Windows 7 Runs 100 Processes Right After Boot Up
May 19, 2012
My HP laptop runs about a hundred processes right after a fresh reboot and idles at about 2.2 GB (RAM). I have disabled almost everything in msconfig.. It still runs 95 processes minimum. It's windows 7 home premium service pack 1 (64 bit) if that's needed.. My antivirus/firewall is Avira Internet Security 2012 (not the free edition).

my hard drive that runs my windows 7 wouldn't boot, so in the end I re-imaged it, and since then I have no sound. I updated my drivers, checked it wasn't muted in the bottom panel, changed my leads, tried different types of leads, directly attached it to my tv to ensure it wasn't a problem with the amplifier, went to ASUS's site downloaded the new drivers again directly from them, got a snazzy new aplication out of it but still no sound. Checked my graphics cards are in securely, checked they're showing up, updated those drivers, ran windows updates a few thousand times, ran mr fix it, he tells me that the speakers, headphones etc are not plugged in, but they are. At least that's what the good fellow told me before my asus driver update, I will check back with him after walking my dog.

I've 2 dvd rewriters in my pc. Both Pioneer, one oldish and one older. The both work within windows. When I select multi-boot options to run a boot disc they are both displayed to choose from. However, if I select one of them, the disc boots. If I select the other one, the command to boot is ignored and the system boots into windows - obviously ignoring the dvd device. It's the newer one which is the problem. They both used to work ok with a boot disc.

My office system is a Dell w/ Win7 and it's been running fine up until 1 month ago. Then it started this odd behavior. On a cold boot it runs about 5x to 20x times slower than normal, almost as if it's just running on a single core locked at 5%. Boot time to hit splash screen is 2.5 to 4.5 minutes (normal is 30 secs). And once I hit return on my pwd the system continues to run in super slow motion. If I just force a reboot, select Boot Windows Normally from the trouble menu, the the system boots in 30 secs, logs in fine, and runs normally. My boss has told me that other Win7 computers he owns/operates are now doing the same thing.I've no idea what could be causing this. Hearing that other Win7 computers are doing it tends to make me believe it isn't a problem specific to this computer or even this small office network. There are no USB devices other than the mouse and keyboard and we've switched those out. We'd recently installed virus protection software, but we removed that and the problem still continues.
The only other thing I can think of, is that we recently installed a printer driver so the system could print to a Brothers laser printer attached via USB to a computer across the local network. And come to think of it, my system wouldn't even see that printer and allow driver installation until we plugged the printer directly into my system. After installation we moved the printer back, and changed the settings for the system to find the printer across the network. I'll look into uninstalling that driver next time I'm in the office.
Update: New day, new slow boot. This time I forced an early reboot and I got the option to start a Windows Startup Repair. I started that, skipped doing a System Restore and let it run. Finally it came back with all tests fine except the following which crashed: System Files Integrity Check and Repair , Failed , Error Code #0x490 , Time Taken = 541573 ms. So it looks like the test that checks for problems crashed, leaving me to wonder if there might still be some hidden problem. And yet reboots run perfectly normal.

I will be building my new PC shortly with an SSD as main OS drive and Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit OS. I'd like to minimize as much as possible all non essential background processes that write to disk. So I was thinking:
1) Disable all event logs that write txt files to disk (if possible, how is this done?)
2) Disable unnecessary services (which ones?)
3) Disable unnecessary scheduled events (disk defrag, etc)
4) Disable windows page file (I will be installing 32Gb RAM so maybe page file is not needed? And if so, how is this done?)
5) Disable System restore

I just got my computer back from my friend that was fixing my bad memory problem after geeksquad tried to bull**** me and I noticed I had alot of processes running and a bad ram usage. I just clean installed windows a week ago and only added like 3 programs (steam, G1 Live, and other needed stuff.)
When Im downloading a game my internet is slow as sh** and when Im browsing the web my 1000kbps comcast download speed on the game (which is already bad) drops down to 30kbps. Im guessing this is a ram/registry problem. Ive never cleaned the registry.

I messed around with Windows Defender some time ago and now its screwed I think.I have Windows 7 Home Basic, Windows Defender came with it.When I first installed Windows 7 there was always a process in Task Manager for Windows Defender "MsMpEng.exe" and maybe another one.Windows Defender is running properly if I check it in Control Panel but it is not appearing in Task Manager > Processes.services.msc > It is set to Automatic (Delayed Start) which I think is correct. How can I get the processes back running in Task Manager > Processes?

what is the typical number of processes that should be running in task manager on a typical standard version of Win 7 Home Premium, without any added programs? (Without IE being used)My Dad has a couple of year old HP Pavilion p6680t and it has about 62- 65 processes running before any browser is used. He also has Adobe Flash, Win Live Essentials, and MSE, along with a HP printer.

