Strange Network Between Laptop/Desktop?
Dec 16, 2011
Just upgraded from a WRT54G to a wireless gateway, CiscoDCP3825.I'm using.Wired Desktop, Windows 7 Ultimate x64, name: Cyclone.Wireless Laptop, Windows 7 Home premium, name: Tsunami.Xbox 360 wireless.Laptop & Desktop are unable to connect to a homegroup. If I make it on the desktop, the laptop will not connect and vice versa.However, using sharing settings I am able to share between them still. I can access whatever through traditional means. The major problem however, is that only the laptop sees the Xbox, and the Xbox can see neither.[URL]...

My girlfriends laptop keeps getting strange shortcuts on the desktop that we/she did not want or put there.. They are just plain folder looking shortcuts and have odd names like ")." or "))/.."or ".))" ...I cant remember the names exactly but they are similar to that. We delete them and they come back in a few days. I've run the virus scans and malwarebytes scans and found nothing...

2 days ago my laptop just shut off. Battery was not dead, it was plugged in the the adapter. I have a temp monitor and it did not overheat either.When I turned it back on my desktop looked like this:All of my icons, on the desktop and in my folders look like that. I did a thorough virus and malware scan and nothing came up.

3 computers 1 with Windows 7, 2 others with Vista. On my main Vista machine I have drives F, G, I and K shared. I can see and connect to each share on my Vista laptop. But the Windows 7 machine can access the main Vista computer, display all the shares.
But I can only access the shares for Public and K share. F, G and I shares give me the message "Windows cannot access computerf ", you do not have permission to access.... " etc. I have double and triple checked the settings for the shares on the Vista machine and I have full control on all shares set in permissions.
I've read as many threads as possible, but they all either do connect or don't. I'm in between as the Windows 7 machine will connect to some shares, but not all.
Any ideas of where to start?

I seem to recall being able to share a laptop's desktop on my old XP network. The desktop was listed in Windows Explorer as are other files and folders. Apparently, not so in Windows 7.
My network includes a desktop computer and a laptop, shared in a home network. How do I share the laptop's desktop contents (so that I can place files there from the desktop computer)? Or, how do I get Windows Explorer to list the desktop as it lists other files and folders (to allow me to share it)?

Okay, so I was having some issues before with pinning network files to the explorer item on the taskbar.
I can now replicate the bug happening. I want to see if it's just my setup or windows 7, so I'd be much obliged if someone can test this out for me as well.
First Scenario
1) First map a network drive.
2) Pin it to the explorer item on the taskbar by dragging it there.
3) Open up the destiation through the jump list.
4) navigate a couple of folders down and open any file.
What you should get is the network drive is no longer pinned. However, the folder where the file you just opened resided has taken it's place.
Second Scenario
1) Navigate to a network destination through windows explorer (not a mapped drive)
2) Pin a Folder from that network destination by gragging to the taskbar.
3) Pin another folder than resides inside a folder in step 2
Result: Folder pinned in step 2 is replaced by folder pinned in step 3

I have a windows7 home laptop and a Windows XP desktop.There are connected through a wireless modem. For ages the laptop could find the desktop no worries, and then for the last month or so, the desktop disappears and reappears from the network on the laptop. At the moment I can't find the desktop from the laptop.I have gone ahead and created the same workgroup name for both computers but this has not resolved the issue.

Now then I see someone has posted a similar issue to mine but his seems more technical than mine. What's the issue you ask? I have a laptop that is running windows 7 and can view the document folder on my vista desktop but when I try to access it, it restricts me saying I don't have access. I removed the password being required to access files. I took off the shared wizard thing on the folder I want to access (on the vista desktop) that was recommended by another user on the site.
I still can't access the files on that computer but i can access from the desktop the files on my laptop (windows 7) both are on the same workgroup but I don't know what else to do.

I seem to be having crashes on my laptop as of recent, but the patterns they follow are very strange. It's almost like i'm getting a BSOD while it being used, but instead the screen just go black and all power cuts. It then reboots and starts up as usual. As far as I can tell there is no conflicting software causing this, and it happens without any pattern. Since there is no Blue Screen, I cannot give a dump file. However, on the even viewer, I see an event labeled under the critical category. Now this seems like the CPU or other internal component is overheating, But when i look at HWMonitor Pro, the CPU stays under a steady 84C under load and 60C idle. This happens in a range of occasions such as rendering videos with Handbrake to simply browsing the web. I will say this, I recently swapped out my RAM cards because the OEM one's were causing BSOD's about a month ago. If you'd like more specific information on the laptop, visit my old thread.

Here's my setup:
* I am using a Blackberry to USB tether to my desktop (internet works on pc)
*Ethernet to WAN (from PC that has internet to wifi router)
*I get DNS is not responding now from any other computer connected to the network either wired or wifi
* Set up my network as following: Tether has internet sharing turned on and connected to Local Area Connection
* Local Area Connection has IP4 configured as:
IP address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default: blank
Preferred DNS Server: 192.168.1.1 (my ethernet connection so the internet connection is sent to wifi router)I have tried everything...I mean days of effort and searching. IP6 is disabled. Microsoft Virtual is disabled.This SAME exact setup was working perfectly a week ago with an older Linksys Wifi router. Then I bought a new Linksys E2000 and because I wanted something new (Bad move). That setup no longer worked on the new router....now it no longer works on the old router.

