Restore System Settings And Previous Versions Of File Option Grayed Out
Nov 30, 2012
Restore system settings and previous versions of file is greyed out on my system, I may have disabled a required service for this. As I'm about to try the X-Fi MB2 mod again as the last time I tried it my system was messed up that it wont even recognize my actual X-Fi card properly. So I'm thinking a system restore can work with this experiment.

Trying to restore some folders to previous versions, but I get met only by the sight of this on all the folders:s you can see, there are previous versions, but I can not select one of them to restore with. I can go in and look in them but as I cannot restore with them, "Reset" button is not clickable.

System Restore will not create a restore point or restore to a previous date & time. The error message was: A restore point could not be created: An error was detected in the Volume Shadow Copy Server (VSS).The problem occurred while trying to contact VSS writers. Verify that the Event System Sevice and the VSS service are running & check for associated errors in the event logs (0x80042318).Volume Shadow Copy is started & running (done in system events).Event System Sevice and the VSS service are started and running. But no cigar, SR still broken.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A505 laptop. In my experience, Toshiba has one of the worst system recovery modules which takes ages to restore. To avoid this issue, I restored my machine to factory settings, deleted crapware, updated and backed up using the tool built into Windows 7.Now after a while, I successfully messed up the system that it takes 5 minutes to boot and is as slow as a turtle. I am considering system restore using the backup I made on external HDD.My question is, if I restore using this backup, - Will it delete ALL the data put on this machine AFTER the backup was made?- Will it completely restore SYSTEM to the backup settings? i.e. deleting the folders and registry entries added by the programs installed

I remember back when we were using XP, 2000, ME, 98 and even 95 versions of windows, we had the option to change the login screen so that you HAD to type in both username and password. I know public PC's are often setup this way too, but I can't figure out how to do this on my windows 7 PC, and would very much like to use this option.

For the third time in a week, Windows 7 has replaced some of my personal data files with earlier versions, without my consent, following a restart. I'm talking about my outlook Data file (outlook.pst), my Quicken data files and a few others. Files are located in different places, but mostly in my Documents folder.
There are no errors, no crashes and no warning whatsoever. I just restart the PC and suddenly my data files are overwritten with sometimes days old versions. The first time it happened I assumed that maybe I hadn't properly saved my document(s), but then I noticed it actually WAS replacing current files with earlier versions. I would enter a few days worth of transactions into Quicken, save and even backup the files, only to have it revert back to a file that was saved two days ago after restarting the PC, causing me to have to re-enter all those transactions. Same thing with Outlook - I could add/change/remove appointments in my calendar, only to discover that it went back to an earlier time after the next restart, all changes made would be lost. Just a simple reboot is all it takes - the last time I had to reboot to update a driver. This is completely unexpected & unacceptable behavior. What would cause Windows 7 to do this?

In hopes of solving some issues I was experiencing with IE-9, I upgraded to Pre-Release 10. Anyway, now that I'm on IE-10, I've noticed that some webpages I've written no longer appear the way I'd like them to. Specifically, this relates to tables; more specifically, to their borders. From what I can tell so far, this is due to the fact that IE-10 has deprecated the following HTML tag: bordercolor="value". I've considered the idea of reverting back to IE-9, but rejected that as a misguided attempt to hold onto the past: i.e., I think other browsers have already deprecated this tag; IE-9 being the last hold-out.
So onward we go. And from what I can gather, the way forward will involve some kind of CSS implementation, about which I know almost nothing; something I'm not bragging about, to be sure. I've begun to review some online documentation, specifically, HTML Dog. While this seems like a great resource, I'm having a hard time using it to quickly learn how to make the necessary changes to some production webpages so I can restore them to their previous appearance. Perhaps, I should mention that I really don't use any special webpage generation tools. I just write the straight HTML code using MS Wordpad. Also, my knowledge of HTML is both rudimentary and backlevel: what I've learned to do over the years is probably based on the HTML 3.0 standard.

I'm trying to partition my 500 GB hard drive into 3 drives total. Right now, there is only a C Drive, but I want to divide that.
When I go into the Windows 7 installation, this is what I see:
Extend and new are grayed out, and even in disk management, there is no unallocated space.
Can somebody please guide me into partitioning this hard drive. I've searched and the only answers I find are for dual boot setups. Partition Magic is not supported by Vista (.: 7 as well).

After doing a copy and paste, we have, on 3 occasions so far, found the copied data in an entirely different file. Twice data from a copy appeared in an excel spreadsheet and once a picture copied in facebook appeared in an email. The excel problem is very worrysome as it is our family budget. how this could happen? In the case of the excel events no paste operation was intentionally done.

It seems that the first Monday of the month, my system resets back to the date that MS pushed out IE9 to my PC and installed. This brings back the 'old' desktop and settings. Each time this happens, I have to reinstall my printer & set to default, reactivate various program icons, etc. This is becoming very tiresome as today was the 3rd time this happened.

A few months ago I went on a rampage (stupidly) trying to get rid of TuneUp Utilities. I'm not sure but I believe it was during some registry cleaning-up that I must have screwed something up.Ever since my System Restore hasn't worked right, I've not bee able to have a successful system restore since.Wasn't an issue until now when I very much want to restore. (I uninstalled Steam and I'm hoping a restore will reverse that so I don't have to download my game library again.)I tried to restore to a point created yesterday and got teh same error I've been getting:Quote:"System Restore failed to extract the file(C:$Extend$RmMetadata$Txf) from the restore point. An unspecified error occurred during system restore.(0x80070005)" I've been trying to research the problem but have heard everything from "It's Norton!" (I do not run Norton nor have I ever) to "Unplug all your USB devices" to "Your accout doesn't have proper permissions."Does anyone know what this actually is and if it's fixable without formatting the system?

Upgraded from XP a week ago and now playing with 7 for the first time. I pulled the trigger completely so no going back. So far, I really like it, but need to get more comfortable with it.
Problem is my system restore points are ballooning and squeezing out old restore points. Example: I had roughly 10 points after manually creating each one when I was doing my initial software installs. A day later, I looked and they were all gone except for 1 point which had ballooned to fit my entire allocation (2 or 3%) at the time. So this 1 point killed all my previous 9 points. And I can't understand how this happened.
So I upped system restore to 7%/10GB to test what's going on, and now I'm consistently seeing 2GB sized restore points vs. a couple hundred megs which is what I expect.
The thing I can't abide is my restore points getting squeezed out for new ones. Maybe 1 or 2, but not all of them for a single massive one that's auto generated by the system.
EDIT: I've just confirmed that my system restore function is actually fluid...the restore points grow. I turned off restore, deleted all points, and rebooted. Then I manually created a single, new point as a baseline. It started out as 50 MB. And continues to grow, even as I check mail or open up my browser. Now that same single restore point is 94 MB.
So I can understand why I developed huge restore points, especially as I was playing around with 7, installing things, etc. The problem continues to be that a) the individual restore point files can grow to be huge (2+ GB), and b) the huge files push out old restore points.
I'm curious if this is by design or an actual flaw. I don't want my restore points to grow or be fluid. I want them to be a snapshot in time that I can revert back to in case I mess things up. Gold star to anyone that can turn the "fluidity" off.

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit (Ultimate). My build number 7600. I use the feature "Restore Previous Folder Windows at login". The window Explorer comes back up when I reboot. However, unlike WindowsXP, the window(s) come up at a different location and different size.
This is frustrating to me. I have a computer that I run lots of "test" software. I like to have 3-different Windows Explorer running at the same time. I have them at a specific size and location on my monitor for a reason. But like I explained earlier, at each boot up, everything is messed up.
