View 3 RepliesI had an F/drive failure. Got the files recovered and transfered to a backup drive, installed a new F/ drive and as I began re-installing program files, discovered I couldn't use Explorer right-click to copy data files to a different directory. I tried the NirSof shexview program to disable all context menu items, no joy, even in safe mode. I made a crashdmp file, but don't know how to open or read it. Per other threads, I've uploaded that to skydrive.
View 1 Replies View RelatedLike many people out there I'm having problems renaming, deleting, moving, copying, and playing mkv files. If I attempt to do one of the above tasks, windows explorer will crash and I have to restart my computer. I ran a cmd scannow and there indeed was a problem with my cbs log. However, that has since been repaired yet the mkv problem persists. I've also adjusted my viewing options to only show details in the folder, hoping that perhaps it was the thumbnail generator that was to blame. This also did not work. The mkv file itself doesn't appear to be corrupted. I've been able to successfully transfer some files to an external hard drive. I've been able to play these files no problem on my work computer running windows xp.
I have a feeling it's somehow tied to divX. I've attempted to uninstall the program several times using the normal process from the control panel, once with ccleaner, and currently attempting a forced uninstall with a trial version of revo uninstaller pro. None of these has so far worked. Anyone have any bright ideas, save for reinstalling my OS? Also, please keep your suggestions in layman's termsI'm by no stretch well versed in computers.
basically (I'll try to be descriptive), I have an Excel file (extension xlsm) on my USB and I right click it, send to --> desktop (create shortcut). I see the shortcut. I right click and attempt to rename it with a different file extension, but the 'Rename' box doesn't show up like I believe it should and the file name changes without the warning. I need to do this for the shortcut I've created, not the file on the USB.I have 'Hide extensions for known file types' unchecked and 'Display the full path in the title bar' checked, as I believe they should be.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been having some frustrating issues with Windows Explorer (on Windows 7), and I've pinpointed the cause to one stubborn wmv file on my external hard drive.Whenever Explorer accesses the location of this wmv file (unfortunately the root directory), the green bar at the top starts slowly running, presumably trying to load the thumbnail of that wmv file. This wreaks havoc everywhere, as any other folders I navigate to then have missing thumbnails that will not load... and when I go to "Computer", it's completely empty and the green bar atop runs indefinitely, but never makes any progress... only heating my computer frustratingly.Furthermore, when I restart explorer, the error "the remove procedure call failed" shows. Logging off or pressing Ctrl+N in explorer have provided temporary solutions so far.
View 1 Replies View Relatedif I open a folder and r/click any file (to send it to another disk), I get a message saying that Explorer has stopped working and then it is restarting. This happens every time I try this. It restarts OK every time but never tells me why it crashed. When I go to do a System restore, it cannot complete the restore as it says a file cannot be accessed and that maybe an Anti-virus is running. I have disabled A/V and Firewall, both in Norton Internet Security which I only installed yesterday. All was working OK until later today, when I noticed that Windows 7 had installed 3 critical updates and I'm thinking that one or both are the cause? These were KB973924 x 2 and KB972696.
View 9 Replies View RelatedUsually, when you create/rename/delete a file/folder in the directory in Windows Explorer, it will add/renamed/remove automatically without refreshing. However, I have this issue where if you do any of the above, it doesn't refresh until you press F5. I tried to see if its a driver issue by booting into Safe Mode but it didn't work in there.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI tried to save a file and got an error on saving it, so I quit the program. The file appears as if it was never saved and doesn't show up in directory listing (GUI or cmd.exe).
However, if I try to rename any other file to that filename, it says "Cannot rename file, because file exists" and appends a number to the end. I cannot remove the number. This happens both in the GUI and cmd.exe as well.
So, basically cmd.exe del says the file does not exist, but ren says a duplicate file name exists....
I have no idea how to delete that "ghost" of a file so I can actually use the filename. I checked folder options and it's not a hidden file or anything like that - it just (doesn't) exist, but it does?
Is there a way to rename or create new sorting option with custom text ?there is a lot of categories, however i need to have my own custom labeled field then in the Detail view panel, by default, in the small size, there are these fields ready to edit:
- tags
- categories
- content status
the easiest way would be if i could rename those to my needs so it stays easily editable for the user?
I have a bunch of files/folders that were recovered from a failed disk drive. Some 80% of the files are good but many are named with characters outside the standard ANSI set. I am unable to rename the files or delete them using standard Windows commands.

