Apr 8, 2011

Yesterday I bought a Western Digital 2TB hard drive, what I have done is installed windows 7 on my old 640GB and all my software and music is on my new drive (2TB), The issue is I have changed the location of music and videos etc., to the new drive (drive letter A). (Right click on the folder and change the location to the a drive). Now when I search for music and films in my search bar it doesn't work. I have tried a few of the results from google and not had any success.

Indexing Doesn't Work - Windows Search Service Stopped

Apr 6, 2011

My indexing stopped. When I checked "Windows Search" service is in auto startup mode but it wasn't running. When I tried to manually start, it gave me "Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified." message.

Without an ability to search my computer I am pretty much lost now.

Windows Search And Indexing Do Not Work In Windows 7?

Jun 16, 2011

I swapped hard drives on my laptop by cloning. Everything works fine except Windows Search and indexing, which worked fine before. I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I've tried the "solutions" on the Microsoft help site but none has worked yet. I only one I didn't try was to reinstall Windows because that takes so long.

Start Menu Search Doesn't Work?

Jul 23, 2012

This is really strange.. i have noticed for a few days that the search in the star menu isn't working... i shrugged this off the last few times because i didn't really need it(just being lazy trying to find a program)... but today... i typed run... and instead of finding run like normal it shows a few options "programs", "control panel", "documents", and "files" now these all have blank icons and when i click on programs(the obvious selection) i get a pop up from windows security that says"These files can't be openedYour Internet Security settings prevented one or more files from being opened."and in "show details"... Search Indexing For Outlook Emails?

Jul 21, 2011

I am having a problem with Windows 7 search when searching for emails:

1)When searching for an outlook email in the "instant search" bar in Outlook, the results are as expected (many results are displayed for the search term)
2) However, when searching from a search box using the exact same term as in #1 above, (e.g. when using "option F"), no results are displayed.

My understanding is that both of these search methods utilize the same index, application, etc...so this is perplexing. In looking at Indexing Options, it appears to be completely indexed. I have tried to rebuild the index several times with the same results.

Search Option Not Indexing Partitions

Jul 6, 2011

Whenever I buy a TV show or movie, I put them in the correct partition (T: for TV shows and M: for Movies), and rename them so I can easily search for them. For example, I've got the 1st episode of the 1st season of "Through The Wormhole" named as: Through The Wormhole S01 E01

I used to just be able to type that into the search box and it would give me the exact result. I recently split all my media across 2 hard drives and reinstalled Windows - now I cannot search for anything in the M: and T: drives.

Turn Off Indexing And Allow Search For All Files?

May 23, 2012

When I do a search, I want Windows 7 to search all files in that folder recursively and return matches by filename and give me an option to search by text within those files (binary not optional obviously).I figured out how to turn off indexing but I can't make it search by all files and I'm not sure how to specify to search text within those files.I really don't care how long it takes to find a file as I'd rather wait to find it then have nothing return at all.

Windows Search Service/Indexing - Access Denied?

May 28, 2010

I have been trying to enable the search feature on my windows 7 64-bit machine but when I attempt to do so, or use indexing, nothing seems to happen. When I try to enable windows search in services I get "Windows could not start the Windows Search service on Local Computer - error 5 access denied."

When I detect problems in search and indexing it tells me windows search service is not running but lists the error as not fixed. When I try to manually add a config folder in the ProgramData - Microsoft - Search - Data folder it erases itself after a few seconds.

This account has full admin control, I don't get it. I even tried to do this through the hidden admin account.

This laptop is only a month old but I can't turn the search feature on. I think maybe if I modify it to not include the external in indexing it would not mess up, but I can't even touch the modify button without enabling windows search, which is currently impossible.

Windows Search Service Not Searching Music Artists In Server 2008 R2

Aug 25, 2012

There is a Windows 7 machine and a Windows Server 2008 R2 machine in the same network. The Windows Search service is running on Server 2008 R2 and on Windows 7, therefore their music folders are indexed and added to the Music library. On Windows 7, I can search an artist in the start menu search and songs come up corresponding to the artist I searched for. However in Server 2008 R2 when I search an artist no results show unless that artist is in the file name of the song.Does anyone know what Windows 7 Search Service is doing that Server 2008 R2 is not? Perhaps something else is missing in Server 2008? Ironically, if Windows 7 was sharing its indexed music folder and Server 2008 R2 added the shared folder to its music library, it will find artists I search for in Server 2008 R2.

