Desktop Computer Disappearing And Reappearing On Network (from Laptop)?
Jan 20, 2012
I have a windows7 home laptop and a Windows XP desktop. There are connected through a wireless modem. For ages the laptop could find the desktop no worries, and then for the last month or so, the desktop disappears and reappears from the network on the laptop. At the moment I can't find the desktop from the laptop.I have gone ahead and created the same workgroup name for both computers but this has not resolved the issue.

Ok I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 and my dvd drive keeps coming and going. The drive is a TSST TS-L633B 12.7 SATA Trayload 8X DVDRW. The pc is a dual core pentium with 3gb ram. When loading a dvd the drive will show up and then shortly disappear. Sometimes it will stay longer but if i pause a dvd it will disappear again and i have to either reboot or open and close the tray to get it to recognize again. I have removed the driver from device manager and i have tried updating the driver with the latest windows 7 drivers from dell with no luck. When i try to flash the drive with the latest the driver it will be there but when opening the flashing program is disappears again. I have even gone the route of getting a replacement drive from dell and it does the same exact thing.I have gone and tried the upperfilters and lowerfilters and that did no change either. I have checked the bios and the drive shows up in the bios.

I have a folder on my desktop which I used as a temporary location for pictures and videos. Once it was empty I deleted it but every time I open my internet browser it pops up again. I am using Mozilla Firefox and have checked the download settings but this folder is not named in any path that I can see. I also checked WMP but it doesn't appear there either. The only other program I used this folder with was Movavi to convert the video files to MP4 but it's not showing up there either.

I have several users running Windows 7 enterprise, and every so often their desktop icons disappear, that is the icons they have created (shortcuts, and various MS office files) I have googled this, but the solutions offered never seem to work. They only solution I have found is to disable the UAC, but that is not really a good solution in my opinion. I am running Windows 7 professional and I have some strange happenings as well, although I have never experienced the disappearing icon issue. My issue is mostly with Adobe acrobat. I have acrobat 7.0 professional, updated as far as I can without purchasing a newer verion, and I'll be in the middle of viewing a pdf and I'll get a message that my configuration has changed and I need to re-activate my copy.

I have been running 6.1 (7600) for some time now, and in the last week or two I have been getting some bizarre behaviour. My desktop has around 50 icons, I have always had lots on my desktop. Over the last 2 weeks, I find 5 of them (always the same 5) disappearing. 1 is to a hard disk, 3 are for DVD drives and another is a game. The devices themselves never disconnect or become unavailable...I know this because I was watching a DVD full screen, and when it finished...the icons had disappeared again (including the drive I was watching).Restarting doesn't cause this to happen. When I replace the icons and reboot, they are still there.

Dell Intel Core 2 Duo Processor E7500 Computer Inspirion 545s 00 Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 6GB Memory 750GB Hard Drive The icons that I put on my desktop for 3 of the Games shown on the startup menu will not stay on my desktop. I have done "Create a Shortcut" for Hearts, Freecell, and Spider and they will stay until shutting down. When booting up the next day, they're no longer there. These are the only icons that I have this situation with. The others are fine and do stick around for me, which I'm glad.Is there a trick to getting the games icons to stay put? Is there somewhere I need to change a setting for the icons to be cleaned up like I did in XP?

I seem to recall being able to share a laptop's desktop on my old XP network. The desktop was listed in Windows Explorer as are other files and folders. Apparently, not so in Windows 7.
My network includes a desktop computer and a laptop, shared in a home network. How do I share the laptop's desktop contents (so that I can place files there from the desktop computer)? Or, how do I get Windows Explorer to list the desktop as it lists other files and folders (to allow me to share it)?

Just upgraded from a WRT54G to a wireless gateway, CiscoDCP3825.I'm using.Wired Desktop, Windows 7 Ultimate x64, name: Cyclone.Wireless Laptop, Windows 7 Home premium, name: Tsunami.Xbox 360 wireless.Laptop & Desktop are unable to connect to a homegroup. If I make it on the desktop, the laptop will not connect and vice versa. However, using sharing settings I am able to share between them still. I can access whatever through traditional means. The major problem however, is that only the laptop sees the Xbox, and the Xbox can see neither.[URL]...

I have a new Dell StudioXPS 9000 with Windows 7. The desktop shortcut icons that I create myself to run existing programs keep disappearing from the desktop all by themselves. Those that were already on the desktop when I received the computer and those that are created by new software when installed on the computer have no problem remaining on the desktop. I never had the happen with WinXP.

Usually I create shortcuts to Desktop to those items of Control Panel that I use most often (Device Manager, System, Display, Sound, etc..etc...). I do it so that I press shift and ctrl down and then drag-drop the items from control panel to desktop.Makes your life much faster especially when you install windows.I think the shortcuts usually disappear when you reboot the machine or install something new into it.

One of the staff members here is having problems with network shortcut icons disappearing at random. This is what appears to happen, User creates shortcut of network drive and copies it to her desktop. This can be accessed through Office and other programs and the link can be seen on the desktop. After a time the links vanish, even when the machine is on and not rebooted or logged.

I have my screen saver set at 15 minutes. I first noticed something odd this past weekend. The screen saver was on when I drifted off to the land of sweet dreams. Sometime during the night I woke up, looked across the room, and I saw my desktop. Other than thinking "why do I see my desktop" I thought nothing else about it. Since then I have actually seen the screen saver disappear and my desktop appear. I was on the other side of the room, not on the computer, the mouse did not get moved, and nothing happened that would cause this.
I've not been able to figure out why all of a sudden the desktop would appear. What I can do to keep the screen saver on until I want to go to my desktop? I noticed that after a while the screen saver would come back on and stay on a while before going back to the desktop. It's caught in a loop of going back and forth. In the grand scheme of things, this is not a biggie but I'd still like to know why this is happening.

