I recently have been trying to set up some default programs for certain file types to open in. When I try to choose a program in the 'Open with...' dialogue box, I am unable to select a new program from the default list. The program I need isn't in that list, but I can't add to the list or choose a different program when I choose to browse for a new program.

When I go into the jetAudio preferences, and check all file types, it doesn't work properly, I'm guessing it's due to the fact that Windows 7 is still Beta.

I'm desperately trying to change the sidebar gadget to open websites by default with Mozilla Firefox (in particular, the "Ask LEO" gadget).
Firefox is my default browser. If I double-click on a .url file saved on my system, it correctly opens Firefox, and so does clicking a link in MS Outlook. Again, Firefox is default, but that's not my problem.
Somewhere I found the advice to change the "Set program access and computer defaults" settings. So I tried, but every time I change something there, it doesn't keep the setting. I click on Custom => Default Web Browser => Mozilla Firefox, click OK, get some flashing on desktop, but next time I get there it's set back to "Use current browser" again.
Anyone got the same problem? I'm using the 7100 (x86) build, but a friend of mine tried the same on the final build (x64) and he got the same problem. It's reverting all the time. Re-installed Firefox, restarted, changed/tried/reset everything I can imagine.
Edit: It seems the problem is a Javascript-call "window.open" in the "Ask LEO" gadget. Someone knows why this call opens IE and every other call doesn't? And is there a workaround?
Edit2: With a dirty hack I solved the problem. Edited the gadget and replaced "window.open" by "System.Shell.execute". Still - I'd like to know why a) I can't change the default programs setting and b) why window.open ignores my default browser configuration.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI recently had to reinstall windows 7 on my laptop as it randomly decided not to boot up. I had a backup of my files saved onto a partition on my laptop but it won't let me restore them for some reason.
I can access the partition from the computer tab and I see the backup there. When I click on it it asks me if I want to 'restore files from this backup', but when accept there are no backups listed.
I originally tried to repair my windows 7 when I had to reinstall it but it came up with a message saying that there were no backups to restore!
Is it possible to hack that button so you could, say, launch a special "locking" program instead of loggoff, shutdown, or any of the other options?

Scenario:
I have a folder with 200 audio files of various formats. I want to select only the .OGG files whose filenames start with "A".
On XP:
I would sort by filename, select all the "A" files, re-sort by file type, using CTRL and the mouse, I would then deselect non-OGG files.
When I try this on Win 7 my selections are cleared when I re-sort.s there a setting somewhere that I need to change?
I cannot add a .eml extension to Default Programs so I can associate a program to go with it. The .eml extension does show in the Indexing list, but not in the Default Programs list. How it can be added to the Default Programs, and if so how can I do it and would I associate Windows Live Mail with it??? I have missed quite a few mails because of this problem.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI noticed this a few days after having to restore my drive from a True Image backup.Running Win 7 Professional.I currently have 5 "recent" programs listed in my Start Menu (not pinned). I have Properties set to show 15 recent programs. When I run a program from the Start Menu (not the "recent programs," but the full list) or from Explorer (navigate to program and double-click the exe file), the program does not get added to the list. The only recently run programs being added are ones I run from Desktop shortcuts. I know this is not normal behavior; my laptop, also running Win 7 Professional, adds recent programs regardless of how they're launched.

It's as if he created a whole new profile, so now I can't run certain programs even though they appear on the Program list.Rather that wrestle with a fix, easier to reinstall the software.The problem is that a directory that was once visible to me previously that contained 5gb of files is no longer visible. Whenever I add a network printer I always make sure the "List in the Directory" (meaning Active Directory) is checked under the sharing tab in the properties of each printer. On Windows XP machines I can go through the add printer wizard and it finds all printers in the domain.On windows 7 professional clients when I got to Add Printer then select "Add a Network, Wireless, or Bluetooth printer" it does not find any network printers from my file server. I have the file and print sharing enabled on the Windows 7 clients and the File Server.
