Hi everyone. I installed Windows 8 today. I did partition the disk like in a guide, however, I missed where to install...I downloaded a Windows 7 iso image today and burned it to a disk, will I be able to install Windows 7 again from a disc? I still have Windows.old folder in my C drive, is there any way to dual boot Win8 and Windows 7?

I have on my desktop a dual boot Vista64 and Vista32.
BCD is via Vistabootpro.
I would like to overwrite the Vista32 install with Windows7.
Anything I should be aware of?
I hestitate for example to set the Bios to boot from DVD while installing Windows 7 or will the Windows 7 install when rebooting during installation automatically default to the Vista32 partition?
dual booting windows 7 home premium x64 with linux fedora 14 on dual independantly dedicated drives. i am a college student with moderate computer (windows) knowledge but am doing software development and would like to play around with some linux for a class. i have no prior experience with linux and have minimal knowledge of operation. i am currently running windows 7 and would like to keep it as my primary os. i do not wish to share media files across drives or os's, windows does that just fine as is and i dont want to get into a third drive. my current drive is a 1tb wd black caviar hdd. it is also currently 2/3rds full and the desktop is about 6 months old so i would rather not partition the drive for a dual boot. i would think that there are some other advantages for the os's operating independantly off their own drives other than if one hdd dies i should still have the other with its os still ok. i have read some topics about RAID configs with dual boot setups with dual drives like this but am not very familiar with RAID. is there a RAID config that would be beneficial in this situation? i currently do not have a RAID card. my tower internals are not very accessible and i dont like the idea of disconnecting drives depending on which os i want to operate.

I want to install w7 64 bit as a dual boot, but only have 1 physical drive. i cannot remove my current installation as it is pre-build from work, but can partition the drive etc. However on trying to install w7 64 bit I get a message saying cannot install windows 7 on efi drive with mbr, not gpt. Can I do what I want without screwing up my xp installation?

Not just boot, the power button had no response. 3 months later, i finally find a cheap motherboard for it, and swap it out.In that 3 months, i had taken the hard drive out, and had used it as a slave drive in my family's desktop. I'd occasionally boot directly to the drive itself, and after the first boot, it automatically obtained all the drivers for the desktop. All was well.
Well, about a week before my motherboard arrived, Windows 7 freaked and reset the permissions for every one of the 401,541 files on the partition during a scheduled chkdsk (replacing invalid security ID with default security ID). Now, it'll boot, but after the "Windows Loading" animation, it'll give me a black screen and a cursor. Nothing more. no key combinations (so no replacing sethc.exe with cmd.exe), no nothing. I can move the cursor, and turn the computer off.
I want to update windows 7 using windows 7 dvd offline (no internet on this pc) in order to fix corrupted windows 7 file problem (tried sfc scannow without success)

I could run Bootrec /fixmbr or diskpart or attrib to rebuild my mbr table through DOS command window using my windows 7 recovery CD. The problem I cannot access drive C: where my windows 7 are. I get the error message: Cannot open volume for direct access or system cannot find the drive path or specified. I still can access all my windows folders and files through home folder in Ubuntu. I don't want to reformat and reinstall windows. Is there is a way to run the DOS commands within Ubuntu
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed opensuse 12.1 on dual boot along with my other windows 7 installation. Installation of opensuse is successful and i can use it. But when I tried to use windows 7 on grub, it says bootmgr is missing. I've already encountered this problem a long time ago so i tried to use bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /rebuildbcd and bootrec /fixboot in the recovery console in the windows 7 DVD. Rebuildbcd and fixboot did not work and it said something like it cannot find my windows installation. I also tried bootrec /scanos, it returned a windows installation on D:\Windows but my windows is in drive C. I think this has something to do with me messing up the active partition in disk management a month ago but i already fixed it by setting the active partition to the system reserved partition. Only fixmbr is successful, but now i can't boot on any OS because it says: Missing operating system.I also tried bcdboot C:\Windows but it failed with a message that goes like: Failure when attempting to copy boot information..
View 2 Replies View RelatedI can't get Win 7 to boot after setting up dual boot (Ubuntu 10.10) on my GF's laptop. I'll describe the problem and everything that has been tried so far. REALLY hoping somebody has an idea, I'm getting desperate.I installed Ubuntu last night via the Live CD. Used the Live version to install alongside Windows and partition the drive, install Grub, etc. At reboot, after POST it would just go to a black screen with a flashing cursor. I could only run off the live CD. A forum member determined the Grub was trying to load from the wrong partition. We changed that and voila! Grub now loads properly. I can boot into Ubunto via Grub with zero problems. HOWEVER: when I try to boot into Win 7 from Grub, it just locks at the same flashing cursor of death screen. The 7 partition is till intact, I can see and access all the files on the 7 partition from within Ubuntu, however 7 will not boot. I have tried downloading and burning the Win 7 repair disk and doing all of the following,Running the automatic Start Up Repair - several times. All it does is remove Grub, but booting still goes to the flashing cursor and I have to reinstall Grub again to be able to do anything after POST.I have used the command prompt to run "bootsect /nt60 SYS /mbr". Has the same effect as above.I have used all the bootsec.exe /fixmbr, /fixboot, and /rebuildBCD commands. Again, all have the same effect and I have to reinstall Grub to get anywhere.I don't have an installation disk to try and just do a repair install because Asus apparently doesn't feel that I would need one of these. All I have is the recovery disks from the Asus AIRecovery application that want to just re-format the entire drive and start over. This isn't an option. It's my GF's laptop (mine gave up the ghost last week) and we both have WAY too much highly important data on here. Not to mention she would castrate me . Now from all my research the only other thing I've come across that sounds possible is that the boot flag needs to be set to a different partition. Somebody had a somewhat similar problem and it turned out the way Dell set up the system the boot flag had to be moved to a recovery partition and it worked fine. I'm wondering if Asus has something similar going on, but I can't figure out how to move the boot flag. I'm going on 12 straight hours of working on this now