We recently purchased a new PC with Windows 7. My wife works from home 2 days a week, and for the life of me, I cannot get the Windows 7 PC to connect to her work PC via RDC. It works just fine on her old machine, running XP Pro. I currently have the Firewall turned OFF, and also have the Firewall on my Belkin router turned off. Where do I start?

how to create your very own Desktop FTP Client using the "Map Network Drive" in "My Computer" that will allow full access to your hosting account instead of using cPanel 11 or simular. You can also drag/drop all your files/folders straight into your "Public_HTML" folder without any issues.I can assure you this is very secure and being a web developer I use this method of access constantly, this is a known method throughout the development world and most of the developers I know use this method because of it's simplicity and ease of access making life so much easier.If you have problems creating your own desktop access leave a post here and I'll try my best to help.Desktop FTP Client
1. From the desktop, click on "Start" then right click on "My Computer".
2. Click on "Map Network Drive".
3. From the screen, click "Connect to a Web site that you can use to store your documents and pictures", and then click Next.
4. Click "Choose a custom network location", and then click Next.
5. Enter the following into the Internet or network address field:
6. Enter your FTP username and account password when prompted.
Then all you do is drag/drop your files/folders that you want to upload onto your hosting/server on My Computer or Desktop and it will upload them for you.If you have any problems don't hesitate to contact me in this thread where i will try and assist you in creating your "Desktop FTP Client". Using this method is just as secure as using your own cPanel or Plesk (Any FTP Client) security.

I have a Dell XPS 8300 (running Windows 7 Home Premium) that has lost Internet access. It was fine until yesterday. It shows that it's connected to my home wireless network, but cannot acces the Internet. All our other computers (desktops, laptops & iPad - all running different OS) are able to connect.
I checked the network card, using the Windows Device Manager, and it shows that it is "working properly" and that there are no conflicting devices. What should I do next?

1. What's the difference between inputting the Remote computer's IP address and inputting the Remote computer's name? When I put in the IP, it connects fine. When I put in the name, it does not connect.
2. When I click on Desktop>Network, I see 2 names for a network computer. This networked computer has been renamed from A to B, but both A and B appear in the network. Why? And how do I remove the old name (A) from the network? I think it confuses the Remote Desktop Connection Client.

I have a desktop and a laptop (both running 7057) in my homegroup. I want to be able to run programs off of the desktop from the laptop. Is there a simple way to do this? I don't need VPN capabilities as I just want to be able to do this from inside the house. I've read through a bunch of threads here but haven't found what I was looking for. I can share files/folders just fine but can't seem to figure out how to share programs.

My desktop connects to my router via a netgear N300 wirelss USB adaptor. Also connected to my router is my media server PC which has a shared network drive. On bootup My desktop looks for the mapped network drive before it loads the USB. So it always shows the network drive as being unavailable. This is soon sorted by double clicking on the network drive icon. Is there a workaround so that the PC looks for the network drive after loading the USB network has been established?

In one particular network drive I cannot open any PDFs.
* PPT - opens fine
* JPG/TIFF/etc - opens fine
* DOC - opens fine
* XLS - opens fine
* ACCDB - opens fine
* PDF - Acrobat Reader opens and then I get a pop-up "Error: Access denied."
To open any PDF I have to drag it from the network folder onto my desktop and open it from there. I can open PDFs from any OTHER network folder; it's just one specific path and subdirectories thereof where they won't open. Doesn't matter which office computer I use, I get the same error anywhere. I have R/RX/W/M (everything but full control) on the network folder. Same permissions as everyone else in my office.
I have:
* Reinstalled Acrobat reader (no luck).
* Disabled offline files (no luck because I didn't even know what that feature was for and never used it.)
* Double-checked permissions on the directory.

I am running Windows 7 64 bit. It has been running great until today when it wouldn't boot. The Repair Disc wouldn't run and I thought that a BIOS flash I had done had gone wrong. I eventually did get it to boot but it wouldn't fully load. I decided to try removing RAM. I have 4gb in two slots. After removing one of them Windows booted fine. To check the RAM I took the second one out and replaced the first one, again Windows booted OK. I tried them both together again and I was back to Windows not loading.

Most of today, my laptop was acting fine. But after I installed the updates, something odd happened. I rebooted it to finish the updates as is expected, and when it rebooted, I got a sort of blank screen with a toolbar but with an error message that said it couldn't connect to my Windows or something like that. The error said something about Win32 being moved possibly or something. Sorry that I can't recall all of it. I rebooted again and since that time, it's been fine, although that first reboot after the error did give me a "PERSONAL SETTINGS (NOT RESPONDING) square.Any idea what could cause something like that just once?Everything seems fine now. I'm running a Dell Inspiron laptop that's about 15mo old, Windows 7, all the latest service packs. I just went over a thorough virus scan with someone in the virus area about a week ago and all was clear,will run scans again soon, should I post there again?

Something has generated a folder C:24982372e61d90cbb1511cba10 on my HDD. It's dated 26-Jun-2010 and contains 27 folders and 115 files. Most of the folders have four digit names and contain three files each, to a total of 195 MB. All the folders have the same time-stamp, as do their contents. The storage is no problem but I hate having things around I know nothing about. "Who ordered that?" applies. I don't remember a crash but it's possible. I'm guessing that it would be safe to shift the lot to the recycle bin.

Just bought a new PC. Runs Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit. I'm new to Windows 7 but have used previous Windows versions for years and years (but not Vista). And I've never seen this happen with any other operating system. Out of the box, Windows 7 sets up this "My Documents" & "Public Documents" system of folders (and the same for pictures, music and videos). And that's great for separating each user's documents and providing common folders which all users can see. But, shortly after setting my new PC up (installed a printer & some other hardware bits, installed Office & copied my document files across from the old PC), Windows suddenly renamed the "My" & "Public" versions of the documents, music & videos folders. Looking at it all via my own account (I'm admin, by the way), I had folders called "Documents" & "Documents" instead of "My Documents" and "Public Documents" (and the same for music & videos). But it kindly left me with "My Pictures" and "Public Pictures" folders. This has actually happened on two machines now. It happened on the original new PC. But the store exchanged it with an identical new machine