Windows 7 WMP 12 Doesn't Find Transferred Music Files

Mar 1, 2012

I had a computer with Windows Vista, which was developing some problems, so I bought a new machine, which runs Windows 7 and Windows Media Player 12. I used EasyTransfer to transfer files to the new machine, and the music files are there -- I can see them in Windows Explorer. But WMP is only aware of some of the files. If I double-click a music file in Explorer, WMP will play it, and then it will show up in the library, but I have so many music files that double-clicking, and playing, every single one is not a great option. How do I get WMP to recognize all the files?

Since then I have found that Films on iTunes won't 'play' . Everythign else works fine - if I click on a DVD video in the music side, it works fine. When I click to play a Trailer of a Film I just get a black rectangle on my screen, when I run the mouse across it, I see the control bar become visible but totally black...... the trailer is playing and I can see it tracking across the bar at the top of the iTunes page.

Why Doesn't Windows Search Find Custom.dic?

Jan 9, 2012

I have two dictionary files on my hard drive, both in Cuserskathyapplication data oamingmicrosoftproof folder. Custom.dic and kathy.dic. I can only get search to find these by doing a custom search. Even then it finds these files everywhere BUT my C drive first, finally finding them on my C drive last. It goes through several mapped network drives and my external drive first and then finally shows these files last. How can I get these indexed so they just show up on a normal search where I press the windows key and type "custom.dic"? Second question is why aren't they found in the first place? Are dictionary files something special like system files that aren't normally searched for?

Windows 7 Search Doesn't Find Things?

Oct 22, 2012

I'll start out by saying that I don't like Windows 7 search. I liked "Search for files named . . ." or "Search for files containing text .but as usual no one asked me.My problem is one that I've had since I upgraded to Win 7. I have my user folders on E: and I set a junction to point C:UsersBarnabas to E:UsersBarnabas. Pretty simple. If I reference C:UsersBarnabasxyx.doc the file E:UsersBarnabasxyx.doc opens. Way cool. The problem is that for some reason this confused Windows search.Let's say I open up my desktop user folder and select Documents. I know that I have a file called Dogs.doc but I don't remember which folder it is in. So I put Dogs.doc into "Search" and hit go. No files found. However, if I open "My Computer" and navigate to E:SystemUsersBaranbas and do the same search, the file is found.Does anyone know of a fix for this problem. I know that I can use another search tool like FileSearchEX but MS was nice enough to put that Search box on nearly every window, I feel like I should take advantage of it.

Start Menu Run/search Box Won't Work

Oct 5, 2010

Windows 7 Ultimate, upgrade install from Vista. Toshiba Satellite laptop. I searched for this both in Google and on this forum, can't find anything. I can type into the search/run box in the start menu, but nothing happens when I do. No search items come up; if I type in a program name, I can't make it run by hitting enter. If I open a command prompt I can run anything I want from there. This happened several weeks after the upgrade, it was working fine. I had to clean several virus infections, so my thinking is that something got removed from the registry that shouldn't have. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance, forums like this have been a lifesaver for me more than once. I rarely have to post, I can usually find my problem, but this one seems to be a bit odd. Just remembered the other odd thing that happened, seemingly along with the above: my "printers and devices" window is empty. The devices are there, and work, but they're not listed in the window. As far as I know, this happened around the same time the other issue did. I did find some mention of this problem on the net, but none of the fixes worked for me. Don't know if it's relevant or not, but better too much info than not enough.

Search Won't Work In Computer (Within Window)

Feb 8, 2010

My problem is when I go into computer (my computer) the search in the top right isn't working from within this window! However if I click to go into an individual drive the search will then work from within there on the individual drive. At first it told me the index had been switched off, so I turned it back on even rebuilt the index. & its still the same except it doesn't tell me about the index when I try to search anymore.

It will still search within the individual drives but not from within the computer window. Apart from this the installation works fine. I even run a scan with Kaspersky & Spybot S&D to make sure of any nasties causing it. & run a CHkdisk this morning. I would rather not have to perform a system restore or new installation. It took me ages to install all my apps & don't fancy doing it again.
