Windows Files Folders And Drive Ownership

Jan 15, 2013

I formatted my system today and did a clean install of Windows 8 and now my USB storage drive says cannot access. I remember vaguely adding permissions or taking ownership to the files when I was on Win 7 but dont remember what it is I did exactly. I was trying to hide my files from other users who logged into my computer and I strongly believe that I took ownership of those files.
Basically if I format my PC again and when I browse my storage drive it shouldn't bug me for ownership or permissions. or if I put the drive in another PC it shouldn't ask for me for ownership/permissions. How do undo this?

Slave Drive Access / Taking Ownership Of Folders - File Not Found Error

Feb 8, 2012

I know there are a myriad of slave drive access issue posts on here. My thing is that I've managed to take ownership of my slave drive; formerly in a tower - now trying to access it thru my windows 7 laptop. Ive taken ownership of " my documents," but it doesn't seem like it took; I still have to take ownership of every folder in it individually when I go into it. Furthermore, when I going into my music or video folders - I get a "file not found" error when I try to open the files.

Old Hard Drive In New Windows 7 Computer But Can't Access Files & Folders

Jul 28, 2011

I have an old hard drive with a ton of pictures and other irreplaceable files on it from a computer I had few years back. In case it makes any difference, the computer that hard drive originally was in ran Windows XP Pro.I recently got a new computer, with Windows 7 and had the hard drive put into this new computer, along with the hard drive that came in the computer.I can get to the drive itself, but when I try to access folders or files, either access is denied or folders which should contain more folders, are empty. I have tried changing the permission and ownership options on the drive, but no luck.

Windows 7 Installed - Cannot Delete Files Or Change Ownership

Oct 24, 2012

I just installed Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit on two machines, and then Firefox 16.0.1 on each. Trying to replace the password files in my new profile, I found that many of these folders and files (in UsermeAppDataRoamingMozilla) cannot be deleted, nor can their ownership be changed. They belong to me already, and I'm an administrator with Full Control.

I've tried 72 tricks, including Emco UnLockIt 3.0.3, Unlocker 1.9.1, Take Ownership registry keys, takeown (from the command line), etc. Nothing works. I can't move them, delete them or anything. Nor can Mozbackup create a backup profile (it can't write the backup). Why does Firefox create these weird locked files and folders? Why doesn't Windows 7 allow me to take control of them?

How To Move Files / Folders From PC To Say A Flash-drive

Jan 10, 2012

I just got a new laptop pc with windows 7 home premium 64 bit. I'm making the jump from Windows XP to 7.I know I have to make a recovery cd. Should I do it before or after I remove a lot of unwanted bloatware that came with the new PC? How can I tell if I have service pack 1 installed? If not, where can I go to download it? Or should I? The new laptop is a HP brand desktop replacement with a 17.3 screen. My old one has a 15.4. I'm having trouble adjusting to the wider screen. Also having problems adjusting it to where I can read text clearly. I tried the true-text settings, and the dpi but the text still looks too small and fuzzy. What happened to the Move, Copy, Delete menu that appears on the left hand side in Windows XP when you highlight a file or folder? How do you move files/folders from the PC to say a flashdrive or vice versa?

Moving All Hard Drive Files 4 Folders Up

Nov 3, 2012

I have 465gb of files and folders on a 500Gb hard drive that needs to be cut/pasted higher in the folder hierarchy.

Here's a visual:

The reason this happened is my HD broke down and I had to send it to a company (ChronoDisk) to extract the information to another HD. This is how they sent it.

I need to move those files because the path used by many programs/files are broken. Is it possible to do this without actually cut/pasting? My guess is it might crash half way or simply not work at all because there is not enough empty space to make a cut.

DRAG N DROP Files / Folders To Hard Drive

Jan 10, 2009

Wondering if there should be a STICKY, GROUPS or THREADS for TIPS and TRICKS? in this forum -combined perhaps with a wish list that we can send to MSFT every month

Anyway, one thing I really like about OS X is the ability to drag a folder from desktop to computer, then the window auto opens, displaying root, then you can drag over another folder (which opens to display sub root) and so on until you find the place where you want to dump the folder.

Is there a way to do this in Win 7 (or Vista)?

