I have tried to log into my Dell Inspiron laptop this morning and get the message as detailed above. It gives me 2 options launch startup repair or run windows normally neither do anything. I've tried running in safe mode and it takes me back to the same screen.I have the original OS disks from Dell etc if I need to reinstall, but just don't know how since I can't get past the same screen.
View 2 RepliesI have Windows Ultimate (x64).I use the Asus Suite II supplied with my Asus Asus P8Z68-V Pro Gen3 Motherboard (which I like for fan and temperature monitoring) Ai Suite II always loads BUT "on screen" it is messy during loading because a seemingly AI Suite bar sized white artefact appears top left of screen for 10- 20 seconds before disappearing when the AI suite icon appears in the notification tray. Sometimes a white square also appears temporarily.I have noted that if I exit Ai Suite II and reload via the Asus AI suite supplied Shortcut I never get these artefacts AND the suite loads instantaneously (I note however Asus uses AI Suite II.exe via the shortcut but via the Asus installed Task Schedule it open via "AsRoutineController.exe -open"I have also tried unloading AI Suite II and AsRoutineController.exe and loading AsRoutineController.exe and it too loads cleanly and almost instantaneously.
1) Why does Asus use the Task scheduler instead of loading via the normal Windows Startup procedures?
2) Could it be so each can be easily disabled if required) and is that the ONLY reason?
3) what is the -open switch in the command line?
4) Is there ANY good reason why I should not disable the AI Suite II in the Task Scheduler and add it the the Normal Windows Startup applications I use the Free version of Startup Delayer as it has served me wonderfully with my current Win 7 O/S (and my previous XP) in ensuring all desired Notification Tray Icons display EVERY time).
Today I PROVISIONALLY made the change and AI Suite II opens cleanly (as other Startup apps) without temporary white artefacts and with no noted side effects so far. I am nervous however, to make it permanent without advice from knowledgeable Seven Forums members on this subject
I have a 64 bit OS and I recently upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. In the sound menu of Win 7 you have a choice "Play Windows Start up Sound", check box. If unchecked no Start up Sound. I would rather have my own sound and when I searched the web I found a program which opens up the "dll" file to change the sound, "ResHack". When I tested the sound I wanted to use it played but on rebooting my computer it went back to the Windows 7 default sound. Microsoft really bugs.

My motherboard died on me, and so I had to change it together with the processor and RAM as there were no socket 775 motherboards available locally. However, Win 7 blue screens every time on start up, but very briefly, so I can't see the error message.
Win 7 repair then kicks in, but finds nothing wrong, so it goes round and round like that ad infinitum.
All the repair methods I have found require that you work within windows, which is patently stupid if you want to repair because you can't get windows to work - it's a bit like trying to open a box with a tool that's inside it!
I tried a new install, which has backed up my old Windows as Windows.old, and it goes though all the paces, but then refuses to accept the activation code.
I am now stuck with a non functioning PC, and am scared to add anything in the future in case of this type of thing.
So is there a way that I can change the color of the blue orb? also can I change the glow color too?

I have a toshiba satellite laptop and had to replace the hard drive. I am trying to reload Windows 7 from a USB. I went into the settings and changed it to boot from USB but the computer is not recognizing it. It gives me a black screen that says "Check cable connection! PXE-MOF: Exiting Intel PXE ROM. No bootable device--insert boot disk and press any key" I also have tried using a Windows 7 upgrade cd that says it contains the full version but got the same message.

I am currently using a different computer to ask for help, Everytime I startup my computer it says "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. If I press enter on either of those it says "windows is loading files" It does that twice with a white bar then returns me to the same screen with the same 2 options. It has the Main, Advanced, Security, Boot, Exit options with computer specs, product information so on so forth. I have absolutely no idea what any of these do, so I usually exit and again the process repeats, I go back to the 2 options, they either bring me to that Aptio Setup page, or back to the same page. It's frustrating that I cant use system recovery since it goes to the same page and Startup repair wont work, I have absolutely no idea what to do and am in need of serious help. This problem occured when a windows thing popped up saying "A virus may be on your computer" generally I clicked it, my computer shut down automatically and thats what started this whole repetetive process.

