I had a Vista computer that crashed. It wouldn't start up. Figured I would try to install Windows 7 on top of the Vista installation. I read that a custom installation would save the old contents in and Windows.old folder, including the user profiles. However, after custom installation the windows.old folder is there, but my Vista profile is gone. Probably because it was password protected. I figured I would be able to find it and elevate my privelegies in Win 7, but seems not. It still seems the harddrive is full of my old information(alot of GB's are used). Is there any way to recover the information? I know the old password and all that, just can't find the information. (Also tried to search for exact file and folder names but they cannot be found).
View 2 Replies View RelatedAs an alternative to re-installing all my programmes etc. I have recently considered installing Windows 7.0 on one of my three harddrives. I understand that this is perfectly feasible, however, my main aim is to be able to address more ram, hence W 7.0 64 bit. Would Vista 32 still run happily with 8GB or more of memory in the mobo? The hd is 500 Gig.

Result each time is the Windows coloured flag coming together then "Setup is starting services". Everything fine except lazy greedy Canon do not produce drivers for my existing scanner for 64 bit, only 32 bit. I have wasted a lot of time trying other drivers, work arounds and expensive memory hogging simulation programs. Howvere, I saw a case I can put my old HD into in a shop the other day. What I am wondering now is if it is possible to do this, plug in it and then boot my old system on those occasions I need to use my scanner?

View 9 Replies View RelatedCurrently I have Vista 32 bit installed on my pc with the RC version of 7 installed on a 20gb partition. I recently bought the 64 bit version of 7 and am looking for a way to install it.
I want to keep Vista on my computer just in case a program or something isn't compatible with 7.
I was thinking that i would format the partition I currently have and move vista to that partition and then install 7 on the main partition.
Would this be the correct way to go about dual booting between a 32 and 64 bit operating system?
I installed vista on my harddrive, and then made a partition and installed windows 7 on it.
I no longer want vista, and just want windows 7.
How would I go about deleting vista all together, and just have windows 7?
If I make the windows 7 partition active, it won't boot.
I have another laptop and its a HP 2230s. I originally installed Windows 7 professional 64bit. But I have swapped the ram into my Lenovo ThinkPad. So the HP now has 2GB. I created a new partition and installed Vista Business 32bit on it. When I started the install windows .exe program in Windows 7, everything went well until it rebooted. When I rebooted, windows said something like:
Windows Boot manager:
The system cannot boot because of a recent change to files/hardware. (Something like that). Insert your windows disk.
So I just rebooted my laptop with the vista disk inside and installed. After, when everything was working, I wanted to go to the Windows 7 partition to un-install programs and copy some files over to the vista partition, the laptop just booted into vista.
I downloaded the easy BCD editior and visual BCD editor. (in the vista partition), I clicked the auto fix in visual BCD editor. It detected my windows installations. At the boot screen, I can select either Windows 7 or Vista. But when I select 7, the same error message appears.
Then I rebooted my laptop with a USB containing the Windows 7 (64bit) recovery tools. After, I don't have the message again. But when it goes to the starting windows animation, it stops halfway and it gets a BSOD. I tried debugging mode, it worked.
I found out that the larger partition, (Windows 7) is the C: drive. But when I boot into the smaller partition, (Windows Vista), the drive is also C:!. So I don't know what I could do.
I insert the windows 7 disk and repaired my installation, it just boots into windows 7. But when I insert the Vista disk and repaired my installation, it just boots into Vista!
I posted here earlier (a couple weeks ago) about a painless installation of Windows 7 on a resized C Drive, which I partitioned into into a C Drive (Vista) and W Drive (Win 7).
All was fine until yesterday - I had been able to login into and out of both operating systems without drama - when out of the blue, for no apparent reason, whenever I try and log onto the Vista operating system, it allows me to logon as Rod with my correct password, but after the logon screen I get the "Preparing your Desktop" and and am presented with a Desktop and icons - but not for me! I get a bubble pop up out of the System Tray that says "Windows had trouble loading your Profile and has loaded up a temporary profile. Contact your administrator".
That would be me! I for the life of me don't know what happened. I have created no new users, nor amended any existing ones. Though, when using Windows 7 earlier in the day, I had to give access rights and permissions to All authenticated Users in order to access and use files on a separate (D) Drive.
Will this have screwed up my User Profile and login to Vista? How?
During the day I clicked on a link saying I needed to check for updates or restart my computer. Don't remember exactly which program it was or in what order.
However, now when my computer starts up my desktop has reverted to some default desktop which is misssing a lot of my icons I had previously. Some of my shortcuts are still there, but most are missing.
until recently I had a ubuntu/Windows 7 dual boot. i got a laptop with ubuntu so i decided to remove it from my pc. after that i had tremendous problems as grub decided to delete my partition table. anyway i got that fixed.so i have 3 hdd's in my pc. 1x 500gb sata, 1x 500gb ide & 1x 1tb sata. i did a fresh install after my boot problem, everything was fine again until today. i installed windows on drive c: on my 500gb sata hdd. the 1tb sata is for data, the ide will be used as a network hdd.so as i turned on my pc today, it didnt boot and just showed a prompt. so i booted from another drive. to my surprise i got a grub command line despite me uninstalling it and doing a fresh install.anyway i booted into the recovery dvd, did startup repair without sucess. so i looked around cmd to find that now my windows partition got assigned the drive letter.i dont know if i recall correctly but i think my teacher said that Windows 7 can only boot from c:. so i think that this is basically my problem.how do i get drive d: to show up as c: again? please npte that i CANNOT boot into windows

This also happened with every file, PowerPoint icons on the bottom of thumbnails changing to Windows Defender icons.I have had an outdated Sophos running on it since I got it as well ad Windows Defender, then 2 years later I bought a Norton disc and that's up-to-date right now. None of the antivirus programs have detected anything.Could you guys please tell me if there is any viruses that do anything like what I am experiencing, because I feel uncomfortable knowing that there might be a virus on my computer.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI seem to have messed up my drives big time.
I had Windows XP installed on C:
Partitioned that drive, installed Windows 7 Beta on D:
Bought a second hard drive
Partitioned it to to drives, E and F
I just bought the Windows 7 Pro Upgrade, made a fresh install on E: with the hopes that it would change E: to C: like the beta did on my primary drive.
It didn't, now my drive lettering looks awful and it's confusing me lol.
I don't need the Windows XP or the Windows 7 Beta installation (on disk0), I would like to combine those partitions back into 1 drive.
Is there any way I can fix this mess? maybe make my current windows location C: ?
