3 Bootable Partitions For Testing?
Dec 6, 2011
I work for a college that needs 2 and possibly 3 bootable partitions for testing.I might need the 3rd due to conflicts with the testing programs not liking each other. The hard drive has 3 50gb partitions with another 80gb unallocated on a 250gb hard drive.I have successfully done a XP followed by a 32 bit Windows 7.I tried to put Windows 7 on the third, and it didnt ask where to install.I just started to install without asking where to install.Because of this, it wiped out the boot manager of the disk and had to re-partition the disk.I am just wanting to know if this would be possible to do.

One of my friends has a windows 7 computer with an account for himself, his mother and his 2 sisters. All the home directorys are stored in drive C. Partition D is shared. The question is, how to get a partition layout like this?
Partition 1: OS + programs
Partition 2: home partition for himself
Partition 3: home partition for his mother
Partition 4: home partition for his sister
Partition 5: home partition for his other sister
Partition 6: shared partition for some photos.

After numerous attempts, Windows install keeps stalling at the "expanding Window's files" screen, then cancels the install. (Bios checks ok, disk has no scratches, and both DVD writers return the same results.)To help prove the integrity of the SSD (still under warranty) I would like to now try doing a temp OS install on another internal HDD. There are 2 of those, each with data on them. Each HDD has only one large partition, as in drive D & drive R.What is the detailed procedure in preparing one of those HDDs in order to accept a temporary OS install, while still preserving the existing data on that physical disk? I must also be able to identify which disk is which (new partition?) when it comes to finding the "new" disk when loading the Windows 7 install software?

Having spent a while checking which of my existing applications will run under Windows 7 I have now learned enough to realise that my conclusions may have been affected by XP Mode which I believe exists only in Windows 7 Professional & Ultimate.
My current copy of Windows 7 is the Windows 7 Release Candidate which I believe is Windows 7 Ultimate, but the PC I hope to buy after Christmas will most likely be Windows 7 Home Premium.
Can anyone advise how I inhibit XP mode so I can test compatibility with Home Premium and/or how I can tell whether a legacy applications is running in Windows 7 Ultimate courtesy of XP mode, and therefore may not run under Windows 7 Home Premium?

I purchased a computer from eMachines for around $200 last year. I had originally bought it because the case was nice and easy to work with. I changed the 1 core Celeron 1.6Ghz to a Dual Core 2.2Ghz. I also upgraded the ram from 2GB to 4GB DDR2.I later started to get blue screens with the error "IQRL_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL". I brought it into my local Tiger Direct and a technician said that I had crashed sectors in my hard drive and to buy a new one and re-install Windows 7. I did so and about a few hours after, the system crashed again with the same error. I brought it back to them and they did thorough tests on every component and said that everything was fine. The computer has almost no third party software on it besides Google Chrome, Java and so on and so forth. But it keeps crashing. I figured it was the ram, but after testing it with MEMtest for 6 hours, nothing. I figured it was the GeForce 210 graphics card, so I installed the most recent drivers. Tiger Direct and I pretty much tried everything there was to try, but it keeps giving me IQRL_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL.

I have a problem (though I think it is minor because my system recovers quite well from it after restarting). Basically, I overclocked my CPU to 4.19 gHz and everything is running smoothly (also got a Radeon 7770 HD graphics card) so I decided to redo my WEI score and close to the end of the CPU test the computer crashed and went to the blue screen of death before restarting again. Everything seems fine with my computer but I'm not sure what the problem might be. [code]

I have 2xSapphire Radeon 6750 1GB DDR5linked with a Crossfire cable. More accurately, this card
Normally I have only two monitors connected, one on HDMI and one on DVI. Yesterday I brought home a third monitor just to test around a bit, to see if I could get a third monitor working. I had the cables so I tried connecting it to either DisplayPort, HDMI or DVI on either of the cards, alternating. So far I have failed. This is not really a big surprise since I got info from Sapphire telling me it would most likely not work, since the cards do not support multiple monitors beyond two.
The most surprising part was Windows. It tried to detect the third monitor as connected via VGA and extend desktop to it. I went along and played with the settings a bit to no avail. The third monitor (an older Eizo) does not have a VGA port.
So I disconnected it, rebooted just in case, and left the matter for another day. To my surprise, Windows still claims there is a VGA monitor, diconnected, but it is there. My display settings: And the "ghost" display setting: How do I remove this last entry of a monitor that is no longer connected??

