Overwrite One Copy Of Windows 7 With Another?

Oct 22, 2010

My laptop decides to refuse to power on. Not just boot, the power button had no response. 3 months later, i finally find a cheap motherboard for it, and swap it out.In that 3 months, i had taken the hard drive out, and had used it as a slave drive in my family's desktop. I'd occasionally boot directly to the drive itself, and after the first boot, it automatically obtained all the drivers for the desktop. All was well.

Well, about a week before my motherboard arrived, Windows 7 freaked and reset the permissions for every one of the 401,541 files on the partition during a scheduled chkdsk (replacing invalid security ID with default security ID). Now, it'll boot, but after the "Windows Loading" animation, it'll give me a black screen and a cursor. Nothing more. no key combinations (so no replacing sethc.exe with cmd.exe), no nothing. I can move the cursor, and turn the computer off.

How Can I Overwrite Drive With Win 7 32 Bit To 64 Bit ?

Aug 4, 2009

I've got a single hard drive with WIN 7 32 bit RC operating OK.

I want to replace it with WIN 7 64 bit RC (not dual boot).

I inserted the 64 bit DVD WIN 7 install ISO disk in my DVD and either it will boot me into by 32 bit system or gives me options to repair it. But, no options to overwrite the current OS.

If I fully boot into the 32 bit edition and try to open setup.exe on the 64 bit DVD it sees a 32 bit system and will not open the 64 bit install program.

How can install the 64 bit OS over the current 64 bit OS?

Does 7 Upgrade Overwrite / Remove Vista ?

Oct 24, 2009

I just want to make sure that installing 7 as an upgrade 'over' Vista removes all of Vista's operating system, particularly the registry. Is this a correct assumption? I've got some registry entries for magicjack that I can't remove with Regedit due to permission problems and since my "7 upgrade" is due in a few days I don't want to mess with trying to remove them again.

Will A Vista Ultimate Disc Upgrade Overwrite The 7 RC

Aug 17, 2009

I ordered a Vista Ultimate Upgrade disc to get rid of the Windows 7 RC 32-bit. Since 7 is newer, they say it won't work, but I've heard from two sources that booting from BIOS would overwrite 7. Is this true? I don't care if it cleans my HD, I already backed up.

Jan 15, 2012

I have one internal drive with 1 TB. The data there is very important to me , so I bought External removable drive for backup. Now, I want to copy the data from one drive to the second drive but I have to be sure I have a perfect copy of the data. The data is mostly songs movies and documents. I'm using windows 7.

My question is this:

1.If I'll transfer the data through windows 7 by copy and paste, I could be sure i have a perfect copy? 2.There are tools for comparison Between the original data to the data that was copied?

Now when I make any changes I am asked to save a copy of the file & to save it elsewhere on my computer & cannot save it directly over the original emailed spreadsheet. how to get this old feature back? I'm sure it's just a matter of ticking some option off.

Have Copied Files Named 'Copy Of' Instead Of '- Copy'

Mar 17, 2012

How can I get Windows 7 to name copied files using the scheme "Copy of" (used in Windows XP and earlier) instead of the default scheme "- Copy", whenever a file is copied to the same directory as the original file?In other words, if you copy a file named "Foo.txt" in a directory to the same directory, Windows XP would have named that file "Copy of Foo.txt", but Windows 7 names the file "Foo - Copy.txt". I want the copy to be named "Copy of Foo.txt".There are several reasons why I prefer the XP style file name:

1. It is familiar :-)

2. I have existing files that use the XP style file names, and I want all my file copies to use the same naming scheme. I guess I can do a massive file rename across all my backups, but that would solve only one of my problems.

3. Most of my folders are sorted by name, and using XP style would sort all copies together. On other forums it has been suggested that one can simply sort by date (to get the copies sorted together), but that advice assumes that all copies are created after all other files are created, which is actually not often the case.

4. I often work with long file names, which means that the end of the file name is often obscured, unless I have wide windows (not always possible) and use lots of horizontal scrolling every time I want to select a file. Hovering over a file to get its full name is a cumbersome solution.

5. On other forums some have given the advice to always make copies in subfolders, but I often make copies or copies of copies while I work (it allows me to roll back or to check earlier versions of a file quickly, during my work), and using subfolders would slow me down tremendously (not to mention confuse me).

I know that when TeraCopy is made the copy handler, it renames files in a different way than Windows 7 does, though unfortunately not the way Windows XP did it. Also, if one installs a third-party directory program such as Opus, it asks for a file name every time a copy is made, but I need something that simply names the file correctly immediately.

Need To Make Copy Of OS Windows 7

Aug 21, 2011

Just bought this net-book that came with Win 7 Premium. The first thing they recommend is to make a copy of their OS. Now this netbook did not come back with a burner, which i was aware of anyway. They do recommend a usb flash drive with the capacity of 12 gb's. I do not want to have to spend more money on another gadget just to make a copy of it. I do have a burner in my desktop which i have networked to the net-book, and am trying to see if i could at least copy or share it to my desktop and make copies there...but having a heck of a time so far.

Unauthenticated Copy Of Windows 7

Jan 27, 2011

I purchased a used HP Netbook 110 with Win7 on it, and the first time we turned it on it updated Win7 with the result that we now have an unauthenticated copy. The box the unit came in said it was sold with XP SP3, so I'm guessing the prevoius owner loaded an unauthenticated copy of Win7 on. There is a product code sticker on the bottom of the netbook but no product is actually specified -- I'm guessing it's XP. As the netbook did not come with any CDs (no drives to use them in) would a computer shop restore to XP without me having to purchase the OS? It seems I am "entitled" to one, but don't have the means to load it onto the machine. Or should I get a copy of Win7?

My machines are running XP but they are Dell desktops and I don't know if that would work -- most probably not. Any ideas anyone? This is my first experience with Win7, so I'm not sure if purchasing a copy is a good idea. I've stayed away from it until now -- I actually purchase a computer the week Win7 was released and fought with Dell to get it delivered with XP.

Can't Copy Certain Files To Windows 7

Feb 7, 2010

I'm trying to copy a series of files from my old XP machine to the new Win 7 machine. I've turned off User access control, I made myself the owner of the machine, etc., the files on the old machine have no permissions preventing the copying. I am the owner of both machines and there is no firewall blocking the files. About every third or fourth file says I need admin permission to copy it. But I can't figure out how to give myself this permission. Out of 400 in the folder, 296 copied over, the remainer did not. These are not executables, they are machine embroidery files with the file extension ".pes". This is just the first folder I need to copy. I have almost 100,000 of these files that have to be copied and can't afford to lose any.

I can't find anything online that relates to this kind of issue. How do I clear this out so I can get these files copied to the new machine? what criteria Win 7 uses to determine which files it will copy and which require admin permission. Is it the length of the file name? Characters in the filename? The name of the folder they are going into? I would sure hate to have to rename 100,000 files.
