Windows 7 Intermittent Internet Loss?
May 3, 2011
Verizon Fios, Actiontec Router. Windows XP machines (wired) (2) never any internet loss whatsoever. Running the wireless from the Actiontec and also a Linksys that is on one of the ports. (distance issues) The Linksys always syncs up and both wireless systems work 100% all the time with either XP or Win 7 laptops.
Here's the issue: two wired desktops running Win 7 have intermittent internet drops. One is older, one brand new fresh out of the box. Turned off the power saver NIC card function on both, WOL disabled. That's not the problem because the internet losses occur sometimes after the machine is on for a few minutes, the PC does not sit long enough to go into power saver anyway. There's no rhyme or reason as they say when the loss will occur. Sometimes this will not happen for a day or more, other times it can happen after using the machine for just a few minutes. One thing I have been trying is to disable IPV6 then I can get the internet back, othertimes re-enable it to get the net back. Go figure. Again, disabling it will not fix the problem, however switching it on/off will. Disabling and re-enabling the NIC will only fix it sometimes, most instances that does nothing. There are different types of NIC cards in the machines, one uses a Realtec on board, the other uses Nvidea on board and a plug in NIC (brand?) all NIC cards/board performs the same. Also, when they DO work, if I let them boot for a while, usually they will be fine, but that's looking at a 10-15 minute boot up. (doesn't take an excessive time for actual boot-up but I mean just leave it alone for 10-15 min) The Actiontec has the most current update version, and is about two years old. Somehow these machines lose the internet portion but not the network portion. Such an annoying problem, even more so when I added a brand new machine and get the same issues. I would be willing to bet that if I ran them wireless there would be no issue, but that's going to slow down the dl/ul speeds that I get with a wired connection.

I have a problem where my Internet connection will drop at least once a day. I have Windows 7 Business x64. It will first simply stop working, as in it looks like it's connected, it still has a public IP but I can't ping out and no browsers work, nor any games etc (you get the picture). If I try release/renew it'll either hang or give me a 169-address. To fix it I have to reboot my computer and it starts working again.
I have an Asus P5KC motherboard using the Windows 7 Windows Update drivers, and it's been like this pretty much since the start. I've turned off all power saving modes everywhere I could find and any sort of hibernation settings, and still it'll cut off almost always once a day. (I have a VNC server so I can log on from work, so I can tell when it 'crashes'.)
What's funny is that it often doesn't happen when I'm on the computer, it's mainly when I've been gone for a bit. That's not to say it hasn't happened when I've been at it, it's just more uncommon.
It's setup to a switch which in turn is connected to my modem. What's telling me that it isn't neither the modem nor the switch that has the problem is the fact that I have a mediastation which doubles as a webserver also connected to the router and it has never once cut out. I've tried switching the ports on the switch (ha-ha) to no avail.
I've been thinking about installing the Vista x64 drivers from Asus but I'm leery of trying because I don't know how similar the two systems are.
Is this a general issue with this board? I'm getting really sick of this problem. Hope somebody can help.
Also, I'm sorry for not posting this in the megathread we apparently have but I couldn't bear slogging through 43 pages of white noise and hope that my post wasn't lost at the tail end of it. There are so many issues being handled in there that I can't make heads or tails of who has the same problem.

Every since I connected a Windows 7 (64) laptop to our network, internet has become intermittent to other users. There seems to be a conflict of some kind in our LAN. DHCP is on in our ISP Router/Modem. And I haven't seen any IP conflict so far.

I am having a nightmare with my windows 7 64 bit home edition. It is running extremely slowly. I have lost the internet connection and the windows firewall has turned off and cannot be turned back on. Whenever I boot up i get the message "failed to connect to a windows server" The event viewer log is also unavailable. I have established that my internet is working on other machines. I have also attempted to reset winsock in safe mood. However this has not worked.I've had the system for about 9 months with no major problems. I have McAfee and have run windows defender and adaware so I am pretty sure it's not malware.

just upgraded my vista 64-bit install to win7 home prem 64-bit.
everything has been working great except for an internet/network issue. at random times, all of a sudden the icon in the tray gets that yellow exclamation point over it and says there's a network issue and no internet available. it's like that until i disable and re-enable the network adapter. there are other systems on the wired router and they're still working fine (vista and xp machines).
the strange thing is it *seems* to only do it when i start doing more than one thing at the same time. i.e. trying to watch Internet while playing an online game. or, downloading a pdf while streaming music. all of a sudden, all internet goes down (other computers still working fine though). once i reset the adapter, all is well.
any ideas here?