A few weeks ago, I shut down my PC completely for a regular cleaning. I do a regular cleaning once a month, this was the first time I had an issue.
After I finished, I powered up the machine, and Windows would continually fail to start - rebooting at some point while the Logo load screen was up.
After several Google searches, I tried pretty much everything I could think of or advice i came across - Nothing worked. I could not boot from the Win7 Disk, System Repair did not work, advanced boot options did not work, etc. At this point I thought the HDD might be bad (WD Caviar Black 1 TB).
So I went and purchased a new HDD, the same model actually as it was on sale. Windows installed fine, everything got up and running with no issue.
I then took my HDD which I had believed had failed and plugged it into a Thermaltake BlacX Docking station and I was able to locate the drive in the device manager after scanning for new hardware.
I actually was able to go into the hard drive and recover the few bits of data I hadn't backed up (mostly gaming files). The HDD was completely fine. Fast forward a few weeks, and feel free to laugh at me here - I'm in the exact same situation with the new HDD once again after cleaning my PC case.
So, I'm not sure what is happening. I've rebooted the PC many times without issue but today was the first time that I fully powered down the PC to do a cleaning.
I suspect something is causing Windows to fail to recognize the HDD itself, but honestly this is way beyond my knowledge how to fix. I took a risk and I removed the sata cable from the "GSata" slot on the motherboard and put it into one of the standard ICHR10 - to no effect.
I've once again exhausted every option I actually know how to safely do, advanced boot options, repair attempt from Win7 Disk, etc. Nothing is working. I'm debating running out yet again and grabbing a cheap HDD just to get myself up and running again, but I thought I'd turn to Tom's Hardware first for some ideas - and because I don't want to be going through this issue everytime I want to give the PC case a good cleaning.
i just cloned the OS hard drive in my computer from an 80GB to 160GB (both IDE) using acronis true image enterprise edition.
the clone process completed fine, but when i try to start the computer with the new hard drive plugged in (power and data cables disconnected from the old drive) i get the 'disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter' message when the OS is supposed to startup.
i booted to the windows 7 OS disc and chose the repair option which detected that there was a startup issue with the disk and apparently fixed it, but when i restarted the computer i still get the same error message. i also used the startup repair option from the windows OS disc but it didn't detect any issues.
the interesting thing is that i can boot the new hard drive while the OS disc is in the DVD drive, but if i take it out i get the message again. i've also tried changing the jumper settings on the hard drive (master/single to cable select) but that didn't make a difference.
How do I wipe out the hard drive and start over in Windows 7?

I have a USB monitor hooked to the system and it does not turn on until Windows loads. but if I hard reset by accident or some other reason I can't see the screen that asks what you want to do, this only can be seen when vga/dvi is connected. I know there is a timer for the start normally, but wanted to know if there was a way to make windows not even have to ask and just know to start normally?

I can reinstall Windows but would like to know if the whole event damaged my hard drive. I can only start up to where the orbs make the Windows logo before it restarts. Also there is no noise, smoke or smell coming from my hard drive. Is it possible that it is damaged beyond use and repair? I bought an HP Pavilion floor demonstration computer from a general retailer. The salesman assured me that all previous user accounts and information had been removed and the computer restored to its factory configuration before I took delivery. However, when I boot it up from a cold (power off) start, I get an error saying that the password entered for user Kiosk is invalid. Kiosk is apparently the name of the default start up user account. My workaround is simply to switch users to the administrator account. The Kiosk account does not appear in the list of user accounts in the 'add or remove user accounts' tab in the control panel. The Kiosk file folder in the Users folder is empty. How can I change the default start up user account? The store did not create a password reset disk.

Sometimes when I leave my computer open for video editing, etc., when I open it, I see that it has restarted, and waiting with flashing _ on the black screen. When I check the BIOS, I see that the hard disk device order has changed from Disk2 to Disk1. How could this happen and why? Is there any way for me to learn why the computer has restarted itself?
