Testing Legacy Apps For Compatibility

Oct 20, 2009

Having spent a while checking which of my existing applications will run under Windows 7 I have now learned enough to realise that my conclusions may have been affected by XP Mode which I believe exists only in Windows 7 Professional & Ultimate.

My current copy of Windows 7 is the Windows 7 Release Candidate which I believe is Windows 7 Ultimate, but the PC I hope to buy after Christmas will most likely be Windows 7 Home Premium.

Can anyone advise how I inhibit XP mode so I can test compatibility with Home Premium and/or how I can tell whether a legacy applications is running in Windows 7 Ultimate courtesy of XP mode, and therefore may not run under Windows 7 Home Premium?

32bit Apps Cannot Connect To Network, 64bit Apps Can

Aug 30, 2012

I can only connect to the network using 64 bit applications on Window 7 Pro SP1.The problem occured after installing the latest version of iTunes (may or may not be related). I uninstalled iTunes with no change. IE 32 bit crashes after opening. Firefox opens but gives Server Not Found error. I cannot connect webservers on the local network with Firefox either. Filezilla will not connect to local or remote servers. VNC will not connect to local servers - IE 64 works fine and command line tools like ftp and telnet to internal and external sites works fine - this is not a DNS, Firewall, or Routing issue.

Same results in Safe Mode
sfc /scannow runs clean.

I reset the winsock, uninstalled all my network adapters, including the drivers and resinstalled them.Rebooted multiple times.Unfortunately I just discoved that System Restore was not enabled so I can't roll back.I doubt this is malware related as I have multiple levels of defense (postini, SpyShelter, Symantec Endpoint) and outside of iTunes have not downloaded or installed anything or even visited unusual websites. I'm about to do a deep scan that will probably take a few hours just to play it safe.

Testing OS On Another Internal Drive?

Jun 1, 2011

After numerous attempts, Windows install keeps stalling at the "expanding Window's files" screen, then cancels the install. (Bios checks ok, disk has no scratches, and both DVD writers return the same results.)To help prove the integrity of the SSD (still under warranty) I would like to now try doing a temp OS install on another internal HDD. There are 2 of those, each with data on them. Each HDD has only one large partition, as in drive D & drive R.What is the detailed procedure in preparing one of those HDDs in order to accept a temporary OS install, while still preserving the existing data on that physical disk? I must also be able to identify which disk is which (new partition?) when it comes to finding the "new" disk when loading the Windows 7 install software?

3 Bootable Partitions For Testing?

Dec 6, 2011

I work for a college that needs 2 and possibly 3 bootable partitions for testing.I might need the 3rd due to conflicts with the testing programs not liking each other. The hard drive has 3 50gb partitions with another 80gb unallocated on a 250gb hard drive.I have successfully done a XP followed by a 32 bit Windows 7.I tried to put Windows 7 on the third, and it didnt ask where to install.I just started to install without asking where to install.Because of this, it wiped out the boot manager of the disk and had to re-partition the disk.I am just wanting to know if this would be possible to do.

IQRL_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL Crashes After Complete Testing

Aug 20, 2012

I purchased a computer from eMachines for around $200 last year. I had originally bought it because the case was nice and easy to work with. I changed the 1 core Celeron 1.6Ghz to a Dual Core 2.2Ghz. I also upgraded the ram from 2GB to 4GB DDR2.I later started to get blue screens with the error "IQRL_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL". I brought it into my local Tiger Direct and a technician said that I had crashed sectors in my hard drive and to buy a new one and re-install Windows 7. I did so and about a few hours after, the system crashed again with the same error. I brought it back to them and they did thorough tests on every component and said that everything was fine. The computer has almost no third party software on it besides Google Chrome, Java and so on and so forth. But it keeps crashing. I figured it was the ram, but after testing it with MEMtest for 6 hours, nothing. I figured it was the GeForce 210 graphics card, so I installed the most recent drivers. Tiger Direct and I pretty much tried everything there was to try, but it keeps giving me IQRL_LESS_OR_NOT_EQUAL.