Until recently I ran windows xp. I shared a built in wall Ethernet jack with another desktop. I used my router (Linksys Befsr41) as a switch by disabling dhcp and connecting the wall ethernet and the two computers to the Lan ports on the router. The other desktop until recently was also running windows xp, but was upgraded and is now an apple imac running os x lion. My internet briefly stopped working but I was able to reset my router and get my internet running again. I then needed to reformat my build and installed windows 7 ultimate 32 bit. I cant quite pinpoint my problem. If I connect straight to the wall ethernet jack i have internet access. However if i use my router as a switch to get internet for both my pc and the apple imac, I will not have internet access. Sometimes the internet does indeed come back on in this circumstance, only to get disconnected again shortly. I am not sure who to blame because the router worked fine when spliiting ethernet for xp machines, and I have internet access when running straight from the wall to my pc

I had a power loss while running on battery (it still showed power left, but suddenly shut down anyway) and when I restart, it reports that the Windows is not activated and Window is not genuine and system might be a victim of "counterfeiting."
Is this a virus (I have MSE on continuously and about once a week scan with Malwarebytes)? I have run 'sfc /scannow' with filtered output ('findstr /c: "[SR]" c:.....logsCBSCBS.log" and it appears as usual.
How can I lose my Windows activation?

The problem I've been experiencing is my local area connection "network" switching... if that makes sense. What seems to be happening is when i connect my desktop pc (via ethernet) and laptops (via wireless) to the new modem/router ( either netgear DGN2200 OR linksys WAG160n), the network and sharing center will say im connected to network 2 and only provide internet access to my desktop while the laptops have no internet acess, and after numerous disabling and enabling the wireless on the laptops and doing power cycles on the modem/router, internet access is granted on the laptops... then however, no internet access on the desktop (happens on both modem/routers).
Then by some act of god, there is internet connection on desktop and laptop, and when I check the network and sharing center, it would say I am connected to network 4, but thats not all, because when I turn my pc off overnight for when i sleep, and turn it back on, I'd still be connected to network 4 and have no internet access on desktop or laptop and what I mentioned above happens again and I'd go through all the general trouble shooting stuff and randomly it would work again. After speaking to support from both Netgear and cisco... I think the problem might be with my network card?

For the past year or so I've been using a telstra broadband manager USB to connect to the internet, now all of a sudden I am getting no internet access, not just from the broadband manager but from other networks aswell. I have tried my phones hotspot, other USB's and WiFi's to none of them working. It would start up and work for about 15 seconds, and then internet access would just cut out completely. I have AVG Internet Security 2012 installed and I have tried disabling the firewall (Windows firewall also) and yet it still doesn't work.

Two days ago I lost internet connectivity suddenly on my desktop (Dell XPS 630i, onboard Nvidia network controller, running windows 7 Home Premium 64bit) and have been unable to restore it. As my laptop (winXP sp3) can still connect to the internet and the router settings have not been changed (Dlink DGL4500), I'm making the assuption that my networking problem resides on my desktop alone. the network adapter gives me a 'limited connectivity' symbol and refuses to connect to my network, even though the router acknowledges the desktop's wired connection. The troubleshooting diagnostic sometimes finds nothing, sometimes finds that the computer is not obtaining a proper IP, and sometimes claims the problem is the router. I've also disabled windows firewall. Throughout this whole process I have been getting a 'Drive Power State Failure' BSOD during restarts (about once every four or five restarts, not consistently).
At first I was unable to replace the drivers or uninstall the adapter through device manager. After reinstalling the drivers using the Nforce 650SLI drivers on their website, I was able to do this, but this did not solve the problem. I also did a windows restore to before the problem occured, also with no luck. I've been through the event log and there are numerous code 5007 errors, which just tell me that the adapter timed out during an operation. I've also read through some forums online and tried several solutions including adding a DhcpConnBcastFlagToggle line into the registry: SOLVED: Network Icon Exclamation: No Internet

My computer is relatively recent only being bought back around Feb/March. For the past month the machine has been crashing and when I log back in I need to restart my router in order to get my internet connection back. The strange thing is that other computers connected to the same router also lose their connection shortly after the BSOD on my machine (both machines have wired connections). I am using the same OEM copy of Win 7 Professional 64 bit that was installed when I bought the machine.I have tried updating the drivers on the network card but that does not seem to help. I also tried looked at the dumps with WinDbg to see if I could find a specific driver that was playing up. I also turned on the driver verification a couple of times to see if I could find a driver that was suspect -- that caused almost immediate crashes but I could not get to the bottom of what was causing it but it could make it happen by starting up Mumble. The BSODs have so far seemed to happen when I am playing a game, using something like Mumble, or watching a stream.

