View 12 Replies View RelatedI have a Pavilion dv-6 2155dx laptop. Windows 7. It's worked fine until recently. I have rebooted many times No change. The ON/OFF bell seems to work ok but the number pad does not work correctly. It does "strange" things now. Some keys do "something" and others do not as follows:
/ types a slash * types an asterisk - types a minus sign + types a plus sign
Enter seems to be ok
7, 8, 9, 4, 6, 1, 2, 3, DEL do nothing
5 unhighlights anything highlighted in a browser search bar. If nothing is highlighted then 5 does one of several things: brings up Page Navigation option, moves flashing cursor one space to left OR causes flashing cursor to disappear altogether. 0 seems to now and then cause the flashing cursor to disappear.
This has got to be something easy that I probably accidentally screwed up. I have tried to go into BIOS but directions I found did not get me to menus described to me.
I have not been able to use the apostrophe key because of some keyboard setting I can`t fathom. Basically, to use the key I have to hold it down for ages but then lots of them appear after a really long delay. I know it`s not the keyboard because if I change to Japanese input it works okay.It is not the problem where it waits for the next key to be pressed before appearing. How do I fix this for my UK keyboard?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm new, I'm not english (so, I'm sorry since now if something will be wrong with the language) and I have a big problem with my video card since I installed Windows Seven.
AMD does not support my video card (an ATi Radeon 9550 256Mb) with compatible drivers for Seven. I tried to install the drivers for Xp 32bit but even if I selected the compatibility mode (in properties) for that OS, when I restarted Windows after all the driver installation process I can't see anything on my monitor, or better, I see (it's difficult to explain) many vertical lines mainly colored in white and black flashing continously.
Now, I changed the video card with another one, only to uninstall the old drivers and retry in another way. And here comes out the second problem. When I go in the Control Panel to select the windows uninstall tool he says me that it's impossible to uninstall old drivers or non-ATi drivers.
I'm looking for an external tool for uninstalling driver; I found Driver Magician. except this second problem, is there any solution for the incompatibility with my video card? (please, don't say me to change it )(I tried to search here on the forum for something, but I didn't find anything).
I have downloaded and unzipped a set of C project files from a Google code repository into a folder on my PC so that I can study the code. I would like to use search so that I can find the files where particular variables are used.In windows explorer, I browse to the folder at the top of the tree, and then in the search box I type a variable name that I know exists in one of the files. Search always comes back with "No items match your search".

View 2 Replies View RelatedI reformatted my PC and now I'm unable to get windows built-in search to "work" again. I want to be able to search inside the (hundreds of) files using specific keywords (and to actually search the files, with no indexing bullshit). I know this is possible because I managed to make it work before, but I just can't remember how I did that.
Turning on "Always search file names and contents (this might take several minutes)" under folder options seems no to do anything at all (but I've kept it selected anyway). Then I tried disabling indexing via computer management -> services and apps -> services -> windows search -> disable (and rebuilding the index), but that doesn't seem to accomplish what I'm after either.
I have windows search disabled, but do find myself occasionally searching through emails, is it enough to just enable indexing in outlook or does it require the OS indexing also enabled.

Without an ability to search my computer I am pretty much lost now.
I first got Win 7 without success. Search simply does not work. Answers on-line say click on start and type in the search box, but when I do, I get nothing. Same thing with Explorer. Typing in the search box yields nothing.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWindows 7 Ultimate, upgrade install from Vista. Toshiba Satellite laptop. I searched for this both in Google and on this forum, can't find anything. I can type into the search/run box in the start menu, but nothing happens when I do. No search items come up; if I type in a program name, I can't make it run by hitting enter. If I open a command prompt I can run anything I want from there. This happened several weeks after the upgrade, it was working fine. I had to clean several virus infections, so my thinking is that something got removed from the registry that shouldn't have. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance, forums like this have been a lifesaver for me more than once. I rarely have to post, I can usually find my problem, but this one seems to be a bit odd. Just remembered the other odd thing that happened, seemingly along with the above: my "printers and devices" window is empty. The devices are there, and work, but they're not listed in the window. As far as I know, this happened around the same time the other issue did. I did find some mention of this problem on the net, but none of the fixes worked for me. Don't know if it's relevant or not, but better too much info than not enough.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy problem is when I go into computer (my computer) the search in the top right isn't working from within this window! However if I click to go into an individual drive the search will then work from within there on the individual drive. At first it told me the index had been switched off, so I turned it back on even rebuilt the index. & its still the same except it doesn't tell me about the index when I try to search anymore.
It will still search within the individual drives but not from within the computer window. Apart from this the installation works fine. I even run a scan with Kaspersky & Spybot S&D to make sure of any nasties causing it. & run a CHkdisk this morning. I would rather not have to perform a system restore or new installation. It took me ages to install all my apps & don't fancy doing it again.
This is really strange.. i have noticed for a few days that the search in the star menu isn't working... i shrugged this off the last few times because i didn't really need it(just being lazy trying to find a program)... but today... i typed run... and instead of finding run like normal it shows a few options "programs", "control panel", "documents", and "files" now these all have blank icons and when i click on programs(the obvious selection) i get a pop up from windows security that says"These files can't be openedYour Internet Security settings prevented one or more files from being opened."and in "show details"... "Programs"

View 3 Replies View RelatedOutlook 2007 Task search versus Windows7 computer wide search.
I enter the same keyword (one of the words contained within the title of a completed task) in the Outlook Task search box as I do the Windows 7 orb 'search programs and files.' The Windows 7 search returns the correct search result (along with a lot other results having the same keyword) practically immediately whereas Outlook is still searching...and searching.
If I have index options set to include the C: drive and Outlook, what's going on with Outlook?
I began having an issue with my laptops ATI Radeon graphics driver not working properly. It is fixed now, but the other issues I was having at the same time was not being able to view indexed files through the "search programs and files" and "windows explorer search" box. The screen goes blank or does not produce any results. Also, one of my downloaded software disk programs will not open--error. This particular program, Logos Bible software, index its files quite often. Even when I am not using the program. I also cannot change my desktop background to any picture except solid colors. I think my laptop has a corrupted file somewhere, or it is infected with malware.
View 1 Replies View Related"windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error I have been experiencing lately.
The problem is similar to the one I described previously (here: Windows could not start the Windows Search service on Local Computer)
...namely, I am running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and have experienced the same error message ( windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX', where XXX is my search query) when attempting to initiate a search via the Windows start menu search box. Unfortunately, my previously proposed solution (of removing a network search location from Windows Search Index list) does not resolve it.....and so finally I resorted to using Samhrutha's proposed solution of modifying the registry to reset Windows Search back to default (which DID work...but ended up removing all the search index customizations I had made).
However, when I then modify the search indexing options to include indexing of my C: drive, I get the "windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error message.
If I then uncheck the C: drive box in the search in the search indexing options, the error message does not occur....so I then went thru a tedious process of trying to identify which folders on my C drive were causing the issue, and from what I am able to tell, the "windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error message seems to always occur when the indexing options include at least one folder WHICH IS OWNED by TRUSTED INSTALLER (e.g., program files folder, program files (x86), c:, etc.). This wasn't a problem previously, so my guess is that MS Update recently (e.g., w/in the last few months) changed some security setting which now prevents Windows Search from being able to index/access folders owned by TRUSTED INSTALLER, resulting in the "windows cannot find 'search:query=XXX'" error message.
Not only does my search bar lacking in search filters (cannot search for videos only etc) but I could never get print screen to work. With XP I never had any of the above problems. How can MS downgrade their OS to such an extent??