EDIT: NEW = it will allow you to drag a folder from desktop to start button than into my documents folder. Not bad but better than nothing. All we need now is for my documents to open and have it display sub folders and/or the ability to drag anywhere. Advice?

Canot Take Ownership Of Files?

Apr 1, 2011

Not sure if this is where this should go but I am having an issue with an old windows folder that is on my hard drive after doing a reinstall. Everytime I try to delete it it tells me I need permission to perform this action. That I require permission from xyz, which was my last computer name. I go to security and see that full control is set for adminstrators, So i go to advanced and take control of the folder.I go to delete the folder now, and it tells me still that I need permission to perform this action, You require permission from the administrator to make changes to this folder.Im confused since I am the adminstrator on the omputer, the only user. So i set full control and access to everything for every little user it had listed and still nothing. Not able to delete the folder. Personally I would rather not have to format my hard drive to solve this issue. Whats going on here and how do I fix it

Cannot Access Files Even After Ownership And Permission Changes

Apr 20, 2011

I recently reformatted my hard drive so before I moved all the files I wanted to my external hard drive.

So I'm all formatted with Windows 7 Ultimate re-installed and I'm trying to move all the files back. For whatever reason, a couple pictures (.jpg) and a couple videos (.avi) will not move or open. They were all contained in the same folder.

It was saying access denied and I needed permission from S-1-5-....gigantic number. So I changed the ownership and permissions of the files and the folders. Now it says I need permission from myself (Laptop/Kevin). I am the only account and have administrator privileges.

Reinstalling Windows 7 And Ownership Of User Data On Different Drive

Oct 24, 2012

I keep all my data on a separate drive. The last time I re-installed windows 7 I had to take ownership of all my data even though the user name on the old install and then new install was the same. After reading the forums I understood that the SID for my user name was different between the old and new installations.

So my questions are

1) Is there anyway to assign the old user SID to the user created in the newly reinstalled OS so that I don't have to take ownership for a huge number of files/folders recursively?

2) If there is no way to assign the SID how do people store their data to allow for easy reinstall of the OS/Migration to a different computer?

Copying 600K Files From External Drive To USB 3.0 Partition - Merge Folders?

Nov 24, 2012

I just spent like 18 hours copying 600K files, 1.33 TB, from a USB 2.0 ext. drive to a 1.36 TB USB 3.0 partition, but at the very end I got a handful of prompts to replace folders that already existed in the newly created folder, asked me to merge the original folder with the one just copied on the destination drive, eventually asking for permission to replace thousands of items and that's what it's doing now. I don't know what's going on. It appears that all files are there in both folders on each drive (with the exception of half a dozen that wouldn't copy due to long filenames).

Nearest I can guess is it is writing DOS names in addition to Windows names so the computer is going to spend more than a dozen more hours doing that. Windows Explorer copy wrongly offers to merge folders Windows Explorer copy wrongly offers to merge folders. The folder being copied that is being merged is called Drive(D), probably from a backup of Win 98SE being restored onto a Win XP machine, so it may resemble a system folder to Windows 7.

Ownership Of A Entire Drive?

Dec 29, 2011

I'm helping out my wife's friend who has a Dell Dimension 4700 with Windows Xp. So her motherboard fried and wanted me to transfer her files over to a new backup hard drive. So I took the hard drive out and hooked it up to my computer running Windows 7. I can see the files and everything just fine but when I click on a folder I get the "You don't currently have permission to access this folder" Click continue to permanently get access to this folder. So I click continue and it wants me to go to a security tab and change the owership from Unable to display current owner to Admin. The problem I'm running into is that it wants me to do that for every folder and file. Is their a way that I can do a blanket ownership over the whole drive, or is their a way to transfer the files without having to take ownership of the drive so my friend can just copy and paste the files with no problems.

Disc Drive Won't Allow To Change Ownership Or Permission

May 28, 2012

Ever since I've had my computer there has been an extra drive on it. it was called microsoft (Protected). It has absolutely nothing on it, and it has no use. I have been trying to delete it to no avail, so I renamed it to annoying drive.

Whenever I try to access it it gives me an access denied message. It has no owner, or even permissions, and when I try to change it to me, or the admin, it gives me the same message. I went to the list of things on the computer, and I can't even find it. I then attempted using lock hunter to find out what was blocking me from changing the file. Also to no avail. It says that there is nothing protecting it.