This morning (Wednesday) my desktop computer brought in automaticly Tuesdays (26/04/11) set of patches, 6 in total for my machine. I turned the computer of for as I headed of to work and they installed on the shutdown. On returning from work the updates continued the install procedure on loading, but stuck at 0% for over 20mins. I decided to check the install time for this stage on my laptop 7pro x86 and it wizzed through in a few moments (laptop is a good 6yrs old). I figured the desktop was stuck and hit reset, every time it would get stuck at 0% on configuring the updates. Booted into safemode and ran system restore to the morning. Computer now loads up ok but will not connect to the internet. It would appear that its not getting an IP from the router.
What i've tried so far:After running system restore I've removed the Anti virus (Eset Smart Security). Tried setting manual ip address and ping router and laptop, also tried ping from laptop to desktop, both ways destination unreachable. reinstalled network drivers, same fault occurs. Reset winsock (netsh winsock reset catalog), rebooted after. reset TCP/IP (netsh int ip reset c:esetlog.txt), reported ok, rebooted same fault. ran sfc /scannow, reports system file integrity ok.Unchecked IPv6, same issue occurs. Checked network cables on laptop, ok.

I have a desktop with wireless access thourgh a USB wireless card (SMCWUSB-G)
I don't know what else to do. I have tried everything. I have searched around in forums, asked people. I need an internet expert.
I have a 20Mb internet plan but after swtiching from Windows 7 32-bit to Windows 7 64-bit i dont get more than 2Mb, normally only 1Mb. Plus now my signal is weaker, i'm only getting 2 bars out of five when i used to get 3 or 4.
My download speeds don't get passed 30kb/s and i lose connection all the time now. I can say its not the distance from the router. Here is what i have tried to solve it:
- DOS command: "netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled"
- TCPOptizmier: gotten only worse and i think it was when my signal started to get weaker.
- Disaled IPv6 in internet options
- Disabled QoS

I have a compaq presario v2000. For the most part, my laptop screen says nothing like 'windows is non genuine', but there are some times when it does. The funny thing is , when I go to start, right click 'computer', click properties and see the computer information screen, the bottom part of that screen eventually says windows is activated, and after that the 'windows is not genuine message on the desktop goes away to reappear at a later date, maybe two or three days later

I have an ideapad Y530 that is currently experiencing audio issues.I recently upgraded from Vista to 7 Ultimate and ever since the audio only works about 1 and 10 times. I have found many posts on the net with similar issues but nothing exatly like mine. All speakers have been enabled, audio driver updated and every type of trouble shooting tried.Basically i start the computer, get the Lenovo boot-up jingle, then no sound. But every ten starts, or so, the sound works perfectly? The only other strange thing i notice is that if i plug in speakers and put the volume on FULL i can hear sound ever so faintly.Feels like some sort of conflict but i cannot find one. Its as if Windows 7 loads the driver sometimes and not others, but if so why is the sound faint when i plug in speakers? Should i open the laptop to search for physical damage between the motherboard and speaker connections?

System Spec:64 bit- I built the machine August 2010, I have not reinstalled the OS since. Full Retail Version of Windows 7.I have been experiencing problems with this machine since about a month after I built it in August 2011. At first I would get a BSOD just every once in a while. I am at architecture school and I didn't have time to address the issue, so I just kept a diligent written log of every time I noticed it happening. I have included that as an attachment. You'll notice that there was not an obvious trigger - it would not crash as soon as I opened something, or as soon as I tried to use the sound card. It would happen both while I was working in Adobe Illustrator, and when I left my computer idle to go grab a cup of coffee or something like that. I have included all the dump files I have as attachments.Recently, however, Windows has had trouble resuming. I can't figure out exactly what is happening because it hasn't happened while I was at my computer yet. But, pretty much every time I return to my computer after a 10 minute absence, I come back to a black screen with a blinking white underscore in the top left corner. I think it has something to do with the machine going to sleep and having trouble resuming windows.
Another clue, which I've researched a little bit, is that I think I heard a single beep the other day. Granted, I'm in a studio with 50 other people and there are cellphones, headphones tons of computer and all kinds of noise, but I'm sure enough about what I heard to include it here. The forums I checked suggested this was a problem with the RAM.Here is a list of the components from the NewEgg invoice:

In the old place my PC was upstairs but had an ethernet connection to the router downstairs. In the new place I have to run it on the wireless. I have got a 2/3 bar connection to the router, and can stream to the Xbox without a problem, for the most part. The problem occurs (and it's becoming more regular) when I turn both bits of kit on and the PC (in the media centre menu) says the Xbox is connected but the Xbox says no connection can be found. It then lists the normal helpful suggestions, and what I have to eventually do is unlink them and re build the connection. When that is back, it works fine, but turn them off and have to start all over again.

