My windows explorer search does not work at all, it use to work and when ever i typed in a word it would start searching for that word right away(file names) now nothing happens when i want to search.

I have downloaded and unzipped a set of C project files from a Google code repository into a folder on my PC so that I can study the code. I would like to use search so that I can find the files where particular variables are used.In windows explorer, I browse to the folder at the top of the tree, and then in the search box I type a variable name that I know exists in one of the files. Search always comes back with "No items match your search".

It is fixed now, but the other issues I was having at the same time was not being able to view indexed files through the "search programs and files" and "windows explorer search" box. The screen goes blank or does not produce any results. Also, one of my downloaded software disk programs will not open--error. This particular program, Logos Bible software, index its files quite often. Even when I am not using the program. I also cannot change my desktop background to any picture except solid colors. I think my laptop has a corrupted file somewhere, or it is infected with malware.

The "Add a Search Filter" is grayed out.
Here's some info on search filters that are available to be added-- but I haven''t figured out how to add them yet:
Date Created: Searches according to when the file was created. You can select the date (or a range of dates) from a mini-calendar that appears.
Kind: Search for files of a specific type as selected from the drop-down list that appears when you click the Kind option.
Type: Searches based on certain file types by extension, such as .pdf, .jpg, or .docx.
Name: Searches by filename. You can enter all or part of the filename in the search text box after the Name filter.
Tags: This filter lets you search for a file by the tags assigned to it. Enter one or more tags after the Tags filter in the Search text box.
Authors: Search for file by a particular author. Enter an author name after the Authors filter in the Search text box or select the name from the drop-down list that appears. (This filter is called Artists when searching audio files.)
I recently installed a program that was able to change folder backgrounds but uninstalled it, and I think this is what has caused this problem: Those same files show up no matter what I type in and they are all 0 bytes. If I right click one, Windows Explorer crashes.

I want to be able to search inside the (hundreds of) files using specific keywords (and to actually search the files, with no indexing bullshit). I know this is possible because I managed to make it work before, but I just can't remember how I did that.
Turning on "Always search file names and contents (this might take several minutes)" under folder options seems no to do anything at all (but I've kept it selected anyway). Then I tried disabling indexing via computer management -> services and apps -> services -> windows search -> disable (and rebuilding the index), but that doesn't seem to accomplish what I'm after either.

If I leave my computer on for roughly an hour I will go and attempt to either rename a file or search a file in the normal os search menu. The second I type one letter the os locks up and I am forced to end the explorer.exe process. I have recently reformatted my computer no more than 4 months ago and prior to that I was given the same problem. I have installed all the latest Windows 7 updates. I also tried sfc /scannow and I turned off MS security software and firewall all to no avail.Is there anything else I can try? View 1 Replies View RelatedI have problem with Internet Explorer 9 acclerator. After adding Google accelerator, I can't click on the blue button when you highlight on texts. Nothing pops up but when I remove the Google accelerator, it works again. It seems Microsoft doesn't like Google.
Another problem is I can't add Google search in the address bar. I tried two different methods but none works. Currently its set to Bing. One method is by click the Add button in the address bar when you type a phrase. When I click ADD, it takes me to this page but Google is not listed at all which again I think Microsoft doesn't like Google.
I click on Search link on the same page and I see Google listed but again its for accelerator not for address bar. That would stop my accelerator from working as I earlier mentioned. Another method for adding Google in address bar is by going from Tools > Manage add-ons which takes me to same page. Anyone know any other way to add Google as search provider for address bar?
Windows 7 Ultimate, upgrade install from Vista. Toshiba Satellite laptop. I searched for this both in Google and on this forum, can't find anything. I can type into the search/run box in the start menu, but nothing happens when I do. No search items come up; if I type in a program name, I can't make it run by hitting enter. If I open a command prompt I can run anything I want from there. This happened several weeks after the upgrade, it was working fine. I had to clean several virus infections, so my thinking is that something got removed from the registry that shouldn't have. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance, forums like this have been a lifesaver for me more than once. I rarely have to post, I can usually find my problem, but this one seems to be a bit odd. Just remembered the other odd thing that happened, seemingly along with the above: my "printers and devices" window is empty. The devices are there, and work, but they're not listed in the window. As far as I know, this happened around the same time the other issue did. I did find some mention of this problem on the net, but none of the fixes worked for me. Don't know if it's relevant or not, but better too much info than not enough.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy problem is when I go into computer (my computer) the search in the top right isn't working from within this window! However if I click to go into an individual drive the search will then work from within there on the individual drive. At first it told me the index had been switched off, so I turned it back on even rebuilt the index. & its still the same except it doesn't tell me about the index when I try to search anymore.
It will still search within the individual drives but not from within the computer window. Apart from this the installation works fine. I even run a scan with Kaspersky & Spybot S&D to make sure of any nasties causing it. & run a CHkdisk this morning. I would rather not have to perform a system restore or new installation. It took me ages to install all my apps & don't fancy doing it again.
This is really strange.. i have noticed for a few days that the search in the star menu isn't working... i shrugged this off the last few times because i didn't really need it(just being lazy trying to find a program)... but today... i typed run... and instead of finding run like normal it shows a few options "programs", "control panel", "documents", and "files" now these all have blank icons and when i click on programs(the obvious selection) i get a pop up from windows security that says"These files can't be openedYour Internet Security settings prevented one or more files from being opened."and in "show details"... View 10 Replies View RelatedYesterday I bought a Western Digital 2TB hard drive, what I have done is installed windows 7 on my old 640GB and all my software and music is on my new drive (2TB), The issue is I have changed the location of music and videos etc., to the new drive (drive letter A). (Right click on the folder and change the location to the a drive). Now when I search for music and films in my search bar it doesn't work. I have tried a few of the results from google and not had any success.
