Switching Boot Drive From SSD To HDD?

Feb 5, 2012

I built my computer the other day, and I had not planned to have an ssd at all, but somehow ended up getting a 64 gigabyte Samsung SSD. It is very fast, which is good for the boot, and i just told myself i would put all programs on the HDD. I did that, Windows installation took up like 25 gigs, and since then I've been watching the disk space slowly drop. without even putting anything on it. So i need to switch the boot drive to the HDD, i dont know how to do this. Can i just copy and paste the entire ssd onto the HDD? or do i need to install windows on the HDD. how exactly can i accomplish this. I actually prefer this solution because this way i can have all my more used (large) programs on the ssd operate very quickly and just have to have a longer boot time. If you are going to try and change my opinion

Lose HDDs (boot Hangs At DVD Sniffer Boot) After Switching To AHCI?

Apr 10, 2011

Win 7 x64 Home Premium w/Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P, v.1.1 (P45), works great in IDE mode. (N.B.: eSATA port is just regular SATA port w/cable as provided by Gigabyte.) Trying to install external eSATA HDD. First I enabled AHCI drivers via registry. Then I turned on AHCI in BIOS. When I save BIOS and reboot, boot hangs when DVD writer performs sniffer boot, i.e., HDDs aren't found.

Switching D Drive Back To C Drive After Computer Crash/

Mar 26, 2012

The computer I'm having a problem on is a HP G6- 635 DX Windows 7 x64. About a week ago I decided to disable a few startup items because my computer took too long to load up. I think I disabled something that I shouldnt have because the next time I restarted I had gotten stuck on the "Starting Windows" screen. After I couldnt fix that problem I decided to just use the System Recovery option, so I popped out my hard drive and put it into an HDD enclosure and backed up my music/video files onto my other computer (Windows Vista Home Premium). When I plugged my hard drive back into the laptop I got the "bootmgr is missing" screen. I've tried all the command prompt steps to try and fix the bootmgr, they arent working but I think thats because my computer is automatically booting from the C: drive (which has no files in it and is about 200mb in size), and my D: drive is 285 gb and has all of the folders that used to be in the C: drive (Program Files, Users, Windows etc). Theres also another drive titled "Recovery" with the size of 13 gb

No Boot After Switching HDD Sata Order On Mobo?

Aug 29, 2011

After putting in a second GPU -- which now covers 3 of my Sata ports -- I was forced to switch my drive order around. I was able to boot successfully with 2 of them, but oddly not 3. So I removed my System Reserve drive, setting C: to the active drive, figuring that would clear things up. Then plugged in my 3rd drive into that spot leaving just 2 drives, but windows still does not boot.I checked boot order in BIOS, but I still get boot error.Windows will only boot when I remove the drive leaving only the OS drive.I know a reinstall will solve my problems, but I need to avoid that at all costs.

Switching From 'dual Boot' To A Single Partition Windows 7

Jul 28, 2011

I'm trying to install a new hard drive and retire my current one to backup and data storage purposes.

The problem is that I've installed Windows 7 on a hard drive with 2 partitions, an old XP partition (D:) and the new W7 partition (C:). At the moment the disk management screen looks like this:

What I am trying to do is delete the D: partition, and then copy/resize the C: partition including Windows 7 installation to my new hard drive (F:)

If I ignore the new hard drive and just try to migrate to a single partition, I can never get it to boot. I tried using Partition Wizard to set the C: as a primary, active partition, copied over the bootmgr and boot directory, then used bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot to try to make Windows 7 bootable from just the C:, but it didn't work. All I got was "disk read error" whilst the PC was trying to boot off the C: (this is with all other drives disconnected...).

I could try to migrate to a single bootable partition from a 'dual boot' configuration?? I tried this video's advice and did everything as instructed but got the disk read error problem.

I have already transfered files from my old PC to my new PC using a Windows Transfer Cable & software. Do I have to perform any changes to the External Hard Drive before I hook to the New Windows 7 PC? I am not sure if I should just hook the external hard drive to new PC and see what happens or what?

For eg.. normal speakers device for my personal account and then have my multichannel device (profire 2626) set as default for my other user account 4 studio work.

Atm, if i change it on one account it changes on the other account which is annoying and i'd just like to set default device for each account so i don't have to do this.

Installed New SSD Boot Drive, Want To Repartition Existing Drive

Mar 23, 2012

I have a partition question and after scouring the Web, can't find anyone with the exact same situation as mine. Basically what I'm wondering is if I can delete a primary partition and then extend another, non primary into that space.

