Shutting Down And Restarting Laptop
Jan 30, 2012I have a habit of leaving my laptop on all the time, it's plugged into power. What is too long to leave a laptop running? How many times should I shut down or restart it?

View 9 RepliesI am new to this board so I thought the best place to start was general discussion.Ok, I have an HP laptop that has recently started shutting down and re starting itself. It offers me the option to start in SAFE MODE.I also have gotten a few messages asking that I stop running the script that I am running or I could harm my computer. Both of these things are recent on a computer running windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.I must confess that I do not understand the script message at all, but I always agree to stop using it.My computer is my life line--quite literally as I am hearing impaired

View 4 Replies View RelatedEverytime I switch on my Acer 5740 Laptop, after it reaches the POST screen displaying the Acer logo and Setup (F2) and Boot Selection Menu (F12) the laptop restarts over and over again and never stops. It has only been doing this since i installed a new program, after i installed it a blue screen appeared saying "STOP", and a bunch of other text but I couldnt make out what it said as the screen disappeared so fast. It is probably the work of a virus of some sort.I have already tried to boot from my recovery discs, but after the restoring the OS to factory settings, the same restart loop happens again. I cannot even access safe mode as it immediately restarts after displaying the acer logo. But I am however able to access the BIOS setup (f2) and the boot selection menu (f12). I know for certain that I have no hardware problems as the system was working perfectly with no errors up until I ran the program and feel that this may be the work of a virus. Here are the details of my Acer Aspire 5740 laptop that I have acquired via the Setup menu:

CPU Speed: 2260 Mhz

It started about a week ago and it is currently happening mabye once or twice a day. Some times it can go 8 hours without restarting. Or it will restart 10 minutes after turning it on.I wasnt getting any error msgs or anything, It doesnt freeze or no blue screen. Just shuts off and restarts. I unchecked the restart automatically button and last time it crashed the screen froze and made a constant beeping sound (more of a crashing beeping sound I guess). no errors popped up though. Is there a way to check the crash log so i can see an error msg or somthing?I Downloaded Everest to check my CPU's temp and it stays under 65 C. Other than this my laptop runs fine. I took out the ram seperatly and re seated it and tried running the computer and it worked fine with both ram sticks. I blew out the dust from the fan/vent a few days ago. I got a lot of dust out and its cooler but seems like its crashing more often tbh
View 5 Replies View Relatedeverytime I use the restart on windows the laptop restarts but comes up with a black screen with no lights. The only thing that lights up is the power, wifi and hardisk light. However when I press shutdown and use my finger to power on the laptop it works.

I'm using Acer Aspire 5742g (if i not mistaken) with WIN7 now...but recently my lappy keep shut down by itself..at first(a few days before it happen),it keep telling that "Dekstop Window Manger has stopped working" but when I ask my friend he said it wont make that effect to my lappy..he said it maybe because of overheating but sometimes my lappy can on for a long time but i have to on & on it again & again..I try to repair my windows but unfortunately,i cant do that because it will keep shudown by itself....when I check Device Manager,i detect that Intel(R) Management Engine cannot start..

My brother was doing something on iTunes, think unlocking a iPhone or something but when i came home and turned it on, it came up with Windows logo but then saying Preparing PC for first use and then a error comes up saying Windows needs to restart to continue installation. It restarts and does it all over again. I tried going into safe mode to do a system restore but comes up with same msg of preparing pc for first use and needs to restart. All i can think is something has corrupted the boot up and need to repair it but not sure where to go for it. There is a recovery option on the laptop from sony but that says it restores your laptop to factory settings

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a new HP dv6 laptop. The operating system is windows 7, 64 bit. I've had it less than a week. The power option I have set on it (default) calls for the system to go into the sleep mode after 20 minutes(closing the lid). I don't even see any option available to select that would shut the computer down after a certain time. The problem is, after having not used the laptop for approx. 12-14 hours, when I am ready to use it again, it has shut itself down. I don't know why it doesn't stay in the sleep mode.Any ideas why the laptop is shutting down? It's not overheating because I keep it in a cool room and the air flow around it is not restricted.
Recently my Toshiba Satellite laptop which runs Windows 7 is not shutting down. When shutting down, I receive a message that there is a background program running. I have to shut down the computer using the power button. Before I shut down the computer, I close all opened programs and then I open the task manager to see if there are any applications still running and there aren't any running.

