Startup Extremely Slow When External Hard Drive Attached?
Nov 21, 2010
i just bought an external HD drive and it's very good but ... When I attach my external hard drive start up becomes painfully slow , like at least 5 times slower !. I get past the BIOS load screen fine but once the computer gets to the Starting Windows screen it sits there for a good 30-60 seconds. Then when the screen goes black (as it's going from the "starting windows" screen with the little windows 7 icon to the login screen) it again sits for anywhere from 1-2minutes, if not longer.i have an old external HD and I've been using it for 2 years and never had this problem !another thing when i click on " safely remove the HD " before i reboot and without taking the usb off the computer just stats normally !

I have recently had to format my hard drive and re-install windows. I have also had to replace the motherboard, CPU and power supply. I borrowed a 1.5 TB Freecom firewire external hard drive from a friend to back-up important data before the format, but the transfer speed is uselessly slow now that I am attempting to put the data back on the drive.
I have tried:
- updating the drivers for the firewire card
- switching to 1394 OHCI Compliant Host Controller (legacy) in the device manager
- Optimizing the drive for 'better performance' as opposed to 'speedy removal' in the drive's properties.
As things stand at the moment, I am getting about 400 kb/ps transfer speed from the external to my on-board drive. As you can imagine, this is virtually useless to me, considering I have hundreds of gigabytes worth of data to transfer.

This just recently started happening and I cant figure out why. Each time I restart or turn my computer on it takes like 10-15 minutes before I can even do anything. Some programs like Spotify, Skype and even my Task Manager arent showing any letters, I dont know if it was because I tried opening them too early upon restart or not but this whole situation is annoying. I'll provide pictures as an example of whats going on with the letters. Just now I clicked on skype and got an error that said "Out of system resources" I closed it and nothing happened but what is going on...

Should be a relatively fast machine takes forever to start-up / load apps. For example, 9:10 from power on to loading Outlook. I've tried everything I could think of -- CCleaner, alwarebytes, disk cleanup / optimization, sfc / scannow, pruning down any startup items, power set to max performance, triple-checking all drivers are up to date, etc. Once the system is "warmed up" and I'm using it constantly, everything is fine -- quick, responsive, etc. If I leave for 10 min or more and come back, even though nothing has been set to power down / go to sleep, programs (already open) don't respond, etc., until the system "warms up" again. On startup / initial launches, and when coming back to the computer, CPU usage never gets very high (watching the CPU Usage gadget or Task Manager). My wife's computer, a slightly slower Dell bought at the same time and configured the same way, doesn't have any of these problems. (Mine is a Studio XPS 7100 Phenom II X4 820, 12G)

We just bought a WD 2TB My Book Elite external hard drive. When we boot the computer into Windows 7 and plug in the USB cable, the drive is recognized and assigned a drive letter. Everything looks normal--we can access the drive, read files on it, copy files to it, etc. However, next time we power up the computer, if this drive is attached, the computer won't boot. The Dell BIOS splash screen comes up and sits there for a while, then the screen goes black--and absolutely nothing else happens. If we then disconnect the drive and start the computer again, it boots normally. The external drive has the latest firmware and software installed, and we have the most current BIOS installed.

for some unknown reason my Floppy drive runs very, very slow on 64bit Windows 7. Takes about a minute to open an office XL file, and longer to close it... a lot longer. Even after the file is closed, the floppy light is still on an clicking, like it's reading the disc still. The drive itself is OK. I've got XP Pro on the same PC and the floppy is like lightning on XP. Also tried updating drivers, but it says it's got the best drivers available, and that it's working OK. So what the heck is it?

Me and my brother built me a new computer from scratch (he did the building - i did the watching). I purchased an internal hard drive from Overclockers UK. It's a Samsung 1TB drive. I also have a 64 Solid-state drive in there as my primary hard drive that Windows was installed on and a couple of programs are installed on. My storage disk (the 1TB disk) is for all my music/films etc. Whenever I drag and drop a file into the Samsung hard-drive - it copies it rather than moves it instantly. When I had a laptop, I had 3 external hard drives and this is the way it copied files onto them.how I can get the internal drive to stop acting like an external drive?

I have a USB external hard drive that I keep all my documents etc on (had it for years)I upgraded from Vista Home to & Home Premium then had to upgrade recently to Professional to run my Sage. Through all these upgrades my ext. drive ran fine. Occasionally the drvie letter would change if I had something else plugged into the USB, this was always easily corected in disk management by changing the drive path. The connection on the case packed up so I had to get the drive put into a new case, now when I plug it in the drive is assigned G instead of F, I tried to change the drive letter allocation in Disk Management but it won't let me as the program still thinks I have a second ext. hard drive which is labelled F. I suspect this has happened because when the usb connection broke the drive was disconnected suddenly instead of a proper eject. How do I get Disk Management to remove the inactive drive - i can't find any obvious way - eject, delete etc are all missing when I click on tools or tasks.