The Windows 7 works well and I get options to log into either Windows at startup. But I curiously observe that I cannot VPN to my employer from that Windows 7 installation.Also, I installed LogMein and that too is blocked. I have installed VMWare on the Windows 7 and I could perfectly run VPN and LogMein from that VMWare installation. I have tried hundreds of advises and settings in the Services section to no avail. I even cleaned the Windows 7 install and started afresh; still cannot log to VPN

I would like to try out the Windows 8 developer trials, it seems logical given my situation to dual boot, allowing me to keep my current install and test Windows 8 simultaneously. I have a spare 80gb hard drive I could use, or I could create a partition on one of my existing hard drives, but a partition is much less ideal. I have tried dual booting linux on the hard drive before, but the linux drive over rode my dual boot set up (I obviously did something wrong), and I could only boot to linux.
How can I safely dual boot Windows 8 on this hard drive (or a partition if necessary), while keeping my Windows 7 install and data in-tact? Just to let you know I have over a TB of data spread over 2 drives but only 2 TB of hard drive space, so I can't back up a lot of my data, just a heads up.
I've got Winxp media centre NTFS installed and I've used Casper [URL] to copy Windows 7 premium from another hard drive to the Winxp hard drive NTFS partition.Do I activate the Windows 7 on the Winxp hard drive ? Will it cause problems ? The hard drive Windows 7 is installed on is a used hard drive .I don't want to dual boot with 2 hard drives.I've also downloaded EasyBCD.

Will ditch XP when happy with getting programs installed in Win 7.I also have a new drive that I wish to do the install of Win 7.My plan is to hookup new drive, place Win 7 DVD in drive and run the install in Custom mode. This should install Win 7 on new drive and preserve Win XP on the old drive.To register Win 7, I have the serial info from the Win XP system and will insert when asked. I'm concerned about whether this method to register will work correctly as I was told that Win 7 must find a windows.old file on the installation drive. Will it work OK?
View 7 Replies View RelatedThe pc specs I have are: Amibios, Pentium dual-core,cpu E6600@3.06 GHz,CPU mem 2048mb (dual) speed 3.31GHz. I have no idea how to fix this. The pc crashed in WIN 7 after accepting updates and WIN XP crashed after upgrading to IE 9.This pc is set up to dual boot. However, when the pc tries to boot the screen is black with white text and it has these options: WIN 7/64 bit, WIN 7/32 bit and WIN XP earlier version.No matter which OS I choose, it just loops to windows start-up repair and the results are always windows cannot automatically repair this computer.Safe mode is not accessible and if it starts to load at all, these errors show-KDCOM.DLL corrupt and SPTD.SYS hit enter shows. I thought I had a bootable WIN XP disk, but it is not. Therefore,I cannot try to do repairs that a way.I never got the WIN 7/ 64 bit cd, yet it shows as drive "e". Weekly I check for updates on these utilities and then I run CCleaner, Winclean for the registry part and if necessary Road kill then Malwarebytes all in safe mode when it worked.
Here are a few other things I tried and got results from:
*Memory test= passed
*Safe Mode= never happens no matter what OS I choose
*Last known good config= never works
*loops in start-up repair cannot fix issues-no matter what OS choice is made from the black screen
*never tried to disable auto start-up from black screen because I did not understand this option well or even thought it would be a benefit. Any tips would be appreciated.
I was running a dual boot XP SP3/XP SP3 until I recently clean installed Windows 7 32bit on C: partition (while keeping the other XP install). I used a boot manager to "find" my XP install, and I now dual boot Windows 7/XP. Both OSes start and run like they are supposed to.My issue is with Windows 7 MyDocuments security. Quite by accident, I discovered that when running XP, I could access, rename, change, and delete files in my Windows 7 MyDocuments folder. I went to Windows 7/Windows/system32 to see if I could rename or delete system files (yes, I made a backup just in case) but was denied. I booted into Windows 7 and tried the same thing to XP, but got the familiar "permission denied" popup.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've had since cloning my drive.I was originally running Windows 7 Pro x64 and Win XP Pro x86 on a WD 150GB VelociRaptor, but cloned these partitions to a OCZ Vertex 4 128Gb SSD. Both OS are available at boot up and Win 7 runs fine. However, if I select Win XP it hangs at the welcome screen (blue screen with no login icons). I have tried safe mode, but get a similar blue screen with just 'welcome' on it. If I put the original drive back in, it works fine.I used Acronis True Home to clone the drives as I have used it on many occasions with no issues. But just in case this was the issue I tried EaseUS partition manager, but still have the same problem. I really want to avoid reinstalling XP as I have legacy programs that I no longer have the installation discs for.I had recently run Intel Rapid Storage Technology 10.8.0.1003, only because I wanted to ensure all drivers and systems were up to date prior to cloning. XP still worked fine on the HDD, but don't know whether this could be linked to the issue or not.
