Windows 7 Sleep Does A Hibernate Also; Won't Wake Up
Jun 2, 2011
I have a curious problem with sleep mode on my Win7 build. These issues are usually traced to needing an updated driver for the video card, but I have the most recent one and it didn't make a difference.
My system specs can be seen by clicking on More Information under my avatar, then Member Configuration. Win7 on an SSD on an Asus P7C55D Deluxe.
When I select "Sleep" from the shutdown menu, the system does go into what I usually see for sleep mode. It powers down the monitor and the moving drives, and the power light goes into a slow blink state. So far, normal. If I press the power button to come out of sleep, drives spin but the monitor does not come on and I can't do anything. Not what one wants, but not unusual if there are drivers or hardware that do not support sleep mode.
Then I pressed the hard-reset button. BIOS started as expected, but when it came time to start Win7 it restored the last session state, as if coming out of hibernate. That's unexpected: It went into the sleep state, but also wrote out hiberfile.sys. Or was that "it hibernated, but also went into sleep state?"
And Hibernate does not appear on my Shutdown menu as a choice. So for a while, I would select Sleep, cut power, and reboot. Recently, I assigned the Hibernate function to the power button, and I get a clean Hibernate when I press that button.
how I can get true Sleep mode? This same machine does true Sleep mode in XP if I boot my XP drive, with the same video card and even the same ancient SCSI card.
I have an inspiron 1545 running windows 7 (x64) and I am having problems waking up my computer from sleep . Usually, when I put my computer to sleep, I have problems waking up my computer. The screen stays relatively dark when I move my mouse although I can see some light coming from the bottom part of the screen (so the screen seems to be on, just not showing anything sueful). When I try to press the space bar multiple times, my computer gives me a warning ding and it plays a sound when I insert or remove my usb mouse.
I had my laptop for about 5 months running OEM Win 7 home premium 32bit. The system came with no disks so I am stuck, for now, with the copy loaded. Anyway, things had been running smoothly up to a few weeks ago, for when I tried to put my system into hibernate, like I've done many times before, the screen went black, but the system did not power-down. I could not do anything but power-cycle it. When it came back I got the "Windows failed to shutdown properly blah blah blah" message. I tried 'sleep' and the same thing happened. I don't do much in the way of adding or removing programs on this laptop, aside from updates and the only recent hardware change was using a usb mouse. Which I have tried removing this and there was no change. I have tried updating drivers that needed it (video, audio, and network) as well as the BIOS. No luck.
Title says it all. There are some things you can do from a distance using other pc's, a phone, etc, but I hate leaving my computer on. Anybody have any creative ways to be able to wake a computer up from a distance? Hibernate preferable but I understand it may be unreasonably difficult, perhaps sleep would be better? Still, sleep doesn't give the energy saving advantages as hibernation.
power savings (greening our labs) for our Windows 7 labs. These systems are part of a large Windows Domain. Currently we run a 'sysctl' task at night (written in Perl) that does various things like archiving Event logs, random nightly reboots (a random period between 0 and 4 hours so not all the thousands of systems are rebooting at the same time), etc. What I'd like to have happen once all that has run and the system boots up is to put the system into hibernate mode until some prescribed time in the am (before classes start, etc.).
My computer is several years old, and just a few weeks ago started having a problem waking from standby. Up until now, it had no issues going into and coming out of sleep. Now, whenever it goes to sleep (whether due to inactivity or putting it to sleep manually), it won't wake up. The lights come on, the fans come on, but the monitor stays in standby. I've looked around online and found that many people get a black screen when booting up, i.e. the monitor comes alive and they may get a mouse cursor, but that's not what's happening to me. I don't get a black screen--my screen is never getting a signal from the computer. I have to do a hard reset, after which I get the 'Start Windows Normally' screen.I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the graphics drivers, changing hybrid sleep settings, using hibernate instead of standby, uninstalling random programs, etc, to no effect. I don't think I had any major windows or driver updates that caused it.
Bought a GW DX4860, it comes preinstalled with Win 7 and I have it hooked up to a Dell (S2240M) monitor. I noticed that once the PC goes into hibernate (Power led is blinking) that I can not wake it with keyboard (USB) or Mouse (USB). The only way is to hold down the power button for a while. Then the screen pops up saying that I did not shut window down propoerly - probably because I hard booted the PC.
