View 6 Replies View RelatedAfter numerous attempts, Windows install keeps stalling at the "expanding Window's files" screen, then cancels the install. (Bios checks ok, disk has no scratches, and both DVD writers return the same results.)To help prove the integrity of the SSD (still under warranty) I would like to now try doing a temp OS install on another internal HDD. There are 2 of those, each with data on them. Each HDD has only one large partition, as in drive D & drive R.What is the detailed procedure in preparing one of those HDDs in order to accept a temporary OS install, while still preserving the existing data on that physical disk? I must also be able to identify which disk is which (new partition?) when it comes to finding the "new" disk when loading the Windows 7 install software?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI work for a college that needs 2 and possibly 3 bootable partitions for testing.I might need the 3rd due to conflicts with the testing programs not liking each other. The hard drive has 3 50gb partitions with another 80gb unallocated on a 250gb hard drive.I have successfully done a XP followed by a 32 bit Windows 7.I tried to put Windows 7 on the third, and it didnt ask where to install.I just started to install without asking where to install.Because of this, it wiped out the boot manager of the disk and had to re-partition the disk.I am just wanting to know if this would be possible to do.

Having spent a while checking which of my existing applications will run under Windows 7 I have now learned enough to realise that my conclusions may have been affected by XP Mode which I believe exists only in Windows 7 Professional & Ultimate.
My current copy of Windows 7 is the Windows 7 Release Candidate which I believe is Windows 7 Ultimate, but the PC I hope to buy after Christmas will most likely be Windows 7 Home Premium.
Can anyone advise how I inhibit XP mode so I can test compatibility with Home Premium and/or how I can tell whether a legacy applications is running in Windows 7 Ultimate courtesy of XP mode, and therefore may not run under Windows 7 Home Premium?
I purchased a computer from eMachines for around $200 last year. I had originally bought it because the case was nice and easy to work with. I changed the 1 core Celeron 1.6Ghz to a Dual Core 2.2Ghz. I also upgraded the ram from 2GB to 4GB DDR2.I later started to get blue screens with the error "IQRL_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL". I brought it into my local Tiger Direct and a technician said that I had crashed sectors in my hard drive and to buy a new one and re-install Windows 7. I did so and about a few hours after, the system crashed again with the same error. I brought it back to them and they did thorough tests on every component and said that everything was fine. The computer has almost no third party software on it besides Google Chrome, Java and so on and so forth. But it keeps crashing. I figured it was the ram, but after testing it with MEMtest for 6 hours, nothing. I figured it was the GeForce 210 graphics card, so I installed the most recent drivers. Tiger Direct and I pretty much tried everything there was to try, but it keeps giving me IQRL_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL.

Basically, I overclocked my CPU to 4.19 gHz and everything is running smoothly (also got a Radeon 7770 HD graphics card) so I decided to redo my WEI score and close to the end of the CPU test the computer crashed and went to the blue screen of death before restarting again. Everything seems fine with my computer but I'm not sure what the problem might be. [code]

Normally I have only two monitors connected, one on HDMI and one on DVI. Yesterday I brought home a third monitor just to test around a bit, to see if I could get a third monitor working. I had the cables so I tried connecting it to either DisplayPort, HDMI or DVI on either of the cards, alternating. So far I have failed. This is not really a big surprise since I got info from Sapphire telling me it would most likely not work, since the cards do not support multiple monitors beyond two.
The most surprising part was Windows. It tried to detect the third monitor as connected via VGA and extend desktop to it. I went along and played with the settings a bit to no avail. The third monitor (an older Eizo) does not have a VGA port.
So I disconnected it, rebooted just in case, and left the matter for another day. To my surprise, Windows still claims there is a VGA monitor, diconnected, but it is there. My display settings: And the "ghost" display setting: How do I remove this last entry of a monitor that is no longer connected??

