Hard Drive Self Monitoring Has Reported That Parameter Has Exceeded Its Normal Operating Range

Oct 31, 2012

Today, when I turned on my computer, i saw this message:"Hard Drive SELF MONITORING SYSTEM has reported that a parameter has exceeded its normal operating range. Dell recommends that you back up your data regularly. A parameter out of range may or may not indicate a potential hard drive problem".

Hard Drive Exceeded Normal Parameter?

Dec 22, 2011

When i boot my dell inspiron 530s, i get this message immediately before it begins to boot. " hard drive self monitoring system has reported that a parameter has exceeded it's normal operating range." I had windows vista on the machine before i began getting this error, i tried to reinstall vista but the OS wouldn't install for some reason, it had to do with the hard drive. So i temporarily installed XP which it has no problem with. I really just want to put windows vista back on the machine or windows 7, but neither will install.

Have Two 2 Operating System On One Hard Drive

Dec 8, 2009

I currently have windows vista 32 bit on my hard drive. I want to upgrade to windows 7 ultimate, but don't want to format this HD just yet.

Is there a way to load windows 7 onto this hard drive then have that portion of the HD boot up in windows 7? That way I can run windows 7 and still have my windows vista and all my files on the same hard drive.

If windows 7 works out, can I delete that windows vista portion and copy the files into the Windows 7 portion?

Hard Drive Wont Found Operating System

Jun 15, 2011

So yesterday I was online and uploaded a pic to Twitpic. Everything froze up so after a bit I decided to restart. When it restarted it went right into system repair. I let that run ALL NIGHT LONG. In the morning, it asked if I wanted to do a system restore and I said yes. But it said I had no restore points. I knew that wasn't right so I ran through the memory check option and then the hard drive check and was told memory was fine but now I don't have a hard drive found or an operating system. Any clue what has happened or how to restore everything?

Reformat External Hard Drive With Operating System

Nov 13, 2011

I have a hard drive I recovered from my old Dell laptop when the motherboard gave out. Originally, I just put it in an external hard case and have been using it as external storage. Now it is getting filled up, so I would like to reformat it to remove the OS partition (Vista) to give me access to the entire drive. I have removed and baked up all my files, but cannot find a way to repartition the drive to remove the OS volume. Disk manager will not let me access that volume to delete it - nor will diskpart. In fact, only the non-OS volume even shows up with a drive letter in diskpart.

I have searched the web but have only been able to find info on how to reformat the main hard drive...and this is definitely NOT what I want to do.

Using Two Hard Drives With Two Different Operating Systems?

Nov 1, 2012

I am running windows 7 pro 64 bit on a WD 500 gig Sata Hard Drive, The other day I pulled the sata cable from the 500 gig sata and installed a samsung 250 gig SSD and loaded win 8 pro. The install went great. The problem is when I connect the sata cable back to the 500 gig HD to boot to win 7 I have to hook to a different slot on the motherboard to get it to boot. If I want to boot to the win 8 hard drive I have to do the same. If there a easier way to use two hard drives with two different OS in one computer so I can boot to either one. I dont want to dual boot on same drive.

3 Hard Drives, 3 Operating Systems

Oct 24, 2009

I did a clean install of Windows 7 Home premium on a new hard drive. Previously, I had 2 hard drives and ran a dual boot, one XP and the other Vista. After Win 7 install, my machine originally gave me the option to boot into ony one of the three. After a few re-boots, it started skipping the splash screen and would automaitlcally got to Win 7 (I have no issues with this).

Now that I like Win 7 and everything is running fine, I want to format my other two drives. Problem is that my system won't let me format the drive with Vista on it as it seems to be using some system files or something. I've tried it from my computer, disc management and command prompt with no luck.

I removed the boot sequence from msconfig so only Win 7 is there and I used EasyBCD as another way of trying. Still can't format the Vista drive. All I want is my computer running Win 7 only and use my older drives as backup drives.

Using Two Hard Drives Operating System Installation

Jun 14, 2012

I have two hard drives, one is SATA 500gb and the other is IDE 150gb. I had Windows 7 on the SATA and an old Ubuntu on the IDE hard drive. I hardly ever used Ubuntu and got tired of GRUB coming up every time I booted asking which OS I want so I decided to uninstall it. I wanted to go ahead and reformat the drive so I used an old Windows XP cd I have to reformat the 150g IDE drive. It wouldn't let me just reformat without installing XP so I went ahead and did that.So now whenever I turn on the PC it automatically boots into Windows XP. In XP I can see both drives, my 500gb with all my files and Windows 7 and the 150gb with just XP on it. In my BIOS the SATA 500gb is set as the main hdd, and is set as #1 in the boot priority (IDE hdd is not anywhere in boot priority). When I bring up the boot list and choose the SATA HDD it just brings up a BIOS flasher, no Windows 7.

