Windows 7 Corrupted System Files / Windows Explorer Crashes

Nov 8, 2012

I (my wife) is running Windows 7 Home Premium (64). Windows explorer crashes when:

-Searching with more than 4 characters in the start menu
-Opening the Network and Sharing Center
-Various other times that seem unrelated

I have attempted:

-Startup repair X3 : it catches problems but doesn't repair them
-sfc /scannow command : also catches problems, and the CDA log shows all of the corrupted files.
-Copying the system32 files from a fresh windows install to fix the broken dll files while in another os : this didn't seem to have any affect
-System Restore doesn't have any images before the issue began
-Full system antivirus and malware scan and rootkit detection with no results showing (doesn't rule it out, but I used Norton commercial, Mbits, Lavasoft, and Kapersky online all in safemode, and some rootkit detectors)
-Repair Install : hangs when initiated
-Updating windows to SP1 : it seems the system attempted to update some time ago and failed or was interrupted. Now SP1 won't install, the updater hangs
-in an attempt to fix the windows update hanging issue, I tried:

-Installing the system update readiness tool (Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [September 2012] from Official Microsoft Download Center) : the update hangs too
-Installing the fix it program here (Fix the problem with Microsoft Windows Update that is not working) : didn't make a difference
-renaming the software center file as in this thread (Script or command to delete contents of Software Distribution folder?) and re-attempting to install sp1.

I (my wife) has some very expensive programs on her computer that we no longer have install discs for. She had them before we were married, but they seem to have been "lost in the move." We can probably work with each of the individual programs, but I'd sure like to look at other options that allow her to keep her file and program structure intact.

Windows Explorer Crashes With MP4 Files In Large Icons (thumbnails) View

Dec 2, 2010

Whenever I view a folder which contains .MP4 (H264) video files in large icon view (shows thumbnails), Windows 7's Explorer crashes. Explorer loads for a few seconds, the green progress bar shows up, and then boom!, Explorer crashes. The thumbnails are not shown before crashing.I tried setting Folder options to 'Always show icons, never thumbnails' (disables thumbnails) on the same folder with MP4 (H264) video files and Explorer doesn't crash if the MP4 thumbnails aren't shown. I tried testing in other folders containing other video formats (with 'Always show icons, never thumbnails' set to off) like .AVI/Xvid, without an MP4/H264 file, and Windows Explorer shows the thumbnails fine without crashing.

I have not currently experienced problems with other formats, only MP4/H264. The only media players that I have installed are KMPlayer and VLC Media Player which both do not install external codecs, AFAIK. The only external codec I have installed is CoreAVC, but I have been using CoreAVC for months (KMPlayer+CoreAVC is one of the first things I installed in Windows 7) without any problems (this issue just arose a few days ago).I am using Windows 7 Ultimate, 32 bit.

Windows Explorer Crashes And System Freezing After Video Card Upgrade?

May 24, 2011

I very recently graduated and as a congratulations, my brother-in-law gave me a brand new Nvidia 9800GTX for my computer. I was running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit when I installed it and I immediately saw a drastic increase in performance. However, when I turned my computer off for the night, I noticed that it would hang at the shut down screen and never actually turn off.Refusing to believe that the new card was at fault, and having next to nothing on my C partition after my most recent formatting, I decided to go ahead and reinstall Windows to hopefully fix the issue. This is where my other problems started in. Suddenly Windows Explorer was crashing whenever I tried to use my disk drive and my system would randomly lock up. After assuming my install went wrong, I tried reinstalling twice more and neither worked. Finally, I got fed up and reinstalled my 32-bit copy of Windows 7 Professional and it still didn't work. As of now I've removed the new card and put my old 9500GT back in to find that I'm not having a single problem with the 9500.

How To Repair System Files That Were Corrupted During Update

Sep 15, 2011

My computer was installing the latest updates for windows 7 professional 64 bit and the battery died during the shut down process, and now when I start the computer it will allow me to log in but when it hits the desktop it freezes up completely. I have tried using the system restore but somehow my restore points cant be found anywhere and when I tried using the system repair option on the installation cd it says it cant because the problem is unfixable. The error it says it has is in the boot sector and it says the error code is 0x45d, but when I ran it a second time it didn't say that. I really don't want to deal with pulling off all of my personal files and then installing a fresh copy of windows because that would be too much of a hassle, but if i have to i will.

Windows System Corrupted?

