Jan 21, 2012I cannot get windows to update. I have used windows update agent fix it tool, but it always gets an error when trying to run it. I have tried turning off all firewalls and AV programs, but still cannot update. When going to services.msc, it shows update service as stopped. when I try to start it, I get the message:
'Windows could not start the windows update service on local computer. Error 0x80070057: the parameter is incorrect.'
When I click check updates under the windows update program, it says cant update due to service not running. I have checked my ipv6 and ipv4, and both are setup to automatic I have tried using tdsskiller to ensure no rootkits are present, and I'm clean. I ran AV scans and spyware scans, but all come up clean. I have ran system file checker, and chkdsk, but both were fine.

May 20, 2011I'm trying to shrink my hard drive (500 GB) so I can try out Mandriva OS but I can't, whenever I try to do so i keep getting parameter is incorrect. Any suggestions guys? Running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. Oh yeah, consider this my 2nd question, before I was trying to make a new partition I tried installing Mandriva via the disk, but it filled like 50 GB worth of files and I can't find those files.

Mar 30, 2012Upgraded to windows 7 ultimate 64bit from vista ultimate 64 bit. That didnt fix it. I'm desparate. I've tried everything I can find. It has a realtek 8169 nic on board sabertooth x85. I tried USB adapter and where it normally loads it just says it's installed but shows up in device manager. Like thw tealtek nic with yellow triangle on it. If I try an update driver it returns "parameter is incorrect" message. Its not connected and the is no IP using ipconfig. I Lost all my software CDs and emails with serials etc in a house fire last year.

Jan 3, 2010I am unable to create a system repair / recovery disc by either running recDisc.exe or using the option to create a recovery disk in Backup and Retore. It says System Repair Disc could not be created. "The parameter is incorrect (0x80070057)". I have tried using both a blank CDr and a DVDr. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. I am wondering if this is caused by how I setup my dual boot system.
I installed Win 7 to a clean HD first. I noted that it set up a 100 Mb recovery partition. I then realized there was no good way to convert this to a dual boot, so wiped the partitions and set up four news ones: one for XP, one for Windows 7, one for data, and a 133 Mb one in hopes that the installation process would find and use it for the recovery partition. I installed XP first, and then Windows 7 and directed that installation to the partition I had previously setup for it.

Dec 8, 2012I've tried to install with the included CD, plug and play, device manager, and installation program from the manufacturer's website and still get the same error: "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device.(Code 31)". I have tried to install with Norton Internet Security un-installed, with the Windows firewall disabled, with a clean boot, and in Safe Mode with no luck. Initially I had another brand of network adapter that I tried to install, and got the same error so I returned it thinking it was faulty. Same problem with the Belkin. I have ran the sfc /scannow in the command prompt as administrator: "Windows Resource protection did not find any integrity violations". I also ran the WindowsFixit tool, which did not work either. Under the Device Manager I found the Install Error: "The parameter is incorrect. 00000057". When I try to update the driver from the device manager, it tells me the best driver is already installed. It still has the yellow exclamation point on the "Belkin Wireless Adapter" in the Device Manager.

The PC is on a domain so I cannot turn off the option for it to prompt for a password, and I do not wish to turn off the option for sleep mode in order to save power.

Hard Drive Exceeded Normal Parameter?
Dec 22, 2011When i boot my dell inspiron 530s, i get this message immediately before it begins to boot. " hard drive self monitoring system has reported that a parameter has exceeded it's normal operating range." I had windows vista on the machine before i began getting this error, i tried to reinstall vista but the OS wouldn't install for some reason, it had to do with the hard drive. So i temporarily installed XP which it has no problem with. I really just want to put windows vista back on the machine or windows 7, but neither will install.

So the clock should have gone back one hour but it appears to have gone back two! A week ago the time of day now would have been 00:20, the time now should be 23:20 and the time my clock is showing is 22:20. I have looked in control panel > Clock Language Region - and my time zone is set correctly to UTC Dublin Edinburgh Lisbon London as it should be. I try unticking adjust for daylight saving time and click apply but this doesn't even change the time( not even by one hour as it should) it seems to not matter whether it is ticked or unticked, my clock remains an hour behind what the current time actually should be.

I click okay & it wants me to log into kiosk. From there I have to switch user. I've looked in user accounts a dozen times - there is only on user account (admin) & it's in my name. I have a problem with my girlfriends laptop, where she can't install any MSI files, due to a "The file cannot be opened" error, or something to that effect. After looking in the Permissions settings for the MSI file in question, I noticed something in the Security tab, under User Names. Where it's supposed to say Miss Ghoul (STEPHANIE-PCMiss Ghoul), it actually says... Miss Ghoul (STEPHANIE-PC"). There are " where Miss Ghoul should be. I tried for ages to find out how to change this, but because she's running Windows 7 Home Premium, I have no Group Policy editor (if it even helps to have it). Is there any way to force change the " to say what it's supposed to say? And could this have an efect on her ability to install MSI files?

May 7, 2012The OS on one of my W7 machines doesn't want to keep the correct time and I can't figure out why. The first thing I did was check the BIOS and it keeps the right time. I've gone into date and time and confirmed that the time zone is correct (MST) and even manually set the time several times but it always changes to an incorrect time. I've changed the time sync server to different servers and it has the correct time at first, but inevitably changes within a few minutes to a wrong time. The only thing I can find on google suggest it's the CMOS battery, but it's a new motherboard and the BIOS keeps the correct time, as I've said above. Below is my system specs.

The event log shows no error and there was no software update responsible as far as I can determine. To make things more complicated the time/date on the system clock was August 2009. All of installed software was reporting itself as "new" looking for configuration "on first use". Once I spotted this and updated the time everything went back to normal. In all my years on PC's I have never seen this.

Sep 15, 2010I'm having an issue with logging back in after I hibernate the system. It goes to the login page where I enter in my password. The problem is everytime I type in my password, it tells me that I've typed the wrong password. I try to "switch user" and login from there (not sure what the difference is), and that doesn't work either. I always end up having to restart the computer. Then when it gets to the login page, I type in the exact password that I tried to type before, and it works. It's only right after I hibernate that the password stops working.

But when I open them, the icon in the taskbar shows a basic windows classic icon, it does not show the proper icon for these programs. I pin the program to the taskbar, and then unpin it, and it shows up correctly for a while, but then goes back to classic windows icon. How can I try and fix this?
