Stream Media Over Network - Can't Access Workgroup
Sep 4, 2011I have two pc's- one a Windows 7 the other is a xp. I have two streamers: Boxee Box and Pop Corn Hour. Through various trial/error I have determined I can't access the workgroup from both the Windows 7 and xp on either streamer. In other words, both streamers should be able to access workgroup on my network and neither can. I have tried resetting the router, both pc's, streamers etc. All files/folders set to share. I am not an expert but it seems since both streamers can't access my workgroup, the problem might be with windows.

Nov 17, 2011I have been having some trouble with File Sharing today. I have been working on setting up my media center with XBMC. All of the media and data is stored on a home server. A large percentage of the time when I try to start a movie or something, my computer will "disconnect" from the server. It will try for several seconds and then fail, or if I tell Samba (on the server) to terminate the connection. I have tried using another computer (a laptop) and it works fine, even when the trouble computer will not work. Because of this, I do not believe it is a server-sided issue. I can also browse the folders just fine until it "disconnects". The strange thing is that when this happens and until it fails, the Computer and Network folders won't load.

Jan 13, 2012Long story short I just want to connect my Windows Media Player/Center to my Xbox 360.I can't enable streaming from the Media Player. It wont show the button or option at all.I have also tried to open homegroup and turning on media sharing and it wont turn on. The button turns grey for a moment then it goes back to saying "Turn on media streaming".From the Windows Media Center I can get some kind of connectivity to the Xbox, but its very brief. Usually when I go to set up the extender it gets to building media library on the "Windows Media Center" then the "Xbox Windows Media Center" gives a failed to connect, retry or cancel.If I take a peek into the network from the explorer the media devices shows Xbox 360 Media Extender and it disappears within 3 seconds also another that says Xbox 360 which stays.I have tried going into services.msc and making sure UPnP, SSDP, Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service are enabled. I also disabled Windows Media Player/Center from the windows defaults to try and reinstall it.

This is NOT a problem with setting the icon size or themes.Minimum icon size is 16, which on Medium is larger then Classic at 32 (default). It's NOT a problem with any 3rd party programs or services.I've tested with a selective startup disabling all non-Microsoft services and startup programs. Neither is it a malware or virus issue.I've explored this to no end. I've tried "sfc /scannow" to locate any altered/corrupt/missing system files as well, all are accounted for and working properly.I need to locate the exact location for this particular setting (View: Large/Medium/Classic) and find out why it will not save appropriately. I've been to so many forums with so many different fixes and none of them work. I believe I've covered all methods I've attempted but I might have missed one. However, I share a house and there is a folder I wish to share but only to my laptop, not to the rest of my house. I can't work out a way of recognising the users on my laptop, if I try to add a new user the location is fixed on Chris-PC and if I try to change no other locations appear.

Feb 1, 2010I like to use the Desktop folder to save items temporarily, but I keep a clean desktop background with no icons displayed. This option is accessed by right clicking the desktop and deselecting View>Show Desktop Icons. I've been doing this since I was using Windows Vista. My problem is that now my Windows 7 OS never remembers this setting. Whenever I turn my computer on the icons have reappeared. Additionally, when I go to deselect the option, I have to do it twice for it to take effect. Is this a known bug? It's really annoying, especially when there may be things on the desktop you don't want others to see when you login.

Nov 9, 2012I work for a large corp which provides a standard image. I install this image, and wish to make changes particular to our area (About 8 offices)
Then burn the image for new workstations. I have been doing the desktop customization, show menus, desktop icon size, etc. I then go to C:Users and copy that customized user and rename it to default.
This works but has side effects, such as a new users default location for documents is always the original users. Plus some of our software fails. So I am now wanting to change the registry to do the same thing.
My question: Is there a way to edit the "Default User" in the registry so that it would be used for any new user? That way I could set the default registry and all new users would get those settings.
Setting Up Windows 7 Remote Desktop To Connect Via Internet
Jun 19, 2012I have setup Remote Desktop on two different Windows 7 computers and I am unable to connect to them. I have followed several examples, which are the same on setting this up, but still unable to connect. The examples show trying to connect using the computer name and user name. If you are connecting say from your office computer to your home computer, do you not have to enter the IP address somewhere or does it just connect via the computer name?
I have yet to find anywhere to enter an IP address or connect any way beside just using the computer name. I am setting this up to connect Windows 7 to Windows 7.

I setup the first users with everything they needed and then realized I would need to imitate this over 4-5 other users on the same machine. Is there a way to do this more effectively rather than by hand?
I want all users to have the same network drives (I have 6 different locations) and I want them to have the same desktop icons for accessing content.

Oct 9, 2009my girlfriends pc at her university blocks certain ports which are required by a website which she uses to watch tv online. Therefore as a work around, she bought a service which offered a VPN. This meant that she on her uni pc be connected to the uni internet, however then open a VPN connection which meant she would then be connected to this VPN and browse the internet through them whom do no block ports.
My question is could someone please advise me on how to do this, I have WIndows 7 and she has XP Pro. I tried setting up my pc as a host, allocating her a username and password and allowing incoming connections etc. however upon trying to get hers to connect to me, it just timed out and could not connect!
I would appreciate if someone could give me a step by step guide on how to set up my PC as the host and her PC as the client, in order for her to browse the internet using my internet, not her universities. I don't want remote desktop as dont want her having control and seing my desktop, just sharing my internet.

Oct 16, 2009I have a number of PCs connecting to a server where we house our personal folders. The server also houses music, basketball games, our photos, applications (like drivers and updates etc). On XP and vista I could update shell folders in registry to point each of the various locations (Like My Videos, My Documents, My Pictures etc), to a location on the server.
I updated the shell folder locations in registry only to find that it says location is unsupported because the network locations are not indexed
I have turned indexing off because it is a total waste of resources. We have everything stored on separate drives by category of item. For us, sedarching is not required, stuff is easy to find.
So how can I point the shell folders to a network location without turning on indexing?

Dec 11, 2012After my computer stopped being able to print to my printer wirelessly (the printer isn't a wireless printer, but is wired to a wireless print server), I deleted the printer and tried to reinstall via the Add Printer Wizard. The printer wizard sees the printer on the network, but when I select it to install, it can't find the TCP/IP port and installation fails. How can this be?
I *can* print from this computer to the printer when connected directly via USB, and other computers can print to that printer wirelessly.

My first issue is setting up homegroup. I can create one on any pc and see it to join on the other 2 but when I enter the password it tells me I have a network problem. I can ping each pc's ip address from the others. I have checked all the typical fixes, ipv6 enabled...
Secondly, I need understanding the network layout and how the NAS plays a role in the mapping. When I map the network it shows the 3 pcs all connected to the router and to the internet but it shows the NAS as other devices at the bottom. I have mapped a few folders from the NAS to each pc and can see as well as use them but not sure why it is not part of the map.
