Migrate Windows.old After Changing From Windows 7 Ultimate To Windows 7 Home?
Jan 25, 2012
I installed Win 7 Ultimate onto my brothers Win 7 Home Edn laptop. I didn't realise at first and he has done quite a bit of work on it since the installation, on iTunes and the like. I only noticed the error when trying to activate windows and, of course, as the laptop is Home Edn, and I used an Ultimate disc it didn't take the key on the laptop. So I have now installed Home edition and have the Windows.old folder present. I basically need to put all the programs and file/folders etc into the new OS.

I have a Win 7 Home Premium box along with 4 WinXP boxes in a simple network. My Win 7 box can Remote Desktop to any of the WinXP boxes, and be used to "drive" them, no problem.I added a new machine yesterday that came with Win 7 Home PremiumAfter searching through other threads, I found it was stated that if I upgrade the new box to Win 7 Pro or Ultimate, I can then use my original Win 7 Home Prm to connect to, and "drive" the new Win 7 Ult. box.I successfully upgraded the new box, it's now confirmed to be running Win 7 Ultimate. I have also disabled the firewall, and checked the Remote Box Settings:Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (less secure). However, the Home box cannot connect to the Ultimate box. It times out with the following error:Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:1) Remote access to the server is not enabled2) The remote computer is turned off3) The remote computer is not available on the network.

In case anyone is running into issues trying to upgrade Windows 7 Home Premium to Ultimate, I did the following things and got it to work. I ran into the "Can't upgrade. Need clean install" issue, and the "you have a later version" issue.
1. Changed the two registry keys in Hkey Local MachineSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsNTCurrentVersion Changed Edition ID to "Enterprise".Product Name to "Windows 7 Enterprise"
2. Browsed the Windows 7 Ultimate CD directory, found the Setup.exe file, right mouse clicked it, selected "properties", and told 7 that I wanted to run this file in Vista Version 2.
Then ran setup from Windows 7 Home Premium. You obviously need an upgrade license for this to work, but I had just purchased one.

I just purchased a PC with Win 7 Home Premium pre-installed. In the meantime, I was able to purchase a copy of Win 7 Ultimate through my campus bookstore for a good price! How do I go about upgrading from Home Premium to Ultimate? Both versions are 64-bit.I do have a physical disk with Win 7 Ultimate. So, please do not direct me to Microsoft's Universal Upgrade Program for Win 7.

I am doing it because my brother had his computer worked on by our Nephew, and he went from XP to 7 ultimate with a hacked copy of 7 ultimate. I have done a fresh install, but it keeps starting and reverting back to Ultimate, The kicker os that I can go to KEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersion and see windows 7 home premium as the operating system with no CD product ID. I'll add the product key, and go to regiser it but it won't let me activate it. The thing I have an issue with is that even after a fresh install, it starts up and says windows 7 ultimate.

i have just upgraded my motherboard, and intend to use the oem licence with that on another build, as per licencehowever, i have a perfectly good install on my ssd of win 7 hp, and as the new motherboard is almost identical (both gigabyte 775 with p35 chipset) and seems happy with the drivers, i was looking forward to avoiding a fresh install,is it possible to "activate" win 7 ultimate (64 bit) and upgrade in place?and will doing so compromise my prior licence (which was a legit upgrade from vista, the vista disks of which have vanished into the depths of time) ?i have successfully done clean installs from the upgrade disk of hp that have been blessed by windows recognising the legitimacy of the oem linked motherboard

I want to remove win 7 Ultimate. Never mind why. I need to know what files I can remove to allow me to install win 7 Home Prem. Never mind why.[/b]Does anyone know what windows files I must remove to allow me to install WIn7 home Prem without getting the message that the installed OS is better, newer, etc. I can't format partition because I have tons of gigs of data that I don't want to lose. Also, if I go into command prompt, how do I get attrib to set -h -s -r without getting an, "access denied" message.ALL I want to do is install Win7 Home over Win7 Ultimate. It would take too long to explain why.

im not the best when it comes to knowledge of computers and what not but i'm completely stumped and so is everyone else on the web, it seems. cant find a solution to this for nothing. i also did a search here on screen brightness problems and didnt find anything specific to my problem..basically i just installed windows home 7 ultimate on my hp dv5t after previously having vista on it and i cant find how to adjust the screen brightness.i've googled it and others have had the same problems but i cant find how to fix it. my fn shortcut doesnt work, and when i go to power options and all that, theres no slider or even option to adjust brightness. ive seen where it's supposed to be on windows 7 via Internet videos but it's not there. anyone know what to do, or has anyone heard of this??

I purchased a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate at an auction. I subsequently installed it on one of my computers and everything went well. Not knowing that I could only install it on one computer I then installed it on my other computer. Everything was running well for a few days and now I keep getting a message that Windows 7 cannot activate. I don't want to purchase another copy of Ultimate and want to return to the original OS - Windows 7 Home that was preloaded on my Dell computer when I bought it.
I tried to do a system restore to the date that I installed the Ultimate but it didn't work. Ultimate is still running. Do I have to do a complete reinstall from my backup recovery disks and return to square one from when my computer was new or is there something I can do to stop getting the activation error code.
If I have to return to square one and reload from my recovery disks, I will, but I am trying to get around having to go through all that work, as well as the many, many, updates I will have to wait through. I am also worried about having to reinstall all of my software, addresses, etc.
