View 3 RepliesI have a sony vaio which originally came with windows vista but my recovery disk is buggered! I installed windows 7 when I was sent a link from MS and I have been told about an offer to upgrade as I'm a student so I can get it pretty cheap.
Can I upgrade from my current windows 7 (evaluation) to Windows 7 premium or do I need to have vista or XP installed before I can do so.
I would like to do a clean install I want to start out fresh.
When WIndows Vista crashed and burned, ruining my hard drive I decided to install the evaluation copy of Windows 7. Once the version was officially released, I purchased an Update copy and entered the Product Key into Windows Activation. The key was accepted, and everything was cool for the past year. Since then I have installed dozens of applications and also use this system to support my web design clients. Now, suddenly I am being told that the evaluation copy has expired, and get blue screen crashes based on that. I can't "upgrade" since the installed version has had all the Microsoft updates and is consequently more recent than the purchased dvd. Is there any way I can avoid a clean install?

I just seen a message popping up stating that Evaluation copy build 7601 will expire in 14 days. Some time ago I had a hdd crash and had to install new hdd. Original Windows 7 could not be installed due to hardware change and I contacted Microsoft Thailand on June 7 whom connected me toSingapore/HongKong?The helpdesk had me check product key with slui.exe 4 and I had to give all numbers. She than gave me new numbers to put in A to G boxes and Windows 7 could be installed and is working fine since.

Now, I want to copy the data from one drive to the second drive but I have to be sure I have a perfect copy of the data. The data is mostly songs movies and documents. I'm using windows 7.
My question is this:
1.If I'll transfer the data through windows 7 by copy and paste, I could be sure i have a perfect copy? 2.There are tools for comparison Between the original data to the data that was copied?

View 4 Replies View RelatedHow can I get Windows 7 to name copied files using the scheme "Copy of" (used in Windows XP and earlier) instead of the default scheme "- Copy", whenever a file is copied to the same directory as the original file?In other words, if you copy a file named "Foo.txt" in a directory to the same directory, Windows XP would have named that file "Copy of Foo.txt", but Windows 7 names the file "Foo - Copy.txt". I want the copy to be named "Copy of Foo.txt".There are several reasons why I prefer the XP style file name:
1. It is familiar :-)
2. I have existing files that use the XP style file names, and I want all my file copies to use the same naming scheme. I guess I can do a massive file rename across all my backups, but that would solve only one of my problems.
3. Most of my folders are sorted by name, and using XP style would sort all copies together. On other forums it has been suggested that one can simply sort by date (to get the copies sorted together), but that advice assumes that all copies are created after all other files are created, which is actually not often the case.
4. I often work with long file names, which means that the end of the file name is often obscured, unless I have wide windows (not always possible) and use lots of horizontal scrolling every time I want to select a file. Hovering over a file to get its full name is a cumbersome solution.
5. On other forums some have given the advice to always make copies in subfolders, but I often make copies or copies of copies while I work (it allows me to roll back or to check earlier versions of a file quickly, during my work), and using subfolders would slow me down tremendously (not to mention confuse me).
I know that when TeraCopy is made the copy handler, it renames files in a different way than Windows 7 does, though unfortunately not the way Windows XP did it. Also, if one installs a third-party directory program such as Opus, it asks for a file name every time a copy is made, but I need something that simply names the file correctly immediately.
Have Windows 7 Home Premium x64 which came with my SONY laptop. I have a new full copy of Windows 7 Ultimate and want to upgrade. Any issue with installing over my current home Premium install or do I need to go with a clean one?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a HP Pavilion which I purchased from Best Buy with the Vista operating system installed. This was of course prior to Windows 7 being released. I ordered the free upgrade disc but postponed doing the upgrade until just last weekend. While I like Windows 7 or at least what I have seen of it so far, I have encountered several problems that I have been unable to resolve.
1. When trying to restart or shut down the computer, it will log me off but then hangs at the "Shutting Down" screen. I have to force the shutdown by holding the power button.
2. I cannot copy and paste or cut and paste anything. Even in Windows explorer when working with files, explorer stops responding and I have to go to the task manager to close the program. This happens whether I am trying to copy and paste one file or a batch of 400 articles. It also does not matter if I use the right click menu or keyboard Ctrl C /X/ V.
I have run all of the Windows updates and installed all but a few optional updates that seemed to be unrelated to any problems that I am encountering, or related to hardware that I do not have installed on my system. I can copy and paste in my email program, Thunderbird, but the copy/cut/paste problem seems to be limited to Windows Explorer.
can i use a Windows Anytime Upgrade: Windows 7 Starter to Home Premium if i am currently running a windows 7 evaluation build copy 7260? also, is it possible to delete this eval version and return to the previous operating system (vista) if i no longer have the original operating system disks?

I have a Windows 7 pc with an external 500Mb usb hard drive. As it is getting full I've added a 2Tb usb drive. I tried using FBackup and had the same problem. Also, I cannot transfer files across the wireless network from an XP laptop, although that used to work.

I was looking at the Dell Inspiron Zino HD to replace the full tower PC in my living room that has lower specs. Right now my living room PC is running Ubuntu 9.04 with Boxee so if I did order the Zino HD I would install Ubuntu on it and not need Windows.
My question is can I take the copy of windows that comes with the Zino HD and give it to my sister to put on her PC? Right now she has XP(was running Vista but she downgraded). Also, her computer is not a Dell, if that matters. It does have a 64 bit Intel chip though, so would I need to order a 64 bit version of Windows 7 with my Zino HD?
I haven't called Dell to see if I can get a Zino HD OSless but that is always a hassle and my sister could use a copy of Windows 7.
If it is possible do I call Microsoft right away to deactivate it or can I just give her the CDs to my sister and install and activate on her computer? Also, do I need to get Ultimate with my Zino HD to have it work or can I do it with the cheapest version that has 64 bit?

One of our employees is unable to copy/paste from our terminal server in Europe to her local machine anymore, and I'm trying to figure out the problem. I've already made sure that the Clipboard is checked in the RDP connection properties. I tried connecting as her on my machine, and the same thing happens. If I log out and then reconnect as me, copy/paste works. Should I have the remote admin take a look at his policy?
