Sharing Folders And Files Windows 7?
Dec 25, 2011
I am trying to share folders on my deskop with my laptop, but I need something that will allow me to edit photos in lightroom on my laptop that are stored on my desktop via Lightroom. Thought that maybe windows 7 "homegroup" feature might allow me to do this, but when I try and setup a homegroup on my desktop it says "Cannot create a homegroup on this computer"Accessing my desktop via logmein.com, to try and set this up. My desktop is currently several miles away, and I need to access those files. I read something about deleting a file in /peernetworking/idstore.sst - Deleted it and rebooted, still get the same error.

I have 3 computers. Computer A is a desktop runing Windows 7 Professional. Computer B is a desktop running Windows 7 Home Premium. Computer C is a laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium. FIOS is connected to Computer A. A Network of all 3 computers and a Homegroup have been set up from Computer A.We use Office 2010, mostly Word 2010 for our word processing tasks.I realize that with a Homegroup, you can create a Word 2010 document on Computer A, save it to the default location (Libraries/Documents), then open that document on Computer B, make changes to it, save it to the default location, and then open that same document on Computer A, which will show the saved changes made on Computer B.I would like to know if a Word 2010 document can be created on Computer A, then be saved to a specific folder - not a default saving location - on Computer B, so that the user on Computer B can modify the document, save it to a specific folder - not the default saving location - so that the user on Computer A can open the document from its specific folder and view the saved changes.Would this involve advanced sharing, or permissions, or some type of change on the network?

I found it somewhat difficult to completely Unshare files and folders on my HomeGroup Network and still allow Printer sharing in Windows 7 (Home Premium).
Initial UnSharing still allowed files like those below to be viewed on other home network computers:
C:/Users/
{user x} (folder)
AppData (folder)
Default (folder
Public (folder)
desktop.ini (file)
Other computers on the home network could step through many levels of hiarchy in the AppData folder and appeared to have "Delete" access!!
To completely decouple the computers, I had to go through the following several different Sharing/Unsharing assignment locations, till I could completely break the linkage.
I would appreciate any clarifications or simplifications.
File UnShare Confusion on HomeGroup Network
There are several different Network Sharing/Protection assignment locations in Windows 7.
To prevent all sharing between computers on the Homegroup Network, but allow Printer Sharing:
1) Start->Control Panel ->Network and Sharing Center->Choose Homegroup and sharing options.
Uncheck sharing boxes that you don’t want to share. Save changes.
2) Start->Control Panel ->Network and Sharing Center->Choose Homegroup and sharing options->Change advanced sharing settings.
Click “Turn off Public folder sharing (people logged on to this computer can still access these folders)”.
3) Start->Control Panel ->Network and Sharing Center->Choose Homegroup and sharing options->Change advanced sharing settings.
Choose Media streaming options.
Click “Block All” button. Turn off. Click OK.
Anomaly Note: You have to close Control Panel and repeat all step 3 again for the change to take effect.
4) Open Windows Explorer.
a) Select “C:/”, select “Users” folder with single click, then click “Share with” in toolbar.
b) Select Advanced sharing.
Under Sharing tab, select Advanced Sharing. Uncheck box labeled “Share this folder”. Apply and close.
5) Open Windows Explorer.
Select “C:/Users/”, select all folders and files under "Users", then click “Share with” in toolbar, then click “Nobody”.
6) Verify success by going to other home network computer(s) and trying to access your files and folders. You should only be able to see there is a computer and not be able to see any folders of files.

I have main PC [office_PC]. On that PC is basically everything. music, pics, videos etc. It is the primary computer but I also have a laptop and a tablet that access that data too. I need/want full access to everything on the office-PC read/write. no problem easily done and I have had no issues currently until today. (64 bit win 7 system)
My daughter saved up and purchased a netbook [Morgan-Netbook] (OS:win 7 starter). I got her on the network and when connected it asked about homegroup so I said yes and now I see her and she sees me. BUT she has full read/write access to everything on the PC. I can access everything I would expect via the homegroup but then under the "network" icon I can see all my shared folders and she has way more access.
I would like her to have read access to pics, videos and specific folders but not necessarily everything else. I have tried adding her as a user in the sharing permissions but my Office PC only wants to see Location as "office-PC" so I cannot choose her from a list to restrict her access specifically. If I limit the access globally then I lose it for me as well. How do I limit access to just her so that she can see the folders we want but she only has READ access?

I have windows 7 pro on two computers, how do I access complete network drives without sharing individual folders and and using passwords, I hate using passwords, and I don't have anything on my computers worth protecting, I wish windows 7 would just let me turn off all that security crap. I never had a problem with XP.

Okay so I recently replaced my desktop and it has win7 and my old PC which I want to use as a backup for files and the many programs I just don't use much and cannot be bothered installing on the new machine. I have had a bitch of a time getting so that I can read files on the Win 7 from XP. No problem going the other way.
Here is what I had to do after following the instructions found in the sticky [General Discussion] Windows 7 Tips and the section from From mrface As after following all instructions I was still unable to access the files from XP what I did was go to My Data section drive partition and right clicked each folder (only 3 so not that big a deal) clicked on share with then "specific people" and then added everyone from the drop down box then gave read read/write permission and clicked share.
This seems to work but I wonder if there is not an easier way of creating this share for everyone in all folders. Not so bad with a few but a nuisance if lots and need to add new folders in future having to remember to do this.