I'm using Windows 7.
Since 2 days, in a certain folder, I cant rename, move or delete folders or files. Now, it has spread to my desktop as well. If I rename a folder, even a new folder, the name changes ''magically'' within seconds to restore to its previous name. If I move the folder or file, it comes back and if I delete it, it restores. I tried to make a system restore, even format (!), the problem persists. I use this folder to tag and rename my new mp3s so I have to be able to 1) rename, 2) move the folders the files and folders in it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently found I could not rename an MS Word file selected in Windows Explorer while the Preview Pane was "on". Apparently, Windows opens a Winword process to display the file and Windows considers the file "open". With Preview Pane "off", the Winword process quits and the file can then be renamed. Is this a "feature" of Windows or a bug that Microsoft can / should fix?
View 1 Replies View RelatedHaving difficulty with a homegroup and file sharing: one desktop PC with the family's main documents (which are on a separate drive to the system) and two laptops which need to access those documents. I've got them all seeing each other, and they can see the folders in the drive, but when I try to add files or rename files, it tells me that I need permission. I've gone through the advance settings to make sure the correct permission is selected, they all have the same workgroup name and different computer names. Sharing the printer attached to the desktop is fine.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI require a batch file or free utility that i can redistribute from my web site to other users, (gamers) that will copy the contents of a directory inside their game to a new location and re-name the directory at the same time. Something like this; Copy "GenesisVehicleruck diesel4tonbaker"to "GenesisVehicleruckdiesel4tonbutcher".The batch file needs to be run without the need for a command line box being opened, that is, if the user can double click on it or run it with a 'right click' that would be great. Problem there is, I maybe need an exe file not a batch file. The other part of the problem is that the folder to be copied may or may not be in the same location on every PC that runs the file. It may be the case that the 4tonbaker folder is on; [code] and I require the end user to have no need to know, just for the directory to be copied and renamed when and where it is found. If possible I then want the batch file to perform a second task. I want to distribute a folder, lets say it is 4tonbutcher and in that folder there are files lets say doc1.txt, doc2.txt and doc3.txt.On any given users PC 4tonbaker has these same named files but the content is different to the ones in my folder 4tonbutcher, I want to update the newly created folder, 4tonbutcher with the new txt files I distribute.
So, User downloads a folder called 4tonbutcher from my site.Batch file copies and renames a folder from a location on the users PC, "Genesis Vehiclesruckdiesel4tonbaker" to "Genesis Vehiclesruckdiesel4tonbutcher".Batch file copies doc1.txt, doc2.txt and doc3.txt from the downloaded folder to the newly created folder 4tonbutcher.
As described here: 'Microsoft is offering users running Windows 7 a fix designed to resolve issues related to Windows Explorer. According to the software giant, Windows Explorer can crash in certain scenarios, a glitch which also seems to be impacting Windows Server 2008 R2, not just Windows 7. It appears that the issue is not exactly new, since it affects the RTM versions of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2, as well as the two operating systems after their first upgrade was released. Essentially, the release of Service Pack 1 doesn't seem to have resolved Windows Explorer crashes. "This issue usually occurs when you perform some operations that are related to the taskbar or to the Address bar," the Redmond company revealed.

I'm running Windows 7 on a Toshiba laptop bought last year. My windows explorer is currently stuck in a permanent state of crashing every 3 seconds. I've tried restarting, shutting down, running virus checks and removing all suspicious adware, removing cookies, and calling tech support. They said it was a problem with a corrupted something to do with the explorer file. It started by crashing once or twice whenever I viewed a particular folder on my desktop (all it had was some video files), and now it crashes when I'm not doing anything. Immediately crashes after reset. I'm operating in safe mode now and the tech guy said the problem is fixable from my end, but wouldn't tell me how to do it unless I gave him $160. And I don't have a credit card
If this helps, the tech guy was remotely controlling my computer and he's left open Services where he was looking at Computer Browser and he said he could fix it in one or two steps from there. The problem with the browser crash was cited as
"The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start because of the following error: The dependency service or group failed to start."
When I right-click a drive and select 'properties' in Windows Explorer, it crashes. It doesn't matter what the drive is (flash, external, internal)..

Around 15 seconds after booting into Windows, a window pops up 'windows explorer has stopped working..windows is checking for a solution to the problem...'
After a couple of seconds, a window pops up saying Windows Explorer is starting, and then the previous windows pops up again.
I can't access any other programs when this happens. I've tried running in safe mode, and this issue doesn't come up. If done checkdisk, but this hasn't resolved the issue.