My computer has just slowed down to a crawl. It happened when I got home from being out of town for a few days, before I left, my computer was just fine, my computer has an AMD Athlon II 2.80 GHz, 4 CPU cores. 4 GB of RAM, ATI Radeon graphics card etc. What it is doing is, it goes through the BIOS just like it's always been, then, when it is about to start windows, it just goes to a black screen for about 30 seconds, then "Starting Windows" comes up for like 5 minutes without anything there, then after a while, the windows logo comes on top of the "Starting WIndows" and it just hangs. I also have an Ubuntu OS installed on a separate Hard drive on the computer if that helps diagnose the problem,I also tried starting Ubuntu also, same thing, slow as hell. It is a custom made computer made by me about a year and a half ago, never had any problems until just now. As I am typing this now my computer is still hanging at the "Start Windows" screen for roughly about 20 minutes.

my computer has been extremely slow. I tried uninstalling programs, rebooting, updating, shutting down processes and basically a lot of stuff. I think thee first time it started being slow was after a windows error recovery. Since then I have had about 3 more error recoveries, and from what I can remember it showed a black screen stating that "the system has been shut down to prevent damage" or something like that. Another thing I can remember was it saying something like "pool error".I'm usually patient with my computer and just wait for it to load, even though the computer shouldn't take this long to do anything considering that it's a pretty good computer and still not very old. But now I can't take it anymore! It's unbelievably slow and I am VERY lucky just to be able to use the internet and type this post right now.I originally thought there was a problem with my browser (Google Chrome) so I tried using rockmelt instead because I liked the chrome interface. Rockmelt actually worked better than Chrome for a while but then started being almost as slow, plus, changing browsers isn't gonna fix all the programs, they were just as slow too.

I have an Eee PC that came with Windows 7 Starter. I installed Windows 7 Ultimate because I hated the restrictions with Starter. Everything went just fine. Now it is so slow when I get on the internet that it times out. I don't even bother playing games on my favorite sites. It is just no fun anymore. I am more of a hardware person than software and I am lost. I don't even know where to start. I am on wireless and don't know what settings should be. I'm sure it's probably something really simple and I'm going to feel like an idiot but at this point I'll look the fool if I can fix this.

For the last year or so my USB ports have been running really slowly.I'm almost positive they are supposed to be USB 2.0 but I can never get speeds of more than 4mbps. This happens when I'm transferring one 4gb file, or a folder of mp3s. It happens when using a flash drive, using an external hard drive, using an SD card (or microSD) with adapter, or when plugged directly into MP3 player or Android Tablet. So I guess I have a few questions: How do I check to make sure my ports are USB 2.0 and have the correct drivers? Am I overreacting to normal speeds or is 4mbps as slow as I think it is and if it really is slow does anybody have any suggestions for solving the problem?

Since installing Windows 7 all of my USB ports are ridiculously slow, USB 1.0 speeds at best.
I did not have this problem at all with XP, so it is not hardware related.
It is affecting a variety of devices, so no single one is to blame.
I guess on the plus side, my iPhone can almost get a full charge in the ~hour it takes to sync.

My motherboard is Intel DG965RY, I have 2 sticks 2GB DDR2, my GPU is EVGA GeForce GTX 560 2GB GDDR5 Memory, my hard-drive is a Seagate Barracuda w/ 2TB capacity and a 64MB cache. My CPU is Intel Core 2 Dou E4400 2.0GHz. The diskdrive, graphic card, Operating system, and RAM were all upgrades, including the power supply, which is a Dynex DX-520WPS.Everything else I had for about five years. The motherboard and CPU are next to replace, pending money.Buy I also have my old diskderive connected, with my old OS still on it. Because my Win7 x64 OS runs like 10x slower than my old Window XP 32 bit I continue to use it until all my critical programs are installed, and my new Windows 7 run better than it is now. After I installed Windows 7, it started out running slower than a turtle. It does EVERYTHING slow! I tried shutting down background processes but I don't know which to close. I ended up losing my internet and sound so I restarted most of the processes. I wand to add 4GB more of RAM but if my old XP can run smooth with only 2GB then it's probably not a RAM issue. What can I do to make the thing run "normal?"

I just got an external hard drive yesterday, and have been asking a few questions on this forum. So far, people have managed to be very helpful with the previous questions, hopefully someone can do so here too.Reinstalling all my games to external hard drive, need to know if they will / how to make them appear / function properly in my GEF, whether added automatically or manually.I am basically going to have EVERYTHING put onto my 1TB external, and by everything I mean "Music, Pictures, Videos, Documents, Games, and maybe Programs". So, I made a folder for each of those things on it,and only now that I am reinstalling my games into the Programs one have I realized something.I am a bit obsessive about having a fully functioning Game Explorer Folder (GEF) with all my games visible in it. It's my assumption that when I install into an external hard drive, none of those games will be automatically added into the GEF. However, if I add them in manually (using the regedit method in the tutorial), should everything function properly, so long as I have my external hard drive on whenever I use the computer?I just need this to be confirmed before I start reinstalling more. Also, if not, please let me know if there IS a way to get them to show up in my GEF properly, or possibly move the GEF to the external hard drive or get it to recognize things from a different directory.