I recently bought a notebook PC, and was quite annoyed to find that Intel has magically removed the ability to change the Centrino N 130 wireless adapter's MAC address. Before the nutters get in here with accusations of "illegal" activity, I feel obligated to point out that there is nothing "illegal" about changing the MAC address on my own property. Briefly, I want to pose my notebook as a hypothetical attacker, trying to bump one of my other wireless devices off the router by assuming its MAC address. I don't really know what would happen if I did this, because, like I said, Intel artificially crippled the Centrino N 130 through its Windows 7 drivers. Rather paternalistic of them.Another benefit of the proposed experiment: showing the futility of MAC filtering in keeping out the "bad guys." I have been convinced of this for some time, but been simultaneously unable to demonstrate it to my own satisfaction. There is no substitute for actually trying something, rather than just reading about it.
I am also a little annoyed at the Centrino N's (lack of) performance. I have yet to have it connect at greater than 72 Mbit/s, even while sitting less than 10 feet from the router with a clear line of sight.FWIW, my router is a NetGear WNR3500v2. N wireless is enabled. As far as I know, this router is capable of supporting a full 300 Mbit or so 802.11n wireless connection, as long as the wireless NIC on the other end is doing its part (which mine doesn't).With all that in mind, can someone suggest an N-capable wireless NIC that is not purposely crippled by its manufacturer? I would prefer an internal mini-PCIe card, but Intel seem to be the only ones making those. Even a G-capable or USB device would probably serve the purpose, if that's all that's available.

I am thinking of replacing my old Dell using XP, with a modern one. I partitioned the old one so the OS & programs were on one partition & documents on the other. I suppose this will not be necessary with the large hard drives available now? I don't foresee having any problems backing up the documents. What do others think?

I have two physical HDs in one of my machines. The first is C. The second physical HD has two partitions, which are D and E. This drive has failed, and I took a HD from another machine, and added it to this one we are talking about. Windows 7 sees this HD as D, because unlike the one that failed, this "new" one was originally formatted with only one partition. I would like to get Windows 7 to see this HD as D and E (and transfer files as necessary), so when I load my music template from my sequencer, it will find all of the necessary audio files.
If the second HD is only D, the template is not going to be able to find all of the files automatically, even if they are physically on the D drive - this is b/c the sequencer is looking for some of the files on E, which doesn't exist. I can browse for, and point to the the files on D, but it gets to be a PITA if I have to open eny old templates or projects. So, what I would like to do is somehow get Windows to see that second HD as D and E, instead of just D. Is there any trick that I can do to make this happen? Trying to avoid having to reformat.

Have two HDD, one with Windows 7 professional 1TB SATA and other older win XP sp3 160gb SATA. To keep working environment separate, I use one HDD at a time, disconnecting other HDD. It used to work fine except 2 days back, when I had shut down winXP 160GB HDD with hibernation and after detaching that sata cord and reconnecting 1 TB sata cord, there was a major startup failure. With Windows 7 DVD RE, after opening system recovery dialogue box, no options were working including startup repair, system image recovery and system restore. In command prompt, c drive could not be detected. However, after bootrec.exe/fixmbr win 7 started but is a bit slower. How to avoid this problem? Does hibernation of one HDD interferes with startup of other HDD even though no RAM changes take place?. Does frequent change of HDD like this cause hardware/software damage?Specs - Core 2 duo 1.83ghz, 946gzis mb, 2gb RAM, ATI radeon 4850 512mb, VIP 600w smps.

Someone want to explain how the hell you make a bootable ISO from these leaked builds?
Everything I try is FUBAR.
Edit: Okay..nevermind..I Frankenstein it and figured it out finally..I just copied the install files onto my USB flash drive and rebooted and set to boot to USB drive.
No need for an ISO
Edit 2: ...Okay..I give up..I get an error during install saying Windows can't install the required files. The file may be corrupt or missing. bla bla
Anyone else getting this with the 32bit leaked copy that just came out?

I'm using an HP laptop and made a bootable flash key with the Microsoft utility (which I downloaded from Microsoft) to make a Windows 7 installation. I(supposedly) changed the boot order in the bIOS to look first at the key. Didn't work - booted directly into Windows 7 (seemingly bypassed the bootable key)1. How do I tell if the USB key is bootable?2. What could have prevented my BIOS from remembering my new boot order?3. What might be the reason(s) why my laptop won't boot from the USB key?HP Pavilion dv5t-1000 CTO Entertainment Notebook PCSerial Number: CNF84816H3 Product Number: kq573av

I am trying to make my 1TB eGo USB 2.0 Desktop Hard Drive bootable. I am running Win 7. The bios hardware supports booting from a USB drive, and I am able to select the USB drive from the boot menu. But when I choose the USB drive, I get: A disk read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart I am able to read/write from the USB drive normally via Win 7 with no problems, but I am missing that something "bootable" - what is it? I used bootsect make the USB drive bootable.(the USB drive is formatted NTFS and could this matter my computer is formatted 64 bit and the USB drive is formatted with whatever you get when you select NTFS -would that be 64bit in my case?)
