Laptop Going To Sleep Instead Of Shutting Down?
Nov 7, 2011My laptop is refusing to shutdown.

View 1 RepliesMy pc is shutting down more and more frequently so that it now happens every time I close the lid for sleep mode. In Event Viewer there are numerous "Event 41, Kernel Power" warnings.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI did a reinstall of windows the other day, and just recently I noticed that now whenever I let the computer go into sleep mode overnight, all my active programs have closed when it wakes from sleep mode. I have looked around myself but I can't find any settings that would indicate why it is now doing this.
View 5 Replies View RelatedSo I generally download games/movies/etc at night when I sleep. Before, my old computer which ran windows XP would go sleep mode over a prolonged period of time but would still download whatever files im downloading. However I recently just got a new computer with windows 7, and every time I go to bed with something I download it seems to stall all computer functions. Whenever I'm Idle for about 30+minutes is when this happens. My monitor goes into power save mode, but my computers still on.Its as if it also shuts off my internet connection while I sleep. as downloads freeze an hour into my sleep. All online games im logged into for my bots to trade will time out in the middle of the night etc.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm just wondering if this is something abnormal. I keep my system up 24/7 just shutting off display without putting it to sleep/hibernate. Every morning when I wake up and check the kernel memory, it's quite high >500mb. I checked with a friend and his is onli about ~300. What does this mean, a memory leak?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI keep getting a message on a bluescreen, often when the cpu comes out of sleep mode, that it is shutting down to avoid damage or something. I also often have trouble getting ctrl alt del to work. Recently, we removed several viruses, and hijackers from the computer, that made it so I couldn't even google search, and its only been doing it since then. As I write, malwarebytes said it was removing threats. I have scoured everywhere I could think of and removed almost all unnecessary programs, files and downloads. Could there stll be a virus? Could a previous virus have corrupted the comp irreversibly?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a new HP dv6 laptop. The operating system is windows 7, 64 bit. I've had it less than a week. The power option I have set on it (default) calls for the system to go into the sleep mode after 20 minutes(closing the lid). I don't even see any option available to select that would shut the computer down after a certain time. The problem is, after having not used the laptop for approx. 12-14 hours, when I am ready to use it again, it has shut itself down. I don't know why it doesn't stay in the sleep mode.Any ideas why the laptop is shutting down? It's not overheating because I keep it in a cool room and the air flow around it is not restricted.
Recently my Toshiba Satellite laptop which runs Windows 7 is not shutting down. When shutting down, I receive a message that there is a background program running. I have to shut down the computer using the power button. Before I shut down the computer, I close all opened programs and then I open the task manager to see if there are any applications still running and there aren't any running.

My problem is that it keeps shutting down and I cant find the problem.I dont think its overheating because I opened it up and the fan was working fine and there was no dust in the fan or heat sink but I sprayed it down with some dust off anyway. I even tried taking it outside in some cold weather to see. I tried a fresh windows 7 install but that still didn't work.It shuts off plugged in or running on battery to.
I have a habit of leaving my laptop on all the time, it's plugged into power. What is too long to leave a laptop running? How many times should I shut down or restart it?
View 9 Replies View RelatedSo I just bought a used HP dv7 laptop. It came with a Dell charger and was able to charge fine. I use my laptop as my home computer so its always plugged in. Since I always keep it plugged in, I removed the battery so over time it wouldnt kill the battery life. So everything runs good, but I also like to play games on my laptop. when I do my laptop shuts off. I thought it might be my laptop crashing, but I noticed that the small light on the charger was off. I unplugged the charger from the wall socket and plugged it back in and the light came back on and my laptop powered up. The charger was very very hot. So I pointed a fan at it and played the game again, but it shut off again. I thought it had to do with the dell charger and the HP laptop, So I bought a brand new HP charger. But it still does the same thing, the charger shuts off.
Is there some settings I have to change? or something wrong with my laptop?

