To Perform A Windows Repair
May 9, 2011
Is there an actual way to perform a Windows "Repair" using the Windows installation disc similar to how it was done with previous iterations of Windows? I've tried some of the things suggested here (and elsewhere) but they just do not work correctly. I do not want to completely reload Windows.

My father-in-laws new computer (2 weeks old) a Dell Inspiron running Wundows 7 cannot perform any task, even System Restore. When I attempt to open Firefox or any other program it defaults to 'Open With' (usually Adobe 9). He is NOT computer literate and I am sure he has inadvertently downloaded a virus, or perhaps the Trojan he had on his old computer was trasferred to the new one by way of the USB for his wireless mouse.

I am sure this has been asked before, but I need to know if I get the upgrade disk and for whatever reason I have to do a clean install again, will the upgrade disk do that or will I have to load Windows XP back on then use the upgrade disk from there?

I am pretty sure that a virus cause this, right before my computer shut down on it's own my anti virus popped up and said that a Trojan was found but I didn't have to do anything. Then the computer shut down and when it restartrd started to load files and then go into startup repair, only it couldn't fix it. I tried a restore, but again it said that the startup files wern't there. I just quickly scanned the diagnostic details and noticed something that said "boot critical file C:CI.dll is corrupt".

I know how to perform a System Image, but now can't do so. I am using a Seagate Expansion External hard drive. Somewhere along the line there was a glitch and a red X (disconned) appeared on the drive icon in back up. I tried the same drive in an identical Windows 7 computer. Now I have red X's on both computers. The drive is fine, wiped and formatted, and the computer recognizes it. Still the red X on both computers. I can't get it off. The "start back up" tab is grayed out.

I have an Acer Aspire 5542-5462 laptop (◦CPU/Ram: 2.2 GHz / 3838 MB) w/ Windows 7 and the product details indicates I have four 2.0 USB ports (2 on the right side, 2 on the left). Today I connected my 1TB external "SimpleDrive" hard drive in order to do a backup which I'd done previously but my last one was afew months ago and this time got the same "This Device Can Perform Faster - Your USB Mass Storage Device can perform faster if plugged into a hi-speed port" message as others have. This is the first time I've received this message.Below that is a window with the heading "The hubs shown in BOLD type have free ports that can support the HI-SPEED USB device." and in the window it shows 2 separate "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller" and under each it shows a sub-heading "USB Root Hub #6 ports# in BOLD TYPE. Under the 1st USB Root Hub it reflects all 6 as being "Unused Port" and under the 2nd USB Root Hub it reflects all but the 5th of 6 as being "Unused Port" and the 5th as "USB Composite Device".I went online to find out about the USB "This Device Can Perform Faster" message and what it meant, along with solutions. I've tried the following:
-Went into the "Device Manager" window and the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" sub-menu which reflects, in order, 2 "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller", 4 "Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller", 2 "USB Composite Device", 1 "USB Mass Storage Device" and finally 6 "USB Root Hub".Per online instructions I right-clicked on each one and used the "Update Driver Software" #via a "Search online for updates" option# and received a "The best driver software for your device is already installed; Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date" for each and every one.
-Secondly per online suggestions I checked each USB Root Hub and all reflected as running at "full-speed" instead of the optimum "hi-speed" #which was indicated as to what should be showing if using a true 2.0 USB port#.So basically what I'm asking is if I have the current drivers already installed and my laptop's 4 USB ports are all supposed to support 2.0, then why aren't those USB Root Hubs running at HI-SPEED instead of the slower full-speed? Is there something I've missed? Or is there nothing wrong at all?

I just got two new harddrives for my birthday - one for my desktop, and one for my laptop. The desktop drive is 3 TB, which Windows won't let me use the entirety of...this is sort of a separate issue and not what brings me here, because I figure I can get around this by using another drive for the operating system and just use the 3 TB drive for storage. The drive I want to do this with is the 250 GB drive currently in my laptop, which will be replaced with the other new drive I got for it, 500 GB.
My plan is to make a backup of all the data on my 250 GB laptop drive to the 3 TB (backing up from my laptop to my desktop, connected by the homegroup). Then I'll put the 500 GB into my laptop, copy everything back to it, and use the 250 GB as the second drive in my desktop. *deep breath* it's tedious, but the best solution I came up with to make the migration possible.