Not Able To Change Ownership On External Sata Drive?

Feb 16, 2012

I've googled and tried many methods to fix this over the last two hours but nothing so far as worked.I have an old hard drive with data on it from my old Windows XP Professional computer attached to a usb port on a converter. Win 7 claims it cannot display the owner, if I try to take permission it says permission denied. If I take down the UAC the hard drive no longer appears in My Computer.I have tried to go in as the administrator account specifically it keeps giving me access denied. I tried using the administrator account in normal mode and using the command line 'take owner' command and it says access denied.I tried going into administrator safe mode, but again the external hard drive won't show up.Shortly I am planning on reformatting the current C drive and putting on Windows Xp Pro 32 bit, Win 7 and Ubuntu. Should I just wait till do that and hope it will miraculously identify it if I take control of it with Xp Pro? I'm really hoping this isn't going to indicate problems sharing files between the two operating systems on the same hard drive.

Access Denied And Can't Take Ownership On Network Hard Drive

Oct 17, 2010

I have a network hard drive mapped as Z: which I have become unable to do ANYTHING with. I can't delete anything, change anything, or add anything to the drive. I just get that blasted "Destination folder access denied. You need permission to perform this action."

The internet has provided me with a plethora of solutions to this issue, and none of them have worked. I'm logged on as administrator. User Account Control is totally off. Windows 7 will allow me to neither change permissions nor ownership of Z: or any folder or file within Z:.

I try giving Full Control to Everyone and it says "An error occurred while applying security information to (file name). Access is denied." I go into Advanced and click the Owner tab. It states the current owner of everything on Z: is "nobody," and if I try to change the owner, it says "Unable to set new owner on Z:. Access is denied."

I've tried going into command prompt and changing ownership using "takeown /f Z:" and I just get "Z: Access is denied."

Lost File Ownership Of Computer - C Drive Blocked / MS Visual Runtime Library Error

Apr 3, 2011

I have a toshiba laptop running windows 7 32bit and made some changes to folder ownership that has wrecked havoc on my machine. I am the only user for this machine and am listed at the administrator. The changes I made were under the "users" folder, and the folder that listed my name. I don't even recall why I was tinkering with it but made a change under file folder properties/security/ownership. Since that change, it has done many things, including removing files and folders from my desktop and computer that do not show up anymore at all. It has blocked me from the c: drive. aApop up upon start up stats microsoft visual runtime library error c:program files. and on and on.

I have done a system restore to prior when I made the changes to no avail. it does the restore, but does not change the folder ownership or issues I am having. I have tried to reset the folder under options to a previous setting but that has not worked and now has me blocked from even going into my c: all together.. saying access denied. I have had no luck under control panel fixing this and have done more harm than good. Is there an easy way to get back control of my computer and regain the files that are not showing up. I have been looking for a way, similar to system restore, to reverse the changes to file ownership and give me control of my computer again. I would think this would be easy since im the system admin but no luck so far.

"Take Ownership" Of Files Not Working

Next, I updated my windows from XP to 7 Home Premium 32bit. This is where I think the trouble begins. I installed Windows 7 on driveA and let it keep a Windows.old folder to keep all my old things. Install went swimmingly and I was happy as a clam. I could operate any file any time from any location no worries.I can't open well over half of my files. The vast majority being pictures. I am talking thousands. Every picture I have taken from 2007-2010 and every picture saved from the internet along with music and videos. I have tried going through folders and individual files properties and changing permissions. I am the only user and I am the administrator but I have checked every box Allow just the same. I still cannot access my files. I don't know when this happened, or why, or how. I just know that I would sure love to have all of my wedding photos, family albums, etc. I have also tried using the registry "take ownership" tweak and the same results. Nothing changes. I have changed them all, restarted, and they still will not open. Can't see a thumbnail and no program can open it. The permissions stay saved as 'allow - all'

-different admin users

-installing a second copy of windows on a different partition and trying to run the recovery with that installation, which didn't work because Windows 7 keeps labeling it's main partition as partition C ... so my main windows partition is labeled differently and the tool can't write the files to their initial paths

-tried a dos tool, copied all the files and folders myself to the normal paths, this didn't work because of errors I'm not an expert, but I get along with computers, now this has deffinetely proven very difficult for me