My new ASUS laptop will not shut down. I saw a thread a couple of days ago where a Richc46 said to try disconnecting the internet connection and then trying to shut down and if that worked he knew how to fix it. However, the thread ended there. I tried this and disconnecting the internet connection worked.I think Richc46 said it was something to do with the device manager, but I may be remembering that wrong. All of the other shut down menu options work (hibernate, sleep, restart, etc), it just won't shut down and restarts instead.I had tried the disconnection of the internet and it worked and successfully shut down ONCE. I just tried it again and it is restarting like it had been, so it's not as easy as just stopping the internet connection.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a brand new battery in an Acer travelmate 5720. It has a BRAND NEW battery in it. at 50% power, the laptop dies as if the battery is totally drained. Will not even post to bios. Just dead.I adjusted the settings for the battery in windows to alert and shut down the computer at 50% to save whataver data is there, but this is not a good fix. There are no settings in the bios for adjusting the battery. What is going on in windows to cause this?I've read thru the threads and saw a lot of people with this problem only to be told that it's their battery or the laptop, and blah blah blah. Anything but Windows 7.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen my laptops battery reaches critical it will usually hibernate as all of them do. When it's switched back on it'll give you the option to do a system resume. The past 3 times it hasn't though, it has brought up the black screen saying windows didn't shut down properly, and giving me the options to start in safe mode etc.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI own an HP dv6tqe-7000 and I have a pretty annoying problem. At random times the laptop won't go to sleep when I close the lid. The HP logo light stays lit even if I leave it alone for a couple of minutes. If I open it up the screen is blank, and both the power and WiFi light are on. The mute volume LED is off even though I had left it on before. The only thing I can do is hold down the power button to reset it.
I have no idea what causes this. Sometimes the laptop takes a lot longer to sleep than usual as well, up to a minute. I don't think this was a problem when I first got it about 3 months ago. The problem has been apparent for about a month now.
I tried updating the drivers to both the dedicated and integrated GPU, but unfortunately it still showed the same result. I know I updated my BIOS awhile back, but I don't know if that's the problem. I also bought a Logitech USB mouse I bought 2 months ago where you are just supposed to leave in the USB receiver.
At times it will go to sleep within seconds. I wish it would do this all the time because since I'm on campus I always have to put my laptop back in my backpack.
This has happened several times during the last few days. My laptop goes to sleep by itself randomly while I am actively using it. The model is Dell XPS L502x.
View 1 Replies View RelatedToday, I installed Home Premium 32 bit (it's dual booting with Win 2K Pro) on a Dell Latitude C640. After much patience, googling and having a driver disc for this laptop, I finally finished the install. For a 2002 model laptop, it looks pretty good. The only known problem that I'm having is that it won't go into sleep mode. All of the other options are there except that. Windows 7 will install on almost anything there is, it looks like. Anyone have a suggestion for the sleep mode problem?
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy laptop wakes up for no reason after I put it to sleep. I unplugged my USB things and it still doesn't solve. When I do powercfg -lastwake it gives me this:
Wake History [0]
Wake Source Count - 1
Type: Fixed Feature
Power Button
This does not have to do with an outdated driver(Most likely) It happened when I decided to decrease the brightness.
My laptop was BSODing when I put the laptop to sleep. The dump files are attached per instruction.
View 5 Replies View RelatedHi new user here, my RTM copy used to go to standby and wake up fine but recently when I try to power it up the machine will appear to start up, but my screen, keyboard and mouse do not wake up, also my wifi light does not turn on either.
The only way to get on to my pc is to do a hard restart.
I believe this might help:

The report points to my wifi card being the source of the problem yet I have tried disabling it and the same occurs.
On my laptop, the drive is encrypted with TrueCrypt and I don't know whether it is better to have my PC set to sleep, hibernate or hybrid sleep when I close the lid. I kind of want the fastest, but most secure option though.
Also, in the TrueCrypt options menu it says Auto dismount when entering power saving mode. Is that sleep? And is dismounting when it encrypts it again?
I'm using my laptop (ASUS G73JW) with external monitor. The OS is Windows 7 ultimate 64. I set to "Do nothing" when the lid is closed and "Never" sleep in power settings. It never goes to sleep even if I'm doing nothing with my laptop for a long time. But it goes to sleep in random time when I start to play video with media player, even if I keep doing somethng with mouse or keyboard. I tested with various other media players, but symptom is the same. I'm not sure if this is the same on other laptop models/vendors. It seems like a bug is in Windows kernel drivers or ASUS specific drivers.
