The System Cannot Find The Drive Specified?

Feb 8, 2013

my old laptop crashed recently, so i had the harddrive taken out and made into an external harddrive with all my data on it. when i plugged it into another laptop, it worked perfectly, i opened it up and looked through all my files and everything.now i have a new laptop here, and when i plug in the external harddrive it opens and i have all my folders in front of me.. but they are shortcuts, such as G:Users and when i open it, it tells me the system cannot find the drive specified?

WIN7 64bit Cannot Find System Drive

Dec 24, 2009

I have a new (replacement for a failed drive) Hitachi 500GB HDD that I'm trying to install Windows 7 64 bit on (full install disk). I have Win XP 32 on drive D: of another drive and want to dual boot. I used PMagic to partition the new drive into 2 250 GB partitions, the first as C: drive, active and primary---formatted NTFS. Thinking I would install on that partition.

When I run install on Windows 7 64 I get to the window where you can select upgrade or custom and I select custom install and select the c: drive. I then get a cannot find a system drive error message. I went bak and removed the partitions thinking maybe it would work on unallocated drive space same error message. I deleted the partition inside Windows 7 from the same screen and formated it there too and still get the same message. Diagnostics show that the drive is good. What am I doing wrong?

"the System Cannot Find The File Specified Usb Format" Usb Flash Drive

Mar 28, 2012

I recently turned my usb into bootable usb in order to run chrome os,everything was ok untill i needed my usb to transfer some files so when i plugged it in while running windows 7 a box popped up to format it i clicked ok,then i noticed the usb from 8 giga showed up as 1 giga in my computer.I opened disk management and saw that it was cutted down in many partitions, i deleted some of them so i would expand it in one partition,at that point my trouble began, the expand option was greyed out,i tried diskpart and delete the partitions there. After that the drive lost its assign letter and showed up as one partition in disk management but in my computer it was invisible,i tried other guides that use diskpart and i download some programs to fix this with no luck.when i tried to format or assign letter from disk management i get this message "the system cannot find the file specified usb format".I tried to plug the usb in my roomates laptop with the same resaults so i dont think its my drivers or laptop problem.

Unable To Delete System Folders From A Drive No Longer Being Used As A System Drive

Mar 21, 2012

I recently reorganized my computer and this included a fresh install of Windows 7 on a new disk. I backed up all my data on the old disk so that I could make sure I wasn't losing any important documents or whatever.I'm now sure I've got everything off the disk that I needed and am using the disk as a storage disk for media. However, there are still folders that I can't seem to erase in the Program Files, Program Files (x86), and Windows directories. Most of the files are gone but about 12GB of junk remains that I no longer need. Whenever I try to delete what is left, it says I need permission from TrustedInstaller and it won't let me delete these files. Is there any way to blow these directories away without having to format the disk? I really can't format because the disk is almost full with data that I need to keep and I don't really have any other disks to temporarily back these files up to.

Windows Drive Full But Can't Find Any Files On The Drive?

Mar 21, 2012

Recently my wife caught a virus on her computer (HP touchsmart windows 7 home premium). Your typical virus program that sends hundreds of pop up screens and says click this for full removal, blah blah blah. Anyways I used malwarebytes to see if the program could be removed, malwarebytes found 5 problems and I removed them. Afterward I noticed that there were no icons on the screen, I tried to bring up task manager and the computer rebooted. once the computer rebooted, there was a black screen with "no operating system found".

I tried the "repair your computer" option on the Windows 7 disk, but it was not able to repair the problem automatically, I also tried some manual command scan prompts that I found on the net. None of this has worked so far.

I figured that I would take the hdd out of her computer and dock it to another computer. The hard drive connected fine, but when I tried to open it there was nothing in there. I tried to make sure that all files were not hidden (they weren't). Funny thing is when I click on properties for the drive it shows that the drive is 2/3rds full but I can't see any files or information when I try to search the drive. I also just tried copying the hard drive to another harddrive and it was copying files but once I opened the new location, it was still empty (even thought the folder said in properties 84 gigs).

Is there something that I am missing, I would like to retrieve all of her documents, pictures etc. then I could reformat that drive and re-install windows if I can not get it to boot back up correctly.

The System Cannot Find The File Specified?

Dec 26, 2012

If I try to install a driver and not all of the driver files are present, I will get the error message "The system cannot find the file specified." But the problem is that it doesn't actually tell me what file it can't find. There is a large empty space right underneath the error, as if something should be in that spot, but the file name is not listed there.(The above example is if you were to update the driver manually. Like if you were to click 'Update Driver', then 'Browse my computer for driver software', then 'Browse' to the directory with the INF file in it, and then click 'Next'.)In Windows XP, if you received the same error, it would show you the name of the missing file.

Cannot Find Operating System

Feb 21, 2013

My rather new Sony Vaio started having BSOD crashes, usually (but not always) after being asleep.  After the BSOD, the restart would fail, with a message saying the operating system could not be found.  But, after a couple restarts or a cold reboot, it would find it and start without problem.  I reset the bios to defaults, did a system restore to before the crashes started- no luck.  To make matters more complicated, the BSOD flash so quickly I don't get error codes, and no matter what I do (check pagefile size/location, system settings), my computer doesn't make a dump file. The event viewer only lists a critical error that the system rebooted without cleanly shutting down first.  I called Sony, they had me run one of their hard drive check programs (not chkdsk and it passed), and then made me reformat/recover using the hidden partition and their recovery software.  Besides the annoyance of the clean reformat and all my software settings etc not restoring quite right, three days after the reformat and I have another BSOD, and again, no .dmp file or any other clues (and of course, all the previous error reports got wiped).

