I have a computer with windows 7 ultimate.There are some shared folders and printers on this machine. This setup looks to work fine but suddenly the sharing stops. If i reboot the pc, it works again. The pc never goes in some kind of sleep modus.

View 5 Replies View RelatedOkay so I recently replaced my desktop and it has win7 and my old PC which I want to use as a backup for files and the many programs I just don't use much and cannot be bothered installing on the new machine. I have had a bitch of a time getting so that I can read files on the Win 7 from XP. No problem going the other way.
Here is what I had to do after following the instructions found in the sticky [General Discussion] Windows 7 Tips and the section from From mrface As after following all instructions I was still unable to access the files from XP what I did was go to My Data section drive partition and right clicked each folder (only 3 so not that big a deal) clicked on share with then "specific people" and then added everyone from the drop down box then gave read read/write permission and clicked share.
This seems to work but I wonder if there is not an easier way of creating this share for everyone in all folders. Not so bad with a few but a nuisance if lots and need to add new folders in future having to remember to do this.
So i just took the hard disk from my old computer and put it in my current one.I installed ubuntu 11.10 just before the transfer of the hard disk.Now i can boot into both of them (dual boot). So i`m asking is there any way that i can boot into windows and see all my files on both hard discs and later boot into ubuntu and see and see all my files also?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to share folders on my deskop with my laptop, but I need something that will allow me to edit photos in lightroom on my laptop that are stored on my desktop via Lightroom. Thought that maybe windows 7 "homegroup" feature might allow me to do this, but when I try and setup a homegroup on my desktop it says "Cannot create a homegroup on this computer"Accessing my desktop via logmein.com, to try and set this up. My desktop is currently several miles away, and I need to access those files. I read something about deleting a file in /peernetworking/idstore.sst - Deleted it and rebooted, still get the same error.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy Windows 7 64-bit install keeps "forgetting" to sort folders by name (or by anything for that matter). When I right click and select "Sort by..." in an affected folder there is no bullet indicating that ANY sorting behavior is selected. I can manually reselect "Sort by name" but the trigger is so common that this doesn't stick for long. This drives me nuts having become accustomed to organizing things alphabetically. Anyway the trigger for all this is very puzzling. If I drag a file from one folder to another so that it drops in between two other files (i.e. when that little dividing bar shows up to show you where the file will drop), that folder loses its sorting. If I cut and paste the file with the keyboard this doesn't happen, it's only when I move the file with my mouse. I should mention that this is also when using icons rather than a list.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI've recently built a new system from scratch, I can verify all the connectors are plugged in correctly and powered. Today I went out and bought a small internal 24x dvd drive to install my copy of windows 7 home premium OEM with and this is where my problems began. Whenever I set the dvd drive as the first boot option and put the OEM disc inside it, the screen stays black and does a Windows is Loading files bar across my screen I believe twice at varying speeds then disappears and leaves me with nothing but a black screen. I've waited and have it still sitting there blank at this very moment. I have done a lot of googling and only seen one other person with this same issue have his problem solved by resetting his BIOS to default. Needless to say this didn't work. I've tried changing all the storage settings from AHCI to IDE to RAID and disabling/enabling some setting in each with no luck. Below are the system specs.
Motherboard: ASrock gen3 extreme3 Z68 chipset
CPU: i5 2500k 3.30Ghz
GPU: AMD Radeon 6950 came factory set to 870 Mhz core clock (overclocked from 800)
RAM: 4x4 GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 Mhz (I've also checked to make sure the proper voltage and frequency was used on these in the BIOS)
SSD: OCZ Agility 3 120GB
PSU: Coolermaster 1000W
Optical Drive: 24x Multiformat DVD/CD Writer with the obvious Sata connections to hook up to my mobo
This is my first pc build and I assume that asrock mobo's version of BIOS is UEFI.
Edit : I've tried removing 3 of my RAM sticks and now it just freezes with the grey bar fully loaded on Windows is Loading files. I then tried loading my old windows XP CD and it was working until it hit a BSOD which occurs consistently if I try to load XP. On more attempts at loading windows 7 it gets past the grey bar stage to the black screen not loading anything stage again.
Before a week i upgrade my hdd from 300Gb to a newer at 500Gb and i add a 4 GB RAM , now totally i have 6GB Ram I install Windows 7 Ultimate x64bit I install all drivers properly but i have a problem , when i download files after some minutes the internet connection stop , windows responds slowly , and when i press the restart button from windows start menu takes much time to logout from logon page