Here's what I have and why I want to do this: my laptop came from the factory with one 500GB SATA drive, split into two partitions (C, primary, and D, logical, each 250GB). The Win7 install was on the C drive. Recently, I installed a 120GB SSD as a second drive, and using the tools with it, copied the contents of my existing C partition to the new SSD, and then made the SSD the boot drive labeled as the C drive. So far so good, everything works fine.

Now, what I'm left with is this: C: 120GB (SSD, now the boot drive with the Win7 install) D: 250GB (SATA, the original D partition, Disk Management IDs it as a logical drive, extended partition) E: 250GB (SATA, the original C partition, Disk Management IDs it as a primary partition)

So, I have the original "C drive" on E now... it's no longer the system/boot drive. Obviously I don't need the files on it as they are all on the new SSD. What I want to do is to delete all those files and then combine what's on D and E into one 500GB D drive as I have no reason to have the two partitions. Is it possible to just delete the E partition and then extend the D partition into the unallocated space? I'm confused because it seems as though the D partition may rely on the E partition being there since the E drive IDs as primary. Or would the D partition become primary?

I know I could just back up the D partition to an external drive, delete both D and E partitions, and reformat as one new D and restore the files, but I don't want to create more work for myself if I don't have to. Obviously I don't want to mess up the files on the D drive though, which is why I'm asking.

Dual Boot Issue With ' Boot Drive '

Apr 26, 2009

ok so im having a weird problem thats probably very easy to fix.

background info: before my Windows 7 install i had 3 partitions

vista 64

xp 32

empty (soon to be linux)

when i downloaded the newest win 7 build i deleted my xp 32 partition and installed Windows 7 on that partition. because Windows 7 creates that "reserve partition" or what ever, it extended my EMPTY partition with my vista partion. which cause it to become a "logical drive" rather than a "boot" drive. aka i cannot figure out how to access my vista OS.. rather annoying since im just toying with Windows 7 atm.

Windows 7 Will Not Boot When The Boot Disk Is NOT In The CD Drive

Jul 24, 2010

2 months ago, I installed windows 7 pro with no problems at all. Fast forward to today, I decided to reformat because the boot would get stuck in the middle of trying to boot into windows, it wouldn't flash the windows logo. I didn't think much of it so I just reformatted. This is where my real troubles began. So I reinstall windows 7 pro with no problems (the boot disk is in there the cd drive the entire time) I install my programs and what not and install my updates. All 100% Fine. Then I take out the boot disk and restart again... and I get this error message saying:

Nvidia Boot Agent 229.0525
Copyright 2001-2005 Nvidia Corp
Copyright 1997-2000 Intel Corp

Client Mac Address: 00 30 1B BC1F59 GUID: 12973077-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFF DCHP....

Then I press escape, then it says this:

PXE-EA0: Network Boot Canceled
PXE-M0F: Exiting Nvidia Boot Agent
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

So the first time I got this error, I just thought, Oh, something must have happened no big deal, so I reformatted again and again. But I kept on getting the same exact error. It'll load into windows just fine when my install disc is in the cd drive, but when I take it out, that error pops up. *My windows is authentic, each time I have been able to validate my copy.* I have tried installing from my hard drive and from the install disc with same error.*

This is my current set up:

Shuttle XPC SN27P2 (Barebone) Comes with motherboard, PSU, and case.
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+ @2.6GHz 65W
PNY XLR8 GTS 250
OCZ Reaper Memory 4GB PC-6400 DDR2-800
WD 74GB Raptor
WD 640GB Internal
WD 2.0TB Internal

Logitech G15 + MX518 + FuncPad 1030 Blk on Blk
Sony Optirac 18x DVD-/+RW drive
Dual Samsung SyncMaster 225BW 22" LCD Wide Screen Monitors

So how can I get windows to boot up with out having the boot disk in the cd drive...It worked the very first time I installed windows 7 on my PC...

Got a lot of questions though. I've been using 64bit OSs other the Windows and they all seem to have various problems with drivers and most of all running 32bit programs.

How does it all look on Windows? i.e. i'm using Adobe Master collection cs4 and am wondering if it will work with windows x64... what about antiviruses, Flash etc?

Ps. Is anyone using the x64 on acer aspire 69xx series? If everything running OK?

Application Switching

May 21, 2009

So I have windows 7 RC1 installed. Generally I never do task/application switching using windows but I recently installed a wacom pen tablet and one of the shortcut keys on the tablet was programmed to switch to various applications... BUT IT DID IT IN A WAY I HAVE NOT FOUND IN Windows 7 YET!

Usually Alt+Tab gives you the generic windows task switcher that shows all the icons of the various apps you have open.