Migration From Raid0 To Normal Drive

Dec 16, 2012

I'm showing an error in my Raid0 configuration, although windows is working properly, and from what i see, i can access all my data. But I think its time to move the install to a normal drive, and i used a ghosting tool to clone the 2 partitions to a new drive. All went fine.

I rebooted, and had to run windows repair from the original DVD, to fix the bootmgr.exe missing file. Again all went well and got all working on the new disk.

However now the clone requires 'activation' within 3 days, and when i try, it tells me i can't, because its and 'upgrade' (which it is), and that i need a new key (which i don't, at hefty price tag!!). Is there a way to fix this, without buying a new 'stand alone version' of windows 7.? (i have the original disk including the key, and its windows 7 ultimate upgrade 64bit).

Upgrading Hard Drive On A Solid State/Hard Drive System?

Oct 25, 2011

So, I have a i7 2600K system with a solid state disk as the boot drive, and an older (c2008) Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB drive as the data drive for programs (that I deem as not worthy of the quick load times). The hard drive has given me some errors over time, and I bought a hard disk to replace it (a Hitachi 1TB). The issue I'm having is that the fact that Windows 7 puts a small (100MB) partition on the F3, and for some reason, even though I'm running Acronis 2012, it doesn't seem to be able to clone the F3 over to the Hitachi. I've also tried Drive XML, and for my 2 hour wait, I only managed to acquire a boot error. Thankfully, I've not done anything rash to destroy the data on the F3, but given the fact that I've seen corrupted files in Steam from that drive, I'm not will to trust it long term with my data. I really need to get the data onto that Hitachi, though... Anyone have any advice for upgrading the HDD in a SSD/HDD system? I don't really feel like it should be so hard, especially if I've bought Acronis True Image, but maybe they haven't designed their product to handle this scenario quite yet?

Windows 7 On SSD Boot Drive And User / Program Files On Normal HD

May 9, 2010

I saw on microsoft site that users would benefit by using ssd as boot drive and have users folders and personal data on second drive may be even installed programs. Making backups of personal data easier and also if you have to format the drive with the os you don't have to move personal data. They don't say how to do this (although one place on their site they say go to the folder go to properties and change location of folder, which many people have had issues with this and it doesn't allow you do do this with all folders and it doesn't let you move the users and programs with out issues or weird broken workarounds registry edits).

1.) What I need or what we need to make or find is a step by step guide on how to do a dual drive set up that doesn't mess up the os, and doesn't allow the OS or programs to write to the old location.
2.) Also make a list of everything that could me moved or stored on the 2nd drive instead of on the SSD so that it takes up less room. Or move things to the normal drive that make many reads and writes to the ssd, that would shorten its life span with no performance gain.
3.) Also make a list of the items and fils and folders that would be best on the SSD for performance reasons stability ect, temp files etc., things that would make the computer and OS and programs run quickest.

Additional Information : Windows 7 OS to install on SSD as boot drive or system drive, and have all user files and folders, and maybe some or all program files to install or reside on the 2nd drive normal hard drive. How do you make SSD your primary drive and all data and files on your second hard drive normal spinner hard drive with out registry edits etc.

Computer Is Not Booting Hard Drive/Unresponsive Hard Drive?

Jun 16, 2011

I have a HP Touchsmart IQ500. Turning my computer PC on today, all I got was a blue HP invent screen with setup, boot menu, system recovery, and system diagnosis, and I could not get past it. I entered the BIOS and figured out that the hard drive was listed as "not installed." Pretty sure that is the main problem.I tried a system restore (with the Windows 7 install disc), but I guess the computer couldn't read the hard drive enough to enter safe mode (I tried restarting and F8ing several times). I put in an external hard drive, and the BIOS read it; however, windows does not allow you to partition an OS on a hard drive.

Internal Hard Drive Acting Like An External Hard Drive?

Mar 4, 2010

I also have a 64 Solid-state drive in there as my primary hard drive that Windows was installed on and a couple of programs are installed on. My storage disk (the 1TB disk) is for all my music/films etc. Whenever I drag and drop a file into the Samsung hard-drive - it copies it rather than moves it instantly. When I had a laptop, I had 3 external hard drives and this is the way it copied files onto them.how I can get the internal drive to stop acting like an external drive?
