Computer Won't Wake From Standby / Hibernate

Dec 6, 2011

My computer is several years old, and just a few weeks ago started having a problem waking from standby. Up until now, it had no issues going into and coming out of sleep. Now, whenever it goes to sleep (whether due to inactivity or putting it to sleep manually), it won't wake up. The lights come on, the fans come on, but the monitor stays in standby. I've looked around online and found that many people get a black screen when booting up, i.e. the monitor comes alive and they may get a mouse cursor, but that's not what's happening to me. I don't get a black screen--my screen is never getting a signal from the computer. I have to do a hard reset, after which I get the 'Start Windows Normally' screen.I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the graphics drivers, changing hybrid sleep settings, using hibernate instead of standby, uninstalling random programs, etc, to no effect. I don't think I had any major windows or driver updates that caused it.

The screen stays relatively dark when I move my mouse although I can see some light coming from the bottom part of the screen (so the screen seems to be on, just not showing anything sueful). When I try to press the space bar multiple times, my computer gives me a warning ding and it plays a sound when I insert or remove my usb mouse.

PC Doesn't Hibernate / Locks Instead - Standby State Not Supported By System Firmware

Mar 28, 2010

For some reason, every time I try to hibernate my PC (start -> hibernate), it locks itself instead and goes brings me straight to the login screen. This problem has only occurred recently and I haven't had problems with this before. The command line "shutdown /h" does the same thing and results in "The system cannot find the file specified. (2)".

"powercfg -a" results in:
The following sleep states are available on this system: Standby < S1, S3 > Hibernate Hybrid Sleep
The following sleep states are not available on this system:
Standby < S2 >
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

My specs are:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
Intel core i7 CPU
6gb RAM
Radeon 5770 graphics

I'm running dual boot with windows XP on another partition as well. My windows 7 partition is active and system but the windows XP partition is boot.

Wake From Hibernate When Not At Home?

Sep 15, 2012

Title says it all. There are some things you can do from a distance using other pc's, a phone, etc, but I hate leaving my computer on. Anybody have any creative ways to be able to wake a computer up from a distance? Hibernate preferable but I understand it may be unreasonably difficult, perhaps sleep would be better? Still, sleep doesn't give the energy saving advantages as hibernation.

Desktop Hibernate Then Wake On Lan?

power savings (greening our labs) for our Windows 7 labs. These systems are part of a large Windows Domain. Currently we run a 'sysctl' task at night (written in Perl) that does various things like archiving Event logs, random nightly reboots (a random period between 0 and 4 hours so not all the thousands of systems are rebooting at the same time), etc. What I'd like to have happen once all that has run and the system boots up is to put the system into hibernate mode until some prescribed time in the am (before classes start, etc.).

Windows 7 Sleep Does A Hibernate Also; Won't Wake Up

Jun 2, 2011

I have a curious problem with sleep mode on my Win7 build. These issues are usually traced to needing an updated driver for the video card, but I have the most recent one and it didn't make a difference.

My system specs can be seen by clicking on More Information under my avatar, then Member Configuration. Win7 on an SSD on an Asus P7C55D Deluxe.

When I select "Sleep" from the shutdown menu, the system does go into what I usually see for sleep mode. It powers down the monitor and the moving drives, and the power light goes into a slow blink state. So far, normal. If I press the power button to come out of sleep, drives spin but the monitor does not come on and I can't do anything. Not what one wants, but not unusual if there are drivers or hardware that do not support sleep mode.

Then I pressed the hard-reset button. BIOS started as expected, but when it came time to start Win7 it restored the last session state, as if coming out of hibernate. That's unexpected: It went into the sleep state, but also wrote out hiberfile.sys. Or was that "it hibernated, but also went into sleep state?"

And Hibernate does not appear on my Shutdown menu as a choice. So for a while, I would select Sleep, cut power, and reboot. Recently, I assigned the Hibernate function to the power button, and I get a clean Hibernate when I press that button.

how I can get true Sleep mode? This same machine does true Sleep mode in XP if I boot my XP drive, with the same video card and even the same ancient SCSI card.

System Doesn't Wake After Sleep Or Hibernate - Must Do Hard Reboot

Oct 6, 2011

I had my laptop for about 5 months running OEM Win 7 home premium 32bit. The system came with no disks so I am stuck, for now, with the copy loaded. Anyway, things had been running smoothly up to a few weeks ago, for when I tried to put my system into hibernate, like I've done many times before, the screen went black, but the system did not power-down. I could not do anything but power-cycle it. When it came back I got the "Windows failed to shutdown properly blah blah blah" message. I tried 'sleep' and the same thing happened. I don't do much in the way of adding or removing programs on this laptop, aside from updates and the only recent hardware change was using a usb mouse. Which I have tried removing this and there was no change. I have tried updating drivers that needed it (video, audio, and network) as well as the BIOS. No luck.

Computer Wakes Up From Standby?

My computer occasionally wakes up from Standby. I have a USB-based KVM switcher providing mouse and keyboard. When I want to put it in Standby, I first switch the switcher to my other computer, then I go into Standby by pressing the power button. When I want to use the computer again, I first switch the switcher back to the computer, then press the power button. Waking up from Standby spontaneously is not a major problem, as it is set to go back to Standby after several minutes. But I'm curious as to what might be happening.

Computer Will Not Enter Standby Automatically

Jul 25, 2009

I have a PC that I use as a media center attached to my TV running Windows 7 RC and it worked perfectly until about a week ago when I upgraded my laptop to Windows 7 and placed them both in the same Homegroup. Every since then the Media Center will not enter standby mode either automatically, after 10 minutes as configured or from the MC remote control. To get it to enter standby I have to select "sleep" from the WMC "tasks" menu.

