Should I Get Windows 7 Or Wait For Windows 8?
Dec 2, 2011
I have a laptop with Windows Vista and have been holding off upgrading to a new version of Windows. Vista is great, but feels a little aged. Should I get Windows 7 now or wait for Windows 8?

I have tried to repair from the disk and I have tried a system restore. It will only start in safe mode without extra functionality. It happened yesterday when my power after out ran.

I've notice that Windows Update, after just installing the OS, gives you some optional updates, and those updates are the drivers for your devices, and it seems that if an update for that drivers goes out, Windows will let you know so if you want to download it you can do so. Now my question is, Is it better to go to the manufacturers website and download the latest driver manually or is it just the same to let windows search for it automatically and download them when there is an update?...

My old computer has Windows xp home premium.
I bought the student upgrade to Win 7 Pro. I got the download and I paid for the DVD.
Should I wait for the DVD? Or will the download work okay? I don't care if it reformats my hard drive.

my computer was not booting up so last night I went to the built in startup repair in Windows 7 and through the command prompt did a "chkdsk c: /f /b" which I saw online. It took about 15 hrs to get where it is at now which it finished the stage 5 and now says "Free space verification is complete." I thought that meant it finished but im assuming not because it won't let me type in the CMD box. Its been at this point for about 2 hours now and im wondering if I should try to shut down and boot up my computer or wait out until it does more. Also during stage 4 it said a couple times that windows repaired bad clusters?

I have to send my drive in to OCZ for an RMA and I asked how long it would take because I can't wait too long for the RMA to happen. So I said I could still return the drive to the store, however the tech support rep., said I could use my recovery back up and put it on another drive as long as the other components of my build are the same.

When initiate either one, before the shutdown will complete, am told that the reboot must wait because the ScreenShot Manager is still running. Now, the wait is only for a couple of seconds then the shutdown completes ... so it's no big deal - just frustrating. But I'm wondering if there is something running that shouldn't be.I do have 'Sticky Notes' running (have a couple of notes always there to remind me ... something have to do each week) and wonder if that causes the 'screenshot manager' to run.

I've had windows 7 for like 4 months now and i turned my computer on today and it was at the please wait screen for about 15 minutes so i forced shutdown by holding the power button and tried again but it will not go past the please wait screen right before the login prompt. I decided to try to run in a different mode and right now i am running in debugging services mode in which functions are limited.

It really sucks because it's a driver that, when not installed, causes me to crash all the time! I've already tried disabling Windows Security Essentials' Real-Time Protection.

I am trying to uninstall some programs on my computer but every time I try, I get this same message. Of course I have rebooted my pc, and the other more obvious issues concerning this but every time I go in and try it does the same thing. I really need to get some programs off my pc! Box that comes up that states that I have to wait for the other program to finish uninstalling before I can do another in which it never is finished. It just sits there like that.

I've got a new Samsung laptop. For about a month now whenever I boot up the laptop it says "installation may take a few minutes""please wait." The thing is it doesn't install anything at all and is a nuisance. Also I checked the windows task manager and all it says it is is a 'install'. How can I stop it?

So a couple of days ago, my PC started hanging up on a "Please Wait" loading screen in between the "Starting Windows" screen (where the Windows logo forms from coloured orbs) and the user account selection screen. Sometimes I'd leave it half an hour and it still wouldn't load.To start with, I simply gave my PC a hard reboot, and the problem would go away. When this stopped working, I system restored, and then the problem disappeared. This morning however, I performed a system restore from safe mode, and now when I boot my PC, in whatever mode, I get the "Starting Windows" screen, then the PC hangs up on a black screen with only the mouse pointer active.

Well I turned on my computer this morning, every was normal until my computer had the windows logo appear and then when the login page appears with "please wait" a BSOD appeared... So I turned off the computer and tried again, this time the login page screws up a little and then the BSOD appears again. Safe Mode won't work either as the BSOD screen comes up at the same time as when normally booted.

Background Info: Dell laptops (E6420,E6410,XPS), Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit, Connected to AD
The laptops are intermittenly hanging at the "Please Wait" screen right before the alt + ctrl + Delete option appears. The time it hangs varies. Sometimes it can hang for 2 minutes, sometimes it could hang for an hour. So far the only pattern we could find is that it happens mainly while the computers are not connected wired to the LAN and on wireless. If we toggle the wifi off during the please wait, a few seconds-mins later it finally shows the option to login. I set the NLA service to manual startup (network list service was already set to manual as well), and it stopped doing it. I enable it, and it starts hanging on message again. It also works fine in safe mode (both networking and without).
Any suggestions or ideas? Would leaving the NLA service to manual cause any major conflicts? Are there any timeout settings we could verify?