Windows 7 will will shutdown if I hold down the power button, however it will not shutdown when manually hitting "Shutdown" or just pushing the power button once.Everything looks normal when it's shutting down, it says it's shutting down. The lights on the case and fans go off, the fans shut off, yet a few seconds after the fans shutdown completely, the computer magically starts back up again. So it does shutdown (technically, all the signs are there) but it starts back up.Aside from the shutdown feature not working, sleep doesn't work (I don't use hibernate because I don't want to waste SSD write cycles). When I put the computer into sleep mode, it shuts down the fans and lights, however just like the shutdown issue, the computer powers itself back on (wake on LAN is off). Even though it is powered on, it isn't out of sleep mode. None of the peripheral devices work and I can't get the monitors to turn back on, therefore I have to hard boot the computer by holding down the power button. When I turn the computer back on, it is back where I left it before I put it into sleep mode.
I have seen a lot of these topics around, but I can't see to find any that answer the question.

I recently built my first PC - AMD FX8350 on an Asus M5A88M motherboard. Running Windows 7, set up mostly as default. Newest drivers on everything.
The sleep functionality (using the default Balanced mode) had been working fine as far as I could tell. I'd walk away from the computer for a while, or leave it on overnight, and come back to find it asleep. A few taps on the keyboard or a push of the flashing power button would wake it up.
Recently, I've been having trouble waking the computer from longer sleeps (overnight). Nothing seems to wake it - the mouse, the keyboard, or the power button - I get no fans or anything, the system seems locked up tight. I actually have to switch off the power supply and then turn it back on. Only after that can I hit the power button and it resumes. For short sleeps (a couple of hours), everything works as it should.
I only have it set to sleep after 30 minutes (hybrid sleep actually). I have hibernate set to never. Monitor turns off after 10 minutes. Hard drives off after 20 minutes. These are the default settings for Balanced. As far as I can tell, there should be no difference to Windows if the PC has been sleeping for 1 hour or 12 hours, there are no different settings that kick in after a longer period of time.
Recently I converted from a PS/2 to a USB keyboard - that's been the only change. When I run powercfg, it shows the mouse, keyboard, and Realtek device (presumably the power button) as the ones that would wake the computer.
This is now my third time with this problem, the first required me to restore to factory settings. These last two seem to have been triggered by a power flicker at my residence. The power momentarily flickered long enough for my computer to shut down. After booting the computer seems fine until approx 5-10 min later it will enter sleep mode no matter what I am actively doing on the pc. I fixed the second time with a restoration to two days before the incident. This time I restored to that same point and it still has the problem. Power settings are on high performance with sleep and hibernate set to never.
My Windows 7 is:- x64 Home Premium SP1- the original installed OS on the system.- an OEM version. Came pre-installed on system.- The age of system (hardware) is 8 Months.- The age of OS installation is 8 Months.- Never re-installed.Hardware is:Sony VAIO VPC-EB46FXIntel Core i5 CPU M480 @2.67GHz
I've been having a problem with Windows 7 recently on my new computer that I just got a couple weeks ago. The problem is that my computer will have a blue screen error when waking from sleep mode. I don't see the blue screen at all, instead, when waking from sleep mode, I see the BIOS screen and then it goes through the typical startup process as if the computer had been powered OFF instead of put into sleep mode (however, I know it was properly in sleep mode, as the power light on my tower flashes continually rather than shutting off during this mode). I get the message that Windows did not shut down properly and have the option to boot into safe mode, etc. When I boot back into normal mode I receive a message in Windows saying windows has recovered from an unexpected shut down. [code] However, when I tried to install the hotfix, I was given the message "This update does not apply to your system", which I have read may be an indicator that the update has already been installed? I have run Chkdsk on drive C successfully, and I have installed every available windows update as of today (Apr 14, 2012)
I am running Windows 7 Pro x64 and I am having an issue where my computer goes into sleep mode, fails to wake from sleep, strangely resumes its state once I do a cold restart, and then after restarting again, refuses to boot.Computer goes to sleep based on the time set in the Balance Power options scheme. Fine. Often, computer wakes up perfectly fine from moving the mouse or pressing a key. Fine. Very occasionally however, upon waking up the computer, the lights, keyboard lights, fans and everything else except for the display comes on. I am forced to do a cold shutdown by pressing the reset button. Upon booting up, Windows displays "Restarting Windows" rather than "Starting Windows" and resumes its state when it went to sleep. Strange but OK. Everything seems to work normally. The problems come in when I then do a shutdown or restart after it has resumed from the cold shutdown. The computer shuts down perfectly fine but during the next boot, freezes right during the animation of the windows logo and immediately restarts the computer and launches into the DOS-looking prompt asking whether I want to do a Startup Repair because the computer failed to boot.
