Installed New SSD Boot Drive, Want To Repartition Existing Drive

Mar 23, 2012

I have a partition question and after scouring the Web, can't find anyone with the exact same situation as mine. Basically what I'm wondering is if I can delete a primary partition and then extend another, non primary into that space.

Here's what I have and why I want to do this: my laptop came from the factory with one 500GB SATA drive, split into two partitions (C, primary, and D, logical, each 250GB). The Win7 install was on the C drive. Recently, I installed a 120GB SSD as a second drive, and using the tools with it, copied the contents of my existing C partition to the new SSD, and then made the SSD the boot drive labeled as the C drive. So far so good, everything works fine.

Now, what I'm left with is this: C: 120GB (SSD, now the boot drive with the Win7 install) D: 250GB (SATA, the original D partition, Disk Management IDs it as a logical drive, extended partition) E: 250GB (SATA, the original C partition, Disk Management IDs it as a primary partition)

So, I have the original "C drive" on E now... it's no longer the system/boot drive. Obviously I don't need the files on it as they are all on the new SSD. What I want to do is to delete all those files and then combine what's on D and E into one 500GB D drive as I have no reason to have the two partitions. Is it possible to just delete the E partition and then extend the D partition into the unallocated space? I'm confused because it seems as though the D partition may rely on the E partition being there since the E drive IDs as primary. Or would the D partition become primary?

I know I could just back up the D partition to an external drive, delete both D and E partitions, and reformat as one new D and restore the files, but I don't want to create more work for myself if I don't have to. Obviously I don't want to mess up the files on the D drive though, which is why I'm asking.

Existing External Hard Drive Installed In New Case, Does Not Recognize?

Jan 2, 2012

I use an WD external hard drive (1TB) for additional storage and it was working fine with no issues. The small USB connector broke off the board yesterday and I purchased a new enclosure and installed it. Now my computer does not recognize it as a storage device. I have all the data still on the HD and really do not want to loose it. I tried adding a letter for the drive, but it does not show up to change the letter of the drive.

Repartition Hard Drive / Combine Partitions

Oct 22, 2011

I have a desktop PC with confused partitions (see image below).

1) C: 62.50 GB NTFS (3 GB free speace, about 2%, that's a problem)
2) 8 MB unallocated
3) "Add to C2" 66 MB NTFS
4) 39.97 GB Free space
5) D: "Data" 195.54 GB NTFS

I'd like to combine 1, 2, 3, and 4 into one partition. And then repartition in a way that allows me to install Linux (two ext3 partitions? one for swap disk?).How can I do that? Is that complicated with GParted?

Installed Windows 7 On One Hard Drive / But It Seems To Need To Boot

Dec 12, 2011

I have a computer with two (IDE ribbon cable) hard drives. One had a bad windows XP installation on it. I installed Windows 7 on the other. I formatted the drive before installing Windows 7.Then, I decided I want to use the hard drive with the bad winXP installation on it, in another computer (I will format it). When I opened the computer side panel, I wasn't sure which hard drive was which, so I unplugged the power to one, and started the computer. The thing is, it won't boot Windows 7 with either of those hard drives alone, only when both are plugged in. With HD #1 disconnected, it says "Can't find BOOTMGR, press a key to reboot." With HD #2 connected, I get asked whether I want Windows 7 or an older OS, and when I choose Windows 7, I get an error message, something like "Windows 7 failed to start. To try and repair, insert install disc, or use recovery mode, etc" With both HDs, I get asked the same question, "Windows 7 or an older OS," but when I choose Windows 7, it works. In my computer, I have verified that Windows 7's files are on one disk, and corrupt winXP files on the other.

Windows 7 Will Not Boot With Second Hard Drive Installed

Jan 21, 2013

I have a Machine with the Following Config:

Intel E2180 CPU
2GB Ram
Gigabyte GA-G31M-S2C Mainboard
Seagate ST31000340NS SATA Hard Drive Connected on SATA0
Operating Systems:
Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit on HDD
Windows 7 Ultimate 32Bit Booting from VHD

I Installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit onto Hard Drive as Per Normal Installation Onto the Hard Drive and Installation created 2 Partitions (1 System PArt and Another for C: Drive) Everything Works Great.m I Then Installed Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit Into a VHD. Setup Created a Multiple Boot Entry into the BCD so that when I Boot it Prompt Which OS I Want, I then Used BCDEdit to Change the Descriptions of the Boot Options "Windows 7 Ultimate - 64Bit - HOST" and "Windows 7 Ultimate - 32Bit - VHD" Everything still works Great.. No Problems.. Been Like this for a While Now and Perfect.

Now the Problem is that I Need to get some Data From and Old SATA Drive. I Shutdown .. Plugin the WD1600AAJS (160GB) into Another SATA Port (SATA1).. Turn Machine on and Press Delete to Enter Setup for Bios.. Goto Set Boot Device Priority and Ensure that the ST1000340NS Drive is at the Top (1st Priority).. Exit and Save Settings.. PC Goes through POST and Then Will not Boot.. it Gives "Missing Operating System" Shutdown Remove WD1600AAJS Drive.. Boots Perfect.. Reattach WD 1600AAJS Drive and "Missing Operating System" Tried Using "F12 to Select Boot Option" during POST to Select Boot Device.. Choose ST1000340NS ... and Still same Issue.. Remove the WD1600AAJS and Boots No Prob Off the ST1000340NS.