BSOD While Testing CPU On Windows Index Experience

Sep 24, 2012

I have a problem (though I think it is minor because my system recovers quite well from it after restarting). Basically, I overclocked my CPU to 4.19 gHz and everything is running smoothly (also got a Radeon 7770 HD graphics card) so I decided to redo my WEI score and close to the end of the CPU test the computer crashed and went to the blue screen of death before restarting again. Everything seems fine with my computer but I'm not sure what the problem might be. [code]

Installing Legacy ATI Driver On Windows 7 X64

Apr 20, 2012

I have ATI x1950 pro VGA card and I need to install its driver on windows 7 x64

I tried installing the legacy 10.2 driver downloaded from AMD website but after installation I restart the PC, I see the windows 7 loading logo then I can't see the welcome screen but I hear windows startup sound! to be able to see my desktop again I have to hard restart the PC and login to safemode and remove ATI driver (which shows under unknown devices)

The problem isn't with ATI driver only it seems that I can't see my desktop with (microsoft's Standard VGA Graphics Adapter driver) also (check attached image)

I tried removing ATI driver and clean the system with "AMD Catalyst TwL Cleaner v3.9.2" but I got the same problem after using.

Should I Delete Legacy Recovery Drive ?

Oct 24, 2009

I am planning to perform a clean install of Windows 7 on my Dell Vista PC (as I understand this is better in the long term than an upgrade).

My PC has a 10GB D: drive, which it came installed with, 'Recovery'. Is this something I should delete/format as part of the Windows 7 upgrade process (and will I get invited to create anew one?), or I should I just leave it be? Apologies if this is a simple question/answer, but I'm a bit snowed under with children today and I don't have time for Google and 'due diligence'!

ATI X1650 Legacy Driver Issue

Feb 9, 2010

I'll start with when I installed Windows XP. My ATI X1650 worked fine when I downloaded the latest drivers from the ATI website. (at the time it was 8.11) Well, other then openGL. DirectX 9 worked fine on it but openGL had issues. I ended up installing the drivers on that came with it and everything was happy.

So, now on to Windows 7. I installed Windows 7 painlessly and everything was working fine. (It even recognized my card and dual monitors without a problem.) And then when I tried an openGL game openGL wouldn't work. So, I found my drivers from forever ago (8.11 which didn't work the first time...) and installed those. Poof, openGL worked. And then I hit my other problem. Aero didn't work now.

So I went online to try and find a new driver and found that ATI had put my card on legacy support. (Basically Windows would ship with all the drivers my card would need. And it did, other than openGL.) So, I went to Device manager and had it check for an updated driver. And guess what, it wouldn't install the original Microsoft driver over my old one. (which I installed to get openGL working)

So basically I need to find some way to get the original Microsoft Windows 7 display driver to install over my old driver without uninstalling my old driver. (I've tried installing the newest ATI drivers (9.2) with support for my card and that didn't work.)

Qn About Legacy NForce2 - SATA Drivers For NF7-S Mobo

Sep 23, 2009

I have an Abit NF7-S mobo (5+ yrs old) that has an nForce2 Ultra 400 + MCP-T chipset. The nvidia site has classified this as legacy, and only has the download for Vista.

Well I usually prefer to install the 'official' drivers, as MS ones seem to be at times problematic from experience. However I went along with installing the ones provided my microsoft update. All components in Device Manager seem to have been installed, and the OS is working without a problem.

But the voice within me still prefers the 'official' vendor software. Would the vista one provided by nvidia work on Windows 7. I use to get a nice small app to control audio in the official release, which I am obviously not getting in the MS trimmed version.

I also have a SATA 150 RAID (Silicon Image Sil 3112A SATA PCI Controller) on the NF7-S which has the same issue as above. All working.. but for that voice.

Legacy Networking - Simple File Sharing

Dec 26, 2009

I have 2 Windows 7 machines connected to a network with several other devices all of which I can see in Windows Explorer - Networking. I've set up shares on each of the Windows 7 machines and turned off Password protected sharing in Advanced sharing settings. The first time I try to access shares on either of the Windows 7 machines from the other machine it asks for a username and password before I can access the shares.

Once the credentials have been accepted the shares continue until the machine is rebooted. Setting the 'Remember credentials' box on the login page doesn't help. Other shared resources (XP desktop, NAS, Media player) on the network all work fine from either of the Win 7 machines. What I am looking for is the equivalent of the old "Simple file sharing" from XP, can anyone tell me how to set this in Windows 7 (Ultimate & Professional)?