My problem is that it keeps shutting down and I cant find the problem.I dont think its overheating because I opened it up and the fan was working fine and there was no dust in the fan or heat sink but I sprayed it down with some dust off anyway. I even tried taking it outside in some cold weather to see. I tried a fresh windows 7 install but that still didn't work.It shuts off plugged in or running on battery to.
So I just bought a used HP dv7 laptop. It came with a Dell charger and was able to charge fine. I use my laptop as my home computer so its always plugged in. Since I always keep it plugged in, I removed the battery so over time it wouldnt kill the battery life. So everything runs good, but I also like to play games on my laptop. when I do my laptop shuts off. I thought it might be my laptop crashing, but I noticed that the small light on the charger was off. I unplugged the charger from the wall socket and plugged it back in and the light came back on and my laptop powered up. The charger was very very hot. So I pointed a fan at it and played the game again, but it shut off again. I thought it had to do with the dell charger and the HP laptop, So I bought a brand new HP charger. But it still does the same thing, the charger shuts off.
Is there some settings I have to change? or something wrong with my laptop?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell laptop, XPS 15, my specs are on the attached file. I used to play Diablo 3 on this laptop, highest settings possible, and it never gave me any problem. Now i quit Diablo and moved to an online game, called Atlantica Online (Atlantica Online), and then the problems started. I guess it's important to say i play this game for a very long time now (3~4 years) and never had any trouble with my old PC (a Quad-core, 4gbs ram, 1gb video), and my brother also play this game on his laptop (a i5, 4gbs ram, onboard video).
When i try to run it on my Dell, first, it started to overheat. I started monitoring my CPU and GPU temperature, and it'd go from 50C/122F (idle) to 90C/194F just a few seconds after I started the game. To solve this problem, everytime I run the game, I run this app: ThrottleStop (ThrottleStop - Performance Adjustment Tool for Core 2 / Core i CPUs) so i can 'underclock' my CPU to 75% and turn off the Turbo feature of my i7 (Note: I also tried to run the game without underclocking my CPU and it restarted anyway).
When the problem occurs, screen goes blue, sometimes purple, there are some squares, like a chess board, it's all messed up. I see the mouse still works (it moves a big square when i move the mouse) and keyboard still works aswell (capslock light). But if i try to press any button, the computer will freeze and i have to hard reset it. I really like this game (it's the only one i play actually, but if it's the game's fault, i'll stop it, just want to be sure).
I have hp i5 laptop. After it started it will automatically restart with blue screen.

My new ASUS laptop will not shut down. I saw a thread a couple of days ago where a Richc46 said to try disconnecting the internet connection and then trying to shut down and if that worked he knew how to fix it. However, the thread ended there. I tried this and disconnecting the internet connection worked.I think Richc46 said it was something to do with the device manager, but I may be remembering that wrong. All of the other shut down menu options work (hibernate, sleep, restart, etc), it just won't shut down and restarts instead.I had tried the disconnection of the internet and it worked and successfully shut down ONCE. I just tried it again and it is restarting like it had been, so it's not as easy as just stopping the internet connection.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a brand new battery in an Acer travelmate 5720. It has a BRAND NEW battery in it. at 50% power, the laptop dies as if the battery is totally drained. Will not even post to bios. Just dead.I adjusted the settings for the battery in windows to alert and shut down the computer at 50% to save whataver data is there, but this is not a good fix. There are no settings in the bios for adjusting the battery. What is going on in windows to cause this?I've read thru the threads and saw a lot of people with this problem only to be told that it's their battery or the laptop, and blah blah blah. Anything but Windows 7.