View 4 Replies View RelatedI currently own a PC and a laptop. I have an external HD on my PC and I'm trying to be able to access those files through my laptop via XBMC. I've followed many tutorials online to no avail. I don't know much about networking or file sharing so there's my first downfall. I've tried setting up a home group on my main PC but the join home group option is grayed out on the laptop.
PC is windows 7 Professional x64
Laptop is Windows 8 x64
I have 2 Laptops running under XP and 2 Laptops running under Win 7, I run the XP under workgroup with Mshome name and these 2 laptops can access files from each other, similar under Homegroup, the Win 7 laptops can see each other.
The XP laptops CANNOT see the laptops under win 7, and vice versa. I read the How-to Geek article a few times , I tried to change the name MShome under XP to Workgroup, even then the win 7 and xp cannot see each other. Even worse the XP laptops cannot access each other.
Any suggestions.
I have a brand new Windows 7 professional x64 system. I have just today established a wireless network between that computer and my old XP computer. The Windows 7 box has a wireless antenna and the XP box has a hardwired broadband modem that is capable of wireless. It all works fine. I can access the Internet from my wireless box through the broadband modem.
But now what I want to do is share files and perhaps even printers between the two computers. Can someone give me a step-by-step to get the two systems to see each other or point me to a previous thread or link.
I have a 128GB SSD for booting and games and a 1tb hard drive for storage. Because my OS is on my boot drive, the location for my videos folder is on the boot drive and I don't want to store my movies on my boot drive because of space constraints. I'm using homegroup to stream movies to my mother's computer. Is there any way I can stream videos from a folder in my storage drive or any alternative method for changing the root destination of the videos folder in my C drive?

On Firefox and Chrome the download just stops on Opera the speed changes to unknown and it stops downloading.I don't have a wireless connection I use modem and my net connection should be okay since on my old comp with same net it worked without problem.

View 1 Replies View RelatedHaving difficulty with a homegroup and file sharing: one desktop PC with the family's main documents (which are on a separate drive to the system) and two laptops which need to access those documents. I've got them all seeing each other, and they can see the folders in the drive, but when I try to add files or rename files, it tells me that I need permission. I've gone through the advance settings to make sure the correct permission is selected, they all have the same workgroup name and different computer names. Sharing the printer attached to the desktop is fine.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running Outlook 2010 with about 5 separate POP 3 accounts. I archive regularly and compact after archiving. After a lot of trouble cloning a new C drive to an SSD, Outlook, along with a lot of other software, began acting strangely. Everything has pretty much been resolved except for the Outlook problem.
For no reason I can isolate, Outlook will suddenly close, giving the message that it had to close and it will now try to retrieve my data. It does so, unless I was in the middle of composing an email - that will be gone! Sometimes, instead of closing, it freezes and says application not responding.
I checked the disk for errors using scan now and it's fine. I've run memtest and it's fine. I've run in safe mode and it just shut down with no comments. In working my way through suggestions on this board, I just ran Sysinternals Process Explorer until the error occurred and went back to normal. In looking at Process Explorer, I'm afraid the actual data is overwhelming to me. However, I'll attach everything I have.

I'm quite frustrated after trying to share files between my Windows 8 PC and Windows 7 Laptop. Sharing files between Windows 7 PC and laptop was flawless.
I tried creating a homegroup in Windows 7, joined it from Windows 8, when I tried to open shared files, it gave permission error. I've disabled password protection on both PC. Tried adding HomeGroupUsers$ in Advanced persmissions of folder sharing, still the same.
Tried other way round too i.e created a homegroup in Windows 8 and joined it from Windows 7. Still the same issue of permission.
I have read that one should not defragment a SSD Drive. If this is true then... My OS is windows 7 64bt. I am have 2 256GB SSDs running in raid 1 as my 'C' drive and 2-2TB hard drives are 'D' & 'E'. My system tells me that windows is handling the defragmentation of my drives. What I would like to know is if there is a way to stop the system from defragmenting my SSD 'C' drives, but let the OS defragment my D and E hard drives. Also is there a way to control which drives the system is defragmenting?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have been running windows 7 for about a year and it has been running fine up until a few days ago when all programmes seem to jam up and my only option is to turn the power off to reset it, I can open excel and word but can't print,email or send anything to disc, I can't even open photoshop, I have bulldog for antivirus but it won't do a scan, I have tried to Restore to an earlier date about a week ago but it isn't able to complete the task, if I try to start in safe mode, it gets as far as a pnp file then jams up.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI built a computer, and I am using a Core™ i5-3570K Processor w/ Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H Motherboard, and I am using the stock CPU Fan (that comes with the Processor), I noticed that the CPU Fan only spins when the computer is booting, then stops spinning when it has finished booting (when windows has fully loaded). When I go into my BIOS Settings, the CPU Fan still spins. But when it boots Windows, it suddenly stops. I have tried unplugging my CPU Fan from the motherboard and plugging it in again, but that doesn't seem to fix it. It is in the correct socket.