Ghost Monitor Left In Control Panel After Testing Three Monitors

Oct 9, 2012

I have 2xSapphire Radeon 6750 1GB DDR5linked with a Crossfire cable. More accurately, this card

Normally I have only two monitors connected, one on HDMI and one on DVI. Yesterday I brought home a third monitor just to test around a bit, to see if I could get a third monitor working. I had the cables so I tried connecting it to either DisplayPort, HDMI or DVI on either of the cards, alternating. So far I have failed. This is not really a big surprise since I got info from Sapphire telling me it would most likely not work, since the cards do not support multiple monitors beyond two.

The most surprising part was Windows. It tried to detect the third monitor as connected via VGA and extend desktop to it. I went along and played with the settings a bit to no avail. The third monitor (an older Eizo) does not have a VGA port.

So I disconnected it, rebooted just in case, and left the matter for another day. To my surprise, Windows still claims there is a VGA monitor, diconnected, but it is there. My display settings: And the "ghost" display setting: How do I remove this last entry of a monitor that is no longer connected??

Globally Set Legacy Open / Save Dialog View

Dec 7, 2011

Okay, have managed to tweak *most* of what I dislike about Windows 7,diabled libraries and favorites, turned off stupid giant icons and got Explorer view back to the Details/ Date Descending that I've been using since Win3.1 days. Fixed taskbar, fixed the theme, got away from all the web styled view as link nonsense, but.I cannot get the Open/Save dialog that appears whenever you use, well, open or save in most any program, especially legacy or XP-based programs (for instance, Irfanview, VirtualDub,etc)to remain consistent folder to folder.Windows 7 seems to insist, rather lamely, that this be manually set with multitudinal clicking for each and every folder. Especially if differs from the default Explorer view (i.e. Details/Descending in Explorer, but want List/Descending in dialogs)Went thru a long process that involved customizing almost every folder I have to be "general items" instead of whatever the stupid folder contents discovery decided it would be, and then set general items to be viewed a certain way in dialogs via registry edits. But Windows 7 unilaterally decided to forget most of these changes after a short time.I also killed libraries entirely around then so that might've been it.Anyhow, is there anyway to have Windows7 actually respect global folder view settings? (without using dumbass libraries/favorites)Call me crazy, but I prefer real folders not virtual ones, named intelligently based on contents or purpose (i.e. not stuff like "my documents"),all located straight off the root C drive where I can navigate to them quickly, not buried three levels deep in some favorites menu,

Boot UEFI From Wake On Lan, Or Convert UEFI MBR To Legacy

Nov 16, 2012

Currently having a wake on lan issue with a certain computer.

The machine is setup correctly but the windows boot information is stored in a 100mb UEFI partition, and when the computer wakes on lan, it will not boot windows, just sit at a blank screen. When it wakes on lan it is trying to boot from the legacy device (same blank screen happens if you choose to boot from it from bios) ive tried updating the bios but no luck, all settings seem to be as they should be.

Is there some trick to get it to load the UEFI MBR, or is there a safe way other then reformatting the machine to move the MBR over to the legacy device itself?

[SECURITY] Recommend A Wireless NIC For Security Testing?

Aug 25, 2011

I recently bought a notebook PC, and was quite annoyed to find that Intel has magically removed the ability to change the Centrino N 130 wireless adapter's MAC address. Before the nutters get in here with accusations of "illegal" activity, I feel obligated to point out that there is nothing "illegal" about changing the MAC address on my own property. Briefly, I want to pose my notebook as a hypothetical attacker, trying to bump one of my other wireless devices off the router by assuming its MAC address. I don't really know what would happen if I did this, because, like I said, Intel artificially crippled the Centrino N 130 through its Windows 7 drivers. Rather paternalistic of them.Another benefit of the proposed experiment: showing the futility of MAC filtering in keeping out the "bad guys." I have been convinced of this for some time, but been simultaneously unable to demonstrate it to my own satisfaction. There is no substitute for actually trying something, rather than just reading about it.

I am also a little annoyed at the Centrino N's (lack of) performance. I have yet to have it connect at greater than 72 Mbit/s, even while sitting less than 10 feet from the router with a clear line of sight.FWIW, my router is a NetGear WNR3500v2. N wireless is enabled. As far as I know, this router is capable of supporting a full 300 Mbit or so 802.11n wireless connection, as long as the wireless NIC on the other end is doing its part (which mine doesn't).With all that in mind, can someone suggest an N-capable wireless NIC that is not purposely crippled by its manufacturer? I would prefer an internal mini-PCIe card, but Intel seem to be the only ones making those. Even a G-capable or USB device would probably serve the purpose, if that's all that's available.
