Three days ago I found the computer safe mode with the message: Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown...and so on...Computer then would boot normally, but after a few minutes the monitor would go black. After shutting down with the button, the boot sequence would read Windows did not shut down normally...From there I got it to boot normally a couple of times, but after a few minutes a single mouse-click on something would kill the monitor again...eventually it would only boot into safe mode -- by itself. The graphics deteriorated to a more pixelated fuzzy mess, and suddenly even before the OS started it was low resolution I upgraded the driver to the latest (clean install) and last night things seemed fine. I left it on all night and this morning everything was fine and it worked great...for a few minutes. System Restore didn't help (grasping at straws here) but in Safe Mode With Networking everything seems just as it should (for safe mode, that is...). I am going to try to reset the card but I'm wondering if I'm correct in thinking it's probably the graphics card?

Windows has recovered from an unexpected shutdown. A problem has caused windows to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available. This happens multiple times a day... generally in the background. What do you recommend? All my drivers seem to be OK in the Device Mgr.

I have a brand new Desktop PC - running Windows 7 - 8gb ram - iTB HD and I have to say it is running perfectly well. However, when I shut it down yesterday I noticed that the PC restarted itself and stated ' windows had recovered from an unexpected shut down' blue screen, and it gave me details of a mini dump file for the error. The mini dump file is empty so nothing reported there. In the event log it states the issue was 'kernel' as follows: The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly. My husband suggested I shut down too soon before allowing ie to close properly.

My Netbook power profile has these battery setting:
Level: Battery action/Plugged In
Critical Level: 5%/5%
Critical action: Hibernate/Hibernate
Low Battery Level: 7%/10%
Low Battery Action: Nothing/Nothing
Reserve Battery Level: 5%/7%
Reserve Battery Action: N/A
If I leave the netbook on battery and go to sleep/go out/whatever, when I come back it will be off. After plugging it in and powering it on. It will say it is resuming windows, and then I get the "windows has recovered from unexpected shutdown" after Windows is started. I'm not having any problems with Windows, but this message is annoying. Theoretically when the battery hits 5% remaining, windows will gracefully hibernate and I can resume it without any problems.

I am running a 3 year old Sony Vaio, Win7 Sp1, home edition and recently it has been shutting down randomly (not restarting) when I am running games (99% of the time I am on the laptop is when I am running games So I cannot say if this shut-down issue will or will not occur if I just kept the system idle). I have never had this problem until a few days ago when I experienced a BSOD (which happened to me before so I thought it was no big deal), and from that point my laptop began to shut down randomly (just crashes, no BSOD), sometimes within a few minutes, sometimes after a few hours of use.
"WhoCrashed" failed to generate any reports (I ran the crash test, it works fine) and after checking my computers event viewer, there was multiple occurrences of the "event 41 Kernel, Windows was rebooted after an unexpected shutdown" critical error. I browsed the internet looking for possible causes of this, and have taken the following actions:
1. Sending in my laptop for repairs (new thermal paste and heatsink cleaning), the core temp when running games tops out around 60-65C which is nowhere near the level needed for a overheat shutdown
2. Testing my GPU temp, (around 50-60C) once again no where near the level needed for overheat (I am running a Nvidia Geforce GT 330M with updated drivers)
3. Multiple Chkdsks
4. Checked system, power, performance, battery etc with Vaio Care
5. Tested it unplugged and plugged on battery
6. Toning down my power plan's maximum processor usage, changing system cooling policy
7. Reinstalling service pack
8. Cleaning out registry with CCleaner
9. Planning on doing a memory test
After all this, the problem still occurs. I am not sure if it is a hardware problem or something else I am probably going to do a repair install on WIN7 to see if that will fix anything.

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium with Service Pack 1 with 4 gig RAM and 64 bit system. When I restart my computer, it tends to take it around 5 to 10 minutes to actually shut down. It sits at the screen saying shutting down, and eventually does but when it starts up, it also tends to take a bit longer than normal and then windows browser gives me an error and restarts itself and then tells me that there was an unexpected shutdown. I've tried glancing for issues to no avail. I've also noticed that sometimes my USB ports stop recognizing devices but usually comes back upon restart. I've tried updating drivers but everything seems to be up to date from what I've seen. I use McAfee antivirus software which hasn't picked up any viruses as well.

I'm hoping someone could give me some pointers on how to go about investigating my PC switching itself off after approximately 10 minutes of inactivity (not sleeping, as Windows is configured to do after 30 mins). The PC is used as a media centre with xbmc running as the frontend. If I leave the computer unattended whilst in XBMC. the computer will switch off after approximately 10 mins. I haven't (yet) checked if it happens outside of XBMC, though I suspect it will. The eventviewer shows: The previous system shutdown at <time> on <date> was unexpected. But nothing else of significance. The reason I'm convinced this is software related is because the shutdown always occurs around about 10 mins after leaving the PC alone, with no input. I havent timed it precisely, but will do so when I next get a chance. If I am using the PC in any way, or watching a film, it does *not* shutdown. There are no errors apart from that in the eventviewer log - i.e. no boot menu when you power back on to recommend safe mode, no message on starting windows to say it shutdown unexpectedly. I havent actually observed the shutdown myself yet, so Im not sure if there is a bluescreen or not.

I have a pc with following spec:
Windows Home 7 64 bit
Packard Bell ixtreme M5722
Intel(R)Core(TM)2 Quad CPU
RAM 6GB
160GB HD
It is a factory refurb ex-demo which came with windows 7 installed.I originally got the machine in January with a 1TB HD plus NVidia GeForce graphics card.Using with USB wired mouse, wireless keyboard. All was well for 10 days or so until it started having unexpected shutdowns. These increased to become full BSOD, occurring once or 2x daily. These events sometimes occur without warning although sometimes the mouse/keyboard goes sticky for up to an hour before problems occur. The machine has been back to supplier where it failed to display any problems.I have tried it without graphics card, tried disconnecting speakers, using with/without surge protected adaptors, tried different mouse/keyboard (wired and wireless).
Finally I tried my 1TB HD in another PC (same model as mine).Complete lockup of keyboard/ mouse.Reinstalled on 160GB HD (all that was available to test) in the alternative PC, refused to work with wireless keyboard and mouse, ran fine for a week with USB wired devices. Swapped back to my original PC keeping 160GB HD, ran 2 days ok, now back to same BSOD message.