I have tried Startup Repair from HD and from the Windows disc and neither have done anything. I am usually forced to just reformat everything and start anew. This problem recently started occurring after I installed an Intel X-25m 120GB ssd and put the Windows partition on it. I'm not sure if that's related to the problem. Also, all of my power options are set to the Windows default.
My hardware is:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 factory 2.4Ghz RAM: Corsair Dominator DDR2 4x1GB HDD: Intel X25m SSD 120GB (Windows) + Seagate 400GB HDD (everything else) Mobo: Intel DG965OT Video: ATI HIS Radeon HD 5770
I've got it to work flawlessly on my desktop, however on my laptop, a Dell D630, I can't seem to get it to work. I've created a task triggering on a specific time and running the operation '/c "exit"', which should just start a command prompt and close it again. I've set it to "run with highest privileges" and "wake the computer to run this task". However, it just doesn't boot as scheduled.
The history of the scheduler says nothing at the moment that the trigger is set to go off, but a minut later (probably when I manually boot) I get a "Task scheduler "{....}" instance of the task "Wakeup" due to a time trigger condition."
My Windows 7 64-bit laptop crashes when I return to my computer after sleep/hibernate.
I cannot set up symbols on MS debugger (after many attempts) I have attached screenshots of cpu-z (both tabs) and my event viewer which lists 24 critical failures, all event ID 41: "The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly."
p.s. Dunno if this is important but the machine is a Sony Vaio but I have uninstalled all sony bloat ware (except Vaio Control Center)
I have a dell XPS1702x laptop Windows 7 64, this problem came up in the last 5 days after I installed a logitech M705 mouse and software. When ever I put my laptop in sleep or hibernate and start up again I get a blank screen, but the laptop seems tobe running I have to turn the computer off and then on again using the power button. My computer then restarts and opens in the Error Recovert Screen stating that the computer was turned off improperly and ask if I want to restart Windows. I have preformed a complete Virus scan with Nortons 360, I have updating all my software, uninstalled the mouse and returned to my old mouse and the software for the new mouse and the problem is still there.
I have been trying to make my computer go into hibernation but it comes out of it 5 mins later. I have tried everything. disabling mouse to wake up, turning off power management on lan, turned off wol, and disk defragmentor.
I've got a new ASUS gaming laptop with Windows 7 64-bit OEM and I've been getting a few BSOD errors while bringing my laptop out of sleep/hibernate. Its not always but its often enough to be a nuisance. My drivers are all up to date
I have two new laptops (an HP and a Gateway) with Win 7 Pro on each, and set up exactly the same. On the Gateway, the sleep and hibernate work fine.On the HP, the sleep and hibernate are greyed out.Using cmd: powercfg -a The Gateway shows " the following sleep states are available ... Standby (S3),Hibernate Hybrid Sleep"..The HP shows "sleep states not available..system firmware does not support standby state" "legacy driver vgasave .. prevents this standby state"..How can I get my HP to support sleep/hibernate?
Is this possible? I have my hard drive on my laptop truecrypted. So when I wake it up from hibernate I have to enter my password at the bootmanager, and then a windows password when I log in, too much work. Especially when the bootmanager password is like 30 characters and the windows one is like 20. So is there a way to only ask for a password from sleep but not from hibernate?
my system (ASUS A6Va laptop) I have trouble with sleep and hibernation. Computer can enter sleep mode normally, but when I wake it up I get the black screen and have to hard reset. Now I know this a somewhat common problem with no universal solution, but the more interesting problem I have is with hibernation. When I choose hibernate option computer tries to go to hibernate mode but after some time (not longer than 20 seconds) it just gets back to login screen with my session active. The interesting part of all that is that my hiberfil.sys file is smaller than my RAM. It is only 1.4 gigs in size, when I have 2 gigs of RAM. I tried disabling and enabling hibernation but it's still only 1.4 gigs big.
