I have windows 7 Home Premium and I am facing some problems with Hibernate and Standby. The first Problem is that my system doesn't hibernate but instead it just perform a log off. The second problem is that when I put the system in standby, it wakes up automatically after 2 to 3 hours which makes a serious problem if my laptop is in the bag.
View 4 RepliesFor some reason, every time I try to hibernate my PC (start -> hibernate), it locks itself instead and goes brings me straight to the login screen. This problem has only occurred recently and I haven't had problems with this before. The command line "shutdown /h" does the same thing and results in "The system cannot find the file specified. (2)".
"powercfg -a" results in:

My specs are:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
Intel core i7 CPU

I'm running dual boot with windows XP on another partition as well. My windows 7 partition is active and system but the windows XP partition is boot.
My computer occasionally wakes up from Standby. I have a USB-based KVM switcher providing mouse and keyboard. When I want to put it in Standby, I first switch the switcher to my other computer, then I go into Standby by pressing the power button. When I want to use the computer again, I first switch the switcher back to the computer, then press the power button. Waking up from Standby spontaneously is not a major problem, as it is set to go back to Standby after several minutes. But I'm curious as to what might be happening.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy computer is several years old, and just a few weeks ago started having a problem waking from standby. Up until now, it had no issues going into and coming out of sleep.Now, whenever it goes to sleep (whether due to inactivity or putting it to sleep manually), it won't wake up. The lights come on, the fans come on, but the monitor stays in standby. I've looked around online and found that many people get a black screen when booting up, i.e. the monitor comes alive and they may get a mouse cursor, but that's not what's happening to me. I don't get a black screen--my screen is never getting a signal from the computer. I have to do a hard reset, after which I get the 'Start Windows Normally' screen.I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the graphics drivers, changing hybrid sleep settings, using hibernate instead of standby, uninstalling random programs, etc, to no effect. I don't think I had any major windows or driver updates that caused it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedEvery evening after hibernation, the computer comes out of hibernation unexpectedly, lights up the screen unasked for!Note: I have adjusted the power settings in control panel to do this w/o a password wake-up. Even the screen doesn't dim with no use! This is a new phenomenon, it was working properly about a month ago. I did at one time in the last month reset everything to defaults, but that was in response to the beginning of this problem !

whenever I click on "Hibernate" from the start menu, my computer goes on standby. Also my computer usually has the uncanny ability to Hibernate when its battery gets critical. Now it just goes on standby, and I lose my work.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am having a serious problem with sleep mode in WIN7. Whenever I put the PC in sleep mode, it will come back on when I hit ESC or move the mouse, but the monitor never comes back on and the PC is crashed. I can't do anything other than cut the power to get it to shut off. My bios is only the same version that came on the CD that came with the board. In the directions, it stated not to update the bios if I am not having problems, and up until I went to try to put it in sleep mode today everything has been running perfect. I have also not updated my ATI Catalyst software either, just still running the same stuff that came on the CD with the GPU.
I guess I figure why mess with success if all was well. My memory shows to be running at 1600 with the voltage at 1.65. I've done a bit of research on the topic, but there's lots of varied opinions on other forums I've seen. This symptom is very problematic and I am nervous about keeping on causing it to occur if I can't get a good handle on what to do first - when it did this I had to try rebooting twice for my machine to finally come alive again (the first reboot was unsuccessful and the monitor never responded similar to the first crash).

I have a small network consisting my work system and a HTPC. The HTPC spends all day sleeping, or at least that's the plan. It has a couple of maps to shares on my work machine, but not vice versa. Whenever I open an Explorer window on my main system it wakes up the HTPC, annoyingly. There doesn't appear to be a don't wake on LAN option (it's an Intel DH67GD motherboard). I could understand it if I had mapped some drive letters on my main system to shares on the HTPC, but that's not the case.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI accidently managed to delete all files in my c:/users directory and now my system won't go into standby or hibernate mode. It just shows a blank screen when I choose either or these but the PC never hibernates or sleeps and the only way to get it out of this state is a hard shutdown. I deleted all Files/Folders except my own user folder.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am having trouble with a friends computer... his computer was becoming unresponsive with up to an hour start up times before he was able to use it. We tried to run anti-virus software but wouldn't complete any scans.
We decided to go ahead and save all the files he needed and do a complete system recovery f11 (format hard drives back to factory settings) when started it takes about an hour or two and hangs up at 9% and will go no further. Left it overnight to no avail.
My computer has been stuck at "please wait while your windows files and settings are being restored System restore is restoring the registry" for almost 24 hours. I have a Toshiba with Windows 7 home premium 64bit .