My Windows 7 install may be corrupted by something obscure that does not show up in or is not detected by Defender and other software. Is there a no simple way any longer to log processes and look at the names of the binaries and services rather than just watching them come and go in a Window? Or see how long it takes for a corrupted system driver to load? Or if the OS is constantly reloading it because it crashes? Has Windows Pro series become so dumbed down that effective system monitoring and analysis is now almost impossible?I do have Win7 pro so the system monitor and analysis tools should do more than just a "home" install does...but I cannot find any documentation on logging the activities of system processes anywhere. My install of Windows 7 seems to be indexing to drive like a dog with a broken hind leg. I was forced into a WGA check and it seems to me that there is something not quite right going on.I dread having to nuke and re-install because that means setting up all my wifes software and internet passwords, Citrix, office, and the list goes on and on...not to mention hours of updating Windows 7 from service pack one! My problems are most likely not a device on this machine because the machine runs like a dream with Knoppix, (my favorite OS of all time) Slackware or Mint Linux...but with the Windows7 that it was originally designed for it has recently started to run like a dog!
Could my trouble be something as simple as a flaky wifi driver? Strangely the Belkin USB wifi that I use runs like a top with Linux though, so I doubt that it is a hardware issue. The belkin driver is certified for Windows 7 and never acted up in the past.Because in the past I have seen Windows updates murder communication drivers especially with 2000 and XP it is a possibility that a recent critical update messed up the Belkin .inf ndis settings. Anyone else have a recent problem with 7 and Belkin Atheros USB wifi drivers?I will try running without the device and see if Windows gets its mojo back before I do anything drastic like nuke it and either dump windows for good or suffer through another ridiculous Windows cleansing re-install!

My system is a home built, Core I7, 8GB RAM, Radeon 560 TI with 2GB VRAM. Recently upgraded from 4GB RAM.
I was having this same issue with 4GB of RAM. After the computer has been on a bit (hour or two) the memory usage will approach 90% and upwards and things will start to run slowly. I close all active programs, kill all non-essential background programs (dropbox, steam, printer software etc). I look in my processes and no way does it all add up to nearly 8GB of memory.
So my question is, how do I get my computer to run faster? I know WIN 7 uses memory differently than XP did, and I don't care if it wants to use all the RAM, as long as it will run quickly. The problem is, it runs slowly.
I have WIN 7 x64 ultimate, I have ESET security suite and show no viruses. Problem goes away after I reboot, but returns over time.

It now freezes up at the desktop when I power up. It will only run in Safe Mode. I have reset it back to factory defaults 3 times and nothing seems to work to fix this problem. I am able to run it in Safe Mode with Networking and managed to get Hijackthis downloaded. I have a log file ready if you want it.I've been working on this thing for 5 days now and am ready to round file it. Below is the system information for that computer. Tech Support[CODE]

for the past couple of days I have noticed that Windows Installer will suddenly, for no reason, appear and disappear within a few seconds so not long enough to see what it is actually doing!MalwareBytes had caught two viruses it thought were Malware and I let MalwareBytes remove them, Microsoft Security Essentials caught a java exploit and removed it yesterday so I'm running a SuperAntiSpyware full scan (previous scans were all full scans) to see if anything has been missed.I have Windows Update set to check for updates only and I have updated to Service Pack 1 on a 64 bit machine.I am only concerned because I have spent days, if not weeks trying to make space on my External HDD in order to create a System Image for emergencies and don't want to end up having to go back to a system image that is infected with what most likely caused me to need to restore

I was forced to shut down my computer due to it having frozen up, whilst playing the Battlefield 3 single player. The computer crashed, and after about 5 minutes of rapidly pressing ctrl+alt+delete, and alt+tab, I decided the best way forwards was to force shut it down, by holding the shut down button. After restarting my computer, I noticed it took slightly longer to boot up. Hmm, nothing special. Then, I entered my login credentials, and after a 2-3 minute wait at the 'Welcome' screen, I was presented with a black screen, nothing more. After about 5 minutes, my cursor popped up. Oh, at least I have that. I pressed ctrl+alt+delete again, however after waiting 5 minutes for the screen to pop up, task manager simply would not open. I came back around 30 mins later, and the taskbar and my wallpaper had popped up. However, I pressed the start button to see if it would come up with the menu. Nothing. Cursor stops moving, bam. Another crash. Another forced restart.
This repeats once again, so I decide to head on into safe mode and try to go back to a restore point. Even safe mode is somewhat laggy, however it is not un-usable. After system restore is complete, nothing has changed. I still have to wait around 30 mins for the taskbar to pop up. I then tried using the repair tool you get to try if the computer doesn't start up properly. Doesn't work. My third option is to try out chkdsk, and that is happening as we speak. It has currently been going on for about 14 hrs, and found many corrupt files aparently in stage 4, however many of these files don't appear to be major. Its currently at 16% done, 205675 out of 371465 files processed.System specs wise, I have an Intel i5 460m processor @ 2.3ghz, 4GB RAM, 64bit operating system, and an ATI Mobility Radeon 5650, which I have overclocked to 650mhz core clock speeds, 950 memory clocks, from 450 - 790.

My Gateway runs great until a restart is requested by me or a program. A few days ago, it would restart just fine.
When I select Restart, the computer appears to shut down fine, it beeps to restart, the Windows 7 screen begins to open but it freezes with three colored dots on the screen. It always stops in exactly the same place.
If I kill power, then boot again I get an offer for Windows to repair itself. If I let it, it cannot repair. If I select Boot Windows Normally, all is well. I can't tell there are any issues. Except for this one problem, things are really running well. Odd.
I've run Chkdsk, SFC/ SCANNOW, and PC Pitstop Optimize3. Nothing finds a problem or fixes anything.
