View 2 Replies View RelatedI am slowly transferring from XP on an old PC to Windows 7 Pro. on a new one. The new one has a small solid state drive (SSD) for OS and programs and a large disk for data. Today I ran a Win 7 system restore to get back to a clean situation and found that the desktop had been re-set to default values. Several icons have gone, the mouse is double click instead of single, and so on. An icon-restore program has gone (but is still in the Download folder). And now, every time I re-boot I get a message that a temporary profile has been loaded - and to get back to 'my' desktop I must log off and re-boot. Which does nothing, apart from removing the gadgets and resetting everything to default again.Yes, I know I shouldn't be using System Restore with an SSD, but that is not because of any software restriction it is to stop the SSD wearing out. and is only a temporary measure whilst I load software.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have installed Windows 7 RC1 Build 7100 x64. Default system display language is english (EN). I have since installed Norwegian. Norwegian Dvorak and programmer Dvorak, all well so far, but no matter what i do it always defaults back to EN on "new windows" opened.
I have even removed EN from the list of installed services (See attachment picture if it made it in here). The short cut keys work fine for switching between the languages. I run windows update regularily and have restarted the pc several times.
When I invoke the "New E-mail" function in Outlook 2010 (or "Reply") I find myself composing in 11-pt. Calibri with a font color of light blue. How do I change this? Wading through the maze of menus avails me nothing.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just bought an HP Mini (200-4218tu) last Sunday. Now, when I tried to partition C, it was cut in half. However when I tried to format the unallocated space, it won't allow me. It said it doesn't support what I did. This case, the partition for HP RECOVERY and HP TOOLS were still intact. On boot-up, I can still press F11 for the HP recovery. Now, relying on the partition recovery, I decided to wipe C and install a trial Windows 7 ultimate just to be able to partition the drive. Success! I was able to create a partition but the HP TOOLS got wiped out too. I did a research that the HDD supports only 4 partitions. And the drivers downloadable via HP site were not useful at all to be able to override the OS installation. Thus far, when I tried to press F11 for the recovery, it prompted an error that the "BOOT" thing was not found and I need the recovery disk. Even upon OS set-up, I can no longer delete C. And bring it back to its 400Gb clean space.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI restored my friend's HP Vista desktop to factory defaults. When I attempted the first round of 91 Windows Updates, 50 of them came back as Failed to Install. I thought maybe the Recovery went bad, so I re-did the recovery to factory defaults. I was able to install half of the updates, (I decided to do half at a time), but now it is locking up at random times. I ran the Windows Memory Diagnostics, found no errors. I ran chkdsk /r from a command prompt, it found no errors. Any ideas where to look next? I'm thinking to open it up and look for swelled up capacitors
View 9 Replies View RelatedI remember a while back I got a BSOD, but I fixed it by reformatting my C drive, this didn't remove my OS or touch anything on my D drive however. I would now like to do the same, not because I have a problem but because my computer is becoming sluggish and I haven't reformatted for a long time. However, searching up how to reformat the C drive, without removing this OS seems literally impossible, every post I see just says the following: get your OS disk. Despite this, I managed to get the C drive back to factory defaults while keeping the OS, all my drivers for my hardware (graphics card, sound card etc.) intact. I would like to do the same again, if it is actually possible. This was originally a box PC so I don't have any CDs except for the one for my new graphics card which I replaced a faulty one with.

View 2 Replies View RelatedOK I'm not sure what happened but I'll try and explain. So last night I shut down my computer like normal and this morning I started up the computer like normal and it looked like everything was fine. The swirling windows logo showed up like it should but right after that it said windows is preparing to start a new session or something along those linesAfter logging in it seemed everything was set to default, all my programs and files were there but everything was reset. When I clicked on the start button you usually get a list of recently used programs above the list all programs button but there was nothing there. Also the task bar was empty as well. I did a restore and it seemed to fix the problem but I'm just wondering why it would do that just right out of the blue.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an Inspiron N4010, and one night, it worked perfectly, and the next morning it wouldn't start. So I had to restore my PC to the factory image. Now, many programs on my computer crash only minutes, or even seconds, after executing them. I do not understand why. I have not deleted any files, I have not messed with anything, and I have kept my PC up to date, as well as protected. There is no reason for why my computer runs the way it does.
View 1 Replies View RelatedEDIT: This is added by moderator. The problem system has been "restored" to factory defaults, so you can skip to post # 11 and be missing only some history. I have also at this time moved the thread from Networking to Windows 7.Okay, this is my boyfriend's laptop. He's left it with me to see if I can fix it. I'm at work right now, and it is at home, so I can't try anything until I get home tonight. Here'e the situation, as best I can tell:He has 2 laptops...one is old, and connects fine, the other is probably 6 months old - a Dell - Windows 7, and this is the one that is having problems. The other laptop has no problem with its connection - it is just the Dell laptop. He brought it over to my house last night, and it is doing the same thing. It finds and connects to my network, but it states that it is a "limited access" connection, which essentially means you have no internet connection (apparently).
So here is what I have found out. For one, his laptop came with few months subscription to McAfee...and apparently that is now expired. He's never renewed it. I did put MalwareBytes on there for him, when he got the thing, but I don't think he runs it unless he thinks there is a problem. I've told him to keep it updated, but I guess he thinks I can fix it if there is a problem. Again... (Once we get this fixed, he WILL keep this stuff current..darn it.) Anyway...he said he kept getting some popups - the ones that ask if you want to "allow a program to make a change to your computer"...and he always said no. I think he got several of those in one night. He ran the MalwareBytes, and it found and quarantined some malware (I don't know what sort of things - I was not there when he ran it) and then when he tried to access his network again, he got the "limited access" thing. So...something has happened, just on that laptop. I messed around with it a little last night, but I couldn't get anything working.
We have a family computer with three main accounts; admin, josh, becky. "josh" has been reset but the other two accounts; "admin" and "becky" are the same. I have never seen this happen and I have no idea how to recover the files on Josh's account. How can I recov the account before everything was deleted?

I have my "pictures" folder on a separate disk drive and have set Libraries to include it. However, I still have Microsoft's My Pictures folder and can't get rid of it. As a result, many applications get confused and save files to the wrong folder or I loose files myself. How can I modify the default Library to point ONLY to my chosen folder and not the defaults please? Or alternatively, get rid of the MS default library system completely as I HATE being forced to be organised like this by MS when no alternative is offered that works!

how to make W7 explorer display the file tree the same way that XP did? The W7 way is a total mishmash, IMHO. I can't understand the directory structure. The indentation on the display is very slight and hard to see so that it is very hard to tell where a subdirectory starts and ends. It takes a long time to fill in the file structure so that after several seconds, even minutes, the display is still jumping around. There are a lot of things that I like about W7 but this is NOT one of them. I use windows explorer a lot.

They are running Windows 7 Professional and will have mobile broadband connections. We'd like to have them setup essentially the same, with all the same settings and restrictions. What is the best and fastest way to do this? I've used the local group policy editor but haven't been able to figure out how to copy those settings from one computer to another. Each computer will have a standard user account. We'd like to prevent the installation of programs (except by admins) and changing of most settings. We're also going to attempt to restrict most internet access except for approved sites.

View 9 Replies View RelatedEvery time I create a new window, if I happen to already have a window from that same program open, I have to move it back up and left to set it in the top corner of the monitor.Windows off-sets new program interfaces down and to the right. And I move it back up and left.In todays world of multi-tabs and stacking task bars to group like programs, with selectable pop-up previews of programs from the task bar, why on earth do we still have to deal with the extremely irritating mode of "new windows must offset else the user will have no idea where his old window is" mentality.