I upgraded to Windows 7 when it was first released and for some reason cannot use the sleep function. My power options in the control panel are set to "Balanced." I've opened up every menu I can think of and changed the settings but can't figure out why I can only use hibernate.
2 hour hibernation for both CPU and monitor worked perfectly for about two weeks, waking up with a touch to the spacebar. Then a few days ago the monitor would not wake up but the computer did. Now if I turn off the AC .
power to both units and then re-boot the monitor will turn on but will go back to sleep in about 15 minutes with the blue light blinking. The computer will complete a DL or backup with monitor sleeping so it appears OK.
Checks so far:
1. Updated drivers for both monitor and video card with latest available. Also updated chipset and BIOS (504).
2. Swapped monitors between computers and the problem went to the second monitor. Main monitor worked all day on second computer.
3. Spoke to ASUS tech support and was told that the monitor is controlled by the OS. Suggested I enable ACPI 2.0 support (default disabled) and disable ACPI APIC Support (default enabled) in BIOS. Won't boot to OS when ACPI APIC Support disabled.
4. Found a few similar cases on the Internet but no solutions.
5. Even tried turning off hibernation and setting monitor timeouts in the Powercfg using CMD prompt.
6. Re-installed OS, big mistake as it took several hours to get re-registered.
some time recently my desktop stopped "sleeping" whenever i am not at my desktop I always put it to sleep (trying to save power on a 1200watt PSU) Yet recently when I set it to sleep my display will turn off but all my fans and lights etc are still running. The same goes for hibernate mode as well. With this I have to fully shut down my PC a couple times a day which isn't my ideal situation
I got my laptop a few weeks ago and noticed that it will sometimes go into hibernate, and other times it will not, and instead hang on a black (but enabled/on) LCD. When you touch the keyboard, it even makes Windows 7 dings for incorrectly pressed key (meaning the OS is still on). If it is going into sleep or hibernate due to low battery and this error happens, it will just keep beeping really loudly at me until the laptop dies (I'm assuming that's the motherboard's part, though).I have no idea what to do, and I'm really freaking puzzled right now. I've already tried turning hybrid sleep on and off, and neither of them yielded any positive results. Anyone have any clue what I should do?
PS: I've noticed last night after gaming for a bit, that the fans remained in a full blast state (yes, even when the game is closed). This might be related to it although I am not sure. Also, I cannot upgrade my video drivers because the graphics are integrated with the Intel Integrated Graphics, meaning the drivers are made by the manufacturer.
Here's my laptop specifications by the way:
-1920x1080 LED Backlit Display -2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon 7970m -Intel Core i7 3720QM Quad-Core Processor (2.60GHz), 6MB Cache -8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz (2 X 4GB) -Genuine MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit Edition -Slot 1: 256GB Samsung 830 Series - Solid State Drive -Slot 2: 500GB SATA 3.0Gb/s, 7200RPM, 16MB Cache HDD -Integrated High-Definition Audio with THX TruStudio Pro and up to 7.1 Channel support -Wi-Fi Link 802.11A/B/G/N Wireless LAN Module with Bluetooth - Up to 300 Mbps -SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Ports
It's my first time posting! I've been browsing this forum and many sites on google trying to find the solution to my problem, but I can't really understand what is going on, even when taking a look at the dump file. I ran memtest, did all the usual things, but no sign of source of error to pin point. Every single time I put my laptop to sleep and keep it like that for longer amount of time (I think it's about 20 minutes) I can't get my laptop back from sleep in a normal fashion. What I mean is, that the screen never turns back off, stays completely black, my external monitor doesn't turn on either, just goes to idle mode. After reboot I get a message that there was a blue screen error and I can try to look for solution online. I read that my SSD HDD might be the cause of it, but after updating the firmware the problem persisted and after looking at my memory dumps, I found out that DirectX kernel is causing the problems, but updating it didn't yield any results, the problem persists, so perhaps I am missing something in the dumps that aren't that obvious to spot.My RAM aren't stock that came with computer, both chips 4GB each are aftermarket ones, but I have no issues with anything when using the computer except when it is waking up and MEMTEST didn't throw me any errors after an overnight pass.
