn't start. I got remote assistance from Bullguard & they succesfully restarted my firewall.Since then I have permissions issues, I have tried changing my status from admin to standard but the standard option is greyed out. I have tried setting a new user account but that also will not let me apply any changes without a password which I don't have. Also when I go to All Programs this is empty? My other problem is my windows security updates faill to install ( error 8000ffff) I have looked at different solutions online & used microsoft fix it but all to no avail. I have 19 updates to install but they constantly come back with the same error.
if you install for example a security update for internet explorer 8 before having internet explorer 8 installed (lets say i have 7) could it cause problems?(and after installing the security update of ie8 install ie8)
I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and there are some updates I can't install. It loads to 15% then it says "failure configuring updates, reverting to old setup", or something similar. First I had 8 updates when this started happening but I managed to install the security updates by selecting them exclusively. I have have tried deleting my updates folder and download again but same thing happens. Is there a fix for this? It's annoying when my computer reboots because they can't be installed. These are the updates in question:
Tried installing the updates individually and from the Microsoft Download Center. I also ran Microsoft FixIt, but that didn't help. I have been able to install other windows updates with no problems at all, but I can't download them. I believe that there is still a rootkit on this computer so I think that it may be the source of the problem. I have tried to remove the rootkit in the past, but I am not going to buy a whole new version of windows because of the rootkit.