Cant Find Operating System?

Jun 21, 2012

I recently bought a 240gb ocz vertex 3 ssd to install my os on. I installed windows on the ssd and a bunch of bigger games on my other 1tb hdd and 500gb hdd. a few days later I decided to put my 2hdd's into a raid0 array. I didn't format them before doing this but I went into my uefi bios and changed it from ahci to raid then rebooted. I tried to create a 1390gb raid size then a 1300gb size but it said not enough room. so I tried to get back into windows and format them thinking that's what the problem was but when I selected to boot off of the ssd it said some crap about Nero booter or something and it wouldn't work. I tried changing the bios setting back to ahci but still wont work, I tried unplugging all drives except the ssd but it just says reboot and select proper boot device, the ssd is the first boot priority and its set to ahci so what the f is the problem

I managed to figure out that I have to use the VCenter Converter Standalone itself separately to get it to work out better. I am currently able to boot my VM, but my files are corrupted so it sends me to a restore method. I attempted to restore from my external HD and it seemed to work, but then it gave me an error. Obviously it has something to do with the error i got at around 98% while converting. This is on the left side of the box.

System Could Not Find Entered Environment Option

May 8, 2011

I think I have some kind of malware. I am unable to use many functions on my computer, I always get the same error message "C:windowssystem32 strui.exe. The system could not find the environment option that was entered." I can't open system restore, because I get that same error message. I think its any .exe operations that I cannot use. My malware program won't open normally but when I tried it in safe mode, it didnt find any problems.

I also tried system restore in safe mode and from the boot screen, and it told me system protection was turned off, so I tried to turn it back on and the security tab that was needed to do this was missing. I don't have the windows 7 install disc because it was a factory install. I can't install any new programs and now I keep getting error messages saying I may have counterfeit software. In the bottom right corner of the desktop it says "Windows 7 Build 7600 This copy of Windows is not genuine".

How To Find Out What Application Causing System To Stutter

Nov 13, 2012

About 2 months ago I bought a new laptop. (Asus n56v). Since day one, I noticed every application I run will freeze or stutter every now and then. Its totally random when it does this. No matter what I am doing, web browsing, watching a video or playing a game. I always notice the application will stutter. I never get any errors, the applications never crash they just stutter for a second. Now, being a smart wiz that I am, I half screened a video playing, while I had task manger opened in the other half. I went to the performance tab and waited. Sure enough when the video started to stutter, I noticed all of my cores went up to 100% for the time the video was stuttering.

Then they went back to normal 1 - 5%. Again its not just 1 program that does this. Every program does this. Its not my drivers as I installed them over and over again. Its not my video card as I was able to switch to my on board intel 4000 gpu and it still does the same thing. So my only theory now is that there is a background application running that seems to be trying to do something quite intensive every now and then and this seems to be making my applications stutter. So is there a way to check to see what application is using 100% of my cpu every now and then?

More info on my laptop:
Core i7 3rd Gen
Nvidia GT 650m
750GB hybrid ssd drive from Seagate

I have administrator privileges. It seems that Teracopy somehow doesn't have even read permission for the network drive. Taking ownership of the network drive (samba share) is not possible.

Setup Cannot Find Or Create A System Partition Error

Mar 27, 2011

After 8 long years I've finally upgraded my wheezy old pc, and now am drooling to play with this beastly new machine I've just assembled. My system specs should be in my sig below. But after 12 long hours of trying to install windows 7 pro, I'm more kinds of frustrated than there are words for.As in the topic title, I'm up against the "setup cannot find or create a system partition" error. My machine has a single 2 TB Hitachi Sata 3 hard drive, so there is no raid to muck things up, which seems to have been the primary cause of everyone elses troubles with this error. Using my old rig, I partitioned the new drive and transferred all the data from the old drives, leaving the first 75 GB partition empty and waiting for windows 7.

Then "the troubles" began. Research ensued.First thing I tried was to load updated sata 3 drivers from the mobo install disk. No help. Then I tried downloading the latest drivers from Asus and loading them from a flash drive during installation. No dice. Then I tried changing bios settings from Sata to IDE. No dice.Tried all of the above again with minor tweaks. Using the setup tools, I deleted that first partition and tried to make it again but setup gives me the title error.Well, of course I need that partition back so after some more research, I downloaded gparted, booted it up, but the video output is messed up and impossible to read. Then I slept for 6 hours. I woke up, tenacious and desperate, and figured I'd try diskpart (well above my paygrade) to make the first partition active and/or primary. Diskpart won't allow it? I disassembled my new system, plonked the old system back into the case, booted up into winxp off the old hard drive and with Easus partition manager and tried the same thing as with diskpart, but with the same results. No dice. Then, clearly somewhat crazy at this point, I put the new machine back in the case and tried ALL OF THE ABOVE AGAIN. No dice.Upon boot, POST sees the hard drive, but its not detected in bios. I don't know whether this is a hard drive problem, a mobo problem, a configuration problem, or completely normal for my gear. In any case, windows setup lists all the partitions.