As it only happened since creating the Homegroup I am assuming it is something to do with that, but I may be wrong. The MC PC is set to the "Balanced" power profile.

Any ideas?

Windows Resumes From Standby And Goes To Standby Right Away

May 27, 2012

Windows 7 home premium, 64-bit HP Envy 3D laptop with 8GB memory, no custom hardware

I have configured a backup job which wakes up the laptop at midnight, takes a backup and puts laptop into standby again. All this happens with the laptop lid closed. The power scheme is configured to put laptop into standby when lid is closed.

The resume from standby, backup and suspend after backup is controlled by Windows Home Server (2003) console which is installed on the laptop. I had purchased the HP laptop in October of last year and this job used to work just fine. Sometime in March of this year, the backup stopped working.

After checking the logs and physically observing the laptop at midnight, I found that the laptop resumes from standby at the scheduled time but immediately goes into standby if the lid is closed. The backup fails. Windows event logs indicate that laptop lid close action is putting system into standby.

If the lid is open, then the laptop resumes from standby, stays awake, backup proceeds and laptop goes into standby again.

Here are my problems:

a) Why did the backup work for several months and then stopped working?

b) I have other laptops in the house running Windows 7 home premium on variety of hardware (all HP) and they do not have any issue. Even with the lid closed, they resume from standby, do a backup and go into standby again. The power scheme on all these laptops is set to put laptop into standby when lid is closed. I have verified from physically observing the laptops during backup time.

I have checked all the usual suspects like BIOS updates, driver updates, run sfc, completely deleted the Windows Home Server console from laptop and re-installed after deleting all past backups. Is there some setting that I have overlooked?

Computer Won't Always Hibernate/Sleep

Oct 31, 2012

I got my laptop a few weeks ago and noticed that it will sometimes go into hibernate, and other times it will not, and instead hang on a black (but enabled/on) LCD. When you touch the keyboard, it even makes Windows 7 dings for incorrectly pressed key (meaning the OS is still on). If it is going into sleep or hibernate due to low battery and this error happens, it will just keep beeping really loudly at me until the laptop dies (I'm assuming that's the motherboard's part, though).I have no idea what to do, and I'm really freaking puzzled right now. I've already tried turning hybrid sleep on and off, and neither of them yielded any positive results. Anyone have any clue what I should do?

PS: I've noticed last night after gaming for a bit, that the fans remained in a full blast state (yes, even when the game is closed). This might be related to it although I am not sure. Also, I cannot upgrade my video drivers because the graphics are integrated with the Intel Integrated Graphics, meaning the drivers are made by the manufacturer.

Here's my laptop specifications by the way:

-1920x1080 LED Backlit Display
-2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon 7970m
-Intel Core i7 3720QM Quad-Core Processor (2.60GHz), 6MB Cache
-8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz (2 X 4GB)
-Genuine MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit Edition
-Slot 1: 256GB Samsung 830 Series - Solid State Drive
-Slot 2: 500GB SATA 3.0Gb/s, 7200RPM, 16MB Cache HDD
-Integrated High-Definition Audio with THX TruStudio Pro and up to 7.1 Channel support
-Wi-Fi Link 802.11A/B/G/N Wireless LAN Module with Bluetooth - Up to 300 Mbps
-SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Ports

Computer Will Not Wake From Sleep

Nov 28, 2012

Recently, my computer will not wake up from sleep mode. Once it enters sleep mode, the only way to get it functioning again is to hold the power button, completely shut it off, and then boot my system back up. It appears as if everything starts back up once I open the lid or press the power button to wake it up, but the screen never turns back on. The fan starts up, the backlit keyboard lights up, the leds all blink, but nothing I try will turn the screen back on forcing me to press and hold the power button for a complete shut down.I have reinstalled the latest Intel HD Graphics driver as well as the latest NVIDIA graphics driver (both the stable and beta release).I do not get a blue screen or any sort of error. Upon the restart, I am not prompted with any error from windows or any signs of the forced shut down.

Computer Turns On Back When Hibernate

When I used Hibernate in Windows Vista Ultimate I knew that the programs that I left open would be where I left off when I restarted the computer from Hibernate. Now, it just seems to turn on when it wants to. I am sure it is a setting in the Power Settings category in Control Panel. I'm just not sure how to set.

Computer Freezes On Shutdown/hibernate

Aug 5, 2011

I have an ASUS G51JX-X2 laptop with 8 GB RAM (4 2GB chips). I've had this computer for about 18 months without any problems. A couple of days ago, I noticed that the computer hung up when trying to hibernate. The screen was black and the hard drive light was off, but the touchpad, wireless, bluetooth, and power lights remained on. I left it and went to work, and when I returned it was still in this state so I held the power button to shut it down. The computer started normally, but then that night when I went to shut the computer down, it did the same thing. I made some changes to disable the services at start up in an attempt to narrow down the problem and I discover that is I choose restart, the computer shuts down and restarts fine (although it sits with the screen black and the lights on for a while). It will not shut down or hibernate though. what's going on:

I thought I might have gotten a driver update so I looked at Windows Update and I hadn't gotten anything since 7/21. I did get one on 8/3, but that was after I started having problems. Using msconfig I disabled the start up services (except MS) and start up items to see if that helped and rebooted. The reboot worked, but then the shutdown failed again. I read in some forums that it might be related to the wireless, so I used the switch on the front of the computer to turn off wireless and bluetooth before shutting down - no luck. I thought it might be a problem with the memory since that's a relatively recent upgrade so I created a boot CD and ran memtest86+. It ran all night through 4 passes and no errors. I ran chkdsk on the hard drive just to be safe and it didn't find any errors. I checked to see if ClearPageFileAtShutdown was set to 1 in the registry, but it is 0. I checked to make sure that the bios is up to date and it is (version 208).