When I attempt to open Firefox or any other program it defaults to 'Open With' (usually Adobe 9). He is NOT computer literate and I am sure he has inadvertently downloaded a virus, or perhaps the Trojan he had on his old computer was trasferred to the new one by way of the USB for his wireless mouse.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an Acer Aspire 5542-5462 laptop (◦CPU/Ram: 2.2 GHz / 3838 MB) w/ Windows 7 and the product details indicates I have four 2.0 USB ports (2 on the right side, 2 on the left). Today I connected my 1TB external "SimpleDrive" hard drive in order to do a backup which I'd done previously but my last one was afew months ago and this time got the same "This Device Can Perform Faster - Your USB Mass Storage Device can perform faster if plugged into a hi-speed port" message as others have. This is the first time I've received this message.Below that is a window with the heading "The hubs shown in BOLD type have free ports that can support the HI-SPEED USB device." and in the window it shows 2 separate "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller" and under each it shows a sub-heading "USB Root Hub #6 ports# in BOLD TYPE. Under the 1st USB Root Hub it reflects all 6 as being "Unused Port" and under the 2nd USB Root Hub it reflects all but the 5th of 6 as being "Unused Port" and the 5th as "USB Composite Device".I went online to find out about the USB "This Device Can Perform Faster" message and what it meant, along with solutions. I've tried the following:
-Went into the "Device Manager" window and the "Universal Serial Bus controllers" sub-menu which reflects, in order, 2 "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller", 4 "Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller", 2 "USB Composite Device", 1 "USB Mass Storage Device" and finally 6 "USB Root Hub".Per online instructions I right-clicked on each one and used the "Update Driver Software" #via a "Search online for updates" option# and received a "The best driver software for your device is already installed; Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date" for each and every one.
-Secondly per online suggestions I checked each USB Root Hub and all reflected as running at "full-speed" instead of the optimum "hi-speed" #which was indicated as to what should be showing if using a true 2.0 USB port#.So basically what I'm asking is if I have the current drivers already installed and my laptop's 4 USB ports are all supposed to support 2.0, then why aren't those USB Root Hubs running at HI-SPEED instead of the slower full-speed? Is there something I've missed? Or is there nothing wrong at all?
I just got two new harddrives for my birthday - one for my desktop, and one for my laptop. The desktop drive is 3 TB, which Windows won't let me use the entirety of...this is sort of a separate issue and not what brings me here, because I figure I can get around this by using another drive for the operating system and just use the 3 TB drive for storage. The drive I want to do this with is the 250 GB drive currently in my laptop, which will be replaced with the other new drive I got for it, 500 GB.
My plan is to make a backup of all the data on my 250 GB laptop drive to the 3 TB (backing up from my laptop to my desktop, connected by the homegroup). Then I'll put the 500 GB into my laptop, copy everything back to it, and use the 250 GB as the second drive in my desktop. *deep breath* it's tedious, but the best solution I came up with to make the migration possible.
I can't use malwarebytes or even perform a system restore...
View 4 Replies View RelatedIs there any way to perform multiple incremental backups for multiple drives with the Windows Backup utility? The reason I ask is because my experience with the Backup utility only allows me to schedule one type of backup. My issue is that I have six hard drives in my tower and the total disk space across them is more than any disk space that most external hard drives have. Having that said, I don't have a way to incrementally backup all of my drives. Is there any third party software out there that allows me to allow me to perform multiple incremental backups for my system? Can I do this with the Windows Backup utility a different way? The built-in program does a great job but it's limited with what I want to do.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got an ASUS K50IJ notebook, and lately, when I try to Save, Save As or Browse files on my computer, it freezes. This doesn't happen all the time; it's pretty unpredictable. In fact, the problem disappeared for a whole week before showing up again today.
The nature of each crash tends to vary. Sometimes the whole system locks up, and I have to forcibly shut it down with the power button. Other times, the window that triggered the problem is the only thing that freezes. Furthermore, sometimes the computer will unfreeze after several minutes, while in other cases my only option is to restart.
Make my laptop perform faster. Its very Lag.

View 4 Replies View RelatedA few weeks ago I changed the file association for .html files to open with Notepad (instead of IE) and since then I have noticed that often when I perform a Save As action in Notepad (on an .html file) and then press the Enter key (as opposed to the Save button) Notepad "stops working" and generates the following message:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: NOTEPAD.EXE
Application Version: 6.1.7600.16385
[Code]......
Note that I used a program called Default Programs Editor to make the change. Has anyone seen anything like this? Is there a way to reinstall Notepad independently? In every other way Notepad works fine.
PS: As for the reason I used a third party app to change the default program, I tried to do it "normally" but it wasn't sticking. But I realized after that the reason it wasn't sticking is because that change somehow prompted IE to think it wasn't the default browser, and when the message came out asking me if I wanted to make IE the default browser, it undid the file association to Notepad. I only realized this after the fact.
I am sure this has been asked before, but I need to know if I get the upgrade disk and for whatever reason I have to do a clean install again, will the upgrade disk do that or will I have to load Windows XP back on then use the upgrade disk from there?