Is there any way to perform multiple incremental backups for multiple drives with the Windows Backup utility? The reason I ask is because my experience with the Backup utility only allows me to schedule one type of backup. My issue is that I have six hard drives in my tower and the total disk space across them is more than any disk space that most external hard drives have. Having that said, I don't have a way to incrementally backup all of my drives. Is there any third party software out there that allows me to allow me to perform multiple incremental backups for my system? Can I do this with the Windows Backup utility a different way? The built-in program does a great job but it's limited with what I want to do.

I've got an ASUS K50IJ notebook, and lately, when I try to Save, Save As or Browse files on my computer, it freezes. This doesn't happen all the time; it's pretty unpredictable. In fact, the problem disappeared for a whole week before showing up again today.
The nature of each crash tends to vary. Sometimes the whole system locks up, and I have to forcibly shut it down with the power button. Other times, the window that triggered the problem is the only thing that freezes. Furthermore, sometimes the computer will unfreeze after several minutes, while in other cases my only option is to restart.

Though it was likely foolish of me to keep putting it off I can no longer run a disk check. The 10 second timer stops itself at 10 and proceeds to the log in screen. Not sure if it's important but my "l" key is broken and I was told that that key being broken may be counting as the "press any key to skip dick check". If that is the issue is there any way around it? And if that isn't it then why won't my disk check continue?

I keep receiving a pop-up with the above message concerning my USB ports..when nothing is connected. From reading around I suspect the problem may be a stray driver from some software package but how do I detect which? I can see at least one in Device Manager relating to a programme I've deleted in the past. Another is for Virtual WiFi (I had difficulties with the MiniPort Adapter at one stage) but I gather that will be coming into use at some point? Bit of a novice, can someone reassure me how to detect the problem and fix it?

A few weeks ago I changed the file association for .html files to open with Notepad (instead of IE) and since then I have noticed that often when I perform a Save As action in Notepad (on an .html file) and then press the Enter key (as opposed to the Save button) Notepad "stops working" and generates the following message:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: NOTEPAD.EXE
Application Version: 6.1.7600.16385
[Code]......
Note that I used a program called Default Programs Editor to make the change. Has anyone seen anything like this? Is there a way to reinstall Notepad independently? In every other way Notepad works fine.
PS: As for the reason I used a third party app to change the default program, I tried to do it "normally" but it wasn't sticking. But I realized after that the reason it wasn't sticking is because that change somehow prompted IE to think it wasn't the default browser, and when the message came out asking me if I wanted to make IE the default browser, it undid the file association to Notepad. I only realized this after the fact.

Recently my PC's registry became corrupted, leaving me unable to boot. As I really want to keep my files, programs, settings etc I would much prefer to do an Upgrade install than perform a Custom one and wipe everything.
However, the Windows 7 disk insists I boot into Windows before performing the upgrade installation, which is the one thing I cannot do due to my corrupt registry. Compatibility Report is as follows:
Compatibility Report
The computer started using the Windows installation disk. Remove the installation disk and restart the computer so that Windows starts normally. Then, insert the installation disk and restart the upgrade.
This is a frustrating cycle. I can't boot Windows, so I try to perform an Upgrade Install, which I can't do because I have to boot Windows.
Things I've tried:
- Various chkdsk commands, none of which have worked due to my drive seeming to be write protected
- System restore, which I was unable to do as apparently System Protection must be enabled on the drive and I'm unsurehow to do this
- All of the registry repair tools on Hiren's boot CD, all of which are either irrelevant to the problem or have given me error messages
As I have Hiren's CD I can access my hard drive through Explorer, so would it be possible to use Mini XP to attempt the Upgrade Install? If this isn't possible, how else can I repair my registry?

In the beginning of the year I got the infamous malware that infected many PC's worldwide (can't remember the name) and got my action center completely destroyed. I eventually fixed it, by adding the Security Center service that was gone, but one issue still remains: the action center system tray icon is greyed out, and impossible to turn back on!
I searched online, and the most common solution I've found was to run the sfc /scannow command. So I did, and for some reason it stops at 69% and after about a minute stuck at that number it says: "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation" I tried multiple times, but the same error happens every time. How can I fix this error, without re-installing the OS? Or is this only solved that way?

I have a Toshiba Satellite C655-S5132 that just shut down & now will not boot Windows 7. Just goes to black screen w/blinking cursor then goes to 'startup repair' (which I'm postiive this is a virus of somekind) & will not allow me to do anything. Just repeats itself. I downloaded Windows 7 repair to a CD-R, chgd BIOS settings to CD/DVD to boot first, saved changes, and will NOT pull/boot up from disc. I've tried 2diff repair discs, both do not work. 'F8' does not do anything for me, not able to get to 'safe mode'. Computer is only 2yrs old.