I have a Compaq Presario CQ60 307-SA laptop which is running Windows 7 Profession (32 bit) I recently tried to put it into hibernation but found that my laptop will no longer do so.
Hibernation had been working fine up until I upgraded my hard drive from a 160 GB 5400 RPM WD Elements Scorpio Blue to a 500 GB 7200 RPM WD Elements Scorpio Black hard drive. Ever since then I can't put my laptop into hibernation.
The menu option for Hibernation is displayed so it is enabled, however when I attempt to hibernate the laptop the screen goes blank (As if it was going to hibernate) but then after a few short seconds the screen flashes and then the login screen appears again prompting me to login into my user as if I had just booted up the machine
The only possible cause that I can think of is that I did a full system image of my old hard drive and used my Windows 7 disc to restore the image onto the new hard drive. Rather than re-installing my whole OS from scratch, so maybe the hibernation file/settings got bodged.

My desktop pc crashed, and after some investigation it turns out that the main hard drive is probably dead... So I thought I would install Windows 7 onto my portable terabyte. Anyway when I tried to install Windows 7 onto my hard drive, I realised 2 things:
- Windows will clear my TB HD when it installs.
and
- Windows cannot install onto a USB device.
I need to install windows 7 on my portable hard drive without removing any data on it. I have tried to partition my hard drive with easyus as a friend recomended, but it says I need to convert it to a logical, and I cant do that because it says something about clearing the HD.

Today some maintenance personnel were working on my bathroom in my apartment. I stepped out to take care of some errands while they worked. I put my computer into sleep mode (NOT hibernation - Actually sleep mode). When I got home, I realized that all of the clocks were flashing "12:00" and my computer was powered off. When I talked to the maintenance crew, they said that they had encountered a problem in the bathroom and caused a short. This, in turn, tripped the breaker that my computer room was on, which they then reset. This means that my computer, at minimum, experienced a hard power loss while running. It may or may not have experienced a surge (!), though it is on a surge protector. And the surge protector did not have its safety lights lit to indicate a surge.
Unfortunately, since using the computer I'm noticing a lot of oddities. I played some TF2 to unwind, and for the first time ever it crashed. My Video Card got stuck in "uplocked/3D" mode. Web browsing was slower than I'm used to, and overall it seemed like the computer picked up a lot of 'chugging' where it hadn't before. Is there some method to diagnose the general health and well being of my computer in windows? Are there tools beyond CHKDSK that I can run to locate problems that may have occurred as a result of a power surge? I'm concerned that the power loss damaged my components significantly, and I'm not sure how to diagnose the problem or determine if it's all in my head.
Here are my specs, if that's important:
Windows 7 Pro x64
i7 core 920 CPU
eVGA x58 mobo
eVGA GTX 275 Video Card (197.13 drivers)
Corsair 850 W PSU

finally getting around to my first win 7 install on my new 120 gb mushkin chronos deluxe.I am using tweakhounds win 7 install guide found here: TweakHound - Installing Windows 7 particullary, I am trying to avoid the 100 mb loss:
Quote: Code: *Avoiding the 200MB partition: Folks have discovered that on an unpartitioned drive Windows 7 will create a 200MB system partition. This is easily avoided by creating a partition before attempting to install Windows 7 (see above). (for some this partition will be 100MB)**Exception for SSD drives to avoid the 200MB partition and partition / format the drive.Partitioning is a little different for SSD (Solid State Drives). This is because of something called NTFS partition alignment. Basically this refers to where on the drive the partition starts. Vista and 7 will create a single partition optimally for SSD's. XP and most program boot disks will not. If possible you should partition the disk under an already installed Windows 7 or Windows Vista machine and then proceed with the usual installation steps. If not then this is the way to do it:
Windows 7 Installation Advanced Drive Formatting
1 - Boot up from the Windows 7 installation disc.
2 - Choose Repair your computer.
3 - In the System Recovery Options screen, choose Use recovery tools... and click Next.
4 - Open the Command Prompt.
5 - Type diskpart and hit Enter.
6 - Type list disk . Find the disk you wish to install Windows 7 on. If you only have one disk then it will show as disk 0. If you have multiple disks find the drive you wish to install 7 on.
7 - Type select disk 0 (or use the number of the disk you wish to install Windows 7 on)(note - that is a zero)
8 - Type list partition. There shouldn't be any.
9 - Type create partition primary.
10- Type select partition 1.
11- Type active.
12- Type format quick.
13- When finished reboot and begin your installation.
( DiskPart Command-Line Options ) After reboot, the ssd shows as having 100 mb used and is listed as a system drive.

My computer was turned off during the update process and I am getting the blue screen. After launching the start-up repair I am told the problem cannot be solved although there is a patch preventing the system from starting. My registry files precede the date the problem occurred, I have tried to restore but there is no restore point, I cannot start in safe mode. I have launched bootrec.exe and ran FixMbrFixBoot and also RebuildBcd and none have worked. I know I will probably have to go the long way around and pull the data from my disc and do a clean install but just wondered if any of you Techsperts had a quicker fix so I can spend the rest of my life in awe at your magnificence?