But the pen tablet used an app switcher that did this..

http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/49679/win7application.png

Its a screenshot of every open window you have open and you can cycle through them til you get to the one you want.

Any idea what the shortcut keys are to access this application switcher?

Switching Monitors

Sep 19, 2009

Since I am a musician, I must practice at home and with the modern hardware it became impossible to have total silence in the room, specially a small one. Tried everything an after all, my solution was radical but very effective: My cpu is in my living room with my LCD TV and a keyboard and mouse and, after drilling a wall, I have a LCD monitor, keyboard, mouse, USB hub and a USB CDRom in my studio.

This is perfect because I have total silence to practice and a Home Theater PC in the living room. Under windows XP using the NView software I was able to create a hotkeys combination(ctrl+y) that allowed me to switch monitors without any confirmations, right clicks or dropdown menus. Just click those two keys together and that's it. Now, not even a MultiDisplay Wizard is available.

Sorry for writing so much, but here is the question: How can I switch monitors like I use to do? Is it possible to create a shortcut or hot key or, in a worse case, use the usual way in windows seven but in a way that a confirmation is not required? When I change resolution asking to show only in one of the screens I must run to the other room the confirm the change.

This is the main reason I did not install Vista, but I hope it will be a solution in Windows 7.

Switching From OS X To Win7

Dec 31, 2009

Recently, my Quad G5 mac fried (power pc chipset) and I'm building a new Windows 7 system. I'm trying to figure out the best and fastest way to move all the data from my OS X drives (1 500 gb with files/apps, 1 1 tb with files, 1 external 1 tb with files) on to newly formatted Windows 7 drives.

Furthermore, I would like to install Win 7 on the 500 gb.

My initial thought is to boot the new, fresh system from a Linux disk and move all the files within Linux. Something like this:
In Linux:

1. Move all the files I want to keep from the 500gb on to the 1tb, then format the 500 gb for Win 7.

2. Move all files from old 1tb to new, clean 1 tb

3. Format old 1 tb

At this point, I should be ready to install Win 7 on the 500gb, and have a properly formatted 1 tb with my old files and a clean, formatted 1 tb.

I have no experience with Linux, but it is my understanding that I can mount any/all disks in Linux in order to do the file management and transfer that I need to do.

A few last thoughts...the Mac was the only only I had owned since my Apple IIc so I'm not a stranger to Windows by any means. That is to say, I'm not an overly ignorant mac user jumping in over his head. However, I have not used Windows 7 at all.

So...any thoughts?

1. Can Linux do what I think it can?
2. Is this a good idea for a workflow?
3. Do I even need Linux to do this?

Whenever I switch accts, my Broadband connection shuts down. You can start it up again after the switch with no problem. I would prefer, however, to have it stay connected during the switch, as this would just make my life easier. For instance all users connect to the same torrent software, and I have the files for it synced. So, no matter who is logged in, the torrent info is the same. When the connection drops, the torrent software has to reload all the DHT info. I have googled this, to no avail. I assume it is a matter of where the BB Modem Drivers are installed?? Or maybe a Registry tweak. At any rate, I am at a loss as to how to do it, but I am sure it can be done.

McAfee Firewall Keeps Switching Off?

Nov 24, 2012

My apologies for reposting this but the main forum has been swamped by rugby spam and I think my post (which, uniquely for me on this forum, has not had a response) has disappeared beneath the radar.I have Windows 7 with pre-installed McAfee anti-virus. A few days ago it started warning that my computer was at risk and that I needed to switch on the firewall; I haven't timed it very accurately, but it seems to switch to off again in anything between 30 minutes and 1 3/4 hours.Have tried to find solution on internet but generally couldn't understand the suggestions as they were too technical for me. I have, however, performed a full scan with McAfee, Malwarebytes and Eset. What little that was found and removed has not sorted it. I also failed to find Windows Firewall.A supplementary question if nobody can answer the main one, as a temporary fix, would it make sense to install free ZoneAlarm firewall or will this cause conflicts?

Hotkey For Switching Software?

Just found out something really cool and useful. It's like 3D flip but better, as all the active windows become smaller but are facing forward, which makes it easier to choose the needed one. When you point them with your mouse, it shows the software/folder name.I know the alt + tab and win + tab combos, but there has to be some for this one too I guess. Haven't found it even though I tried searching the Interner for hotkey guides. The way I found this option was when I was using my Logitech mouse on my laptop, and started customizing the mouse buttons... I found a button command "switch between software", chose it, and found this option out. How can I do the same thing without my mouse, just using some keyboard combo? Here's a pic of how it looks. Originally Microsoft Word was on top, after pressing the button all the windows were resized and placed next to each other.
