Jul 22, 2012Recently I change my Os from windows vista to 7. Because I can't find a way to make the original OS to become genuine.From there, my laptop can't read external hard drive but it can only read flash drives.I don't know what my laptop is missing, if it is updates or drivers.

Jun 5, 2012I have recently had to format my hard drive and re-install windows. I have also had to replace the motherboard, CPU and power supply. I borrowed a 1.5 TB Freecom firewire external hard drive from a friend to back-up important data before the format, but the transfer speed is uselessly slow now that I am attempting to put the data back on the drive.
I have tried:
- updating the drivers for the firewire card
- switching to 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (legacy) in the device manager
- Optimizing the drive for 'better performance' as opposed to 'speedy removal' in the drive's properties.
As things stand at the moment, I am getting about 400 kb/ps transfer speed from the external to my on-board drive. As you can imagine, this is virtually useless to me, considering I have hundreds of gigabytes worth of data to transfer.
Startup Extremely Slow When External Hard Drive Attached?
Nov 21, 2010i just bought an external HD drive and it's very good but ... When I attach my external hard drive start up becomes painfully slow , like at least 5 times slower !. I get past the BIOS load screen fine but once the computer gets to the Starting Windows screen it sits there for a good 30-60 seconds. Then when the screen goes black (as it's going from the "starting windows" screen with the little windows 7 icon to the login screen) it again sits for anywhere from 1-2minutes, if not longer.i have an old external HD and I've been using it for 2 years and never had this problem !another thing when i click on " safely remove the HD " before i reboot and without taking the usb off the computer just stats normally !

Mar 25, 2011I have posted in other forums with no luck.I bought a Samsung SH-D162D DVD Drive in a USB enclosure to connect to my Toshiba laptop via USB.I cannot get windows 7 to find it! When I plug in the USB cable the balloon comes up to say it has been installed (sometimes), I can see it on for about 1 or 2 minutes then it drops off. It isnt listed in my hardware or anything.Its not found in Disk Management or My Devices so it isnt a case of changing the drive letter - i cant find the drive to change it.I have also tried to find the upper and lower settings in regedit....couldnt find them so couldnt delete them as advised in other posts of this nature.It is set to master, the IDE connector and power connectors are fine. Its gotta be a windows 7 problem cause it does show up very breifly. In the minute or 2 its there I cant do anything with it...it just hangs although it will open and close. Ive googled it and cant find anything.Ive also connected it up to another laptop with XP and had no problems so I know the DVD Rom works fine and all the cables are ok.Ive tried in all 4 USB ports on my laptop and also turned off all energy settings...all with no luck. And I also have EVERY windows 7 update.
Heres exactly what happens from power off on the enclosure.
1 - I plug in the USB lead then turn on power to the enclosure.
2 - I quickly go to Start, and I can see the DVD Rom drive E next to my laptops dvd rom.
3 - The green bar at the top starts filling up from left to right and gets about half way then suddenly the DVD Rom icon disappears and so does the green bar.
4 - It then flashes up under the laptops DVD Rom icon with a Local Disk drive E but only for a split second.
5 - Sometimes a balloon comes up saying installing device, then device successfully installed...but not every time.
Bios Does Not Detect External DVD-writer
Nov 13, 2011I use Transcend external DVDwriter Modell TS8X DVDR-K on Dell Inspiron 1520 In Windows, there is no problem and i use it easily, but the bios does not recognize it and i can t boot any cd from it. I am saying that bios does not detect my external hard drive, but only my original dvd- rom.And as i said, windows detects it easily , but not Bios !

Sep 2, 2011I have a strange problem with my Acer Aspire 4738 notebook running Windows 7 Basic Premium 64-bit. In short, when I click Devices and Printers, my brand new Lexar flash drive (windows 7 compatible) seems to be properly connected to its USB port, its driver installed, and everything looks OK. But when I click Computer, the flash drive does not show up.
I have already tried these two options, but neither works.
First option, Computer -> Manage -> Disk Management. When I try to change the letter drive of the flash drive, an error message pops up: �The operation failed to complete because the Disk Management console view is not up-to-date. Refresh the view by using the refresh task. If the problem persists close the Disk Management console, then restart Disk Management or restart the computer." (I have done that but it doesn't help) And when I try to format the flash drive (i thought it might help), another error message pops up: �An unexpected error has occurred. Check the System Event Log for more information on the error."
Second option, Computer -> Manage -> Disk Drives. I uninstalled the flash drive, removed the flash drive physically from the laptop, and plugged it in again in an USB port. My computer detects the flash drive, installs its driver, but then again when I go to Computer, the flash drive doesn�t show up.
Windows 7 Setup Doesn't Detect Hard Drive
Jan 4, 2012So my trusty old 40 GB Maxtor HDD finally died, and I'm trying to install Windows 7 on a 250 GB Western Digital Caviar SE 16 (SATA II). Windows will boot off of the DVD, load the setup, ask me if I want to perform an install or a repair, and then it asks if I want to upgrade or do a "custom" setup. I choose custom since it's a clean drive, but then it shows me a blank list of drives with the option to load a driver. My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-G41M-ES2H, so I went to Gigabyte's website and downloaded the drivers and put them on a USB thumb drive. I spent hours trying to load different drivers to no avail. I tried the CD that came with the motherboard; no dice. I tried 32 and 64 bit installations; neither worked.
But you know what did work? My 180-day trial copy of Windows Server 2003. It detected that hard drive like Western Digital made it just for 2003.

Nov 17, 2011I've had a sudden loss of my hard drive space. I've deleted alot of stuff, like over 20GB, more then just a few times and it just disappeared in less then 2 days. I've read some topics here with the about same problem and tried what they sugested there: to use software like WinDirStat, TreeSize Free and SpaceSniffer. But they just won't show me my whole hard drive. The stop at 50% and show it as if they have scan the whole 100%.

Feb 20, 2012Me and my fiance just finished putting together her first real gaming computer and we wanted to use a Patriot 64g SSD to put win 7 on and use a 1TB Seagate drive for all the rest of the storage. The installation of Win 7 onto the SSD went nice and smooth but when we get into windows it is not detecting the 1TB HD at all. Funny thing is that when I go in to the SSD properties, I can see the Seagate under the sharing options. The only info I have found is how to clone off an existing hard drive with Win 7 on it not how to do a fresh install on 2 new drives.

Aug 10, 2009I just purchased a dv7-1261wm and installed Windows 7. But in Device Manager, it shows 5 drivers that didn't install. There are 4 listed as "Base System Device" and 1 as "Unknown Device". I've installed all the drivers from HP's site, but that didn't help.
The main issue though is the CD/DVD/Blu-Ray Rom drive doesn't detect in any burning programs. It shows as installed fine, but burning programs can't access it.