ok I tried numerous ways of getting my previous instalation on a newly installed copy of win 7 x64 problem is, I can't see the recovery folder when I use the repair function when I use it under windows 7 ... an error log comes at the end of the process in which MOST of my files and settings are skipped here's what I tried:
-different admin users
-installing a second copy of windows on a different partition and trying to run the recovery with that installation, which didn't work because Windows 7 keeps labeling it's main partition as partition C ... so my main windows partition is labeled differently and the tool can't write the files to their initial paths
-tried a dos tool, copied all the files and folders myself to the normal paths, this didn't work because of errors I'm not an expert, but I get along with computers, now this has deffinetely proven very difficult for me

I currently own a PC and a laptop. I have an external HD on my PC and I'm trying to be able to access those files through my laptop via XBMC. I've followed many tutorials online to no avail. I don't know much about networking or file sharing so there's my first downfall. I've tried setting up a home group on my main PC but the join home group option is grayed out on the laptop.
PC is windows 7 Professional x64
Laptop is Windows 8 x64

I have 2 Laptops running under XP and 2 Laptops running under Win 7, I run the XP under workgroup with Mshome name and these 2 laptops can access files from each other, similar under Homegroup, the Win 7 laptops can see each other.
The XP laptops CANNOT see the laptops under win 7, and vice versa. I read the How-to Geek article a few times , I tried to change the name MShome under XP to Workgroup, even then the win 7 and xp cannot see each other. Even worse the XP laptops cannot access each other.
Any suggestions.

I have a brand new Windows 7 professional x64 system. I have just today established a wireless network between that computer and my old XP computer. The Windows 7 box has a wireless antenna and the XP box has a hardwired broadband modem that is capable of wireless. It all works fine. I can access the Internet from my wireless box through the broadband modem.
But now what I want to do is share files and perhaps even printers between the two computers. Can someone give me a step-by-step to get the two systems to see each other or point me to a previous thread or link.

I haven't been able to do this and just assumed that it wasn't possible until I saw this: Select multiple files or folders. This doesn't work on my computer, can other people open Explorer and select more then one folder at a time? I've tried this when I wanted to move multiple folders to an external drive and had to do them one at a time.

I have an old 7 installation that I'm having difficulties exterminating. I want to delete: Windows, Program Files, Program Files (x86). I am aware this is not advisable etc etc, but that advice is inapplicable here because the installation is now on a data disk. I've tried some command line stuff with "takeown" and tried giving full permissions, but it is remarkably stubborn. Everything I did partially worked, but ultimately failed to get the job done.

I formatted my system today and did a clean install of Windows 8 and now my USB storage drive says cannot access. I remember vaguely adding permissions or taking ownership to the files when I was on Win 7 but dont remember what it is I did exactly. I was trying to hide my files from other users who logged into my computer and I strongly believe that I took ownership of those files.
Basically if I format my PC again and when I browse my storage drive it shouldn't bug me for ownership or permissions. or if I put the drive in another PC it shouldn't ask for me for ownership/permissions. How do undo this?

I am working on automation project in which we are installing the Windows OS on client machine with the help of different OS packages available on server. While installing Windows XP/2003 we are checking for the OS installer packages to get the difference between x86 and x64 architectures.e.g. x86 package contains - I386 folder and PRODSPEC.INI file. and x64 package contains - I386 folder, PRODSPEC.INI and one additional folder AMD64..Is there any such specific folders or file for Windows 7installer package, by using which we can identify that this is for x86 or for x64?

I have windows 7 starter running on my pc and when I search for files or folders that are sure present on my PC or want to search for remaining files or residual folders after uninstalling programs in windows 7, the search function in Windows 7 finds no remaining files or residual folders (in the case of uninstalled programs or folders and files that are sure present on my pc), even when I search in "computer"(via windows explorer).
This happens with both indexing enabled and disabled.i enabled all of the search options(Really I enabled all of the options that are possible). I really need this because after a while my hdd will be full of unneeded files and folders.i also tried ccleaner but without success. If necessary with a different search tool, but preferably in windows 7 itself. I think it has nothing to do with indexing but I am not sure of that.

I have my current Windows 7 setup on a regular 2TB drive (about 1.4TB of which is used). I would like to move my installation onto my new SSD (only 256GB), and obviously I can't simply clone it. I do NOT want to just install from scratch (I have a bazillion programs installed, it would take forever to do that over)
What I was thinking, was that I could migrate the base system files onto the SSD, and then use symbolic links to point to my bulkier folders (Program Files & Downloads are taking up most of the space, and I don't particularly care if these are at SSD speed) which would be located on the 2TB HDD. Does anyone know of a way to migrate a Windows 7 while excluding certain folders? If I could do that, then after the migration I could just set up symbolic links to point to my main storage drive without having to start from scratch.

I have a 128GB SSD for booting and games and a 1tb hard drive for storage. Because my OS is on my boot drive, the location for my videos folder is on the boot drive and I don't want to store my movies on my boot drive because of space constraints. I'm using homegroup to stream movies to my mother's computer. Is there any way I can stream videos from a folder in my storage drive or any alternative method for changing the root destination of the videos folder in my C drive?

I am trying to remove several context menu items for some file types AND folders.I've noticed that the right-click context menus differ depending on the file type, and also the folder type, depending on what type of files are in the folder. I've search far and wide, and have not been able to find software that will let me edit the menus. I've tried ShellExView and ShellMenuView but they don't list any of the menu items I'm looking for. I've tried every other software I could find. Does anyone insight into this? Is it impossible to remove certain items?
