View 6 RepliesI have a ASUS Laptop with Intel I3 processer and Windows 7 Home Premium. I recently had a forced shutdown during a Windows upgrade session. Ever since then the Boot and Shutdown times have increased to over 15 minutes. I have run the msconfig unticking all but the antivirus (Kaspersky) and it still takes >15 min to boot and Shutdown. Is there something I can do before I decide to reinstall Windows &. (I dont have a install disk.) The software came with the Computer and I have the OEM code (Bought at Best Buy)

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have two windows updates that keep failing. When i go to shutdown my computer I always have an update icon attached to the shutdown key. The download is always 1of1. Then when i reboot, the update icon is still there. I'm thinking since the two updates are failing, it has something to do with the 1of1 update not downloading properly. I went to windows update to check for new updates, and the only one is the two that keep failing. My computer just blue screened on shutdown today, winch got me thinking i really need to fix this.

View 2 Replies View RelatedIm not sure if this is in the right category, but I think it could be Windows 7 related. My Powersupply died the other day so I purchased a new one and all was fine, except when I shutdown it either freezes or carries on for what seems like forever. The only thing is that on bootup my DVD Drive and SSD have changed ports so my dvd drive is now device00 and my SSD001.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed windows 7 64-bit ultimate using a clean install since i had windows xp. Everything installed ok. The problem I'm having is that when i shut down, it automatically restarts instead of shutting down. It runs through the BIOS and POSTS as if i restarted. There are no errors listed when it restarts. It's as if i pressed restart instead of shutdown. The only way i can turn off my computer is when i hold down my power button for 3 seconds.

I recently bought an Alienware m17x and it keeps shutting down randomly. I tried reinstalling a fresh version of windows just to be sure and reupdating all of the drivers to match my computer's needs. (via windows update and Driver Genius)It never shuts down randomly in safe mode though, so it tells me: (Correct me if I'm wrong)
1) It's not one of the absolutely critical files causing it, since the files/drivers work without shutting down in safe mode
2) It's not an overheating problem since it doesn't shut down randomly in safe mode
3) Probably not a problem with the battery, or else it would shut down in safe mode too. (Right?)
I still have a 1 year warrenty with Alienware/Dell but I'd rather not wait several weeks (send/receive, fix, send back which takes a while b/c shipping takes atleast a week each way) for them to receive it, fix it, and send it back. (I'd prefer to use that as a last resort because I use/need my computer daily)Dell does have a BIOS flasher for Alienware m17x which I have not tried yet?

But have not found any. At first I thought it was th eIE since the shutdown always occurred while surfing th eInternet. But, I have had it shutdown once not being on th eInternet (maybe 99 to 98% while on the internet). The computer will run for days, weeks and even months before it shows up again. I have replaced the Power supply, the video card with one just like it, and rearranged the memory (3 x 2g) OCZ GoldI have run the memory test with Windows 7 and no problems were found. Where do I go from here? I have never seen the temparature exceed 42 C. The Vcore is 0.94, +3.3v is 3.33, +5 is 5.19, +12v is 12.25, CPU temp 33 C, and MB is 30C as I write this message

View 5 Replies View RelatedLooks like something is holding it up, I reinstalled the drivers but I think it might be a software issue where a program is not exiting properly and holding the system down.Every once in a while the system will shut down but most of the time it hangs on shut down, times out and errors out.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThis tutorial will show you how to set the amount of time Windows 7 waits for programs to save data and close before shutting down. Always, as usual, make sure you save and close applications before shutting down to prevent data loss. I also recommend that you backup the registry before editing it.
View 0 Replies View RelatedI've got a problem with shutting down Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit version, I have read through all the posts about windows restarting when shutdown is pressed or the off button is pressed on the desktop PC. I have gone into BIOS and altered the restart in event of system failure, and also done the same on My Computer in advanced settings but none have worked.I have done a check on Microsoft's website to check all the hardware and software too, and the results were all clear. Apart from Adobe Photoshop 3, when I installed this program for some reason I was unable to get an internet connection. And I had to swap my Panda Internet Security for Windows Security Essentials, which I have found out since is better than most of the top brands that you pay for; and it is free to all those people who have got the genuine system from Microsoft.I have all the latest updates for the software and drivers too, also done a full scan of the PC including the two external hard drives that I have connected to the PC.

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy PC will not shutdown properly. When I try to shutdown a screen will appear saying 'Sidebar.exe' asking me to force the shutdown. All of the Gadgets disappear but it only leaves one Gadget, the currency gadget on the desktop and then the forced shutdown screen appears asking me to force shutdown. I think the Sidebar.exe stops responding at shutdown. This started to happen not long ago and happens everytime. I am running Windows 7 64 bit. Now not only the currency gadget, it seems other gadgets too. I had done some checks on my own like closing the gadgets and see if it happens, and it still happens.

View 9 Replies View RelatedHad this problem on a Dell XPS M1330 running Vista and then upgrading to Win 7 64bit. Try flashing or updating BIOS first. Then unplug and replug (or replace if bad) the CMOS battery to reset BIOS. Remember CMOS holds the settings in BIOS. So when no power to CMOS, BIOS settings get wiped out (BIOS tells your pc what to do when it starts). Reset to default settings in BIOS. This fixed my restart issue! I tried all kinds of fixes and this was the only one that worked! Not all are software related issues. Any hardware changes can cause this problem like adding a IDE drive to a SATA board. Make the drive a slave changing it from cable select for example.

i've recently done a fresh install inc SP1 of win 7Pro x64 and now the pc almost constantly hangs on shutdown.everythings up to date driver wise etc.I was aware of this problem on my older quadcore machine but had it very infrequently, this happens almost constantly on my new one.Found a hotfix which i tried to install but had a warning say that "not applicable to my computer", i then realised that the problem was addressed in SP1.

View 3 Replies View RelatedYesterday I received a text message from my aunt stating that something is wrong with her computer.I built her computer a few months ago and everything has been going fine until now. She stated that her computer was updating and stuck at 30% "all day" so she shut it down in the middle of it. When she turned it back on she said that all of her emails from march until july are missing. I mainly think that any problem with her computer is caused by the fact that she never shuts it down. Since the day that I built it, I have always told her to shut it down when she is not using it. I asked my cousin how many times a week she shuts down her PC and he told me, if I am lucky, twice a month. From what I know, she has Windows 7 Home Edition 64bit and is using Thunderbird as an email client. She shut down her computer while windows was updating itself and is now missing important emails from March to July. After asking her to check her email providers website, she stated that none of the emails are there either.

I will say this is not a overheating issue nor a power supply problem nor a short circuit, this is not a windows installation error , nor a virus.

I have been having this random problem where my computer fails to shutdown every time. I know it is a general question but I have no idea why this happens. The only thing I remember changing was my sound card, but it is disabled in the device manager so I don' think that is the issue. Is there any way I can log events to see why it is crashing?