We have a network of aprox 500 computers, and since putting windows seven on the computers and laptops, they intermittantly hang for up to an hour just saying "please wait". This error was supposed to be resolved with SP1 but it doesnt work. It must be one of the services holding as once it has timed out, the login box pops up and all works fine

I am getting the following error from past 2 days :-It says "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1. insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose your language settings, and click "Next."
3. Click "Repair your Computer".
Status: 0xc0000225.
Since i dont have the recovery disc so i downloaded the one from torrent but of no use as it failed to read from the USB.

I installed Win 7 Ultimate onto my brothers Win 7 Home Edn laptop. I didn't realise at first and he has done quite a bit of work on it since the installation, on iTunes and the like. I only noticed the error when trying to activate windows and, of course, as the laptop is Home Edn, and I used an Ultimate disc it didn't take the key on the laptop. So I have now installed Home edition and have the Windows.old folder present. I basically need to put all the programs and file/folders etc into the new OS.

the stellar customer service at Dell I have had to recently reinstall windows 7. I was running windows 7 prior to this installation and therefore those files have been moved to windows old. How do I reinstall this file? I'm assuming the process is the same as for other versions but being as I'm not that technically savvy I don't know how to change the command scripts to suit my situation.

MS and their mail systems are giving me grief. I have a Vista 32 PC using "Windows Mail" and want to transfer email folders (lots) and messages to Windows 7 using Windows Live Mail 2011.Windows Mail was a replacement for Outlook express on Vista.Windows Live Mail 2011 is a replacement for Windows Mail on Windows 7.I tried a couple of things.
1) Basic Export and ImportI exported relavent files: Account info, Contacts and all the messages to a folder (in Windows Mail format) on old computer and used the old "Addias" transfer - copied folder to stick and RAN it over to the new computer.
- Imported (using the Windows Mail format) the Account info successfully,
- imported the Contact info successfully.
- Import Messages - appeared at first to be successful
Issue: Message folders appear to be renamed and some folder names have been truncated, not all folders appear to be there. (Looks like "long Name folders greater that 8 characters get truncated)
2) Tried the "Easy transfer mechanism (Vista and Win7 transfer utility) - but couldn't get the new computer to see the Vista even though I could see them on the network. I thought that this would transfer the folder names correctly.I'm about to try a time consuming effort of coping folder by folder (export/Import)What I am more concerned about is that the individaul messages may have the same issue Ie not all coming accross and subject names being lost. Looking for alternative or third party transfer solutions?

I just bought myself some new parts for a new computer I built. After buying the parts and assembling it I tried to install windows 7, keeping in mind that this computer has no previous os installed in it, completely blank. I somehow managed to get to safe mode and install till the part where it says expanding windows files completing that step fully and rebooting to continue the installation, I have no idea why but after when it restarts, it freezes at the "starting windows" screen with the four orb animation. It should just go to the next screen with the blue wallpaper asking me for the language I would like and what not. But it just gets stuck there and doesn't move on, I tried
rebooting
removing as much devices I had plugged into the motherboard
removing everything but the mouse and key board
removing the graphics card
removing one of the two sticks of ram
[code]...
I have tried everything I know of and I don't think I need to update my bios because no one else has encountered this problem. Swell I am not very good with computers I am very new to this so...I also heard about updating drivers , but don't u need to actually be able to login to your computer to download and install them? I can't even log in, I wait for the windows logo to pass but it never does please help Tom Hardware community.

I bought a new computer that came with a Win 7 HP license, however I already have a copy of Win 7 Ultimate on another smaller HDD that dual boots with XP.I have copied the Win 7 HP partition to the smaller HDD that has dual boot Win 7 Ultimate / XP using EASUS Partition Manager. Then I disk copied the smaller HDD to the new larger HDD thus wiping the original contents of the HDD.So far so good, the larger HDD now has C: Windows 7 Ultimate; D: XP Pro; E: Windows 7 HP. Of course the boot manager only has entries for the C: and D: partition.I think I can use bcdedit to add another entry but I am a little confused about how to do this, I've seen examples for Win 7 and XP or Vista but not for 2 copies of Win 7. Can anyone tell me what bcdedit commands I need to run? For instance I could run "bcdedit /create {} /d "Win 7 HP" but I don't know what to put inside of the {}, I think I need a new UUID but I don't know if I should be running "bcdedit /createstore" first or something else.

Yesterday i wanted to change my OS to windows 7 64bits (I had windows 7 32bits before and worked just fine). The installation goes well but when windows install tries to reboot to complete the installation it hangs on "windows start" and reboot again and again. I tried several solutions such as
- Install using a different cd (3 different cds and same problem)
- Install from USB flash (not even working)
- Fix boot system (from command prompt using windows repair cd)
- Re-install windows 32 bits (same problem)
- boot in Safe mode (same problem it reboots again and again)
- Windows system repair (from cd)
PS:I have a Dell inspiron M 560 (Core 2 Quad, 4Go in RAM).