We have this recurring issue where some mapped network drives disappear from 'my computer'. They usually appear after 1 or 2 reboots, but having to go through this each time is a bit annoying.Right now all our client computers are running windows 7 pro on a 2008 domain server. We've been having this issue from when we had the 2003 server and its still happening every now and then

Now then I see someone has posted a similar issue to mine but his seems more technical than mine. What's the issue you ask? I have a laptop that is running windows 7 and can view the document folder on my vista desktop but when I try to access it, it restricts me saying I don't have access. I removed the password being required to access files. I took off the shared wizard thing on the folder I want to access (on the vista desktop) that was recommended by another user on the site.
I still can't access the files on that computer but i can access from the desktop the files on my laptop (windows 7) both are on the same workgroup but I don't know what else to do.

I have a home network set up on my desktop running Windows 7. Homegroup is NOT activated. My laptop has INTERNET access from the wireless card to the router attached to the desktop, but I can't get the laptop to "recognize" the desktop computer. When I type in computer name, it tells me that it can't locate that computer.
So I can't print from my laptop, because the printer is attached to the desktop. I've tried everything I can think of -- renaming networks, etc. -- nothing has worked. The weird thing is that the laptop could find the printer last week, and I don't remember changing anything. Advice???

Just built a new system. This isn't really the most pressing of issues, but I'm curious as to why it's happening.I set my PC up to the home network, added video folders to the media center library and all that jazz, and everything seems to work just fine. Only issue is, after some time of not using it, when I go to watch something on the Xbox, my PC doesn't show up. It's set not to fall asleep, so it should be actively showing up on the network. I go into my room and reset it and it shows up just fine after that. This has happened more than once.

Why does this Box Keep Reappearing in IE 8,"A website wants to open web content using this program on your computer". keeps appearing each time a new screen opens? When I click "allow", the messagw appears again almost instantly. When I click "Don't allow", it appears again. Sometimes I have to close on the red "X" several times to get it to stop reappearing. The program is Adobe Flash Player that wants to open. [code]

The computer name of my Win7(64b) Desktop is called "AVA". For the purposes of debuging, I've disabled AVA's LAN adapter and connected it to the network by enabling its Dlink DWA556 wireless adapter. The attached system config file represents this decision. In addition to AVA I have 3 other Win7 computers and on WinXP computer on the network (all wireless) and all on the same workgroup.
In the network section of explorer (no matter which computer I am using) I see ALL the computers except AVA.If on AVA, I start the network sharing center and do a network map, I see my router in the middle, the internet on the right, and then dotted lines (showing wirless) to the left to just two computers (AVA and one other Win7 computer). Hovering the mouse over those computer icons shows me their IP4 and IP6 addresses as well as the mac address. The other Win7 computers and my networked printer show up at the bottom under the note that says "The following devices can not be placed in the map". (However those computers and the printer are still networked just fine). The winXP computer does not show up on this map.
All in all, you can see that this is a pretty successful home network. Most of the drives an all the computers are shared and explorer can easily see them (including the XP computer) and files can be transfered back and forth, with the exception of the AVA desktop. Even the AVA shared drives can be accessed however if one is willing to type in "//AVA" into explorer at which point all its shared drives can be seen. Also every computer (including AVA) can see the internet and can print.

I am using the auto-hide feature for the taskbar and every time when there's a change to one of my programs (for example somebody sent me an instant message on my messenger or a program has been downloaded on firefox) the taskbar will automatically appear with the icon of the program glowing in orange. Is there a way to prevent that reappearing action?
I have tried tweaking the registry as well as gpedit.msc but still couldn't.

I'm unable to delete a user administrator account that was created by a program on Hiram's boot disk. The user account was created to delete a password on another administrator account.I can run 'control userpasswords2' and delete the account, I can delete the account the normal way in User Accounts Control Panel, but each time I reboot, the account reappears. When I delete the account I can log off and log back on without seeing the deleted account. It's when I reboot that I have the problem.

I utilize Windows7 Home Premium 32-bit and a 500gb SeaGate FreeAgent external. Similarly, I have on numerous occasion deleted files and done some cleaning-up (primarily 'My Documents') to no real success because they all come back after having attached my external.I do not perform a Back-up /or/ Sync anything. I simply connect my external via USB in order to locate a saved document already on the external from previous. This is all I do and at some point (not sure if it is after the next reboot or when exactly) but, all deleted docs reappear.

Here's my setup:
* I am using a Blackberry to USB tether to my desktop (internet works on pc)
*Ethernet to WAN (from PC that has internet to wifi router)
*I get DNS is not responding now from any other computer connected to the network either wired or wifi
* Set up my network as following: Tether has internet sharing turned on and connected to Local Area Connection
* Local Area Connection has IP4 configured as:
IP address: 192.168.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default: blank
Preferred DNS Server: 192.168.1.1 (my ethernet connection so the internet connection is sent to wifi router)I have tried everything...I mean days of effort and searching. IP6 is disabled. Microsoft Virtual is disabled. This SAME exact setup was working perfectly a week ago with an older Linksys Wifi router. Then I bought a new Linksys E2000 and because I wanted something new (Bad move). That setup no longer worked on the new router....now it no longer works on the old router.

We recently purchased a new PC with Windows 7. My wife works from home 2 days a week, and for the life of me, I cannot get the Windows 7 PC to connect to her work PC via RDC. It works just fine on her old machine, running XP Pro. I currently have the Firewall turned OFF, and also have the Firewall on my Belkin router turned off. Where do I start?