I thought that maybe it was the WD Drive.. so Tried another Seagate Drive.. and Same Issue..

I have set Every Available Option on The Bios to Choose the Boot Device and NOTHING Works.. I have Even swapped HArd drive SATA Ports .. still no Difference.

I have an Idea there is a problem with the BCD but I Cannot Edit or Add any thing to the BCD as it will not boot with the second drive attached. And When you edit the BCD it need the second drive attached to be able to Add a BCD Entry.

Installed Win7, System Will Not Boot From Proper Drive

Oct 11, 2009

I recently isntalled windows 7 professional and I have three sata drives, one is the system drive where windows 7 is installed (C, my primary partition, the other is a storage drive (F and a drive to replace the partition (Z. My boot priority for the moment is the F: drive then the C:. This is because for some reason my C: drive, even though the system is installed on it, will not boot.

I tried several things like copying the hidden system folder in F:Boot to the C drive but that did not work. I recently did a repair install but that did not restore the boot manager. Is there a way to manually set my C: drive as my primary boot drive, without jumping through hoops, I bought the Z drive to replace the F drive and need to be able to boot without it.

Installed New Hard Drive, Windows 7 Won't Boot On Laptop

Sep 28, 2012

First, the information as it is. I had a hard drive issue that I'm working on currently, trying to recover I suppose what is a crashed hard drive. There are tons of errors on it, but that's not the question I have right at the moment, but some background.

I have tried to reinstall Windows on a brand new 2.5" Seagate 500GB 7200rpm HDD. I formatted the drive using the windows 7 ultimate installer and booted it using a USB booter made from the windows 7 download tool.

When I booted it up and tried to get it going, it gave me a hardware error saying "Windows wasn't able to configure the hardware and try startup repair" or something to that effect. I read around and it said that since my BIOS says the HD is in raid configuration that it needed some Intel Raid driver, which I installed and tried running, but it didn't seem to work. It says now "windows cannot repair this computer automatically". The problem signature is as follows:

Problem Event Name StartupRepairOffline
Problem Signature 01: 6.1.7600.16385
Problem Signature 02: 6.1.7600.16385

[Code].....

Primary HDD in the BIOS is recognized as 500GB RAID is On as well. Trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

Installed New Hard Drive On HP Pavillion Dv6 / Boot Disk Not Working

Jul 22, 2012

New to the Tech forum boards but I am having a problem with my HP Pavillion dv6t. The hard drive went bad so I installed a new Seagate 1TB internal hard drive in the notebook. Starts up fine and then it says that "No bootable device found"---insert disk press any key. The disc is in the cd rom, I went into the BIOS enabled the CD/ROM boot option. I also went into the Boot option menu and tried selecting the internal cd/dvd rom drive option and I went into the actual boot order screen and adjusted the boot order so it read the cd-rom drive first then the hard drive. I also am using the HP Application and Driver recovery DVD. I am not sure if the disc is bad or cd drive is bad. The other thought is that because it is a brand new hard drive there is no information on it for the drivers so maybe the computer is not processing the information.

Existing Hard Drive On New Motherboard?

Dec 28, 2012

I am planning to replace my motherboard and memory on my Win 7 Home premium 64b. I've been updating MBs for 25 years and now I am getting conflicting answers regarding booting existing hard drive on new MB. My present Win 7 installation was installed on my present MB. Before I have always been able to use an existing hard drive and OS on a new MB.Now when I asked Gigabyte if a reinstall would be required they said no, but the registry may be full of unneeded drivers etc which would affect performance. This seems a solvable issue using registry cleaners and editors. But I am also getting opinions that Win 7 will not boot up on a new MB and reinstall OS would be required. Considering the number of programs, some on disks others from downloads. activation keys etc, this is a major problem.

Change Drive Letter For Boot Drive?

I deleted my existing OS then created two new partitions on the same drive. Then I installed Vista on one partition and that partition was properly named "c" as ususal. When I got to "My Computer" the Windows 7 partition was labelled as "I" instead of the expected "C" which had never happend before when I did the same thing.

Windows 7 Recovery Disk In The CD Drive, Attempted To Boot Up, But The CD Drive Just Spins And Spins But Never Boots?

May 29, 2012

My HP laptop HD crashed, am trying to replace it with a Kingston HyperX 120GB SSD. I do not have Windows installation disks, only have Windows Recovery Disks. All installation instructions I have found for SSD's is for cloning, which I cannot do since the HD is deadI have installed the SSD, booted into BIOS, this simple BIOS version doesn't allow me to change anything on the HD, but it does recognize it and let me do a HD test, so it does recognize the SSD. I then put the Windows Recovery disk in the CD drive, attempted to boot up, but the CD drive just spins and spins but never boots up. I thought the CD drive might be bad, so I tried an external USB CD drive with the Recovery disk, but it does the same (just spins). I even got a new Windows 7 installation disk (from another PC) to see if it will boot from it, but get nothing but a spinning CD I have not done anything yet to the HyperX SSD, haved not formatted or partitioned it.I thought this would be done by Recovery on the OS installationThe BIOS is set up to first boot from the CD drive, so the boot order is not the issue.