Dec 15, 2012

System:
AMD Phenom II x6 t1055
Biostar A770E3 / A78XAA3S-R03 v6.0
2x4GB Kingston pc3-10600 (1333Mhz), just new installed.
ATI HD5750 True Color
Windows 7 x32 & x64 Ultimate NL Retail

I had some issues after doing what an Anti Virus software asked me to do and register cleaning.Windows looked acting slow and some futures (both still) don't work.I have to mention that I had a bad memory that killed two slots on the main baord.Previously the Windows 7 x32 didn't start completally, it didn't get to the login screen. The mouse pointer was vissable and the screen was black.

I looked on the net for answers, but found non. So, I tried to expermimanted some F8 functions ad the MBR screen. I found one that did work, something for domein users. All the other options didn't work.I got it started (safe mode) and deleted the last month installed software.Did a chkdsk /F and restarted. [URL]I found one site with the command sfc /scannow to check the system files and fix them. After a while (not minutes as it says) I got the notification that not all system files could be fixed. It installed a log file ad WindowsLogCBS about 24MB.How to fix these errors?no reinstallation. I have software that came from GiveawayOfTheDay, the software can only be installed once.Or,After a reinstall, would it be possible to reinstall the software from the Old installation. Actually stupid to do, can have bugs too.

Is there a total Windows 7 x32/x64 repair disk that comes with the programs itseld and can check the net for information and can install and deinstall software for download?I forgot to burn the one that came with Windows 7.I downloaded a Repair disk, but it kept asking for Backup and Command prompt didn't work either.Guess, the DVD program did need those files on the Windows HDD installation too.Autoback up was disabled, don't know how. So, no backup at all. No restore points either.

Lots Of Windows 7 Files Have Been Corrupted Or Are Missing

Apr 15, 2011

I probably got overly ambitious with a disk cleanup utility and now several functions of windows 7 don't work. New updates don't install, other updates that I DID install are missing, I am unable to run certain games, and I can't run SFC /scannow.However virus scan updates appear to be fine. What is the best way to fix this? I have an old backup I did with Norton Ghost on disk but something is wrong with the second disk so I can't use to to reinstall the entire backup but I might be able to extract some old files if I knew which ones to extract. I am running Window Seven Home Premium. It is a legal copy. I got it directly from Microsoft. If I try to run SFC /scannow from Windows I cannot get it to show up or do anything. Its like I never did anything. If I try to run SFC /scannow from the boot CD using this command

sfc /scannow /offbootdir=f: /offwindir=f:windows

I get this error messge:

Windows Resource Protection Could not run the repair service IF I try to run the repair outlined here:[URL]I get an error saying Windows cannot find the file specified. My computer specs are

Windows Explorer Crashes

Apr 27, 2011

As described here: 'Microsoft is offering users running Windows 7 a fix designed to resolve issues related to Windows Explorer. According to the software giant, Windows Explorer can crash in certain scenarios, a glitch which also seems to be impacting Windows Server 2008 R2, not just Windows 7. It appears that the issue is not exactly new, since it affects the RTM versions of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, as well as the two operating systems after their first upgrade was released. Essentially, the release of Service Pack 1 doesn't seem to have resolved Windows Explorer crashes. "This issue usually occurs when you perform some operations that are related to the taskbar or to the Address bar," the Redmond company revealed.

Virus Corrupted Windows System Repair Tool

Oct 8, 2012

I have had the generic.win virus on my computer for a while now due to my anti virus program not being able to remove it. It has been causing internet browsing issues specifically with google and other search engines. However I believe that the virus has corrupted my "Windows repair tool" that is required to reformat my system. I start my computer and hold F8 to bring up the menu and select the repair computer option and it brings me to the menu where I can either "start windows normally" or run system repair tool.

When I try to run the system repair tool I know it is supposed to bring me to a menu to select language and what not and ultimately restore my computer. Unfortunately it just returns to the normal boot up and repair option over and over upon selecting the option. I just want a virus free computer. My system is a dell inspirion running 64 bit windows 7. I have backed up all the files.

All File Associations Corrupted For Windows 7 Account - System Restore?

Jan 20, 2013

Windows 7 Pro 64 SP1. He has 2 accounts on his PC (administrator, and 'user'). Both have admin privileges. When he logged in this morning using his user account, the file associations for all applications appear to have been corrupted. In his user account, all programs launch with the IE download manager which gives me an option to run or save. When 'run' is selected from IR download manager, a window quickly flashes on the screen and closes. I am unable to run any application including windows explorer, regedit, cmd, etc, including system restore.