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have just purchased a refurbished Dell Inspiron Mini 10 netbook with windows 7 starter. Not sure if the problem I am experiencing is to do with a dodgy netbook or with the operating system. It set up yesterday without any major issues, a bit slow and sticky at browsing but then on powering it up today it started automatically installing updates. Fine I thought, but now some 10 hrs later it has been stuck on update 62 or 62 for the last 5 hours!
I basically can not do anything and have tried rebooting and switching off despite the screen's advise. I have no start menu and none of the keys are responding not even the F range. So am a complete blonde as you may have gathered on such technical matters anyhow. Should I return or is there a simple solution to fixing the matter?? Screen states 'Please do not power off or unplay your machine. Installing update 62 of 62'.
Everything on my system is running like I like it to with the exception of the system clock in windows 7. It got this way when I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on a separate SSD that has to be chosen in BIOS. The Ubuntu clock is correct but every time I switch from Windows to Ubuntu and back again the clock in Windows is exactly six hours fast. I have re-set the clock to the correct time but this happens every time.

I have configured a backup job which wakes up the laptop at midnight, takes a backup and puts laptop into standby again. All this happens with the laptop lid closed. The power scheme is configured to put laptop into standby when lid is closed.
The resume from standby, backup and suspend after backup is controlled by Windows Home Server (2003) console which is installed on the laptop. I had purchased the HP laptop in October of last year and this job used to work just fine. Sometime in March of this year, the backup stopped working.
After checking the logs and physically observing the laptop at midnight, I found that the laptop resumes from standby at the scheduled time but immediately goes into standby if the lid is closed. The backup fails. Windows event logs indicate that laptop lid close action is putting system into standby.
If the lid is open, then the laptop resumes from standby, stays awake, backup proceeds and laptop goes into standby again.
Here are my problems:
a) Why did the backup work for several months and then stopped working?
b) I have other laptops in the house running Windows 7 home premium on variety of hardware (all HP) and they do not have any issue. Even with the lid closed, they resume from standby, do a backup and go into standby again. The power scheme on all these laptops is set to put laptop into standby when lid is closed. I have verified from physically observing the laptops during backup time.
I have checked all the usual suspects like BIOS updates, driver updates, run sfc, completely deleted the Windows Home Server console from laptop and re-installed after deleting all past backups. Is there some setting that I have overlooked?
I bought a new laptop yesterday and today decided to create a system repair disk. I inserted a blank DVD RW and started the process the progress bar went to about 60-70% (estimate, does not give actual progress %) in half an hour and has now been at that exact same point for the last 5 hours. I have had no errors and the window still says "creating disk..." and it still sounds as though the DVD drive is still writing onto the dvd. I Wouldn't think it would take this long to create especially with no progress.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI had my laptop for about 5 months running OEM Win 7 home premium 32bit. The system came with no disks so I am stuck, for now, with the copy loaded. Anyway, things had been running smoothly up to a few weeks ago, for when I tried to put my system into hibernate, like I've done many times before, the screen went black, but the system did not power-down. I could not do anything but power-cycle it. When it came back I got the "Windows failed to shutdown properly blah blah blah" message. I tried 'sleep' and the same thing happened. I don't do much in the way of adding or removing programs on this laptop, aside from updates and the only recent hardware change was using a usb mouse. Which I have tried removing this and there was no change. I have tried updating drivers that needed it (video, audio, and network) as well as the BIOS. No luck.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThis problem started a few months ago when I updated the video drivers on my NVIDIA card. What happens is that when the pc goes to sleep, either by my command or after timing out for inactivity, the pc will wake up when prompted by mouse or keyboard, but the monitors don't. I know the pc wakes because when tapping on keys or clicking the mouse button I will occasionally hear pings from the pc. I'm not convinced that the problem is NVIDIA's, but this does coincide with an updated driver of theirs.Ultimately, in order to get my machine working again I have to press the power button and restart cold. Also, and I'm not sure if this is worth noting, upon cold start, my Kaspersky and clock gadgets, which are normally placed in the upper-right corner of the right monitor, display in the left monitor somewhere off-center.

View 7 Replies View Relatedi've noticed that when i have utorrent working, because of the constant upload etc. , the pc doesn't go to standby. What i mean by standby is that the pc doesnt do anything, the light in the front is filickering slowly, and the internet connection is off. When i move the mouse, the pc springs to life , followed by the internet connection , and in a few seconds i'm connected to the internet. Needless to say, i believe u understand the flaw with this - skype gets disconnected even though i want it to remain on, and i'm guessing the same would happen with facebook. As much as power saving is indeed, important i want my computer to not go into this mode , at least not while there is a program that requires internet or even chat websites.

My BIOS doesn�t support any configuration settings about wake, and the LAN device driver states that it doesn�t support wake on LAN.It�s a Dell Lattitude laptop, about 2 years old.No events are relevant.This started about 6 months ago when I went out and updated all my drivers, so some driver is apparently having fun. I had already run for long enough when it started that I didn�t want to roll back, although I have tried earlier versions of the LAN, WAN and WLAN drivers. This does not have to do with an outdated driver(Most likely) It happened when I decided to decrease the brightness.
Every few days my computer will wake from sleep in the middle of the night and to find out why I check lastwake from the command prompt and got this in attachment. I looked in WMC and didn't find any auto updating turned on. How do I turn this off? I really don't use WMC that much and don't need it waking my computer to update.