He has Symantec Endpoint which also launched in IE download manager. My friend does not recall installing anything recently. I tried booting in safe mode and logging into the user account and the behavior is exactly the same. When I log in using the admin account (in regular mode) everything seems to be fine. The system restore option is available as are all the file associations. A Symantec scan using the admin account shows nothing other than a single tracking cookie. The only thing I can think of doing is a system restore from the admin account but thought I'd post this to the group to see if there was something else I should try first.

Windows Explorer Crashes Repeatedly After No Action

Mar 10, 2012

I'm running Windows 7 on a Toshiba laptop bought last year. My windows explorer is currently stuck in a permanent state of crashing every 3 seconds. I've tried restarting, shutting down, running virus checks and removing all suspicious adware, removing cookies, and calling tech support. They said it was a problem with a corrupted something to do with the explorer file. It started by crashing once or twice whenever I viewed a particular folder on my desktop (all it had was some video files), and now it crashes when I'm not doing anything. Immediately crashes after reset. I'm operating in safe mode now and the tech guy said the problem is fixable from my end, but wouldn't tell me how to do it unless I gave him $160. And I don't have a credit card

If this helps, the tech guy was remotely controlling my computer and he's left open Services where he was looking at Computer Browser and he said he could fix it in one or two steps from there. The problem with the browser crash was cited as

"The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start because of the following error: The dependency service or group failed to start."

Cannot Modify Mkv File / Windows 7 Explorer Crashes?

Jan 16, 2012

Like many people out there I'm having problems renaming, deleting, moving, copying, and playing mkv files. If I attempt to do one of the above tasks, windows explorer will crash and I have to restart my computer. I ran a cmd scannow and there indeed was a problem with my cbs log. However, that has since been repaired yet the mkv problem persists. I've also adjusted my viewing options to only show details in the folder, hoping that perhaps it was the thumbnail generator that was to blame. This also did not work. The mkv file itself doesn't appear to be corrupted. I've been able to successfully transfer some files to an external hard drive. I've been able to play these files no problem on my work computer running windows xp.

I have a feeling it's somehow tied to divX. I've attempted to uninstall the program several times using the normal process from the control panel, once with ccleaner, and currently attempting a forced uninstall with a trial version of revo uninstaller pro. None of these has so far worked. Anyone have any bright ideas, save for reinstalling my OS? Also, please keep your suggestions in layman's termsI'm by no stretch well versed in computers.

Windows 7 Completely Freezes - Explorer Crashes

Apr 1, 2012

Since today, I've been having random freezes in Windows 7. When it freezes, all I can do is move the mouse cursor, windows explorer happens to be crashing at that point & there is no way for me to ctrl-alt-delete or ctrl-shift-escape myself out of the situation. I have to restart the PC only to be confronted with the problem again shortly after. These freezes happen at very random times. For example when I opened up the start menu and typed "cmd" and pressed enter, it froze.

Or just when I simply started up my PC and when my first action was pressing "Cancel" in an application window, it froze as well. It also froze just opening the start menu & froze opening my User (Tom) folder. I decided that it might be because of some update or one of the applications I've installed since today, so I decided to do a system restore to yesterday, which removed those applications. This however, did not fix the random freezes. I also checked my PC component temperatures in the ASUS BIOS, they happen to be fine. I'm on the PC right now, it runs fine in safe-mode.

These are my specs:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40GHz, 3411 MHz, 4 core(s), 8 logic processor(s)

Stuck On Starting Windows - Repair Shows System Volume On Disk Corrupted

Oct 19, 2011

I have had Win 7 installed for a while now).

Here is a summary of my problem:
1) My computer recently got stuck on the "Starting Windows Screen." So I manually held the power button to reboot.
2) On reboot, it said there was a need to run a startup repair, which I did. Everything checked fine, except for the last one which said "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted," which it claimed to have successfully fixed.
3) After rebooting from repair, the system gets stuck on "Starting Windows Screen" for a good 10-15 minutes, after which it runs a registry check. After it completes that I get hopeful -- but the screen then gets stuck on an all black screen with just the mouse cursor and nothing more.
4) Additional note: Attempting to start the computer on "safe mode" leads safe mode startup to become stalled on "DRIVERSCLASSPNP.SYS"
5) The lastest attempt to repair yielded this message: "Startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically.
